00:01:39Welcome to the 2025 Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards red carpet pre-show.
00:01:46I'm your host Nandi Howard and I can't wait to catch up with all the special guests as
00:01:51they make their way in sky.
00:01:53Now, speaking of special guests, I have one with me right now.
00:01:58You may have seen him on shows like Access Hollywood or World of Death from my personal
00:02:03favorite house guests.
00:02:05But today he is here to have some fun as our official red carpet co-host, Mr. Scott Evans.
00:02:10So glad to have you.
00:02:11Nandi, you better get out of here.
00:02:13No, I had to give you your props.
00:02:15Listen, I will be honest with you.
00:02:16It is such a pleasure and honor really to be here as a co-host for the 18th annual Essence
00:02:22Black Women in Hollywood Awards red carpet pre-show.
00:02:24I'm going to tell you, we about to cut up.
00:02:25No, we are.
00:02:26And you look fantastic.
00:02:28So do you.
00:02:29Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:02:30Get into it.
00:02:31And this year we're honoring four extremely talented black women who are changing Hollywood
00:02:35for the better through their work in film and television.
00:02:38It's true, it's true.
00:02:39Since you mentioned this year's honorees, why don't we remind everybody of exactly who
00:02:43that is.
00:02:44Now, absolutely.
00:02:45We have Ramla Mohammed who will be receiving the Visionary Award by Smartwater.
00:02:49Yes.
00:02:50Okay, so we also have Tiana Taylor who will be receiving the Fierce and Fearless Award.
00:02:54And you know that body will be snatched today.
00:02:56You already know.
00:02:57When is it not?
00:02:58When is it not?
00:02:59Never.
00:02:59You know what I mean?
00:03:00We also have Cynthia Erivo.
00:03:02She's receiving the Cultural Icon Award.
00:03:05And of course, we have living legend Marla Gibbs who will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement
00:03:10Award.
00:03:10Listen, if you can't be at the brunch, where are you?
00:03:16Where can you go?
00:03:17Quite the lineup.
00:03:19This year's awards will be hosted by actor Aldis Hodge who is currently on Prime Video's
00:03:24award-winning show, Alex Cross.
00:03:27If you're not watching, you better get to it.
00:03:28You're watching.
00:03:28We'll also have a musical performance from singer-songwriter Kirby and a special moment
00:03:33to honor those impacted by the LA wildfires.
00:03:36Yes.
00:03:36Plus, I've only got one photo in my hands.
00:03:39Let me get the smiles.
00:03:39And it's a photo of Tyra Banks.
00:03:42Give me a second.
00:03:43You know, head up.
00:03:45There it is.
00:03:45Head up.
00:03:46Receiving the first ever Essence Luminary Spotlight recognition.
00:03:50In other words, like he said, get ready for an unforgettable show full of moments you definitely
00:03:55don't want to miss.
00:03:56One of the things that I love about Black Women in Hollywood event is that every year,
00:04:00the team finds ways to make it even bigger and better than before.
00:04:03So this year, we added a brand new award category.
00:04:06And since 2007, these awards have been a space to honor the powerhouse women shaping our screens
00:04:12and empowering our culture.
00:04:14It's all about Black women being inspired, getting an opportunity to take a break from
00:04:19their busy schedules and really just pour into each other.
00:04:21That's what this event is about.
00:04:22It feels like fellowship.
00:04:23No, it's a family reunion.
00:04:24You know?
00:04:25And so in honor of that, Essence and our partners at Diet Coke wanted to give our viewers,
00:04:29our Essie readers, a chance to join that celebration.
00:04:31So, earlier this month, Essence passed the virtual mic to you to cast the votes for the
00:04:38first ever Essie's Choice Awards presented by Diet Coke.
00:04:41And right now, I'm going to toss it over to our girl, the fabulous Kami Crawford, to tell
00:04:46us a little bit more about all of that.
00:04:49Thanks, Scott.
00:04:50What's going on, everybody?
00:04:51I'm Kami Crawford checking in with Diet Coke from the red carpet.
00:04:55The Essie's Choice Award is all about celebrating women who share a unique connection with Essence readers.
00:05:00From our TV screens to their social media feeds, the way these ladies represent today's Black
00:05:06woman has captivated the Essence audience like no other.
00:05:09This year's nominees included Dominique Fishback, Emma Yatzee Coronaldi, and the cast of Tyler
00:05:16Perry's Sisters.
00:05:17So make sure you stay tuned to find out who wins.
00:05:25Okay, so another thing we look forward to every year are the looks that hit this carpet.
00:05:30I mean, every look.
00:05:32Dress down.
00:05:33Should we, I mean, need we say more?
00:05:35I don't think so.
00:05:36Right now, I'm going to toss it over to our Smartwater style correspondent, Amanda Booze.
00:05:40Hey, Amanda.
00:05:41Hey, Amanda.
00:05:42Hey, Scott.
00:05:43Hey, everybody.
00:05:44It's Amanda Booze here with Smartwater.
00:05:46I'll be checking in with a few of your faves to learn more about their personal style journeys
00:05:50and how they use simple fashion choices to create their show-stopping red carpet looks.
00:05:55You know everybody's going to bring the fashion today because we all know nothing boosts our
00:05:58confidence like finding a look that really allows you to show off your personal style
00:06:02aesthetic.
00:06:03So make sure you stay tuned right here.
00:06:05Our guests are going to break down all the styling tips behind their looks.
00:06:08Nandi and Scott, what do you guys got going on over there?
00:06:11We are with the incomparable, the beautiful, the talented Taraji P. Henson.
00:06:18You look fantastic.
00:06:19When you hit the carpet today, what was your inspiration?
00:06:22How did you want to feel today?
00:06:22Well, comfort is always a number one for me.
