00:00
And I texted Omar this morning.
00:02
I said, hey, I want to talk about the Tua situation.
00:05
Talk is off, but I'd like you to join Crowder and I.
00:08
And I was telling everybody earlier in the show, Omar,
00:10
he joins us on the Toyota Hollywood Hotline, Miami Dolphins columnist,
00:14
covering the team for the Miami Herald.
00:17
Yesterday, I had asked Zach Gelb, who joins us.
00:19
He's a national talk show host.
00:20
We were just kind of asking him his national perspective on the Dolphins.
00:24
He's not geared in like you are, obviously, around the team,
00:26
but he's got a good pulse of what's going on, Omar.
00:28
And we asked him what he thought the interest around the league would be
00:34
for Tua Tungabailoa this offseason or what he would have to do to garner interest.
00:39
And he said his opinion that he thinks it would be virtually impossible
00:44
for the Dolphins to trade Tua at the end of the season.
00:47
And I clicked it and I posted it on social media.
00:50
This morning, I'm just looking at the comments.
00:52
And Caleb Smith commented on Facebook, according to Omar Kelly,
00:57
there's a huge market for Tua.
00:59
They don't say huge.
01:01
Well, and he said, so why don't y'all get him on this topic?
01:05
I said, okay, Caleb.
01:06
All right.
01:07
I'll get Omar on this topic then.
01:09
I want to be free and fair here.
01:11
I'll get Omar on this topic.
01:12
So, Omar, I would like to ask you, you know,
01:16
beyond everything else from today, you were at practice.
01:20
You spoke to some of the players.
01:21
I see there's no more Papa shot, which I can't wait to talk to you about.
01:26
What do you really think the market would be for Tua?
01:30
Or does he have to play a certain way this final stretch,
01:34
final half of the season in order to bolster the idea of somebody trading for him?
01:40
I want you to know that you inspired my column that will be in today's Miami Herald,
01:45
where the whole bottom portion explains what's remaining on Tua's contract.
01:52
It's probably the most complicated situation to sum up to anybody.
01:58
But the bottom line is Tua is getting $55 million from the Dolphins
02:03
or somebody else next year.
02:05
Who pays it?
02:06
Who knows?
02:08
And if you cut him, then you're basically having a dead cap of $99 million.
02:12
So, he's playing in the NFL unless he retires and cashes out an injury settlement.
02:19
And I think that that's a slim possibility.
02:21
Now, when I said that there are teams that were interested in Tua,
02:24
that was based on me talking, reporting.
02:27
And I know head coaches that are definitely interested in Tua.
02:31
One of them does have a quarterback now.
02:33
And then one of them, it depends on the situation, how the season plays out.
02:38
He might not have a quarterback.
02:40
He might have a quarterback.
02:41
Then you look at the New Orleans Saints.
02:43
You telling me that if they don't end up with one of these hopeful quarterbacks,
02:47
that they're not going to be interested in Tua and putting him in the dome situation?
02:52
I find that hard to believe, especially considering his head coach is a lefty and just like him.
02:59
So, obviously, you know, there's some commonalities there.
03:03
There will be interest in Tua.
03:05
The contract is not ideal.
03:07
It's really going to be a turnoff to everybody.
03:10
But that's the reality of the situation.
03:12
I mean, Tua, but I have a hard time believing that he's not going to be here next year.
03:18
And, oh, to that point, or just to the attention he's getting or the interest he'll have,
03:23
my thing is Tua can play football in this league.
03:25
That's not what I'm saying when I say, you know, low interest.
03:28
Because is somebody going to hand him the reins again?
03:32
He's our franchise.
03:33
Like, it's Tua, because I think, I don't know if you heard me, O.
03:36
I think 2023, he's coming up.
03:39
He's moving.
03:39
He hit 2023.
03:40
I think we hit the bell curve and he's going back down or at least plateauing.
03:44
I don't think we're going to see a better Tua than 2023.
03:46
Listen, even Tua said, and this is part of the column, he's trying to get back to where I was.
03:53
I don't understand why my game has changed and why I'm not feeling as comfortable as I am.
04:00
I know why.
04:00
But, you know, I'm not feeling as comfortable.
04:03
My footwork isn't right.
