Infinity Sports Network national radio host - Zach Gelb - discusses the fallout from the Dolphins moving on from General Manager Chris Grier.
Transcript
00:00Zach Gelb can be heard nationally afternoons on the Infinity Sports Network and he joins us from
00:07the WFAN studios in New York City and Gelby we had a bit of an underwhelming NFL trade deadline
00:16day for the Dolphins yesterday after they fired Chris Greer I was expecting a significant sell-off
00:24by 4 p.m. yesterday and the only player they ended up moving was Jalen Phillips a couple
00:29days earlier to Philly and I understand if there were no offers there's no offers but were you
00:35surprised that a team like the Dolphins who kind of I thought telegraphed hey we're going to make
00:41some changes we're going to get rid of the general manager and we need someone to be in charge of
00:45that are you surprised that they didn't have a big sell-off yesterday uh yes and no oh there's a lot
00:51of that go right there uh there we go we're good all righty uh yes and no uh I when they got rid of
00:56Chris Greer I said it's either well we all knew that it was time for him to go but in terms of
01:02why now it's either they didn't want him to make those decisions or he wasn't comfortable in getting
01:10rid of a lot of those guys and making those decisions to trade off the the assets without
01:15knowing what his job security was at um I did anticipate they would make more moves uh I thought
01:20for sure uh Chubb would be gone um Phillips obviously gets traded in terms of Waddle and
01:27Achan I didn't know what to expect because those guys are still good young players and unless if you
01:34would have got blown away with an offer which you weren't getting for Devon Achan just because of the
01:38the position it would be more for Waddle unless if you were getting a sauce Gardner type of offer
01:43which the Colts giving up two first round picks which was an overpay uh I did not anticipate that
01:48Waddle would end up getting dealt uh-oh Crowder you're muted Salon actually was saying that too
01:55where Waddle is a young good receiver like what what would a guy like that go for do you think
02:00because they're not getting a one for Waddle but would it be like a two like because they were saying
02:04one one one we need a one for Waddle and I think that was crazy the Dolphins to approach it that way
02:08I agree with the Dolphins if they weren't getting a one for Jalen Waddle then I wouldn't have traded him
02:13like you you're gonna have two on this roster next year two is gonna be the starting quarterback you
02:17would think next year bare minimum just because the way the contract is structured so what are we
02:22gonna do just throw two out there for the last year with nothing around him and then whenever the the
02:27next guy takes over they won't have a guy like Jalen Waddle I think Jalen Waddle is an asset I think he
02:33could be he has potential to be a number one wide receiver in this league that's what I was gonna ask
02:37you Gal but regarding Tua because we're all just kind of exploring how the Dolphins can get out of his
02:42contract and then there's this conversation about keeping Mike McDaniel what's the point right
02:47now when you're trying to lose games but clearly the Dolphins didn't sell off all their players
02:51they want to win if Tua what does he have to do to maybe garner some interest around the league
02:59to where they would trade for him obviously the Dolphins would have to cover most of his money next
03:04season but it would be a win-win I think if another team can get him at a discount and the
03:09Dolphins can get part of his contract off their books while looking ahead towards the future would
03:14there be any interest like what does he have to do I understand that people are desperate to get
03:19quarterbacks and there's a lot of dumb coordinators in this league that don't actually see what is
03:24happening in a situation they go I could fix that guy with how public and how nationally the injuries
03:31have played out with Tua I think it's going to be very tough even if he has a solid second half of the
03:38season which I don't anticipate I think it's going to be very tough because of how much money he's owed
03:43even if you do jump through some financial hula hoops and you kind of tie up the loose ends I still
03:49believe it's going to be virtually impossible to to trade to a tongue of I love is that the same
03:55thing we kind of had this yesterday when we found out Zion Williamson I'll get back to football but I
03:58was just thinking like Zion to me there's still so much potential there but he's out again with a
04:03hamstring injury would anybody take a flyer on Zion for any kind of price like or would it have to be
04:11bargain basement I I I guess he would be easier to trade than Tua um but that's the he's been less
04:20he's been less durable than Tua he's given you uh one full season or has he given you more than one
04:29I mean he wasn't the starter this year right and this year yeah yeah but but but back to what I was
