National radio host for the Infinity Sports Network, Zach Gelb, joins the show to weigh in on the Canes-Notre Dame matchup from a national perspective. Plus, he takes issue with our headline of a previous interview.
00:00Before we talk football with Gelby, I always remind you the best place to get geared up for Canes and Dolphins season is Canesware in Davie or online at canesware.com.
00:10Zach Gelb can be heard weekday afternoons nationally on the Infinity Sports Network.
00:15Comes to us each week from the WFAN studios in New York City.
00:20Is the Miami-Notre Dame game Sunday night on your docket?
00:24Obviously, it's the Sunday night game, but is that one of the biggies that jumps out at you as you look over the weekend of college football coming up?
00:31No, absolutely.
00:32You know, it gets really started on Saturday.
00:35We have Texas and Ohio State.
00:36That's the biggest one.
00:38Then we'll see if the quarterback for Florida State could cash the check that he's been writing and Thomas Castellanos, who got benched last year by Boston College, and now he's going after Alabama.
00:48And then at night, you have the Battle of Death Valley between LSU with Brian Kelly, Tiger family, going up against Clemson.
00:58And then you move into Sunday, and there's no doubt about it.
01:00You got a little South Carolina on the docket up against a potentially underrated Virginia Tech team.
01:05And then the big one Sunday night, Notre Dame and Miami.
01:09And a game that I have a lot of questions about.
01:11I'm curious what CJ Carr is going to look like.
01:13I'm curious what Carson Beck is going to look like.
01:16Notre Dame on paper is the better team, but it's week one, so anything can happen.
01:21Did you notice, Crowder, that he didn't mention the Florida-Long Island University game over the weekend?
01:26He was mentioning some of the big games.
01:28And I'm a Long Island guy.
01:30Yeah, did you overlook that one?
01:31Because Long Island University may give Florida a run for their money.
01:35Let me tell you, I am fascinated by how we're going to be talking about Florida at the end of the year.
01:40Because everyone's slobbering over DJ Lagway.
01:43Everyone had Billy Napier fired last year in October.
01:47And usually when someone is fired and then he wins you back, then the next year they usually want to fire you again.
01:52Like it just happened with Neil Brown at West Virginia.
01:55People hated the guy.
01:56Then they're like, oh, we'll tolerate him for a little bit more.
01:58We like him.
01:59And then it was, okay, you're gone and we'll bring back Rich Rod.
02:02So I have no feel on Florida entering this year because everyone's telling me they're going to be this.
02:07They're going to be that.
02:07They're going to be great.
02:08And usually when that happens, I just elect to go the other way and I just don't buy it.
02:12I look at their minus 45 and a half.
02:16I said, yeah, let me down the line.
02:18Wow.
02:20But you know what?
02:20My alma mater in a few weeks, they are home and they play Temple plays Oklahoma.
02:26And I started to think what that spread is going to be, even though I'm a big fan of Casey Killa, the new coach.
02:32I'm starting to think that's going to be like a 65 and a half point spread or something like that.
02:35So LIU must be good then.
02:36That's a little light.
02:38Or Florida's not very good.
02:41DJ Lagway can play.
02:42I don't know.
02:42They said Napier stayed around because I guess the sophomore class was so good going now being a junior.
02:50That's what I heard because I know some of the Bull Gators.
02:53Napier to me stayed because of DJ Lagway.
02:57Like he got, like Lagway's there.
03:00If Napier would have left, I think Lagway would have entered the transfer portal.
03:04And that's what happens now.
03:06And a lot, it's actually tougher to get fired as a head coach now in college football because of how easy it is for players to transfer out.
03:15And like, look, when Nick Saban, obviously that's a legendary Nick Saban.
03:18When he elected to retire and they brought in Caelan DeBoer, who was just in a national championship game with Washington,
03:24you still had players that entered the transfer portal.
03:27Like look at Caleb Downs, who's one of the best defensive players in the country.
03:30He's been on Ohio State now for the last two seasons because of that.
03:35Do you think, is there anybody in that top, those top teams that you think is fraudulent?
03:38Because this Clemson is getting me.
03:41Everybody's praising Clemson.
03:42Clemson was not good last year.
03:44They love Club Nick.
03:45They have a front four that six guys are going in the first two rounds.
03:49I just, I watched them last year.
03:51I'm not impressed by Clemson.
03:52I don't know why everybody has them ranked so high.
03:54Well, I think it's a bigger problem in college football.
03:57I don't think you need to be great anymore to win a national championship.
04:00Like you don't need to be the Canes teams from back in the day.
04:02You don't need to be LSU when they had Orgeron and Burrow and Jefferson, even when Michigan was undefeated a few years ago.