04:05
You know, I'm trying to get back to that old form.
04:07
And I'm thinking to myself, what receivers?
04:10
I'm thinking to myself, what offensive line?
04:14
You know, he's, and this is not to make excuses for him.
04:18
He does not look like the same quarterback.
04:20
He is, you know, he got that Jay Cutler disease where if you're coming close to him,
04:25
mm-mm, mm-mm, I'm throwing the ball away.
04:28
Like, mm-mm, it's out of my hand.
04:29
Like, don't hit him.
04:31
But he's also instructed to do this.
04:34
He's instructed to play this way.
04:36
Because everybody hammered in his brain,
04:38
just keep yourself available to the team.
04:40
Okay.
04:41
Well, it's altered his game a little bit, slightly.
04:44
Just a little bit.
04:46
What?
04:46
Oh, to that point.
04:47
So, I think you're a little higher on Tua than me.
04:51
Yeah.
04:51
But we talked about it where, like, the Lions offense,
04:55
that play action having two hellified running backs,
04:57
you can run the ball and win games.
04:58
Now you have the deep ball play action.
05:01
Tua's arm, I don't think, can thrive in that deep ball offense.
05:05
He can't play in the Ravens offense or the Bills offense.
05:08
He's not athletic enough.
05:09
Like, what kind of offense does Tua have to play in?
05:12
Does it have to be timing and throwing the windows?
05:14
Yeah.
05:14
But he thrived in that offense,
05:16
and he thrived throwing the deep balls in 22 and 23.
05:19
We just haven't seen it in 24.
05:21
Now, has the arm slightly decreased?
05:25
I don't know.
05:25
Maybe.
05:25
But I've seen Tua throw a 45 yards on a rope.
05:29
That's not his strength.
05:31
But that wasn't Ryan Tannehill's strength.
05:32
And he played, what, 10 seasons, if not more,
05:36
as a starter in the NFL, I don't think it's the deep ball.
05:40
I mean, and realistically, I saw Jalen Walter,
05:42
who are you throwing the deep ball to on this team?
05:46
I don't necessarily think.
05:47
Alec Ingold.
05:47
Apparently Alec Ingold, Omar.
05:51
I do think he needs a little bit more targets,
05:54
but that's a whole.
05:55
Stop.
05:55
Stop.
05:56
Listen.
05:57
Listen, nobody ever defends Alec Ingold.
05:59
Think about it.
06:00
They always assume he's blocking.
06:02
And what's supposed to be face blocks and goes out for a route.
06:06
You know what I'm saying?
06:07
On somebody like Channing Crowder, he'd probably be open.
06:10
Wow.
06:10
We got you for 11 yards.
06:13
Now you can't base no offense around that.
06:17
I mean, what you want.
06:19
Listen, it's funny I say this, Crowder, you could understand.
06:23
Do you realize that their best offense is six offensive linemen on the field
06:27
and four targets?
06:28
It's like they said, forget the fifth target.
06:31
We can play well if we can protect the quarterback.
06:35
Think about that for a little bit.
06:37
If you run the ball better and you protect the quarterback
06:40
and he really don't need five outlets,
06:43
why wouldn't you think about just going with six offensive linemen?
06:46
Just think about it a little bit.
06:48
It works.
06:49
Omar, if Crowder could have been on the field as a linebacker
06:53
going up against a team that had Larry Borum
06:55
and Greg Dulcich as the two tight ends, you'd still be in the league.
06:59
Pro Bowler.
07:00
You'd still be in the league.
07:02
What?
07:03
I could lock down Borum.
07:05
It's so cold.
07:08
Oh, but listen, you're right, too.
07:11
The sixth offensive lineman thing.
07:12
They're going to figure that out.
07:14
They're going to know Fat Boy.
07:14
Yeah, they will figure it out.
07:15
They're going to start doubling people.
07:17
Like that was the thing about Mike McDaniel's stuff.
07:19
And Arande Gaston called it years ago.
07:21
So if his stuff works, it works.
07:24
If they got him, he can't turn a page over.
07:30
There's no plan B is what we kept calling.
07:32
It seemed like the sixth offensive lineman was a plan B,
07:36
but the plan B didn't hit until three weeks ago.