00:06:25Absolutely.
00:06:25I know.
00:06:25That's right.
00:06:26I also wanted to feel like I was going to like a high tea with my sisters.
00:06:29Yeah, yeah.
00:06:30Yeah.
00:06:30You there.
00:06:32Taraji, you've been in this room multiple times, so you know what it feels like.
00:06:36But every year, whenever you do decide to come back, how do you just feel seeing your friends,
00:06:41seeing your colleagues, seeing the industry?
00:06:44It's just such an inspiration.
00:06:45Yeah.
00:06:46That's how I get my, that's how I get inspired.
00:06:48Yeah.
00:06:49By watching, you know, Issa Rae is here.
00:06:51I mean, the list goes on and on, and it just makes me feel good, and it just, it's a
00:06:59reminder
00:06:59to keep going.
00:07:00Yeah.
00:07:00Because just as they're inspiring me, I know I'm inspiring somebody, and that's how we pass
00:07:04it.
00:07:04Absolutely.
00:07:05You know, that's how we pass it around.
00:07:06Literally inspire me right now.
00:07:07I'm re-listening to your book, and the messages, the themes, the modes of operation, the inspiration
00:07:15that is baked into every single page.
00:07:17Is there another book?
00:07:18Yeah.
00:07:19I just feel like it's in you.
00:07:19What's coming up?
00:07:20I feel like we're ready.
00:07:21We'll probably get another little TJ book before you get another book of mine.
00:07:25I feel like I have more life to live.
00:07:27Yeah.
00:07:27Yeah.
00:07:28You know, because I like to keep it real, and I don't want to waste people's time.
00:07:30You know, I have to have something to say, and I don't think I'm just quite there yet.
00:07:34Yeah.
00:07:35No.
00:07:35No, I was on Twitter, and they say your body line.
00:07:38Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:07:39They say it's the TPH.
00:07:40It's serious.
00:07:41So how important for you is it to branch out, you know, be an entrepreneur, do other things
00:07:46than acting?
00:07:47Well, for me, it's never really about a money grab.
00:07:50Yes, we all want to put money in our pockets, but for me, it's about, you know, I'm a huge
00:07:54guru about taking care of your mental and, you know, teaching us that taking care of
00:08:01ourself is not a chore.
00:08:02Yeah.
00:08:03You know, it should be luxurious.
00:08:04It should be like a spa day, and that's what motivated me to make, to branch off and do
00:08:09the body care line.
00:08:10Because I was like, if you're going to start with your scalp, you might as well work on
00:08:13down.
00:08:13Work on down.
00:08:14Yeah.
00:08:15Yeah.
00:08:15Well, the girlies are saying it's the hottest thing on the market, so I need to go order
00:08:18me some.
00:08:18Get you some.
00:08:19Yes.
00:08:19And get into it.
00:08:20Listen, we're not going to hold you on this carpet any much longer, but it's so good to
00:08:23see you.
00:08:24Good to see you both.
00:08:25It's fantastic, truly.
00:08:26I mean, head to toe.
00:08:28Head to toe.
00:08:28Have a great time in there.
00:08:29Thank you so much.
00:08:38We're always going to go the extra mile for our kids.
00:08:41The work we do here is bigger than me.
00:08:46Confidence and ambition are great attributes, especially when paired with respect and humility.
00:08:55We're not giving up until we fix this.
00:08:57I promise.
00:08:59Let's talk to the freaking world.
00:09:06Hey, everybody.
00:09:06I think it's time to check back in with our girl, Cammie Crawford, and hear a little bit
00:09:11more about this year's Essie's Choice Award, presented by Diet Coke.
00:09:15Now, like I mentioned earlier, it's our first year doing this, Scott.
00:09:18Yeah, yeah.
00:09:18So it's such a refreshing way to connect with our audience, our Essies, and give them
00:09:23a chance to celebrate one of their faves.
00:09:25Hey, Cammie.
00:09:26Let us know what's going on.
00:09:27Hey, guys.
00:09:28I'm still here with Diet Coke on the red carpet, and we are counting down to the announcement
00:09:32of this year's Essie's Choice Award winner.
00:09:35You know, it's so important that we take a break and refresh with a little me time every
00:09:39once in a while, because let's face it, black women deserve rest, too.
00:09:42And celebrating our wins like all of our honorees today is definitely a way to do that.
00:09:46This Essie's Choice Award is all about you, because let's be real, who better to help
00:09:51us pick a winner than the fans who support these women every step of the way?
00:09:55And this group of nominees includes some of today's most talented black women in Hollywood
00:10:00who are really breaking the mold and setting the stage for what's now and what's next.
00:10:06But what's next right now are a few very special guests stopping by to chat with Nandi and Scott.
00:10:13All right, Scott.
00:10:14We have black love in the building.
00:10:16In the building.
00:10:17Yes, yes, yes.
00:10:18Oh, our presenter.
00:10:19How are you feeling tonight?
00:10:20I am doing great.
00:10:21I am presenting the Tiana Taylor with Fierce and Fabulous Award.
00:10:26Right.
00:10:27And I couldn't think of anyone more deserving.
00:10:30Yeah.
00:10:31I felt lucky when they asked me to present.
00:10:33Right.
00:10:34Mm-hmm.
00:10:34Tell us why.
00:10:36Yeah, tell us why.
00:10:36Well, because Tiana said if anybody was going to do it, you were my first choice.
00:10:42Wow.
00:10:43And I said, well, then we got to make it happen.
00:10:46Right.
00:10:46Yeah.
00:10:46And we're both actually filming a TV show with Ryan Murphy right now.
00:10:52So I called Babe and I'm like, you think they're going to let us over one?
00:10:56Like, I was so nervous, like, because we're, like, really in crunch time to film.