04:09Like look at Ohio State.
04:10After they lost to Michigan, they had a talented team, the most talented team in the country.
04:14But did anyone think they were going to win a national championship?
04:16No, but it's just survival of the fittest as you go through the ups and downs of what is now not only a full season, but then a 12-game or 12-team college football playoff.
04:26So I'm someone that never, the last few years I've been really down on Dabo Sweeney because he's just like, he hasn't even won the ACC all the time.
04:33I know he won it last year, but the standard there that he built to his credit at Clemson is to win a national championship.
04:38And you look at Penn State.
04:39I don't ever trust them in the big game.
04:40But as we go into this year, Penn State and Clemson are both very good teams.
04:46I don't know if we have a great team in college football entering this season.
04:50And I do think it's going to be another one of those years where a very good team wins a national championship.
04:54So yeah, I think Clemson, and I'm strict on these teams, I think Clemson can win a national championship this year.
05:00Yeah, but don't you love the parody, Gelb?
05:02I would argue the 12-team college football playoff already in just one season has proven to be a success.
05:08I mean, you could argue whether or not the right teams got in at the end.
05:11We all feel like Miami should have, despite them not getting in.
05:14And obviously Alabama had a case last season also.
05:17But I think, you know, you saw a season ago.
05:20You could lose a game.
05:21You could lose two games, still be a great team, and still have the opportunity late to put it all together.
05:25So last year, remember when the NBA play-in tournament was introduced?
05:29Like you had that run where, oh, you got LeBron and Steph in it.
05:33And then, oh, you had the heat, right?
05:35Didn't they make a run from the play-in tournament to the NBA finals?
05:38So things happened where it ended up working.
05:41Now, do we really give a rat's ass about the NBA play-in tournament?
05:45Like, do we care who seven and eight is?
05:47I do.
05:48Nine and ten.
05:49All right, yeah, okay.
05:50You're asking the wrong guy.
05:52Okay, so I'll ask that question to Hawk and Crowder and just forget.
05:55And we'll pretend Solana's name isn't on the show anymore.
05:58No.
05:58I wish both the tournament and Solana's name would disappear.
06:04Yeah.
06:05Last year, everyone stubbed their toe, got back up, then stubbed it again, then got back up.
06:11I'm just curious if things aren't as crazy as it was last year, if it's that great.
06:17And people were still bitching about the first weekend, the first games.
06:20They thought it was bad.
06:21So 12 is fine.
06:22I think it's fine.
06:23But we're already having talks 14, 16, or the Big Tens throwing out 24 or 28.
06:28Like, what the F are we doing?
06:29That's way too many teams.
06:31They should have just gone from four to eight and then expand from there if they wanted to.
06:36Four to 12 is too drastic of a jump.
06:37And it's going to be more than 12 coming up soon.
06:39I want to jump into the NFL before we run out of time with Gelby.
06:44And by the way, congratulations are in order.
06:47Did we see that you nationally for Compass Media are going to be hosting the pregame show nationally
06:56for the Dallas Cowboys radio broadcasts?
06:58Yeah.
06:58So a very exciting opportunity where I'm going to do four Cowboys games this year, pre-half and post,
07:03and then two other national NFL games to be determined.
07:06And so, you know, I was just channeling my inner Alejandro Solana.
07:10You know, he was on those heat broadcasts.
07:12And I said, for the first time in my life, I said, I got to be like Solana and get involved on a team broadcast.
07:16It's very much like Gino Toretta has Touchdown Radio or Appel, you know, does broadcast for Sports USA.
07:23Compass broadcasts games nationally, and they do a lot of Cowboys games.
07:26So do you want to have Proud around to talk about Dak Prescott week one?
07:31Yeah.
07:31Yeah, anything that I said in the past about the Dallas Cowboys, I strike it from the record.
07:37And I think Channing Crowder is one of the great frauds that we ever had.
07:40This guy was a coward saying, 4-4-4, I love you 4, slobbering and basically mouth-swapping with Dak Prescott,
07:49then comes on my show and absolutely eviscerated him.
07:51Dak Prescott's the best quarterback in the league.
07:53F Mahomes.
07:54Welcome to the game, Gelby.
07:56Welcome to the game.
07:57Gary Jones, what a guy, right?
07:58Let me tell you, Jerry Jones, everything that he did when handling Jimmy Johnson was 100% right as well.
08:05And Michael Parsons, what a clown that guy is.
08:07Tell his agent to go shove it.
08:10Don't worry, Gelb.
08:11I talk bad about people for a decade.
08:13I get them on the podcast.
08:14I'm their best friend.
08:16Hey, what's up, big man?
08:18Love you to death.