07:38
Hell, yeah, we're four years in.
07:40
I was begging them the year three when they couldn't run the ball
07:43
to go to a jumbo package.
07:45
But, you know, that's besides the point.
07:49
Right now they're problem solving.
07:50
They don't have Darren Waller.
07:52
They don't have Tyreek Hill.
07:54
You really, I mean, who is your second best weapon?
07:56
Malik Washington?
07:58
Like, you know, Devon A. Chan is catching,
08:02
probably going to catch more balls than any back in team history
08:05
at this point.
08:07
You know, you have two legit weapons on this team.
08:10
Who in the NFL can you beat with two legit weapons?
08:15
Obviously the Falcons.
08:16
They just caught him sleeping on that sixth offensive lineman.
08:25
Omar, before we let you go, I know you have a busy day ahead of you.
08:34
The plan right now from the front office, they let go of Chris Greer.
08:37
I don't think anybody's very surprised that that was the move.
08:41
But I do think there's people who are surprised Mike McDaniel is sticking around here.
08:46
The plan moving forward where we're reading reports that Mike McDaniel might still have
08:51
a job next season, depending on how he does this year.
08:54
What do you make of the whole thing?
08:55
I mean, I see you laughing.
08:57
What do you make of this entire situation?
08:59
You keep Greer, but are you, you let go of Greer, but not McDaniel.
09:02
Like, how is this going to work out?
09:02
Let me, let me, let me, let me, let me counter your reports, which is, I mean, what else
09:07
are they going to say to, let me counter your reports.
09:11
Crowder, you remember when Joey stepped up in the, in the meeting room and basically
09:14
it was like, uh, Cam Cameron, you don't know what you're doing.
09:18
Yeah.
09:19
Right next to him.
09:21
I was grabbing, I was grabbing his, his pant leg, like a little kid trying to keep daddy
09:24
home.
09:26
Sit down.
09:28
Man, you full of bleep.
09:29
You don't know what the hell's going on.
09:31
Yeah.
09:31
Yeah.
09:32
Listen, the minute the locker room is, you don't know what's going on.
09:37
You can't fix it.
09:39
And like, we are doomed and they start checking out.
09:43
You're done.
09:44
You're done as a head coach.
09:46
Gase tried to change the entire locker room.
09:49
Who was it?
09:50
Was it Gase or Joe Philbin?
09:51
Joe Philbin.
09:52
I think Joe Philbin tried to change the entire locker room too.
09:55
It doesn't matter when they check out, they check out and they not coming back.
09:58
Like, there's nothing you could do as long as one or two players is there.
10:04
They'll sit there in the meeting room and be like, this guy, this dude, they don't know
10:07
what he's doing.
10:08
Yeah.
10:08
Yeah.
10:09
So all these people were saying, Mike safe, Mike safe.
10:13
Mike safe.
10:13
If they start winning games, maybe.
10:16
But, but think about it from Steve Ross's perspective.
10:18
How can you sell this team to a fan base?
10:22
If you bring Mike back, exactly.
10:24
What do you say?
10:25
What do you do?
10:26
This fan base is they've done.
10:28
They're like, no more this.
10:30
I'm good.
10:31
I'm tapping out.
10:32
And I really don't know if you could do anything other than massive change up to get their interest
10:40
again.
10:41
And it's, it's, it's, it's going to be a tough uphill battle for this Dolphins organization.
10:45
They took out the Papa shot.
10:48
Yeah.
10:49
They were interested in Papa shot.
10:51
Now they're not thinking about Papa.
10:53
They're getting ready for Buffalo.
10:54
Omar.
10:55
Right.
10:56
Listen, it was taken over their mind.
10:58
Listen, it's so funny because it's a Papa shot and a basketball rim.
11:03
But they took out both of them.
11:05
And those things must've taken so many shots.
11:09
The Papa shot been broken like four times already.
11:12
We are on week nine.
11:13
The Papa shot has been broken like four times.
11:16
We're in the locker room.
11:18
There might be 300, 300, 400 shots taken, you know, from the Papa shot.
11:24
You walk into the shower, Papa shot, Papa shot.
11:27
You try, you try, you know, you know how it is, Crowder.
