00:00Zach Gelb is on the Toyota of Hollywood Hotline.
00:03You can hear him nationally on the Infinity Sports Network.
00:06Comes to us Wednesdays from the WFAN studios in New York City.
00:12Before we talk football, I always remind you,
00:14get geared up with Canes or Dolphins merch this season at Caneswear in Davie
00:18or online at caneswear.com.
00:21Gelby, you're our national voice.
00:23You saw how the Dolphins started their season in Indy on Sunday.
00:27What's the national reaction?
00:31Get ready for the Hurricanes.
00:33Get ready for Florida State and get ready for USF.
00:35Your football season is over when it comes to the professional team.
00:39That coach, who is Napoleon Dynamite, he is a mess.
00:43He is a disaster.
00:45He couldn't operate.
00:47He couldn't find a way to lead a one-car funeral procession right now.
00:52He would get lost on that.
00:53He has no control of that locker room.
00:56Tyreek, I knew he was going to have a freak out on the sideline.
00:58I didn't think it was going to happen in week one.
01:01And two is healthy right now, and it still went that poorly.
01:04So that team's a disaster.
01:05Could they beat New England this weekend?
01:07Yes, absolutely.
01:09New England obviously is not the same old New England with Brady no longer there
01:12and Belichick no longer there, and they still struggle with the Dolphins.
01:16But that was a team.
01:17It's one thing to lose, and it's another thing to get embarrassed.
01:20I thought they were going to win the game, but if you told me they would lose the game by three,
01:25okay, not the end of the world.
01:27But the way that they made Daniel Jones look like he was Dan Marino, oh, my God.
01:32That was embarrassing, pathetic, putrid.
01:35I want to hear Hawk defend Mike McDaniel now.
01:39Not this week.
01:42Next Wednesday.
01:43You know what?
01:43Today's a great day.
01:44It's another day closer to Mike McDaniel getting fired.
01:46Hawk, I'm glad you said that.
01:49Is there ever a must-win week two?
01:53Because week three is prime time in Buffalo.
01:56That's not going to go the Dolphins way.
01:58We all know that.
01:59So if you don't beat the Pats this Sunday, you're starting 0-3.
02:03Is there a such thing as must-win on week two?
02:06Yeah.
02:06If they go 0-2 to start this season, you just pile and pile and pile on more,
02:12and then you actually start to feel bad leading into that Bills game.
02:15Because you know they're not beating the Bills.
02:17Unless if Josh Allen gets hurt, there's no shot that they are beating the Buffalo Bills.
02:22So you have to have this one.
02:25Hey, the inevitable thought is that Greer, McDaniel, like the Dolphins are going to clean house, Gelb.
02:32If this does spiral, if they can't beat New England and their own three,
02:36like what's your thought process on how to go about that as an owner?
02:40Or as the person calling the shots, do you kind of just let them ride it out this year?
02:44Because, hey, like this is their last year anyways?
02:47Or do you just start axing people in the middle of the season?
02:51Like what's your thought process on how that should play out?
02:54Yeah.
02:54I don't know if you get rid of people three weeks into a season.
02:57It's definitely possible.
02:59But I look around that bye week, right?
03:02Do you guys have bye week like week 11 or week 12?
03:05I don't know.
03:06We're looking down the road.
03:08You would think that they'd be able to find a way to tread some water.
03:11You know, even if they keep on going down and it's ugly and it looks like they're going to drown,
03:15you would think that they'd be able to tread some water at some point this season.
03:18Because this team does have some talent.
03:20It's not as if they don't have talent.
03:22But when the offensive line has been a major question mark the last few years,
03:26the defense just got snakebitten in the last two years with injuries.
03:30And they didn't really do enough to address the secondary.
03:33You know, Solana could be playing corner for them coming up in two weeks up against the Buffalo Bills.
03:37And, you know, you got guys that are really good skill position players.
03:42You know, when you can't block and when your quarterback is not a great quarterback
03:46and you can't cover anyone, things like this happen.
03:49And actually, I stole this question from Solana because I thought about it.
03:53He asked somebody yesterday, do you like the he called it the blame pie, right?
03:58Solana blame pie, like blaming Stephen Ross.
04:02And like, do you look at coach because the Jacksonville Jaguars haven't done anything,
04:05but people don't look at Shad Khan like he's a problem.