04:34saying you also have to see who else is available like don't get me wrong Tua has been a better
04:39quarterback than Kyler Murray and both of those guys have contracts but if I am a general manager
04:48who do I think is easier to fix right now I think it's easier to fix Kyler Murray than Tua and Kyler
04:55Murray hasn't always been healthy but it's just where the injuries have occurred in the coverage of
04:59it I think is totally different so that's another thing working against the Dolphins is that Kyler
05:03is gonna who already got bench he is going to be available and I know he's hurt right now
05:08in the offseason and I think there's a team more likely to go trade uh like if you're the Raiders
05:14let's just say are you more likely to trade for Tua or Kyler Murray I think they'd be more likely to
05:18trade for Kyler wow I I think that would be a mistake but I I understand what you're saying that
05:24probably would be the prevailing notion well let's be real it's kind of like when you're a kid
05:28you know would you rather have the asparagus or the broccoli ma I want the effing donut shut up
05:33there's no there's no winners in that hypothetical what um what do you make unless if you said avocado
05:40toast if mom's an avocado toast even though I'm allergic to avocado I know hawk would be
05:44no one's allergic to avocado that's impossible nobody's what are you uh who's guacamole
05:50can't have guacamole because avocado you're allergic you swell up like my stomach gets very
05:58tight and uh how can I clean this up on the radio so it's either coming out one or two places that's
06:04what I'll say to you boys you don't have a tolerance no like I get sick that I get sick
06:11you can't say you're allergic no you can't say you're allergic to something if all it does is just
06:17give you the score right I don't think no no no that's how it happens like I I end up on the
06:22floor in like the fetal position in the feeble position I don't believe you I am it's it's what
06:28okay invite me over to your house make me mushrooms and an avocado and your beautiful fiance is gonna
06:34have to clean up along with you my throw up and my diarrhea it says it is possible to have an allergy
06:41to avocado avocado allergy is a rare but serious condition that can cause a variety of symptoms
06:49including oral reactions itching swelling burning in the mouth throat or tongue gastrointestinal
06:57reactions I'm not making this up vomiting diarrhea or abdominal pain and here's the thing I used to love
07:05when I was a kid like chips and guac I used to love like if my dad made cheesesteaks put mushrooms
07:11on the cheesesteaks and then for some reason when I was in high school those foods just didn't start
07:15to agree with me and my mom is the same way they don't agree with her either and my sister so I do
07:21think that it runs in the family tighten up gelb I mean it's enough you're you're and by the way if
07:26Len Weiner is listening right now uh my dear dear friend I I may need to get out of the city and
07:31you may need a job on 560 wqam 104 3fm I was gonna say you want to run out of the city want a job on
07:38the am I think you can have it I don't know if they're paying you want to be on the f what is
07:42that radio libre no it's still 560 you just uh it's kind of uh it's kind of just there although
07:49I saw someone at the gas station today recognized me and he's like I still listen on the am I said good
07:53for you oh so it's on both the air something about the crackle of the am I love that uh you're in
07:59New York what what did you make and what are New Yorkers making of what the Jets did yesterday they
08:04punted on everything kind of had the fire cell that I thought the Dolphins were gonna have
08:09I thought you were gonna talk about the election there for a second I was like all right I'm gonna
08:12just close out the chat real quickly um so I think everyone was shocked on Sauce Gardner
08:19people thought there was a good chance Quinton Williams was gonna get traded the fact that the Jets got
08:25two first round picks for Sauce who I've been saying this for a year and a half Sauce Gardner
08:30is a good player a fine player he is not this great player that you saw the first two seasons
08:36the last year and a half he has been vastly overrated like I remember in New York two years
08:40ago I said Pat Sertan is better than Sauce Gardner everyone looked at me and said I was crazy and now
08:44they look at me and they say that I was absolutely right um so the Jets getting two first round picks
08:50for Sauce is good for Quinton Williams they're totally in a rebuild he's a good player uh so
08:56they get a first and a second they now have five first round picks in the next two years so
09:01you could sit here and say okay the Jets which they've been rebuilding my entire life and like
09:05all right it's a good job by Darren Mouji because this team just absolutely stunk they they got something