00:11:01But it just worked out where we both could be off today.
00:11:05It's incredible to see you, too.
00:11:06So, Nisi, I'm sure this room is filled with so many peers, coworkers, people you've, you
00:11:11know, known in the industry.
00:11:12Memories, yeah.
00:11:12How does it just feel to see everyone and just the fellowship?
00:11:16Special.
00:11:17Yeah, yeah.
00:11:17And necessary, especially at a time like this.
00:11:20Right, right.
00:11:20When so many things are divisive in the world.
00:11:23Yeah.
00:11:23To be able to come together and love on each other and support each other and, you know,
00:11:28cheer each other on.
00:11:29Yeah.
00:11:30I can't think of a better place to be.
00:11:32Makes the birthday a little more sweeter, huh?
00:11:33Come on now.
00:11:34Come on.
00:11:34Still celebrating.
00:11:35I know, that's right.
00:11:36Still celebrating.
00:11:37I ain't mad at you.
00:11:38You got to.
00:11:39Well, we won't take you all too long.
00:11:41I know you have to get in there and get ready for YouTube events.
00:11:43So thank you so much for watching us.
00:11:45Y'all better get into these looks.
00:11:46Yes.
00:11:46I'm just going to let you know right now.
00:11:54Okay, y'all.
00:11:55I heard Mayel's Kalahari Melon and Aloe Vera line is changing the game.
00:11:59Up to five days of moisture and no wash days in between?
00:12:02Let's see about that.
00:12:04Day two, headed to work, but I feel like I'm about to drop a hit single.
00:12:08All the cuties are at the run club.
00:12:10Good thing these curls are curling.
00:12:12Can you believe this is day five?
00:12:14I think I could go even longer.
00:12:16Up to five days of lasting moisture.
00:12:19Endless possibilities.
00:12:20Imagine what you could do in five days.
00:12:34I think our host is here.
00:12:36The host is I might be.
00:12:37I might be.
00:12:38Look out.
00:12:39It's Hodge.
00:12:39How are you doing today?
00:12:40I'm doing fantastic.
00:12:41I'm excellent.
00:12:42And what about y'all?
00:12:43We're doing well.
00:12:43Better now?
00:12:44You look fantastic.
00:12:45What is the color of this suit?
00:12:46What are we going to call it?
00:12:47You know, we're just going to call it a smooth simoninenin.
00:12:52Simoninenin.
00:12:53Simoninenin.
00:12:53Brother Spice is right.
00:12:55Yes.
00:12:56Listen, we are here to celebrate black women in Hollywood with Essence.
00:12:59Look, what does it feel like to you to be here and support this way?
00:13:03Yes.
00:13:04It feels amazing.
00:13:04I mean, I've got my mom and my sister here.
00:13:08I love that.
00:13:11I'm a black woman.
00:13:11I've seen all her struggles, everything she's gone through, and everything that I stand on
00:13:14is because of her.
00:13:16Yeah.
00:13:16So for me, it's a great honor.
00:13:18It's a great privilege.
00:13:19And I hope for my mother, it's a reflection of everything that she's gone through, the hard
00:13:24times.
00:13:24It's all been worth it.
00:13:25Yes.
00:13:26And how does it feel just to host?
00:13:27You're going to be in front of a crowd of beautiful black women.
00:13:30Like, just how do you feel right now?
00:13:32I feel good.
00:13:33I was a little nervous, still a little bit, because, you know, this room is serious, okay?
00:13:37We've got a lot of legends in the room.
00:13:39We've got a lot of power up in there, and I want to represent right, but you know we're
00:13:42up in there with family, so they're going to be honest.
00:13:44They're going to tell you the truth.
00:13:45No, they're going to tell you the truth.
00:13:46Family don't lie.
00:13:47Immediately.
00:13:48Immediately.
00:13:49But listen, you've got to be riding on a high.
00:13:51I mean, already, the show on Prime Video, Alex Cross, people are loving it.
00:13:56Yeah.
00:13:56I mean, it's almost like a, dare I say, a phenomenon, but it's not really, it's not
00:14:01like anybody guessed it.
00:14:03You know what I mean?
00:14:03We all knew what time it was.
00:14:05Look, man, we were actually pleasantly surprised and all very humbled with the response.
00:14:10I mean, I think in 20 days, we had over 40 million views, and that's actually rare
00:14:17air these days.
00:14:18You said 40 million?
00:14:1940, over 40 million.
00:14:21Yeah, it's a little bit past that 40, a little bit of a lot of bits.
00:14:26So honestly, it's amazing.
00:14:28It's a testament to the hard work that was put down by our entire cast, crew, writers,
00:14:32producers, and really, the leadership of Ben Watkins, our creator, amazing.
00:14:37If you had one word, one word for your intention for today, what would it be?
00:14:42Acknowledgement.
00:14:43Yes.
00:14:43Damn.
00:14:44You heard it right there.
00:14:45I want everybody to feel seen.
00:14:46Host.
00:14:46Yeah.
00:14:47Out is hot.
00:14:47Out is hot.
00:14:48Thank you so much.
00:14:48But now I've got to go do my job before they fire me.
00:14:51We would never do that.
00:14:51We would never do that.
00:14:52You know what I got to get on?
00:14:53Just go up there and look good, okay?
00:14:55You know what I'm saying?
00:14:55In my spin-a-minim-a-minim-a-minim-a.
00:14:57Spin-a-min-a-minim-a-minim-a-minim-a.
00:14:59Thank you so much.
00:15:00Thank you so much.
00:15:01All right.
00:15:01Man, I'm going to tell you right now, it feels like the energy is palpable.
00:15:04That was just so good.
00:15:06Right?
00:15:06I mean, you know what?
00:15:07He's just going to be such a great host.
