00:00omar sends a text to solana during the commercial during the last segment actually
00:05that says hey when should i sign in and solana because we're in the middle of a segment uh
00:12kind of doesn't realize what he's texting back because he's half paying attention he texts back
00:18to omar i'll call what he meant to text was i'll text you when we go to break what he
00:26actually
00:27texted omar was i'll text you i'll text you when i go to bed so what did you think when
00:37you received
00:38that text from solana i read it like i'll call you when i go to break i didn't even pay
00:44i didn't even
00:45pay attention to it i knew what he meant breadcrumbs old breadcrumbs
01:02crazy all right let's uh we haven't talked to omar since the draft we talked to him before the
01:06draft he of course is a columnist for the miami herald you can read his work in the herald on
01:10the herald app you can go to miamiherald.com you can follow omar on social media as well so we
01:16haven't spoken to you since the dolphins draft how did they do in your estimation you've had some time
01:22to look over every pick and figure out what their strategy was what uh what are your thoughts
01:27um it was a bountiful draft i'll say that um obviously we know about the the passing on ruben
01:35bain um john eric sullivan had to have conviction about that because that that basically gives him
01:42strike one in the south florida community um and and you know let's hope that uh caden proctor
01:49is is a very good player uh he reminds me a lot of vernon carey i think crowder would know
01:55no in
01:55terms of just a massive human being uh hopefully he he's athletic enough to play guard because that's
02:02seemingly where they plan to play him as a rookie i'm sure the vision is to have him replace austin
02:07jackson eventually at right tackle um that it's a huge boomer bust selection but they did it following
02:16their planet earth theory which is there are only so many human beings that big that large at that
02:21atletic on the world in the world i get it um love their set love their second round pick i
02:28love the
02:28fact when you have conviction about a player who cares what everybody else thinks and that was their
02:33pretty much their entire draft um they drafted a lot of people earlier than a lot of people expected
02:39because they had a conviction about those players jacob rodriguez um you know the chris bell the
02:45injured wide receiver most teams when i talked to them they expected him to go early in in day uh
02:51in
02:51day three um dolphins took him before you know took him took him uh took him in the third round
02:58um caleb douglas uh they have so many people have so many different like that's the draft pick that has
03:05the most uh teeth in it in terms of people disputing it whether or not the dolphins took good value
03:13at
03:13that position uh but there was a long list of receivers that they picked him over so clearly
03:19they have a conviction about him bottom line is we'll figure out whether or not these guys are good
03:25talent evaluators or not quickly and oh we talked to um we listened to eric uh john eric sullivan
03:31yesterday he was on with joe the thought of and i don't know what's your thing because i i don't
03:36know where i'm at with it where i don't want to just draft the right tackle to your point about
03:40proctor he can play four positions yeah he said he was talking about how chris johnson can play in
03:45the slot and outside where we have so many spots to fill why not get multiple guys but are you
03:51sacrificing a guy that's really really good at one thing when you're trying to get guys that can play
03:56multiple positions you know that's a great question because if you were drafting a guard
04:02which is what proctor allegedly will be then you go with vega who the ravens probably jumped for joy
04:09when you didn't take him and and and took him um i last i checked the ravens were probably one
04:15of the
04:15better evaluating teams in the nfl so it's you know we'll we'll be able to stack up their careers
04:21proctor versus vega and see who who was who's the best um but i get the vision you need a
04:29future
04:29right tackle those tackles are making 100 million dollars can you imagine a world crowd where guards
04:35and tackles are making 100 million dollars come on now that that's i mean that's where they are
04:41right now so you so it's you addressed a premium position cornerback as well you he was the second
04:48cornerback drafted you took the guy you wanted and truthfully speaking he's probably the only one
04:54who could play nickel based on what they have on their roster so you i i nickel is a valuable
04:59position
05:00700 snaps a season nowadays uh and the receivers you know you added three i i you added three one
05:08is a
05:09very good slot in terms of coleman coleman kid kevin coleman um i think he's probably in my opinion
05:15going to be the guy that has the opportunity to contribute right away because he can easily take
05:20that starting slot spot because he's he's he's got that kind of ability he just has to master the
05:26playbook um the biggest criticisms i have about the draft is you waited too late to take an edge rusher
05:31who can set the edge it is what it is you you you knew when you you didn't take ruben
05:38bain and you
05:38didn't address it in day two you knew you made that sacrifice um also they i i would have if
05:46i were them
05:47i would have taken a quarterback i'm sorry two tight ends you you a little bit overkill develop a
05:52quarterback they claim they like the guys that they have cool let we shall see kate and proctor
06:00will forever be compared to caleb downs true or false omar no i i if i'm comparing him i'm comparing
06:09him to uh ruben bain and i'm because i would i would have done that trade down too and i'm
06:15i'm not a
06:16huge caleb downs fan if he's a pro bowl player the rest of his career great they they didn't clearly
06:22didn't want him jeff halfley coached at ohio state you don't think he has great contacts at ohio state
06:27that that that know all the nitty-gritty and the details he was the defensive coordinator
06:32he he knows the intel um and they chose and they didn't really address the position because i
06:39michael taff and kyle lewis who's going to be a hybrid nickel it's a small it's a safety and a
06:46nickel
06:47hybrid nickel and a nickel so they added two nickels and a small safety and you know i i right
06:56now i don't
06:57i'm gonna feel comfortable with the safety spot now when i if i see michael taff and the kid smart
07:02and instinctive like this then you know clearly i'll shut my mouth but i i don't i don't remember and