08:19Well, you know what I do?
08:20Stephen A. Smith does this, and I start catching myself doing this more and more.
08:24I really like this guy.
08:25He's a really good dude, but, and then I absolutely just destroy the person.
08:29Yeah.
08:30You know, I had that run-in with Big Justice and AJ, Big Boom, AJ, and Boca,
08:36and Crowder has eviscerated these guys for a year.
08:39Big Fat Meatballs.
08:41And, oh, how's that for a new banger?
08:43That is a new banger.
08:44It's stuck in my head.
08:45Their new song, Big Fat Meatballs, mentions Gabagool in it.
08:49I mean, these guys are kismet with me.
08:51But, anyway, Crowder has ripped them for over a year.
08:55The moment he meets them, man, love what you do with Big Fat Meatballs.
09:00Crowder spent a year.
09:02Jimmy has gone to a couple of Savannah Bananas games.
09:06My wife is intrigued by the Savannah Bananas.
09:08We've watched them on TV.
09:10Crowder torched the whole idea of the Savannah Bananas.
09:14And then I don't know if you watched the Pivot podcast.
09:16These grown men playing around on stilts.
09:17I don't know if you watched the Pivot podcast.
09:18It seemed like they had some sort of paid partnership with the Savannah Bananas.
09:23And Crowder has startlingly changed his tune on how entertaining their baseball games are.
09:31Can I defend Crowder?
09:32Crowder tells you he's a whore.
09:34He doesn't act like a whore and then tell you that he is a virgin.
09:38This guy could be bought and the price is not that high to buy Channing Crowder.
09:44I told you.
09:45I think I've told you the story.
09:46So when we used to work at 790, the ticket years ago, and Sid Rosenberg was the morning guy.
09:51We had our holiday party at a restaurant in Parkland that he had endorsed for three years.
09:58Talking about this is better than Cafe Matarano.
10:02This place, this is my go-to.
10:04You know how Sid is.
10:05And he's going on and on.
10:07I mean, for years.
10:08Tell us.
10:09We do the holiday party there.
10:11I remember Levitard leans over to him and he's like, I don't think this food's very good.
10:15And Sid looks around and he goes, my whole life is a lie.
10:22Can I ask a personal question here?
10:27We'll go.
10:28Let it go.
10:29No, no.
10:29I think Hawk may get, I don't know if you're going to get annoyed at me or not.
10:33And I've been following this from afar.
10:35But I keep on seeing you doing these Stu Gatz appearances.
10:38Do you feel like Stu's using you to just maybe say some bad things about Dan since I guess
10:43they had a split?
10:45Oh, I don't care if he's using me.
10:46It gives me a forum to say bad things about Dan.
10:49What do I care?
10:50We're mutually using each other.
10:53I haven't really like followed it that much, but I keep on seeing clips of you hanging out
10:58with Stu.
10:58And then I read this article that Stu doesn't like Dan anymore.
11:01And I go, is my guy Hawk just getting used to really voice the true opinions of Stu Gatz?
11:05I'm happy to get used if I get something in return.
11:08You're a whore, too.
11:10Check out the Crowder episode of Stupodity.
11:15Yeah, Crowder.
11:16Stupodity renamed Stupodity.
11:18I didn't see that one.
11:19Stupodity today.
11:19Stupodity.
11:21I've only seen Hawkman's appearance.
11:23I haven't seen Crowder's appearance.
11:25No, yeah.
11:26Real quick.
11:27NFL-wise, congrats on the Cowboys job.
11:29I just saw on sportsbetting.ag, odds first NFL coach fired this season.
11:37You want to guess who it is, Gal?
11:38McDaniel.
11:39Mike McDaniel is 2-1 right now over Brian Dable, who I think was the favorite just a few weeks
11:46ago.
11:47But he has Dart now, so that connection maybe gives him more of a leash.
11:51I told you last week you guys were Jackson Dart crazy, and you tried to deny it.
11:55Now you're telling me because he's got Jackson Dart, he's going down the list of boats.
11:58So I'm actually really annoyed with this show.
12:00I think you're all a bunch of a-holes, and here's why.
12:05Last week, I have a video out there criticizing the Giants for drafting Jackson Dart.
12:10I thought they should have drafted Shador Sanders.
12:12And I told you guys last week, I don't even think the guy is even all that good.
12:17Now he's playing well in the preseason, but with what he's done in the preseason, I'd
12:20rather see him over Russell Wilson.
12:22Then you guys put out a headline, Zach Gelb loves Jackson Dart.
12:25Why the heck do I ever say that?
12:28I don't even know where to write the headline, so that's got to be Spelana.