04:08But people are starting to question Stephen Ross with the Dolphins.
04:11Like, does the owner for him to not have that football man between him and the decision making?
04:17Do you blame him if they, since they've looked so bad?
04:21It is week one, since they've looked so bad.
04:23I blame the owner for one thing.
04:25And the one thing I blame him for, and I think this is inexcusable.
04:29Why does Chris Greer get the longest leash possible?
04:32Like, I make the joke.
04:33What pictures does Chris Greer have of Stephen Ross?
04:37What incriminating emails does Chris Greer have of Stephen Ross?
04:41Because it makes no damn sense why Chris Greer has been able to run this team for as long
04:45as he's been able to do with the lack of success that he's been able to have.
04:48Yeah, but that, to me, it's interesting because I think Chris Greer, we've picked it apart.
04:55He's made a lot of good decisions.
04:58Roster-wise, they're not horrible.
05:01You said it yourself.
05:02And so I wonder, are we doing, and people do it all the time, overreaction after one game.
05:07Are we taking one game?
05:11Admittedly, the worst game that I can recall Tua playing, the worst preparation I can recall of any Mike McDaniel-led team.
05:20Are we taking one game and putting too much weight on it, being that it was the first game of the season?
05:27No, it's because it's the way that Greer and McDaniel also conduct themselves.
05:31Like, Greer was basically laughing at the reporters a year ago about things that he didn't address.
05:36I think it was the line, right, where he goes, oh, you guys are more concerned about that than I am.
05:41And it ended up hurting that football team a year ago.
05:46And I don't know if I should be Mike McDaniel's PR person.
05:50And this is what I would tell him.
05:51Shut up.
05:53Like, you have the podium.
05:54We played an answer yesterday.
05:56I had my producer walk laps around the studio to see how many laps he could do until that guy stopped giving an answer.
06:03You do not need to sit there and give a two-and-a-half-minute answer and tell you that it can't get worse.
06:09Because here's the reality.
06:10It can get worse.
06:11You were playing the Colts.
06:13It's not as if you were playing this great team.
06:15What happens when you actually do play a great team?
06:19Have you seen something?
06:20Because, you know, Hawk, I think, is presenting a case of, hey, he's built a pretty good roster.
06:25You're just not seeing the results.
06:27But, Gelb, like, body of work, remove it, Chris Greer, remove the Dolphins is what the exercise I always do with these guys.
06:34Like, if I told you there was a general manager who's had two opportunities to hand-select his coach, went through a full rebuild, had a draft with three first-round selections,
06:45got the quarterback that he tanked to go after, and ultimately, in the second era with a different head coach, still hasn't been able to produce results.
06:54I think that's why week one against the Colts was as important as it was.
06:59Like, what should expectations be at this point?
07:03And we all set them at a playoff win, but I don't know anymore if that's even reasonable.
07:09If this team has a playoff win this year, I would be shocked.
07:14Like, I don't see how – I don't want to say I don't see how they don't make the playoffs, right?
07:19Teams have bad week ones, and they rebound, but there's just not enough depth on this team.
07:25Like, they have a Ferrari, right?
07:27And you see this Ferrari from four blocks away.
07:31You're like, oh, that's a nice car in the driveway, right?
07:33You got Tua.
07:34You got Jalen Waddle.
07:35You got Devon Achan.
07:36You got Tyreek Hill.
07:37And you get closer and closer to that Ferrari, and you go, oh, it's missing a front tire.
07:42The windshield has a crack in it.
07:44Oh, you turn on the car.
07:45The check engine light is on.
07:47The entirety of this roster has flaws.
07:49I always said it from the start.
07:51I thought they were trying to build the 49ers light.
07:54Like, that's what I always say.
07:55This is like the Walmart version of the 49ers.
07:59But for Greer to be there as long as he's been and not to have a playoff win,
08:04how does this guy still have a job?
08:06And, Gelby, the only team that scored less points than the Dolphins week one was your beloved Giants.
08:17I'm a Patriot fan.
08:20You don't buy that.
08:22Hey, bro, when is Jackson Dart going to start?
08:25Because that's going to be day balls out is that, okay, I'm throwing a young guy in.
08:29He's going to save me for a couple weeks.
08:31Soon.
