00:00All right. We're going to talk with Josh Appel here on the Toyota of Hollywood hotline. Before
00:04we talk football, I always remind you, best place to get geared up with Canes or Dolphins
00:08merch is Canesware in Davie or online at canesware.com. Josh Appel, play-by-play broadcaster
00:16nationally for the NFL on Sports USA, and he'll be on the call this Sunday for the Carolina
00:22Panthers and Arizona Cardinals along with Marvin Lewis. But before we talk about the NFL and
00:33your USF Bulls, I see you're proudly wearing a USF Bulls hat. What do you do with the Dolphins
00:38loss yesterday? Because that's not a traditional NFL loss. That was something you don't often
00:45see. Maybe at the end of a season when teams are banged up and they're mathematically eliminated
00:49and they're trying things out. This is a very rare loss to see game one.
00:56That was maybe one of the top five most discouraging performances by a Dolphins team, maybe in my
01:06life. You go an entire offseason talking about culture change and everybody's bought in and
01:15geysers. I've never seen this many guys stay after practice for 35 minutes like these guys were
01:21in this. And that's the performance that you come out with. There were times where I was watching and
01:30thinking to myself, what even is this? How is this the product in week one? How? And as you know,
01:40I have been a tremendous supporter of Tua Tonga Bailoa. I was in agreement with Hawk that I thought
01:48this team would be better than what national pundits thought about them. Well, I think you may be
01:53misconstruing what I thought. You're in witness protection. I forgot.
01:58Weird to be in witness protection, but also announce on Instagram where you're at and where
02:03you're staying. It's an interesting play by you. Did I say people were sleeping on this Dolphins team?
02:09I don't recall that. Admittedly, I had done a lot of drugs leading up to the Dolphins.
02:18I kept making the point. If Tua Tonga Bailoa plays, the Dolphins win because big picture in his
02:26career, that's been the case. And then I see yesterday's game. And then I see this from
02:32Barry Jackson today. Tua and Mike McDaniel are six and nine in the last 15 games that Tua has been
02:37available with 14 interceptions and eight Tua fumbles. I saw some clips from 2023 this morning,
02:47and I compared that to what I saw yesterday from Tua Tonga Bailoa. And it feels like two
02:55completely different players. And I don't know if this is like the concussions catching up to him,
03:01if his hip injury is regressive. And now like at this point, his career, it's catching up to him.
03:06He looks slow. He looks unathletic and he's never been the most athletic guy. We know that,
03:11but not like this where he looks like Joe Flacco doing pirouettes in the pocket. Like Flacco was
03:16doing. He did hit the rushing over, by the way. If you tailed me on the rushing over, he did hit that.
03:21I saw somebody post the, some clips of the all 22. I'm not putting this on,
03:26on the offensive side. Like this is 80% Tua Tonga Bailoa. Like there were plays to be made
03:33that Tua has made consistently in the past with ease that he wasn't seeing and that he wasn't making
03:40that throw on the sideline. Malik Washington, I think caught it out of bounds. Jalen Waddle and
03:46Malik Washington were both there. There was one defender there. That's a throw from the opposite to
03:50the opposite hash that Tua makes in his sleep. He took a sack deep in Indianapolis territory.
03:57Tyree kill over the middle, wide open, bailed out of it, got sacked. The interception. Okay.
04:04The first one sales, the receiver, tight window happens. Seen him make that throw before,
04:09but happens. The second one, the guy's the biggest player on the field.
04:14How do you not see the guy? You ain't see him standing there.
04:21It, it, it felt like a completely different player. And if that's the version of Tua Tonga Bailoa,
04:27the dolphins are going to get, it's untenable and they should move off of him. If this is what
04:33they're going to get. And then after the game, it just like, it's so maddening to see how he talks
04:38after performance like this, Omar Kelly says to him, you know, it just seems like there's,
04:44instances of when things start to go bad, they snowball for, for you. Multiple turnovers seem
04:50to happen in bunches for you. Is that a mental thing? Are you pressing? Like what, what's at play
04:54there? And Tua took exception to that. I believe Isaiah Smalls had this nugget three games last
05:03year. That's when Tua threw his seven interceptions since 2020. Tua has seven games with three or more
05:11interceptions that is tied for the second most in the league. And he took offense to that comment
05:17by Omar Kelly in the post-game press conference. And then he says, Oh, we'll see who's going to be
05:22in the film room on the off day on Tuesday. It like, it just feels so performative. It feels so
05:28arrogant. And like, to me, this is not the same guy that after his first start against the Rams
05:34in an empty stadium, went back out on the field and his full uniform and sat there and looked around
05:39and like, took it all in. It's like a completely different and changed person. And for the worst,
05:43like, I can't believe I'm at this point with this guy because I've defended him so much, but like,
05:51if that's the version they're going to get, it's untenable. It just is just what, cause this is a,
05:57this is the, the take. And I'm, I honestly agree with you. He looked, he didn't look very good.
06:02And his little, little personality is a little different too. Yeah. I hear what you're saying.
06:07The, the problems we knew were going to happen. Offensive line got sacked three times in the
06:12first half secondary, this, uh, storm ducking and Jack Jones being pat and Sam thing. I think
06:19Hawks running away from that a little bit now, but that's a good take. I think, I think the jury
06:25saw out on that. Admittedly, I never, I never said which Sam and which Pat, he says, Sam Howell
06:33and Pat Riley, Sam Howell. And it's Pat from Saturday night live, but John, I'm going to
06:42throw. So those were the two concerns. We never thought Tua would be a concern. I'm going to
06:46throw him in the bucket. Now out of those three, what is the biggest concern? Because we thought
06:52Tua healthy is going to be a top 15 quarterback. It didn't look like it on Sunday.
