00:00And I texted Omar this morning.
00:02I said, hey, I want to talk about the Tua situation.
00:05Talk is off, but I'd like you to join Crowder and I.
00:08And I was telling everybody earlier in the show, Omar,
00:10he joins us on the Toyota Hollywood Hotline, Miami Dolphins columnist,
00:14covering the team for the Miami Herald.
00:17Yesterday, I had asked Zach Gelb, who joins us.
00:19He's a national talk show host.
00:20We were just kind of asking him his national perspective on the Dolphins.
00:24He's not geared in like you are, obviously, around the team,
00:26but he's got a good pulse of what's going on, Omar.
00:28And we asked him what he thought the interest around the league would be
00:34for Tua Tungabailoa this offseason or what he would have to do to garner interest.
00:39And he said his opinion that he thinks it would be virtually impossible
00:44for the Dolphins to trade Tua at the end of the season.
00:47And I clicked it and I posted it on social media.
00:50This morning, I'm just looking at the comments.
00:52And Caleb Smith commented on Facebook, according to Omar Kelly,
00:57there's a huge market for Tua.
00:59They don't say huge.
01:01Well, and he said, so why don't y'all get him on this topic?
01:05I said, okay, Caleb.
01:06All right.
01:07I'll get Omar on this topic then.
01:09I want to be free and fair here.
01:11I'll get Omar on this topic.
01:12So, Omar, I would like to ask you, you know,
01:16beyond everything else from today, you were at practice.
01:20You spoke to some of the players.
01:21I see there's no more Papa shot, which I can't wait to talk to you about.
01:26What do you really think the market would be for Tua?
01:30Or does he have to play a certain way this final stretch,
01:34final half of the season in order to bolster the idea of somebody trading for him?
01:40I want you to know that you inspired my column that will be in today's Miami Herald,
01:45where the whole bottom portion explains what's remaining on Tua's contract.
01:52It's probably the most complicated situation to sum up to anybody.
01:58But the bottom line is Tua is getting $55 million from the Dolphins
02:03or somebody else next year.
02:05Who pays it?
02:06Who knows?
02:08And if you cut him, then you're basically having a dead cap of $99 million.
02:12So, he's playing in the NFL unless he retires and cashes out an injury settlement.
02:19And I think that that's a slim possibility.
02:21Now, when I said that there are teams that were interested in Tua,
02:24that was based on me talking, reporting.
02:27And I know head coaches that are definitely interested in Tua.
02:31One of them does have a quarterback now.
02:33And then one of them, it depends on the situation, how the season plays out.
02:38He might not have a quarterback.
02:40He might have a quarterback.
02:41Then you look at the New Orleans Saints.
02:43You telling me that if they don't end up with one of these hopeful quarterbacks,
02:47that they're not going to be interested in Tua and putting him in the dome situation?
02:52I find that hard to believe, especially considering his head coach is a lefty and just like him.
02:59So, obviously, you know, there's some commonalities there.
03:03There will be interest in Tua.
03:05The contract is not ideal.
03:07It's really going to be a turnoff to everybody.
03:10But that's the reality of the situation.
03:12I mean, Tua, but I have a hard time believing that he's not going to be here next year.
03:18And, oh, to that point, or just to the attention he's getting or the interest he'll have,
03:23my thing is Tua can play football in this league.
03:25That's not what I'm saying when I say, you know, low interest.
03:28Because is somebody going to hand him the reins again?
03:32He's our franchise.
03:33Like, it's Tua, because I think, I don't know if you heard me, O.
03:36I think 2023, he's coming up.
03:39He's moving.
03:39He hit 2023.
03:40I think we hit the bell curve and he's going back down or at least plateauing.
03:44I don't think we're going to see a better Tua than 2023.
03:46Listen, even Tua said, and this is part of the column, he's trying to get back to where I was.
03:53I don't understand why my game has changed and why I'm not feeling as comfortable as I am.
04:00I know why.
04:00But, you know, I'm not feeling as comfortable.