08:32Because even after the game, he did that whole, oh, we'll see.
08:35And then, oh, we're going to play Russell Wilson.
08:38What they're doing right now, Joe Shane and Brian Dable, they know their jobs are on the hot seat.
08:43The owner, John Mare, prefers to bring him back next year.
08:46But if you unleash Jackson Dart right now and he doesn't play well,
08:50or it's the entirety of season, you don't walk away at the end of the season thinking he's the guy,
08:53then there may not be a justification for Dable and Shane to come back.
08:57So I think they're going to try, try to keep Jackson Dart wrapped up as long as possible.
09:04But if he's not starting by the end of the month or by early October, I'll be absolutely shocked.
09:09And I've been saying it from the start.
09:11Once I saw him in the preseason, Jackson Dart should be starting for this football team
09:15because Russell Wilson is washed and his career ended basically three years ago.
09:20As long as we're talking about the NFL in general,
09:23waiting about Caleb Williams, you still in on him, out on him?
09:27Um, I love Jaden Daniels going into the draft and I wanted my Patriots right towards the end
09:33of the season, get the number two overall pick so they could get Jaden Daniels.
09:36When I look at Caleb Williams, he has the talent.
09:40The leadership is an issue.
09:43The poise is an issue.
09:45And I put the other night more on Ben Johnson than Caleb Williams
09:48because Caleb Williams was supposed to get fixed by Ben Johnson.
09:52And they had that awesome start right out of the gate where they scored the touchdown.
09:56And then it went downhill all after that.
09:59And Kevin O'Connell coach circles around Ben Johnson,
10:02who I know he said, kick the ball out of bounds.
10:04You got to make sure the ball goes, goes out of bounds there.
10:07So he messed that up.
10:08He mismanaged his timeouts.
10:09And that guy, Ben Johnson, how arrogant that dude is all off season gets the job.
10:14Oh, I enjoy beating Matt LaFleur twice a year.
10:16Oh, I don't like the tush push because it's on explosive play.
10:19And then a reporter goes, well, you know, it leads the first down in touchdowns.
10:22You're the Bears.
10:23You never had a 4,000-yard passer.
10:25Who is your coach to determine, oh, if you want an explosive play or just a tush push,
10:29just get the ball in the freaking end zone.
10:31So to see him blow that game, I actually liked it because I don't know if it serves him humble pie,
10:37but in my mind, it serves some humble pie to Ben Johnson.
10:41Did Justin Herbert launch himself into the elite category of NFL quarterbacks?
10:46I feel like he was always kind of floating in the kind of like second to third tier,
10:51but that game against Mahomes to beat him again, prime time, second game of the season in Brazil.
10:59That was impressive, man.
11:01As much as I hate it as a Justin Herbert hater, that was impressive.
11:04Let's be real.
11:05Well, in terms of talent, he's a top 10 quarterback in this league.
11:08Like if we're drafting quarterbacks, he would be one of the first 10 quarterbacks that are taken.
11:14But what he did the other night was damn impressive, but it's only one game.
11:19Like that's a dude, you pay him that much money.
11:22You team him up with an elite coach in Jim Harbaugh.
11:25He bare minimum has to win one playoff game this year.
11:27So it's a good start, but that can't be the highlight of the season or else you go back
11:31into the same thing with Justin Herbert, where you know the talent's really good,
11:34but is it the same thing with Phillip Rivers, where, you know, when push comes to shove,
11:38you don't actually win anything with him.
11:41Who would you rather have Herbert and Harbaugh or Tua and McDaniel?
11:47I was wondering how you're going to troll me here.
11:49You can hear him on the infinity sports network nationally.
11:54You know what?
11:54I'd actually rather have McDaniel and Zach Wilson.
11:57McDaniel and Zach Wilson.
11:58How about that?
11:59Jackson Dart and Brian Dayball was always going to be his answer.
12:02Occasionally, Channing Crowder will be on Zach Gelb's show.
12:06How was he received this week?
12:07We know Crowder was a guest of yours this week.
12:10How was he received nationally?
12:11Good, but he was talking about how embarrassed he was to see his Florida Gators lose to USF.
12:18And then after the interview, I see some video circulating on Twitter of Crowder sleeping
12:23during the game.
12:24So how locked in were you there, big fella?
12:26I'll see you later.