00:15:09I mean, he's in his prime.
00:15:11He's in his season right now.
00:15:12So I'm loving that he's going to be in the crowd.
00:15:14And there was a cover shot.
00:15:15Yeah, there was a cover shot.
00:15:16And our Essence audience, they were looking at his backside a little bit.
00:15:20Well, I mean, what side is not a good side of Outing Hot?
00:15:23Yeah, he had every good side.
00:15:25That's what I'm saying.
00:15:26So much fun.
00:15:27Yes, yes.
00:15:28Oh, my goodness.
00:15:29This carpet is heating up, y'all.
00:15:30It's heating up, y'all.
00:15:31Stay tuned.
00:15:50Now, welcome back, everyone.
00:15:52I heard Amanda has her first guest over there.
00:15:55Let's check in.
00:15:57That's right, Nandi.
00:15:58I am here with my first interview.
00:16:00Brandi Evans, she came to slay this carpet looking amazing.
00:16:04Brandi, how are you feeling?
00:16:05I'm feeling amazing.
00:16:06Child don't look like what I've been through.
00:16:07It's been a morning.
00:16:08You know how it goes.
00:16:09But, baby, my stylist, Mickey Freeman, got me together, and my attitude came right on back.
00:16:14We love that.
00:16:14Let's talk about this look.
00:16:15So, describe who you're wearing tonight.
00:16:17You know what?
00:16:17We call it like our flower child.
00:16:19I just want it to feel like just like a beautiful flower.
00:16:22I'm wearing Christina Kaye, styled by Mickey Freeman.
00:16:24And Christina Rendell flew in from New York to do my hair.
00:16:27Thank you, Christina.
00:16:28Baby, get into the back.
00:16:30Get into the back.
00:16:31You see it.
00:16:32Yes.

00:16:47zooming in on them feet, baby.
00:16:48So, we got to moisturize the heels.
00:16:50And just honestly, speaking of Smart Water, just staying hydrated.
00:16:54So, trying to stay hydrated, getting ready for the day.
00:16:56It's so important to stay hydrated.
00:16:57Now, we are here for black women in Hollywood.
00:16:59It's such an amazing event.
00:17:01The energy here is so crazy.
00:17:02Who are you most excited to see get honored tonight?
00:17:05All of them.
00:17:06Every single one of them.
00:17:08The girls are having a moment.
00:17:09Yes.
00:17:09Okay, and we love to see it.
00:17:10We're not missing this Black History Month.
00:17:12We're not missing, period.
00:17:13We're not missing it.
00:17:13We're rolling right into Women's History Month.
00:17:15Yes, absolutely.
00:17:16Exactly.
00:17:17Well, Brandi, thank you so much for stopping by.
00:17:19And we love your style.
00:17:20We love the dress.
00:17:21Have a great time.
00:17:22We can't wait to see you inside.
00:17:23You look beautiful, too.
00:17:24Thank you, love.
00:17:25Nani, back to you.
00:17:26And we have Miss Content Queen here herself.
00:17:30Miss Tia Mowry, how are you doing?
00:17:32You know, I am doing fantastic.
00:17:34Yes, yes.
00:17:34It is a beautiful day.
00:17:36Yeah.
00:17:37Absolutely.
00:17:37I mean, among all of these beautiful, amazing people.
00:17:40Yes.
00:17:41When you got on the carpet, what was the first thing that hit you?
00:17:43I mean, it is an incredible room this year.
00:17:46It's family reunion.
00:17:46It really, really is.
00:17:47You know, I actually ran into Wendy.
00:17:49Wendy Raquel.
00:17:50Is that right?
00:17:51Yes.
00:17:51And there were tons of screams.
00:17:52You guys didn't hear it from over here?
00:17:53We did.
00:17:54Okay, so that one.
00:17:55We did.
00:17:55We were unsure who it was, but now we know.
00:17:58So that was Wendy and myself.
00:17:59I hadn't seen her in a minute.
00:18:00And, you know, she's from the game.
00:18:02Yeah.
00:18:02Ties and Mac.
00:18:03Yes.
00:18:04So it is definitely like a family, you know, reunion.
00:18:08Definitely.
00:18:08And just community, you know?
00:18:10I feel like whenever I think of community, I think of togetherness, belonging.
00:18:14Yeah.
00:18:15Growth.
00:18:16Yeah.
00:18:17Inspiring.
00:18:18And those are the feels, you know, that I'm feeling right now.
00:18:22For you to be a black woman in Hollywood,
00:18:24how does it just, what does it mean to you to sort of just be in this room, soak up
00:18:29the goodness?
00:18:29You know what I'm saying?
00:18:30Especially in a time like this.
00:18:31Yes.
00:18:32Endurance.
00:18:33Yes.
00:18:35Courage.
00:18:35Yeah.
00:18:37Strength.
00:18:38Strength and representation.
00:18:41Yeah.
00:18:41I feel like, again, I'm a huge believer in community.
00:18:45And when you see people that look like you and who have gone through what your journey and,
00:18:51you know, what you've gone through, it gives you a sense of hope.
00:18:56Yeah.
00:18:57And inspiration and joy.
00:19:00Yeah.
00:19:00Yeah.
00:19:01You know what I mean?
00:19:01It feels so good to be around so many incredible people.
00:19:04And not even just women.
00:19:06I saw Boris, you know, on the white carpet.
00:19:10I saw him last year, too, and it just feels great, you know?
00:19:15Yeah, definitely.
00:19:16Well, listen, it is great to have you.
00:19:17You look fantastic.
00:19:18You look amazing.
00:19:19So regal.
00:19:19You know, the Valentino said, I'll go and just stand and step out on it.
00:19:22You know what I mean?
00:19:23Yes, she did.