04:03My footwork isn't right.
04:05You know, I'm trying to get back to that old form.
04:07And I'm thinking to myself, what receivers?
04:10I'm thinking to myself, what offensive line?
04:14You know, he's, and this is not to make excuses for him.
04:18He does not look like the same quarterback.
04:20He is, you know, he got that Jay Cutler disease where if you're coming close to him,
04:25mm-mm, mm-mm, I'm throwing the ball away.
04:28Like, mm-mm, it's out of my hand.
04:29Like, don't hit him.
04:31But he's also instructed to do this.
04:34He's instructed to play this way.
04:36Because everybody hammered in his brain,
04:38just keep yourself available to the team.
04:40Okay.
04:41Well, it's altered his game a little bit, slightly.
04:44Just a little bit.
04:46What?
04:46Oh, to that point.
04:47So, I think you're a little higher on Tua than me.
04:51Yeah.
04:51But we talked about it where, like, the Lions offense,
04:55that play action having two hellified running backs,
04:57you can run the ball and win games.
04:58Now you have the deep ball play action.
05:01Tua's arm, I don't think, can thrive in that deep ball offense.
05:05He can't play in the Ravens offense or the Bills offense.
05:08He's not athletic enough.
05:09Like, what kind of offense does Tua have to play in?
05:12Does it have to be timing and throwing the windows?
05:14Yeah.
05:14But he thrived in that offense,
05:16and he thrived throwing the deep balls in 22 and 23.
05:19We just haven't seen it in 24.
05:21Now, has the arm slightly decreased?
05:25I don't know.
05:25Maybe.
05:25But I've seen Tua throw a 45 yards on a rope.
05:29That's not his strength.
05:31But that wasn't Ryan Tannehill's strength.
05:32And he played, what, 10 seasons, if not more,
05:36as a starter in the NFL, I don't think it's the deep ball.
05:40I mean, and realistically, I saw Jalen Walter,
05:42who are you throwing the deep ball to on this team?
05:46I don't necessarily think.
05:47Alec Ingold.
05:47Apparently Alec Ingold, Omar.
05:51I do think he needs a little bit more targets,
05:54but that's a whole.
05:55Stop.
05:55Stop.
05:56Listen.
05:57Listen, nobody ever defends Alec Ingold.
05:59Think about it.
06:00They always assume he's blocking.
06:02And what's supposed to be face blocks and goes out for a route.
06:06You know what I'm saying?
06:07On somebody like Channing Crowder, he'd probably be open.
06:10Wow.
06:10We got you for 11 yards.
06:13Now you can't base no offense around that.
06:17I mean, what you want.
06:19Listen, it's funny I say this, Crowder, you could understand.
06:23Do you realize that their best offense is six offensive linemen on the field
06:27and four targets?
06:28It's like they said, forget the fifth target.
06:31We can play well if we can protect the quarterback.
06:35Think about that for a little bit.
06:37If you run the ball better and you protect the quarterback
06:40and he really don't need five outlets,
06:43why wouldn't you think about just going with six offensive linemen?
06:46Just think about it a little bit.
06:48It works.
06:49Omar, if Crowder could have been on the field as a linebacker
06:53going up against a team that had Larry Borum
06:55and Greg Dulcich as the two tight ends, you'd still be in the league.
06:59Pro Bowler.
07:00You'd still be in the league.
07:02What?
07:03I could lock down Borum.
07:05It's so cold.
07:08Oh, but listen, you're right, too.
07:11The sixth offensive lineman thing.
07:12They're going to figure that out.
07:14They're going to know Fat Boy.
07:14Yeah, they will figure it out.
07:15They're going to start doubling people.
07:17Like that was the thing about Mike McDaniel's stuff.
07:19And Arande Gaston called it years ago.
07:21So if his stuff works, it works.
07:24If they got him, he can't turn a page over.
07:30There's no plan B is what we kept calling.
07:32It seemed like the sixth offensive lineman was a plan B,
07:36but the plan B didn't hit until three weeks ago.
