00:36Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:38We begin this morning in Pennsylvania, where three police officers are dead, two others wounded,
00:43after a deadly shootout in rural York County near Harrisburg.
00:46Authorities say the suspect was also killed, shot by police, as officers tried to serve a warrant Wednesday afternoon.
00:53State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Parris says they were following up on a domestic violence investigation that began a day earlier.
01:01The two surviving officers were listed in critical but stable condition.
01:05Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called for action to address the root causes of these kinds of tragedies.
01:11This kind of violence isn't okay.
01:16We need to do better as a society.
01:20We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun, picking up a weapon is the answer to resolving disputes.
01:29We need to do better when it comes to mental health.
01:31We need to do better when it comes to looking out for those who are in need, so we don't have to deal with tragedies like this.
01:40We've got to do better as a society.
01:42Shapiro said U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi personally called him after the shooting.
01:47Both the FBI and the ATF are now on the ground to support the investigation.
01:52Last night, look, law enforcement and emergency vehicles drove through the streets, lined with community members honoring the fallen officers.
01:59We are learning new details about the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk,
02:06including the unusual terms he demanded before surrendering to police in Utah.
02:1122-year-old Tyler Robinson agreed to turn himself in, but only if the arrest was peaceful.
02:18Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby says he got a call from a retired detective Thursday, the night after the shooting,
02:24saying Robinson was ready to surrender, but he feared being killed by a SWAT team.
02:30He knew he was going to get caught.
02:32He didn't want a big SWAT team hitting his parents' house or his apartment.
02:35He was truly fearful of being shot by law enforcement, so that the conditions were as relaxed and comfortable and almost to the point of, you know, inviting.
02:45The sheriff says late Thursday night, Robinson was driven to the station by his parents and the retired detective,
02:51who knew the family through a religious group.
02:54Detectives in plainclothes met him outside and escorted him into a secure interview room
02:59to await the arrival of state and federal agents early Friday morning.
03:04The sheriff credits his former colleague for defusing a potentially dangerous situation through community ties and trust.
03:11Robinson is charged with aggravated murder, obstruction, witness tampering, and committing a vile defense in front of a child.
03:18And this is making the rounds big time this morning.
03:22ABC has pulled the plug on Jimmy Kimmel, taking his late night show off the air indefinitely over comments he made about the murder of Charlie Kirk,
03:31which sparked furious backlash.
03:34It started Monday when Kimmel accused, quote,
03:36The MAGA gang of trying to score political points off Kirk's assassination and implied the shooter was one of them.
03:44The comments triggered outrage on the right and action.
03:48FCC chair Brendan Carr threatened regulatory pushback against ABC, calling Kimmel's remarks part of a, quote,
03:55Concerted Lie.
03:56Then, Nexstar, one of the largest owners of ABC affiliates, announced it would preempt the Jimmy Kimmel show starting that night.
04:04Disney followed suit, yanking Kimmel's show off the air for the foreseeable future.
04:10Kimmel was spotted leaving his theater Wednesday with his head down, wearing a black hat and plaid shirt.
04:15As protesters gathered outside, including one woman in a Statue of Liberty crown holding a broken heart sign right there.
04:24Meanwhile, from Windsor Castle, President Trump celebrated the news on Truth Social, posting great news for America.
04:31Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done.
04:36Democrats slammed the move as censorship.
04:39Minority leader Chuck Schumer told CNN, quote,
04:42Trump and his allies seem to want to shut down a speech that they don't like to hear.
04:47That is not what democracies do.
04:49That is what autocracies do.
04:51But conservatives call it accountability.
04:53So far, no comment from Kimmel and no word on what will replace him in that time slot.
04:59Mahmoud Khalil, the former Columbia University grad student who became a lightning rod over pro-Palestinian protests on campus,
05:07is now one step closer to being deported.
05:09A U.S. immigration judge ordered Khalil removed to either Algeria or his native Syria,
05:15ruling he omitted information on his green card application.
05:19The judge found Khalil failed to disclose an internship with the U.N. Relief and Works Agency
05:25and didn't mention his role in Apartheid Divest, an anti-Israel group at Columbia.
05:32Immigration officials arrested Khalil in March at his apartment in Manhattan.
05:36While he has legal permanent residency, the government argues his omissions raise national security and foreign policy concerns.