00:19:23Yes, she did.
00:19:24You see it.
00:19:25I have one last question for you.
00:19:27You are my favorite person on social media.
00:19:29Oh, my gosh.
00:19:29What does it mean to just let loose and have fun?
00:19:32We love to see you.
00:19:33The characters are hilarious.
00:19:35Amazing, right?
00:19:35It's, to me, it's all about authenticity.
00:19:38Yes.
00:19:38Meaning being able to show up as myself.
00:19:41Mm-hmm.
00:19:42You know, I am an actress and an entrepreneur and all those things.
00:19:45But when you are an actor, you have to play a character.
00:19:48But to be able to have a platform where I can be able to share my vulnerability and my authenticity
00:19:54and just my journey in life, it is healing, it is rewarding, and it is fun, you know?
00:20:02So thank you just for acknowledging it and, you know, everybody who...
00:20:08I mean, party chuckle.
00:20:08We do have a party chuckle.
00:20:11We have fun.
00:20:13A time is had.
00:20:14And you know what?
00:20:15If I'm not having fun, I'm not going to do it.
00:20:18So as long as I'm having fun and inspiring and empowering, then I'm going to continue
00:20:23to do it.
00:20:23Well, you keep on doing it.
00:20:24Keep shining that light.
00:20:25I appreciate it.
00:20:26It's so good to see you.
00:20:26Have fun in there.
00:20:27Always a pleasure.
00:20:28Always.
00:20:28Thank you so much.
00:20:29Bye, guys.
00:20:30I'm going to tell you right now, this red carpet...
00:20:33Yes.
00:20:33Or should we call it a red carpet?
00:20:35Is it more of like a cream carpet?
00:20:36A regal carpet.
00:20:37A regal carpet.
00:20:38An angel carpet.
00:20:39There it is.
00:20:40I love it.
00:20:42A regal carpet.
00:20:43Hey!
00:20:44Hey!
00:20:48What are y'all doing?
00:20:49We showing all our love to black-founded brands.
00:20:51I think we know a thing or two about spreading the love.
00:20:55Show us how you spread the love for black-founded brands.
00:21:08Scott, the carpet is really heating up.
00:21:11Nandi is no joke.
00:21:12And so many familiar faces are making their way inside.
00:21:16I think now is a good time to check back in with Amanda for some more amazing red carpet
00:21:20looks.
00:21:21Amanda, who do you have with you over there?
00:21:23That's right, Nandi.
00:21:24I am here with Shaniqua Shonde and Tyler Lepley.
00:21:27You guys know them, castmates of the hit show Harlem, which we're all going to miss.
00:21:31They brought the sunshine here, looking amazing.
00:21:34How does it feel to be here in L.A. for black women in Hollywood?
00:21:37Oh, I'm thrilled that we have a space that's dedicated specifically to black women getting
00:21:42the flowers that they deserve.
00:21:43I am prepared to scream and clap and lose my voice for my sisters and also be nourished
00:21:48just being in the environment.
00:21:49That is so beautiful.
00:21:50Now, Tyler, it's your first time here, right?
00:21:52Yes.
00:21:52Yeah, and we need to have more than one day to be able to, you know, celebrate what it
00:21:56is that we're here for.
00:21:57You know, black women doing their thing, thriving, and, you know, I wish it could be all year
00:22:01round, but I am here today to celebrate.
00:22:03That's right.
00:22:03That's right.
00:22:03Now, you're representing for the fellas.
00:22:05My girl's representing for the ladies.
00:22:06Let's describe your looks.
00:22:08So we're all about fashion here at Smartwater, so let's describe the looks for today.
00:22:11Well, I feel like Essence deserves some sunshine.
00:22:15It's a celebration, so I wanted to come in color and fun and just a little bit, little bit
00:22:20of sex appeal.
00:22:21I got a slight ankle out, you know what I mean?
00:22:23I'm trying to keep it modest.
00:22:25You look amazing, beautiful.
00:22:28Now, Tyler, what about you?
00:22:29What do you have on today?
00:22:30This is grayscale.
00:22:32It's a little butterscotch piece I pulled out the closet, you know.
00:22:35It's comfortable.
00:22:36Well, you know we are here with Smartwater, and they're all about making simple choices.
00:22:40So let's talk about get ready with me, right?
00:22:42Let's talk about what you do to get ready for a carpet as big as this.
00:22:45What is one thing, one simple choice you make for the carpet?
00:22:49Well, my simple choice is to hydrate.
00:22:52It's a long, hot day.
00:22:53The carpet is long.
00:22:55You got to make sure that your vocal cords are functioning properly, and then also you
00:22:59got to make sure that you handle everything beforehand because sometimes it's hard to get
00:23:02out of your gowns.
00:23:03So I hydrate so I can function properly.
00:23:06What about you, Tyler?
00:23:08You know what?
00:23:08It'll probably be along the same lines.
00:23:09I'm going to hydrate the skin.
00:23:10I'm going to definitely moisturize.
00:23:11That's right.
00:23:12You know, because there ain't nothing worse than, you know, having some ashy hands.
00:23:15You can't put no lotion on it.
00:23:16So I definitely make sure I throw some lotion on before these events, for sure.
00:23:19Yeah, you definitely got to stay hydrated.
00:23:20Got to make sure you moisturize.
00:23:22Now, one thing I want to definitely ask you guys, too, is if you can pick one person,
00:23:25one celeb, that you love their style because they just have that simplistic style, who would
00:23:30it be?
00:23:32For me, it's Tracee Ellis Ross.
00:23:34It ain't nothing simple about it.
00:23:36I love how bold she is and how fierce her choices are, and yet she still keeps it very
00:23:41classic and chic at the same time.
00:23:43She's my style icon.