07:38Hell, yeah, we're four years in.
07:40I was begging them the year three when they couldn't run the ball
07:43to go to a jumbo package.
07:45But, you know, that's besides the point.
07:49Right now they're problem solving.
07:50They don't have Darren Waller.
07:52They don't have Tyreek Hill.
07:54You really, I mean, who is your second best weapon?
07:56Malik Washington?
07:58Like, you know, Devon A. Chan is catching,
08:02probably going to catch more balls than any back in team history
08:05at this point.
08:07You know, you have two legit weapons on this team.
08:10Who in the NFL can you beat with two legit weapons?
08:15Obviously the Falcons.
08:16They just caught him sleeping on that sixth offensive lineman.
08:25Omar, before we let you go, I know you have a busy day ahead of you.
08:34The plan right now from the front office, they let go of Chris Greer.
08:37I don't think anybody's very surprised that that was the move.
08:41But I do think there's people who are surprised Mike McDaniel is sticking around here.
08:46The plan moving forward where we're reading reports that Mike McDaniel might still have
08:51a job next season, depending on how he does this year.
08:54What do you make of the whole thing?
08:55I mean, I see you laughing.
08:57What do you make of this entire situation?
08:59You keep Greer, but are you, you let go of Greer, but not McDaniel.
09:02Like, how is this going to work out?
09:02Let me, let me, let me, let me, let me counter your reports, which is, I mean, what else
09:07are they going to say to, let me counter your reports.
09:11Crowder, you remember when Joey stepped up in the, in the meeting room and basically
09:14it was like, uh, Cam Cameron, you don't know what you're doing.
09:18Yeah.
09:19Right next to him.
09:21I was grabbing, I was grabbing his, his pant leg, like a little kid trying to keep daddy
09:24home.
09:26Sit down.
09:28Man, you full of bleep.
09:29You don't know what the hell's going on.
09:31Yeah.
09:31Yeah.
09:32Listen, the minute the locker room is, you don't know what's going on.
09:37You can't fix it.
09:39And like, we are doomed and they start checking out.
09:43You're done.
09:44You're done as a head coach.
09:46Gase tried to change the entire locker room.
09:49Who was it?
09:50Was it Gase or Joe Philbin?
09:51Joe Philbin.
09:52I think Joe Philbin tried to change the entire locker room too.
09:55It doesn't matter when they check out, they check out and they not coming back.
09:58Like, there's nothing you could do as long as one or two players is there.
10:04They'll sit there in the meeting room and be like, this guy, this dude, they don't know
10:07what he's doing.
10:08Yeah.
10:08Yeah.
10:09So all these people were saying, Mike safe, Mike safe.
10:13Mike safe.
10:13If they start winning games, maybe.
10:16But, but think about it from Steve Ross's perspective.
10:18How can you sell this team to a fan base?
10:22If you bring Mike back, exactly.
10:24What do you say?
10:25What do you do?
10:26This fan base is they've done.
10:28They're like, no more this.
10:30I'm good.
10:31I'm tapping out.
10:32And I really don't know if you could do anything other than massive change up to get their interest
10:40again.
10:41And it's, it's, it's, it's going to be a tough uphill battle for this Dolphins organization.
10:45They took out the Papa shot.
10:48Yeah.
10:49They were interested in Papa shot.
10:51Now they're not thinking about Papa.
10:53They're getting ready for Buffalo.
10:54Omar.
10:55Right.
10:56Listen, it was taken over their mind.
10:58Listen, it's so funny because it's a Papa shot and a basketball rim.
11:03But they took out both of them.
11:05And those things must've taken so many shots.
11:09The Papa shot been broken like four times already.
11:12We are on week nine.
11:13The Papa shot has been broken like four times.
11:16We're in the locker room.
11:18There might be 300, 300, 400 shots taken, you know, from the Papa shot.
11:24You walk into the shower, Papa shot, Papa shot.
11:27You try, you try, you know, you know how it is, Crowder.