05:44A federal judge previously ruled Khalil wasn't a flight risk or a danger to the public
05:49and released him from detention in June.
05:52His lawyers say they plan to fight the ruling at the Board of Immigration Appeals.
05:56The FBI director was in the hot seat on Capitol Hill again on Wednesday,
06:02pressed by lawmakers about his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and his loyalty to President Trump.
06:08Kash Patel faced five hours of bruising testimony before the House Judiciary Committee,
06:13a day after fiery clashes in the Senate.
06:16Much of the hearing centered on Epstein and whether the FBI is withholding documents to protect powerful people,
06:22including President Trump.
06:23The important position of the FBI requires a leader who puts public safety and national security
06:32and the rule of law first.
06:34I'm afraid, Director Patel, you've given us reason to believe you've used the powers of the FBI
06:38to serve Donald Trump and his agenda of partisan retribution.
06:44You've broken your promise not to do that.
06:46You've betrayed Jeffrey Epstein's victims and survivors.
06:49You've turned your back on the career law enforcement officers, the FBI.
06:53And as a result, you've left us, you've left all of us less, less safe than before.
06:59The questioning intensified over a 2003 birthday message allegedly written by Trump to Epstein.
07:06The White House says it's a fake.
07:08But Democrats press Patel over whether he told Attorney General Pam Bondi
07:13the president's name appears in the Epstein files.
07:16Watch.
07:16Remembering your oath to tell the truth, did you ever tell Donald Trump his name is in the files?
07:23I have never spoken to President Trump about the Epstein files.
07:27Did you ever tell the Attorney General that Donald Trump's name is in the Epstein files?
07:32The Attorney General and I have had numerous discussions about the entirety of the Epstein files
07:36and the reviews conducted by our team.
07:38Did you tell the Attorney General that Donald Trump's name is in the Epstein files?
07:40And we have released where President Trump's name is in the Epstein files.
07:43The simple question, did you tell the Attorney General that the president's name is in the Epstein files?
07:47During many conversations that the Attorney General and I have had on the matter of Epstein,
07:52we have reviewed.
07:53The question is simple.
07:54Did you tell the Attorney General that Donald Trump's name is in the Epstein files?
07:58The question has been asked and answered.
08:00You have not answered it.
08:01And we will take your evasiveness as a consciousness of guilt.
08:04Patel pushed back, saying the FBI has released all credible material and insisted the remaining
08:10files are sealed by a court order.
08:13At one point, he agreed to investigate Epstein's estate over what Trump claims is a forged letter.
08:19First it was the woolly mammoth, then the dire wolf, and now the dodo.
08:24Scientists say they're one big step closer to bringing the iconic flightless bird back from
08:30extinction.
08:30The biotech company, Colossal Biosciences, announced a breakthrough on Wednesday.
08:36For the first time ever, scientists successfully grew primordial germ cells from pigeons, a
08:42key building block on the road to resurrecting the dodo bird, which was actually a type of
08:48oversized pigeon.
08:50The company has also created gene-edited chickens to act as future surrogate mothers for the dodo,
08:56proving once again that science is wild.
08:59But don't expect to spot one at a zoo just yet.
09:02Scientists say it could take five to seven years before a newly hatched dodo walks the
09:07earth for the first time in over three centuries.
09:10How about that?
09:12Did you know that when I was a kid, like if you were called a dodo bird, that was an insult.
09:16It really was.
09:17It was like you were forgetful.
09:19And they'd say, you dodo bird.
09:20You were like forgetful or even, you know, a bit dumb.
09:24Now, these days, if you called somebody a dodo bird, that insult would be like rated G.
09:29I mean, all you have to do is turn on cable TV and you see that they call each other far
09:33worse.
09:34Anyways, that's a walk back in time, if you will.
09:37All right.
09:37Before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
09:39This morning, D.C.
09:40Mayor Muriel Bowser testifies to Congress for the first time since President Trump's crackdown
09:45on crime in the nation's capital began.
09:48Also at 10, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s new handpicked vaccine panel meets in Atlanta to weigh changes
09:54to immunization guidelines for children.
09:58At noon, Freddie Mac releases new data on mortgage rates as housing affordability continues to be
10:03a key issue.
10:05And tonight, a candlelight vigil in Colorado hosted by Turning Point USA on what was supposed
10:10to be the next stop on Charlie Kirk's tour.