00:23:45Like, it's the feathers, it's the textures, it's the colors.
00:23:47I'm obsessed with Tracee.
00:23:48Doesn't she do it so effortlessly?
00:23:50She does.
00:23:51She's just graceful.
00:23:53Just love her style.
00:23:54What about you?
00:23:55You know, there's a lot of people.
00:23:57I think right off the top of my head, I'm going to have to say Tiana Taylor.
00:24:00You know, I just love how she's fearless, and she's always ripping the runway in her own
00:24:04unique way.
00:24:05We are honoring Tiana Taylor today.
00:24:07She is one of our icons.
00:24:08Super excited to have her here with us and have you guys here with us and have a good
00:24:13time.
00:24:13We don't want to keep you here too long.
00:24:14We want y'all to go inside and have a good time.
00:24:16All right.
00:24:17Nandi and Scott, back to you.
00:24:19Now, Scott, we had to bring Coco right back.
00:24:21We saw her walk back, so we said, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:24:23No, no, no.
00:24:24I don't like it.
00:24:25Maybe that's Kiki, but it's okay.
00:24:27I accept it.
00:24:28So, we wanted to make sure that you touched here because you are just such an inspiration
00:24:33and light to the young women.
00:24:35Thank you so much.
00:24:36How does it feel to be in this room?
00:24:37I mean, it's super exciting.
00:24:38You know, sometimes you feel like a lone wolf in your journey, but to see all of this black
00:24:42beauty and black tenacity, it reminds you that, like, you know, we all go through these same
00:24:46plights, and I'm honored to be able to open doors for the next young black girl.
00:24:50Yeah.
00:24:50When you dropped the single, the video, you know what I'm saying?
00:24:55The hot and steamy.
00:24:56The sample, the video, the whole deal.
00:24:59You know.
00:25:00Did you have any idea?
00:25:01You knew that people were going to lose their minds over it, right?
00:25:03I knew it was going to be some strong reactions, either positive or negative, but, you know,
00:25:08for me, I feel like I don't want to do anything out of fear.
00:25:10And so if I have no fear, I would try things like that.
00:25:13So I just have to do it now, you know?
00:25:15I just was watching an interview where you said you're feeling really happy right now.
00:25:19Just can you go into detail about that?
00:25:21What season are you in in your life?
00:25:23I think I'm in the season of pushing myself and, I guess, letting go of those boxes that
00:25:28I feel like I owe to people.
00:25:30Like, okay, I do R&B.
00:25:31I have to stay in this lane.
00:25:32I can only do things that remind people of this.
00:25:34But I just feel like I'm going to have to push past that and teach people who I am versus
00:25:38tell people, what should I do?
00:25:40Tell me who you think I should be.
00:25:41So I'm excited and happy that I am continuing to do that.
00:25:44And my album will be even more of that.
00:25:46Thank you so much for joining us today.
00:25:48You're going to have an amazing time in there.
00:25:50I will, I will.
00:25:51You look fantastic.
00:25:52I'm holding my dress because this wind is trying to get me.
00:25:54Not on this one.
00:25:55Not on the SM stage.
00:25:56You should not go to Maryland or roll.
00:25:57Okay.
00:25:58Thank you guys for having me.
00:26:00Y'all have a good one.
00:26:07We're always going to go the extra mile for our kids.
00:26:09The work we do here is bigger than me.
00:26:14Confidence and ambition are great attributes.
00:26:16Especially when paired with respect and humility.
00:26:23We're not giving up until we fix this.
00:26:26I promise.
00:26:28Let's tell the freaking world.
00:26:43Oh, Jamaica E.D. is coming onto the platform.
00:26:46Come on in this crimson situation.
00:26:50It is very crimson.
00:26:51Yes.
00:26:51Shout out to all my soul lords out there.
00:26:53I know, that's right.
00:26:54How are you feeling today?
00:26:56I mean, this has got to be a, I imagine it's a beautiful moment.
00:27:00It's a moment of celebration.
00:27:01There's also a reminder of some, what also can, I would imagine, feel like some bittersweetness as well.
00:27:06But how do you feel today?
00:27:08Well, I feel great to be here today.
00:27:10Yeah.
00:27:10And I'm always happy to be amongst the 92%.
00:27:13Exactly.
00:27:14That part.
00:27:14But today, it's just beautiful.
00:27:17This event and what Essence always has done in its history to bring us together, the power of black women,
00:27:24the essence of black women, the beauty of black women.
00:27:27Yeah.
00:27:28But the resilience of black women.
00:27:29And I think in this moment in time, our resilience matters, but also our joy.
00:27:33Yeah.
00:27:33So I think we're getting it all today.
00:27:35So Taika, with you advocating for black women 100%, just in this room, seeing, walking past them, how do you
00:27:43feel?
00:27:44Oh, I always am filled.
00:27:45When I see black women, I'm excited.
00:27:47I'm filled.
00:27:48Yeah.
00:27:48Because I know there goes my sister.
00:27:51Yeah.
00:27:51She's dynamic, she's strong, but she also probably is facing struggles that we all face.
00:27:57And so sometimes when you're with your sisters and we're together, we understand each other without saying a word, but
00:28:05we also could celebrate our power.
00:28:06Like, I just was having a conversation with Miss Juanita Tillman, who, you know, unfortunately lost so much in the
00:28:14devastating fires, the Eaton fire, a longtime Altadena resident, a longtime servant to her community, a servant to her sorority,
00:28:22my sorority as well, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, the NAACP in Pasadena.
00:28:28But her resilience to still be here, to speak truth to power, to say, I am still standing and we
00:28:34must rebuild Altadena.
00:28:36And that's why I went with black women and so excited to be here today to talk about our collaboration
00:28:40with Essence.