06:58That's all the evidence we have is that when he's healthy until there's recent stretch that
07:02he's a top 15 guy. I think that the biggest concern to me, and besides them still having
07:08operational problems where Mike McDaniel has to call a timeout or the taking a delay of
07:13game, like besides how maddening that is Crowder, we've talked about this when we've done shows
07:18together when I've come on with you guys in general. And I think Hawk alluded to this
07:22too, in the first segment, that front seven. I mean, that was supposed to be like the thing
07:26you could rely on. We're getting pushed around. Chop Robinson did not lay a finger on Daniel
07:32Jones yesterday. Matthew Judon, who hasn't played special teams in like 30 years. It's
07:38on special teams. At the time they actually do get a stop, he runs into the kicker.
07:42Willie Gay, who I thought was one of the best camps. Every reporter who was on site at camp
07:48did not play a single defensive step. What happened there? Isn't at some point, don't you
07:56go, hey, our defense is getting steamrolled. Maybe we'll insert someone who kind of looked
08:02good. Willie! Willie! Where's Willie? Willie! We're trying to go on offense and I'm watching
08:08them throw 10-yard ins to Alec Ingold. Like, what am I watching? What offense is this? You
08:14have Tyree Kill and Jalen Waddell and Devon Achan and Malik Washington. Like, there are guys
08:20and I'm watching ins to Alec Ingold. Like, what was any of that? And you guys nailed it.
08:26Like, there's losing games. It happens. Like, you're going to lose games. But the manner in
08:32which you do, I mean, this, how is that an offseason's worth of preparation? Like, how
08:39is that the final product? Like, how are you telling me that everything's changed and everything's
08:43different? We've done all these things. It's the worst. We'd have lost by 80 if we didn't buckle
08:50down this offseason. I'm telling you, that would have been a funny post-game press conference
08:56by Mike McDaniel and Tua. Hey, we'd have lost by 80. So, you guys should be thankful that
09:02we really got rid of the cancers and buckled down. I mean, people are calling Mike McDaniel
09:07McDungeons and Dragons right now on social media. Like, how were we here? How is this
09:14happening? Like, you said, you said, you know, if this is the version of Tua, it's untenable
09:20and they have to move on from him. And then we heard from Hawk earlier that today, today,
09:26Monday, September 8th is the one-year anniversary since the last time Tyreek Hill caught a pass
09:31or made a play for 30 yards or more. Okay. But is that like, is it on Tua? Because clearly
09:37everybody's a little frustrated with Tua today, even the biggest Tua supporters. Is it on McDaniel?
09:42Is it both? Like, what's happened to this offense then, Appel? Is it just blame everywhere?
09:48Because I think people want to just put one person up on the pedestal to blame them. But
09:53I think it's just everywhere. It's everything. It's, it's the, the composition of the team
09:57and how it's structured. Oh, they, they, they failed in every facet yesterday. Like every
10:04single, actually, except for one, uh, we were concerned about how they would be in third
10:08down and short and fourth down and short Ollie Gordon yesterday plowed ahead, got a third
10:13down and one. What? Boom. There's improvement. Um, fourth down and long. Devon H and plowed
10:19ahead. A lot of not going down. I heard you in the first segment. Are, are you kidding
10:24me with that? For the goal from the 11th swing? Fourth and 11. You're down 33 points.
10:33How do you, how do you, how do you pass out to the flat? How do you compensate for losing
10:40Jonu Smith? Big target in the end zone. Easy. Don't throw it near the end zone.
10:45The big matters worse. Jalen. I'm fine. I was fine with the Jalen Ramsey train at the time. So I'm
10:53not trying to do revisionist history here, but he makes the winning play at the end of the Steeler
10:57game. Jonu Smith has a Hunter by God long is catching touchdowns in the NFL yesterday. Like
11:04Noah fan scored a touchdown yesterday to who the dolphins brought in and decided not to sign him
11:08and got Darren Waller instead. And the guy that they chose in Kenneth grant and whatever,
11:14Kenneth grant didn't really do anything, but it doesn't matter. The defense was trash.
11:17The guy they chose, the Colts chose right after him, the tight end yesterday, first possession
11:24for the Colts, Daniel Jones. And I'm forgetting his name. Literally. I Warren. That boy can play
11:30ball, man. It looked like, it looked like Brady, the Gronkowski. It looked like Brady, the Gronkowski
11:35covering a tight end out there again. What? They ran a running play for him. That guy was
11:41everywhere. That man is going to play ball, bro.
11:45So on a, uh, Mike McDaniel actually answered your question today just a moment ago. And
11:51he basically said, well, we had opportunities yesterday and there were other guys who weren't
11:55doing their jobs. Bradley Chubb alluded to that as well. Again, how is that possible?
12:03You just got out of training camp. You just got out of three preseason games. You made a whole
12:08big deal about going to 10 days on the road and you go out there and none of you look
12:11like you want to play with each other. Like it was really remarkable. All right, Josh
12:15Chappelle, he's going to be on the call for sports USA this Sunday, Carolina and Arizona.
12:22We've got, uh, we've got more. Do not go anywhere.
12:24Do not go anywhere.
12:43Okay.