07:09and people will bring up like bobby mccain 190 pound safeties like
07:17overall though if you can come out of a draft with 13 picks and your only real criticism is hey
07:25they took
07:25two tight ends maybe they should have taken a quarterback in there somewhere that's a pretty good draft
07:29then no uh yeah i mean you you can say maybe they should have taken some other receivers i mean
07:36we'll
07:36stack up these three receivers with everybody that they everybody that they passed over which is fine
07:41and maybe chris bell is the best receiver in the entire class he was going to be a first round
07:46pick
07:46before he got injured so you know hopefully he he spends half the year rehabbing because he'll be nine
07:53months into an acl repair um you know people tell you when they tell you the truth they'll tell you
07:59it usually takes a full year for me to feel like myself not not just be out there but feel
08:06like
08:06myself and to trust the knee so i definitely don't want to rush him on the field but you know
08:12you we we can second guess any draft absolutely any draft if they walk away from this with five
08:18starters and five really good players five players where you're going to extend them and they're going
08:23to have productive careers like robert hunt did or like christian wilkins did or like javon holland did
08:29or like jalen phillips did those are all guys who left here and got big money contracts elsewhere
08:35andrew van gingkel if if the dolphins end up with any of those caliber players just five of them five
08:42starters it's a good draft and speaking of the ruben bain situation and this i i might be on a
08:48island i don't know the hometown guy does does that mean anything i'm i love ruben bain i'm a bucks
08:54fan
08:55i'm buying a ruben bain jersey but the people that are upset if you don't draft a cane who's the
09:00best
09:00cane ever to play for the dolphins might be vernon carey like there's 200 schools that's the guy that
09:06that's your team olivier vernon's probably the best player that that ever played for the dolphins
09:12of first best cane um here's the thing and this is why i i think frank gore played here for
09:19uh oh
09:19that's true frank gore are we saying a cup of coffee that wasn't the same friend frank though
09:24is it best cane ever to have suited up for the dolphins or is it best dolphins career
09:32best dolphins career coming out of university of miami oh
09:39because that that depends on how you set the argument because i could argue right now it's a
09:44good uh because they're both probably hall of famers calais campbell didn't bernie kosar uh play
09:52quarterback like didn't he back up for like a half a season once with the uh that's true absolutely
09:56that's true duke johnson played at the for the dolphins too right didn't duke johnson duke johnson
10:02yeah duke johnson and and lamar miller lamar miller was a thousand yard rusher for the
10:06lamar miller that's right lamar miller but but the issue with reuben bain is you knew he could have
10:12been a culture player for you and he was one of the few defensive ends that could set the edge
10:18and you know how now and crowded i'm gonna make um white boy god dog why'd i forget his name
10:26you
10:26played with him from iowa matt roth he had short arms too yeah yeah he could set an edge though
10:34oh he
10:34can set an edge now he didn't know the playbook he didn't know how to add two plus two but
10:38he'll
10:39set an edge we couldn't set the table he had short arms you see as and that's my thing with
10:45with the
10:45reuben bain you you knew he was going to be a culture guy you knew south florida streets weren't
10:51going to take him up because and you knew he was going to set the edge like you passed up
10:56on that
10:56for potential left tackle and uh one of the biggest boomer bus draft picks in the draft cool if it
11:03works
11:03out for you but you know if it doesn't we're always going to be stacking up his career versus reuben
11:09and
11:09and even for me vega okay if you want if you want i think vega is going to be a
11:15pro bowl player
11:15that you know you you should have known that coming into this process i'm searching best
11:23hurricanes to ever play for the miami dolphins but again it's hard until you figure out what
11:29the parameters are because they've got like number one vernon carey and number two lamar miller
11:37daniel stubs
11:41it's we gotta he played for the canes when i heard it's the the contingency has to be what
11:47hurricane contributed the most to the universe to the dolphins dolphins yeah that i think that
11:53that's fair because you can't just say the best hurricane because then you're throwing in guys who
11:58came here for a cup of coffee it's frank or i think with it if you do it just that
12:01way it's got
12:02to be frank or no i i would say it's going to be calais campbell because frank or is not
12:06a first
12:06ballot hall of famer i think clays campbell will be i mean class is probably still playing to play
12:10like his 20th season a class might like retire uh at at 50 announced today right he announced today
12:18he's back for his 19th season did he announce today yeah yeah he's going back to baltimore
12:25finally finally signed him like i don't know what you're doing class like you just go i i knew he
12:31should have signed with baltimore last year i'm like why are you going to arizona waste the season
12:35like 19 seasons and productive we were talking about it at the beginning of the show productive
12:44he's he's he's got to be a hall of famer and i i i would it's it's odd when you
12:51have a guy inside
12:52the locker room who's smarter than the coaches in the front office executives it was like mind numbing
12:59like he's coaching the coaches which is probably why he wanted out of here after one season
13:05oh you were talking you about my class i thought you're talking about me
13:12matt roth was smarter than the front office he was smarter than you who was smarter than the front
13:16office like if if glaz wasn't here that season they wouldn't have held it together and it's like
13:22and that's why they wouldn't trade him like because he was holding the season together
13:27from a leadership standpoint like that guy when he retires i'm giving him a gm job
13:32like he knows more football than anybody i know in this world no somebody points out on the chat
13:39twan russell how we forget twan russell there's a hurricane dolphin come on no disrespect don't
13:45disrespect twan russell on this show all right omar kelly read his work in the miami herald follow
13:50him on social media as well thank you all all right guys