00:28:41I know that's right.
00:28:42Well, Joteca, I want you to go in there and enjoy yourself.
00:28:44With style and grace.
00:28:46I know.
00:28:46I'm going to get this black girl magic going.
00:28:49Take care.
00:28:49Indeed, indeed.
00:28:55Chills for 48 hours.
00:28:57Poured into a frosted glass.
00:29:00Swimming in ice.
00:29:01For a lovely, lovely burn.
00:29:05Isn't that deliciously ironic?
00:29:09Okay, we cannot wait to find out who our winner is.
00:29:12Okay, I think Cammie is ready to announce our Essie's Choice Award winner.
00:29:16I can't wait.
00:29:17Cannot wait.
00:29:17Let's check back in.
00:29:19All right, so we are just about ready to announce the winner of the 2025 Essie's Choice Award presented by
00:29:25Diet Coke.
00:29:26But first, I'm going to remind everybody of this year's nominees one more time.
00:29:30We have Dominique Fishback, who we all fell in love with, with projects like Judas and the Black Messiah and
00:29:36Swarm.
00:29:37We also have the cast of Tyler Perry's Sisters, which we just can't get enough of.
00:29:41And then we have the amazing Emma Yahtzee Coronaldi, star of the hit series, Reasonable Doubt.
00:29:48Whether these nominees are breaking barriers, redefining beauty standards, or delivering performances that stay with us long after the credits
00:29:55roll,
00:29:56they consistently represent us in ways that make us so proud to be black women.
00:30:00Okay, guys, the moment is here.
00:30:03It is time to announce our winner.
00:30:05Drum roll, please.
00:30:06The drum roll is happening.
00:30:08And the winner of the 2025 Essie's Choice Award presented by Diet Coke is...
00:30:15Crystal Renee Hazlett, Ebony Obsidian, K.J. Smith, Mignon, and Novi Brown from the cast of Tyler Perry's Sisters!
00:30:25Yay!
00:30:26Yay!
00:30:28Congratulations!
00:30:30Oh, my God!
00:30:31I'm so excited for y'all.
00:30:32Oh!
00:30:33We have tears!
00:30:34We have tears!
00:30:35You're going to ruin my makeup.
00:30:36No, don't ruin the makeup, girl!
00:30:38You're going to be too sensitive for this.
00:30:40Oh, my God!
00:30:40I am so happy for y'all.

00:30:50I feel like I'm part of the sisters.
00:30:51Okay, what does it mean to win this award, and what would you like to say to everyone out there
00:30:55who voted for you?
00:30:57Our Sisters fans are the best.
00:30:59Thank you guys so much.
00:31:00Like, I can speak for all of us.
00:31:02We have never been nominated or honored for anything.
00:31:05For all the hard work, we've done them nine seasons in, and you see the tears.
00:31:10KJ, ugh, I can't.
00:31:12Like, and to do freaking out.
00:31:14Thank you!
00:31:15No, it's because of y'all.
00:31:18That's it.
00:31:19That's it.
00:31:20Sisters fans, ain't nobody like y'all.
00:31:22Period.
00:31:23Ain't no one above y'all.
00:31:24This is the fan base to have.
00:31:27We are so blessed.
00:31:28We are so honored.
00:31:29These tears are tears of hard work, discipline, focus, joy, and growth.
00:31:34Like, thank you.
00:31:36Thank you, Essence.
00:31:37Oh, my gosh.
00:31:38I would like to say that we work really hard.
00:31:42I think that people need to understand that we work really hard.
00:31:47We show up.
00:31:48We love our people.
00:31:50We love each other.
00:31:51And we have given everything we've got to this show.
00:31:56And I just feel deeply appreciative and grateful for this honor.
00:32:01We will not take it for granted, and we will continue to show up.
00:32:05I love this.
00:32:07I love this.
00:32:07I love this.
00:32:07What do you want to say, Mignon?
00:32:08How do you feel?
00:32:09Well, I mean, y'all know me.
00:32:11I mean, honestly, thanking God first for the opportunity.
00:32:15And then, of course, Tyler Perry for creating the show.
00:32:18And everyone who, like, our crew, there is no harder working crew.
00:32:22Like, I just want to thank, I mean, and then, of course, our parents,
00:32:26our families who've supported us, like, when we're crazy for those three weeks
00:32:30of shooting.
00:32:32Yeah.
00:32:32And our fans, y'all are gung-ho.
00:32:35And we ride for y'all.
00:32:36Honestly, when it's hard, it's for y'all.
00:32:38It's like, let's, we owe it to the fans, and y'all have repaid us,
00:32:43and we want to thank you.
00:32:44And I think it's so fitting that the Black Women in Hollywood Awards
00:32:47is where we get our first award, as Crystal mentioned.
00:32:50So, Black women support Black women.
00:32:52That's right.
00:32:53Amen.
00:32:54I'm so proud.
00:32:55This is so beautiful.
00:32:56The representation, just to feel seen, right?
00:32:59It's incredible.
00:33:00It's incredible.
00:33:02Congratulations, you guys.
00:33:04Congratulations, you guys.
00:33:04Congratulations, you guys.
00:33:11So, Scott, even though we're here celebrating Black women in Hollywood,
00:33:15it is absolutely not lost on us that there are people, still so many,
00:33:19in this Los Angeles community who are hurting and rebuilding
00:33:23from the devastating wildfires that hit the city hard in January.
00:33:26Here with us are a few local residents,
00:33:29specifically from Alcadena and Pasadena communities,
00:33:32who are impacted by those wildfires.
00:33:34Thank you so much for being with us today.
00:33:36Can you let us know who you are?
00:33:37Yes, I'm Juanita West Tillman, an Alcadena resident.
00:33:41Amazing.