12:31You're a big, fat New Yorker, giant fan, which I am not a big, fat New Yorker anymore,
12:36slightly less fat.
12:37And I'm not a giant fan.
12:39And then you're like, slobbers over Jackson Dart.
12:42Something I've never done.
12:43Spelana, that sounds like your department there.
12:46Sounds like he was annoyed about the stone crabs last week, all the bashing we did of him.
12:49All I heard, all I heard during that entire segment, other than Gelb having terrible taste
12:54in food, is that he's a huge, huge New York Giants fan, and he loves Jackson Dart.
12:59He wants him to start.
13:00That's all I heard.
13:01The Giants produced the two more sports losses of my, of my life.
13:04Ah, you have two Super Bowls.
13:06Six of them, actually.
13:07But it's not you.
13:08He says he's not a, he's not a Giants fan.
13:11Yeah.
13:12Very annoyed here with Solana.
13:14Can I ask one more question here in the NFL world?
13:16Go ahead.
13:17All right.
13:18Travis Kelsey Taylor Swift just got engaged yesterday.
13:20The only one that didn't know that was Mike McDaniel, which is crazy to me.
13:24So Solana has the Kelsey kind of mustache.
13:26He's a Kelsey wannabe.
13:28Hawk, I think, could actually ordain the wedding.
13:30And then Channing is just a star.
13:31Out of the three of you, who do you think is most likely to get invited to the wedding?
13:36Me.
13:38I've met Travis Kelsey.
13:40He did.
13:41He had Kelsey on the pivot.
13:43I drank with him in Kansas City a couple years ago.
13:46Here's the thing, though.
13:46I have a Boca Raton connection with them.
13:48You know, they have a house here in Boca.
13:50Do they?
13:51Yeah.
13:51Are you serious?
13:52Yeah.
13:53Oh, okay.
13:54Oh, my Siri just went off when I said that.
13:55That was cool.
13:56Actually, Taylor Swift plays pickleball.
13:59And I am Kendall's most prominent pickleball player.
14:02All that has to happen is one tournament.
14:04Where did you buy that medal that you were showing Fred Taylor, by the way, yesterday?
14:07Oh, my goodness gracious.
14:08Get it off the Amazon?
14:09Won it.
14:10All I have to do is get paired up with the T-Swizzle team, mix 4.0, her and I, kindred spirits on the pickleball court.
14:18Look at the people on the podium that he's playing against.
14:21Because he's one.
14:22Look at two.
14:23Yeah, my uncle has one leg was playing up against Solana.
14:26Yeah, well, it looks like it's a podium.
14:28It's actually two people are leaning down next to him on their walkers.
14:30So, it looks like he's standing in the middle of a podium.
14:33And by the way, you know what?
14:34Actually, my uncle does have two legs.
14:36I was just making a joke.
14:37He'll, like, call me.
14:37I was listening on the radio.
14:39You said I had one leg.
14:40He is an elite pickleball player.
14:41I think we should do Uncle Kenny up against Solana.
14:46I'll be in Long Island.
14:47I'm going to Long Island this weekend.
14:49He lives in Florida.
14:50Even better.
14:51He's 72 years old.
14:52He would kick your effing ass.
14:55We have to make this happen.
14:58He has to lose to a 72-year-old man.
15:02How do we make this happen, Gellman?
15:05I'll text my uncle.
15:06I'm sure he would like to do this.
15:09And he lives in a community.
15:10So, you would just go to him and then have him play?
15:11Now, ask me if he's heard of the Dink Club.
15:13Solana lost playing at the Dink Club.
15:14And if he doesn't play on his home court, he's going to complain about the conditions.
15:18Because he did it when he lost in tennis to Ira Winderman in his 60s and Joe Rose in tennis.
15:23I don't plan to play.
15:24I don't plan to play.
15:25So, he already has a track record of losing a senior citizen.
15:28Yeah, he's going to get wiped off the court by your uncle.
15:33Hey, set it up with the old geezer, Gellb.
15:34Let me know.
15:35You got it.
15:36I'll ask you.
15:37We got to go.
15:37He would happily do it.
15:38He would murder you.
15:39We got stuff to do.
15:40We got stuff to do.
15:41Listen to Zach Gellb.
15:42The Crowder family is missing some feet, though.
15:44And that's no joke.
15:46And that happens to me.
15:48Deion Sanders and Channing Crowder have the same feet I hear.
15:51If Crowder has a pool party for his extended family and there's 18 people there, you're going to see nine shoes.
15:58Yeah.
16:00A lot of crops.
16:01They swim in circles.
16:02My whole life is a lie.
16:05All right.
16:06Zach Gellb.
16:07Listen to him on the Infinity Sports Network.