09:11for their resources and now they could fully invest in a rebuild but ultimately they got a hit on
09:15four of these five first round picks and you I'll give you one mulligan but the one mulligan it can't
09:21be is on the quarterback and that's the interesting part to me if they take a quarterback this year
09:25it's either going to be Dante Moore Ty Simpson Fernando Mendoza none of those names we think are highly
09:33coveted names so do they take a quarterback this year or do they wait for next year but what did
09:37everyone tell us a year ago oh wait for that 2026 NFL draft class the quarterbacks are going to be
09:42unbelievable and right now they don't look like they're going to be unbelievable so it's a crap
09:46shoot in the quarterback drafting business but when Mouji makes the pick he has to get it right
09:52because if he doesn't then that will be the death of him in New York and they'll be on the other side
09:56of that trade though so like you said sauce Gardner I I still think he's a very extremely good corner
10:02hall of fame ability I'll put it that way he has all the tools in his toolbox and then Quentin Williams
10:08did the Cowboys or the Colts get better with their additions because you obviously trade
10:12thinking that you're right on the edge of something yeah so the Colts are in better position for this
10:17year and I look at that and I say okay that means they really believe in Daniel Jones as long as he
10:22doesn't get hurt that's why they give up the next year first round pick and Daniel Jones is going to be
10:26back the question is is he back on a franchise tag or is it one of those Baker Mayfield Sam Darnold
10:31three-year deals for a hundred million dollars I think Quentin Williams is the better of the two
10:36players between him and sauce Gardner in my opinion and if you're the Cowboys if you factor it in
10:42with the trade for Micah Parsons let me be clear I'd still rather have Micah than the players about
10:46to mention but now they have Kenny Clark they have Quentin Williams and then another first round pick
10:53that they that they got back from the Micah Parsons trade so if they hit on that first round pick
10:59and this is the thing for the Cowboys their offense is good enough I know it hasn't been great the last
11:03two weeks but that's you know regardless of what Draymond Green's about to say calling him a bum
11:07which I I don't get uh but Dak Prescott's a good quarterback CeeDee Lamb's a great wide receiver
11:11George Pickens he'll be back they'll find the way to get the deal done they have enough on offense
11:16now it's how do you make a garbage defense just be serviceable if the Cowboys in this offseason
11:22can get their defense to be serviceable then they can make the postseason next year so
11:27I still would have kept Micah Parsons but I think between the two I'd rather have Quentin over
11:32sauce but you're going to see more of the return on sauce in bigger levered spots because of the
11:36fact the Colts will be in the playoffs and the Cowboys won't be Gelby we're gonna be out of time
11:40here so I'm just gonna ask you for your prediction on Sunday because I'm fascinated by this Dolphins
11:44Bills game because the Dolphins they had one good game this season against Atlanta they had another win
11:51against the Jets but I don't understand how you can somehow muster up something against Buffalo when
11:59the GM's been fired I mean the the team the front office has said we're we've given up on the season
12:05everyone was for sale they got rid of Jalen Phillips they didn't sell off anyone else but everyone was
12:11for sale Mike McDaniel seems like dead man walking it's a disaster how can the Dolphins stick with
12:19Buffalo Dolphins are nine point home dogs on Sunday would you take that nine I would lay the
12:25nine with the Buffalo Bills because like what you said it was close the first time they already had
12:31the rah-rah effort up against the Buffalo Bills it seems like as long as the Bills have a pulse even
12:36if it isn't pretty they should be able to beat this team by 10 points and if there if it was McDaniel
12:43that got fired maybe there's an interim boost with Chris Greer the general manager being out I don't
12:48think there's an interim boost the only way that this game is close is if Josh Allen just becomes
12:54a turnover machine and that offensive line gets abused by the Dolphins but once again the Dolphins
13:01just traded Jalen Phillips so it's kind of tough for me to see this Dolphins defense really doing much
13:06damage up against the Buffalo Bills Zach Gelb from the WFAN studios in New York we will talk to you
13:13next Wednesday see you Gelby no heat nuggets talk come on Solana nine and a half point dogs
13:19tonight the heat they have a tough time in Denver I would have spent 30 minutes on the heat versus
13:23nuggets Gelb you know that play peppers play peppers probably not tonight probably I'm sending my
13:29resume to uh to Florida now you know I could be on the move all right len.weiner at odyssey.com
13:35all right see you Gelby later guys