11:31It's, you know what?
11:33It's, it was a gathering thing.
11:35It was a meeting place.
11:36It was a bonding thing.
11:38I guess they figured week nine, we done bonded.
11:40We good.
11:40So, so the Papa shot was, uh, was a distraction.
11:47What's the care?
11:48Me and Salah talked about this earlier.
11:50You're talking about motivation or people checking out on McDaniel.
11:53What is the carrot that you're checking?
11:55What's the carrot that they're, I guess, what are they selling the players as that carrot
11:59that they're chasing?
11:59Uh, it's funny cause Bradley Chubb called, he's like, I might be delusional, but I still
12:05think we got a shot at winning the game.
12:07And I'll be like, okay, Bradley, you are indeed delusional.
12:11Um, people are playing for their futures, NFL futures for their future roles, for their
12:17future contracts, for their future employer, maybe for their future head coach.
12:20Um, this is, this is really about, you know, this is when you get the, the, the repeated
12:26to you, the eye in the sky.
12:28Don't lie.
12:29I got to put good stuff on film because that's going to be my resume.
12:32Like, you know, you cannot quit on a team.
12:35It makes it very hard on you when you do quit on a team and people are not going to want
12:40to employ you.
12:42Omar, do you eat nachos?
12:44No, I just, geez, why would I do that?
12:48I knew, I knew that because you don't eat sandwiches.
12:51Today's national nachos day.
12:52I figured nachos, there's just too much going on on a, on a plate for you.
12:56It's the cheese component.
12:58I'll eat the chips with some picadillo.
13:01I mean, I'll pick a deal.
13:02Salsa.
13:02Um, I forget what people.
13:05You eat guac?
13:07No.
13:07Like guac and chips?
13:08You don't eat guacamole?
13:09No.
13:10I will, I will eat it in a, in a, in a roll, but I'll be like, but I'll survive with it
13:18in a roll, but I'm, I'm not enjoying it.
13:21No, I know.
13:21I don't enjoy guac.
13:23Wow.
13:23Crazy.
13:24Y'all grown men don't eat.
13:26You don't eat like mozzarella sticks.
13:29Oh, I do eat mozzarella.
13:30If it's mozzarella, I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll give it a try.
13:32Oh, it's fried.
13:33He likes fried cheese.
13:33You like fried cheese.
13:35Pizza and mozzarella sticks is probably about the, the, the extent of my cheese experience.
13:40But, but I mean, if I eat cheese, you, whoever's around me going to pay the consequences.
13:44It's not just that I don't like it.
13:47You got that milk.
13:48Yeah.
13:49Cheese don't like me either.
13:50You, you, you, you, you've been vegan for a hot minute.
13:53You, you know, when you stop eating all that stuff.
13:55Oh man.
13:56This guy, any TikTok trend, Omar, this guy is taking down prebiotic, probiotic, kombucha.
14:04He spent $75 on some health vitamins downstairs.
14:08And meanwhile, he, he threw down 7,000 calories of sushi in between each of those kombuchas.
14:14Hey, oh, you're getting on your peptides and your collagen.
14:16You got to get your peptide collagen in you.
14:19You know what?
14:20The collagen, I do need to research it.
14:22Like, yeah.
14:24All the, all them old cougars, they, they real big on the collagen.
14:28You know what I'm saying?
14:28It keeps me young.
14:29Look at, he looks all sick and, and, and, and meagely.
14:32What do you guys know about that collagen?
14:34He's TikTok health guy, final boss.
14:38Omar Kelly, read his work.
14:40By the way, it looks like our show inspired a column tonight.
14:42That's pretty cool.
14:43Read it.
14:44Miamiherald.com.
14:45Omar, we love you, man.
14:46Thank you so much.
14:47I guess.
14:48All right.
14:49Omar Kelly, ladies and gentlemen.
14:50I knew, I knew Omar, the nachos question.
14:53I had it written down.
14:54I'm like, no way he eats nachos.
14:55I just knew it.
