00:35Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:37We begin this morning with the Trump administration's new announcement on autism,
00:40focused on Tylenol and a potential new treatment.
00:44In an Oval Office address on Monday, President Trump said that pregnant women should avoid Tylenol,
00:49known generally as acetaminophen, warning it could increase the risk of autism.
00:54He also urged parents not to give it to babies.
00:58I want to say it like it is, don't take Tylenol.
01:01Don't take it.
01:03If you just can't, I mean, it's a fight like hell not to take it.
01:08There may be a point where you have to and that you'll, you have to work out with yourself.
01:13So don't take Tylenol.
01:15First, effective immediately, the FDA will be notifying physicians that the use of acetaminophen,
01:22well, let's see how we say that, acetaminophen, acetaminophen, is that okay?
01:32Which is basically commonly known as Tylenol during pregnancy can be associated with a very increased risk of autism.
01:45Trump framed the announcement as part of his Make America Healthy Again agenda,
01:50joined by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Marty Makari.
01:55But medical experts say the link to Tylenol is not proven.
01:59They point out the claims rely on older studies that many scientists have rejected.
02:04You know, we're all trying to understand autism.
02:08We're trying to find the causes.
02:10We're trying to find treatments.
02:12And to have, you know, these kinds of statements be infused into the conversation is, is unhelpful.
02:23And it just provokes anxiety.
02:25And I think it's going to steer people who are, you know, pregnant to do things maybe against the advice of their physicians.
02:35Tylenol's manufacturer says it strongly disagrees with the administration's claims.
02:40At the same time, Trump announced the FDA will move to approve a chemotherapy drug called Leucovorin
02:47as a potential treatment to help some children with autism.
02:50Early studies have shown some promise, but experts say the evidence for that is still limited.
02:56A major Supreme Court ruling to tell you about this morning,
02:59one that could rewrite the balance of power in Washington.
03:02In a divided order, the justices cleared the way for President Trump to remove Rebecca Kelly Slaughter,
03:08a Democratic commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission.
03:11The move revives a 90-year-old fight over presidential power.
03:15Since 1935, courts have said presidents cannot fire independent agency heads without cause.
03:22Now the High Court will hear arguments in December on whether to strike that precedent down.
03:27Justice Elena Kagan, in a fiery dissent, warned the ruling gives presidents, quote,
03:33full control of all those agencies, letting them remove, quote,
03:37any member he wishes for any reason or no reason at all.
03:42The decision builds on earlier cases where the court let Trump fire other Democratic commissioners,
03:48and it could soon affect the Federal Reserve, where a challenge is still pending.
03:52The case will be back before the justices in December.
03:55World leaders are gathering in New York this week for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
04:01And President Trump will deliver the first address of his second term later this morning.
04:06But he arrives more isolated than ever.
04:09Trump has slashed U.S. funding for U.N. programs, owes billions and back dues,
04:14and pulled support for humanitarian agencies even as the global crises grow.
04:19Meanwhile, several close U.S. allies, including France, Britain, Canada, and Australia,
04:24are formally recognizing a Palestinian state.
04:27They will use a high-level conference in New York to push a two-state solution amid the war and starvation in Gaza.
04:34Israel is warning of retaliation, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is vowing a Palestinian state, quote,
04:40will not be established west of the Jordan.
04:43Trump is set to meet with Netanyahu, Ukraine's President Zelensky, and Syria's new leader during the week.
04:49Tonight, Jimmy Kimmel Live! returns to late night.
04:53His suspension is over after a week that ignited a firestorm over censorship and free speech.
04:59ABC benched Kimmel last Wednesday after he blasted MAGA supporters,
05:04accusing them of trying to distance themselves from Charlie Kirk's alleged killer.
05:09The comments sparked backlash.
05:11Major broadcast giant Sinclair and Nexstar said their affiliates would stop airing his show.
05:16ABC followed, prompting outrage and warning of government pressure on free speech.
05:21Disney released a statement Monday saying, quote,
05:24It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.
05:30We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy,
05:33and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.
05:38CNN reports Kimmel is expected to address the controversy in his monologue tonight,
05:43but not everyone will see it.
05:45Sinclair says its affiliates will still keep the show off the air.
05:49That includes the affiliate in Washington, D.C.
05:52In her first news interview since leaving office,
05:56former Vice President Kamala Harris sounding off on President Trump's second term.
06:01Speaking with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow about her new book, 107 Days,
06:06Harris blasted business leaders, she says, have failed to stand up to Trump after writing that she predicted how he would act if he won again.
06:14And I always believed that if push came to shove, those titans of industry would be guardrails for our democracy,
06:27for the importance of sustaining democratic institutions.
06:33And one by one by one, they have been silent.
06:40They have been, you know, yes, I use the word feckless.
06:45Democracy sustains capitalism.
06:49Capitalism thrives in a democracy.
06:52And right now we are dealing with, as I called him at my speech on the Ellipse, a tyrant.
07:00We used to compare the strength of our democracy to communist dictators.
07:06That's what we're dealing with right now in Donald Trump.
07:08And these titans of industry are not speaking up.
07:14Harris said she understands why some business leaders are bending to Trump,
07:18but insisted they have to, quote, stand up for the people who rely on them.
07:22She also pointed to the return of Jimmy Kimmel's show as proof of what she called the power of organized resistance.
07:29Finally this morning, fall is here, the air is cooler, the pumpkin spice is flowing, and it's time for Fat Bear Week.
07:37Every year, Alaska's Katmai National Park holds the wildly popular contest to crown the chunkiest champion as the bears bulk up for hibernation.
07:46Already, you say, yep.
07:48Voting opens today with 11 bears in the bracket, including last week's cub winner, Junior 128, now moving up to the big leagues.
07:56But Junior faces tough competition, including his own mother, Grazer, the two-time defending champ.
08:02You can watch the action and cast your vote right now on explore.org.
08:06Isn't that kind of neat, though? Bears eat, then they fall asleep for the winter, wake up and it's spring.
08:12Would you like that? I would to some degree, but you know what? I don't want to miss Christmas. How about that?
08:18All right, there's plenty on the calendar today. Here's what we're tracking.
08:21President Trump takes the world stage at the United Nations just before 10 this morning.
08:26Later this morning, Arizona voters get ready for a special election to replace the late Congressman Raul Grijalva.
08:32His daughter is running against her Republican challenger to fill the seat.
08:36At 11, a Missouri woman tied to a fraud scheme involving Elvis Presley's Graceland heads to sentencing.
08:43At 1230, in Providence, Rhode Island, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell will lay out the economic outlook after last week's interest rate cut.