11:31
It's, you know what?
11:33
It's, it was a gathering thing.
11:35
It was a meeting place.
11:36
It was a bonding thing.
11:38
I guess they figured week nine, we done bonded.
11:40
We good.
11:40
So, so the Papa shot was, uh, was a distraction.
11:47
What's the care?
11:48
Me and Salah talked about this earlier.
11:50
You're talking about motivation or people checking out on McDaniel.
11:53
What is the carrot that you're checking?
11:55
What's the carrot that they're, I guess, what are they selling the players as that carrot
11:59
that they're chasing?
11:59
Uh, it's funny cause Bradley Chubb called, he's like, I might be delusional, but I still
12:05
think we got a shot at winning the game.
12:07
And I'll be like, okay, Bradley, you are indeed delusional.
12:11
Um, people are playing for their futures, NFL futures for their future roles, for their
12:17
future contracts, for their future employer, maybe for their future head coach.
12:20
Um, this is, this is really about, you know, this is when you get the, the, the repeated
12:26
to you, the eye in the sky.
12:28
Don't lie.
12:29
I got to put good stuff on film because that's going to be my resume.
12:32
Like, you know, you cannot quit on a team.
12:35
It makes it very hard on you when you do quit on a team and people are not going to want
12:40
to employ you.
12:42
Omar, do you eat nachos?
12:44
No, I just, geez, why would I do that?
12:48
I knew, I knew that because you don't eat sandwiches.
12:51
Today's national nachos day.
12:52
I figured nachos, there's just too much going on on a, on a plate for you.
12:56
It's the cheese component.
12:58
I'll eat the chips with some picadillo.
13:01
I mean, I'll pick a deal.
13:02
Salsa.
13:02
Um, I forget what people.
13:05
You eat guac?
13:07
No.
13:07
Like guac and chips?
13:08
You don't eat guacamole?
13:09
No.
13:10
I will, I will eat it in a, in a, in a roll, but I'll be like, but I'll survive with it
13:18
in a roll, but I'm, I'm not enjoying it.
13:21
No, I know.
13:21
I don't enjoy guac.
13:23
Wow.
13:23
Crazy.
13:24
Y'all grown men don't eat.
13:26
You don't eat like mozzarella sticks.
13:29
Oh, I do eat mozzarella.
13:30
If it's mozzarella, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll give it a try.
13:32
Oh, it's fried.
13:33
He likes fried cheese.
13:33
You like fried cheese.
13:35
Pizza and mozzarella sticks is probably about the, the, the extent of my cheese experience.
13:40
But, but I mean, if I eat cheese, you, whoever's around me going to pay the consequences.
13:44
It's not just that I don't like it.
13:47
You got that milk.
13:48
Yeah.
13:49
Cheese don't like me either.
13:50
You, you, you, you, you've been vegan for a hot minute.
13:53
You, you know, when you stop eating all that stuff.
13:55
Oh man.
13:56
This guy, any TikTok trend, Omar, this guy is taking down prebiotic, probiotic, kombucha.
14:04
He spent $75 on some health vitamins downstairs.
14:08
And meanwhile, he, he threw down 7,000 calories of sushi in between each of those kombuchas.
14:14
Hey, oh, you're getting on your peptides and your collagen.
14:16
You got to get your peptide collagen in you.
14:19
You know what?
14:20
The collagen, I do need to research it.
14:22
Like, yeah.
14:24
All the, all them old cougars, they, they real big on the collagen.
14:28
You know what I'm saying?
14:28
It keeps me young.
14:29
Look at, he looks all sick and, and, and, and meagely.
14:32
What do you guys know about that collagen?
14:34
He's TikTok health guy, final boss.
14:38
Omar Kelly, read his work.
14:40
By the way, it looks like our show inspired a column tonight.
14:42
That's pretty cool.
14:43
Read it.
14:44
Miamiherald.com.
14:45
Omar, we love you, man.
14:46
Thank you so much.
14:47
I guess.
14:48
All right.
14:49
Omar Kelly, ladies and gentlemen.
14:50
I knew, I knew Omar, the nachos question.
14:53
I had it written down.
14:54
I'm like, no way he eats nachos.
14:55
I just knew it.
