Heavy and persistent rain is expected to cause flooding in some parts of England and Wales. Amber warnings are in place for today and tonight. Gusty winds will be an extra hazard too before it turns colder for all parts during the weekend. The afternoon weather is presented by Alex Deakin.

00:00Hello, welcome to your afternoon weather update from the Met Office. Storm Claudia is here
00:05and providing some very heavy rain. We have Met Office warnings in place, amber warnings
00:10for parts of England and Wales. Here's the bigger picture. Most of the UK is smothered
00:15in cloud, but some Scotland just poking up there. Some fine weather to be had here. It's
00:20further south where Storm Claudia is really affecting. The storm itself, the low pressure
00:25system actually out to the southwest of the UK. Of course, this system was named by the
00:29Spanish Weather Service. We've seen bands of heavy rain moving in here and some more
00:33thunderstorms packing into Portugal and Spain during today. But that same weather system
00:38is now throwing up a lot of cloud. We've already seen quite a bit of rain through the morning
00:42and it's only going to get heavier, particularly in this corridor across South Wales through
00:46the Midlands towards East Anglia. Further pulses of heavy rain coming into southwest England
00:51too. Parts of the southeast may not see much rain at all. And as I mentioned at the start,
00:56parts of Scotland staying fine and sunny. Reasonably bright too across Northern Ireland
00:59and much of the far north of England also staying dry. But the cold air is in place here and that's
01:05what's driving this. The cold air pushing down, hitting the warmer air coming up from the south
01:10and generating this very active weather front and providing that corridor very heavy rain.
01:16And the strong winds also picking up later on today. There are a few showers coming into
01:21northern Scotland. They'll have a bit of snow mixed in over the hills. But let's focus in on this
01:25wet weather and the weather warnings we have in place. The Amber Warning has been extended this
01:30morning. We're concerned also now about the Peak District as well as further south through into
01:36the Midlands, parts of Cambridgeshire up into Lincolnshire. And this secondary or second Amber
01:43Warning also in place across southeastern parts of Wales. That's where there is perhaps the greatest risk
01:48of high impacts, significant disruption. But anywhere in these Amber Warning areas, there is the likelihood
01:54of flooding. In the broader Amber area, you could easily see 40 to 60 millimetres of rain, maybe 80
01:59millimetres of rain in some locations. And in this Amber Warning area across the south and the east
02:05of Wales, we could easily see 100 millimetres of rain, maybe more than that over some of the hills. So
02:12things like the Black Mountains, the Gwent Valley, seeing some of the worst of the rain here
02:17over the course of Friday. There is a broader yellow warning covering a good chunk of England
02:23and Wales for the rainfall. So we could see some problems here, certainly a lot of spray and surface
02:27water on the roads. And then we do have a couple of wind warnings because of that gusty nature of the
02:32easterly winds for parts of northwest England and north and west Wales. So that is also something to
02:38be aware of, particularly if you're heading out this evening on the roads. There'll be a lot of surface
02:42water and a lot of spray. The temperatures show that contrast and show why we're seeing
02:46the heavy rain with the warmer air pushing up from the south, the colder air digging in where
02:51they clash. The air rushes up and generates that zone of heavy rain. Feeling pretty grim
02:55under that central slice through Lincolnshire, Norfolk, the east and west Midlands and parts
03:01of south Wales where 9, 10 degrees, but feeling colder with the wind, especially on some of these
03:05North Sea coasts. Temperatures 8, 9 degrees in western Scotland. Probably not feeling too bad here with a bit
03:11of shelter, but cold enough, as I say, for these showers in northeastern Scotland to have a bit of snow
03:15mixed in very mild in the south. It brightens up 16 degrees. An awful lot going on with the weather at
03:21the moment. If anything, we're going to see a further pulse of heavy, showery rain coming up
03:25into these areas, of course, southwest England, south Wales, then into the Midlands during this
03:30evening, just exacerbating, increasing the rainfall today and potentially, therefore, exacerbating the
03:35flooding problems before it all does start to ease off a little bit overnight. Obviously, the rain will
03:41have to run down into the rivers, so the flooding that we see may well peak through the night and
03:47into Saturday, but the rain itself should at least start to ease in many areas overnight. It will push
03:52a little further north into parts of northern England, and we'll see some heavier rain developing
03:56perhaps over parts of the Pennines. Southern air is becoming drier. Cold enough for a touch of frost in
04:01parts of Scotland where we've got some clear skies, and after all, the moisture could turn quite foggy if
04:05we get some clearer skies across the southeast. Something to be aware of on Saturday morning.
04:10Temperature-wise, we're holding up in the south again in double figures, but it is going to turn
04:15colder everywhere. Now, Saturday, we've kind of got a three-way split. Much of the south dry. A chance of
04:22one or two showers in the southwest, but certainly a drier day for south Wales, southern parts of the
04:27Midlands. There will still be some rain from storm Claudia from this weather front draped across
04:34northeast England, especially pepped up by the Pennines, but nothing like as heavy as the rain
04:39that we're seeing over the next 12 hours or so. And again, much of Scotland, Northern Ireland staying
04:44dry with the Highlands having a cracking day with plenty of sunshine. That brisk easterly wind will
04:49again be noticeable on those North Sea coasts, feeling pretty chilly here, but again in the south,
04:53bit of brightness. 15, 16 degrees is still very mild. It's been a very mild start to November,
05:00but it's already turned colder further north and the colder air will win out as we head through
05:05Saturday night and into Sunday. That rain continuing to fizzle out and the rain band just as well as
05:10fizzling out starting to push a little further south. So there's Claudia getting closer to Spain and
05:16Portugal, but weakening through the weekend. And as it does so, it allows the northerly winds to win
05:22out pushing down the colder air, particularly as that weather front moves in later on through
05:27Sunday. So we start the weekend with the north-south split with the milder air in the south
05:32and in between that very active weather front. But the colder air will win as the northerly winds
05:37push the colder air right down across all parts of the country by the time we get to the end of
05:42Sunday, bringing a chillier feel as we go into next week. Cold enough, as I said, for the showers in
05:49northern Scotland over the hills to have a bit of snow mixed in. Sunday, still quite a grey day over
05:54parts of the Midlands, Wales, maybe southern England, a little bit of drizzle here and there,
05:57but many places dry. A band of rain with some hill snow maybe tracking across Scotland, but a much
06:03brighter day for the northeastern parts of England compared to Saturday. We should see some sunny spells
06:09here and for Northern Ireland. Temperatures similar across the north, so mostly single figures,
06:15but in the south, those temperatures will be just dropping down a little bit and that process will
06:19continue as we head into next week. As I said, lots going on. Please keep up to date with the
06:25weather warnings. You can check them for yourself on our free app and on our website to see if you're
06:30in the amber or yellow warning areas. And of course, with things turning colder next week, there'll be
06:35plenty to talk about with that as well. So do keep up to date. Best way to do that, of course, if you're
06:39watching on YouTube, just hit subscribe and then you'll never miss an update.