00:33:42Zaire Calvin, Alcadena residents.
00:33:46Nikki High, Alcadena resident, owner of Octavia's Bookshelf in Pasadena.
00:33:51Now, can you share a little bit more about how you each were impacted by the wildfires?
00:33:56Well, my home was totally destroyed.
00:33:58I've lived there for 52 years and worked very hard building generational wealth for my children
00:34:04and grandchildren, and everything's gone.
00:34:07My home and two cars, and we owned three other homes on the street.
00:34:12So, three are burned and one is left standing.
00:34:15So, it's very challenging, but we have hope.
00:34:19And the resiliency of this community, we know, is going to bring us through this.
00:34:23So, resilience is important.
00:34:25Yes, I lost two homes also, my childhood home, and my sister actually died in the fire.
00:34:33So, it's been rough for the whole community and, you know, just getting through it day by day.
00:34:41Listen, our hearts are with you, man.
00:34:43Absolutely.
00:34:43I appreciate that.
00:34:46I live in the fire zone.
00:34:48Most of my street is gone.
00:34:50Our structure is still standing.
00:34:53But because of the smoke damage, we're still displaced.
00:34:56Yeah, absolutely.
00:34:57Listen, I know it is not even easy to recount the loss.
00:35:00And I'm sure it is not even, for many people, can't even contextualize what that actually feels like.
00:35:07So, thank you for even offering.
00:35:09Do you mind giving a brief?
00:35:12To contextualize it, everybody losing everything at the same time, meaning a whole community losing everything.
00:35:21I don't even have a baby picture of myself.
00:35:23So, our whole community is in pain day by day, even though we smile through it.
00:35:29It's a lot of pain, and we're not okay, as we say.
00:35:33We know God has us, but we're not okay.
00:35:36So, what is getting you through?
00:35:38What is helping you move through?
00:35:40What are you drawing on?
00:35:41What is being the most help to you day by day?
00:35:45Actually, it's each other.
00:35:46It's this community.
00:35:47We are sometimes physically holding each other up, but also spiritually and emotionally.
00:35:53We are all so dedicated to the rebuilding of Altadena as it was, and not as some folks would like
00:36:01to see it become.
00:36:02Right.
00:36:02And so, it's just through the generosity of so many people outside of our community, but just having each other
00:36:08is what's keeping us going.
00:36:10Now, how can people help?
00:36:12You know, if they want to help you rebuild those communities, if they want to stay involved, what are the
00:36:16best resources?
00:36:17They can stay with us during the long term, providing resources and providing funds.
00:36:22Some of the people who lost their homes are underinsured, and they're going to need help.
00:36:27We all will need help because of the cost of supplies and everything.
00:36:31So, we will need help to be able to rebuild, and we plan to do that.
00:36:35And with all of you helping in this event and other events, families, friends, and organizations that are helping us,
00:36:43we know we can do it.
00:36:44Well, listen, we stand by you.
00:36:46Absolutely.
00:36:47We stand with you, and you can trust and believe that support will not end.
00:36:50And can I add to that, the NAACP has a fund that's going on, and if you donate there, and
00:36:57I also have a non-profit called ExtremeAthletics.org, no E, and we do need funding.
00:37:03This is a long haul.
00:37:04My mother didn't even have insurance for her home, so even I have insurance for mine.
00:37:10So, it's a lot of families out there, and for the disabled and our elderly, I want to say this,
00:37:17they've been railroaded through this process, and it's been embarrassing, and I'm hurt, very hurt for my community when it
00:37:25comes to all of my elders and the disabled because it's been a real rough process for them.
00:37:30Absolutely.
00:37:31It's not over.
00:37:31Like I said, we are not going nowhere.
00:37:33Yeah, we're not.
00:37:33We are right there along with you.
00:37:35I know there are people who are watching this right now who are logging on and hooking it up.
00:37:40Yeah, exactly.
00:37:41Send that money.
00:37:42Yes.
00:37:42That's what we're talking about.
00:37:44Send it.
00:37:44Thank you for the spot.
00:37:45I'm not going to act like you're not talking about what we're talking about.
00:37:47And thank you so much for being here.
00:37:49I appreciate it.
00:37:58So, our first honoree is here, Ms. Ramla Muhammad.
00:38:02How are you doing?
00:38:03Yes.
00:38:04I'm doing amazingly.
00:38:05You're the honoree.
00:38:06I know.
00:38:07I'm talking about it.
00:38:07I know.
00:38:07It's great.
00:38:08I'm doing amazingly.
00:38:09I mean, what could be a better day?
00:38:12No, honestly.
00:38:12To be honored.
00:38:13Even if, honestly, I've been to this event just as an attendee.
00:38:17Yeah.
00:38:18And it's magical.
00:38:19I mean, it truly is one of the best rooms in Hollywood.
00:38:21Yes.
00:38:22Yes.
00:38:22Absolutely.
00:38:23Absolutely.
00:38:23It's magical when you walk in.
00:38:26And then to be on the other side on stage, you know, we'll see how that goes.
00:38:31Well, I mean, when you found out that you were going to be an honoree, what did that feel
00:38:34like for you?
00:38:34So, it's funny.
00:38:35I got the email.
00:38:36It said, Essence Black Women in Hollywood.
00:38:38And I was like, oh, I guess they're giving tickets early.
00:38:42Right.
00:38:42You know, I was like, yeah, this was supposed to be the VIP email.
00:38:48And I was like, honor.
00:38:49Oh, wait.
00:38:50Oh, like it hit me.
00:38:52Like, and I think what it is, is, you know, you do your work and, you know, you hope people
00:38:56watch it and recognize it.
00:38:57And then something like this happens and you're like, wow.
00:39:00I, again, it was, I was really overwhelmed and, and I don't know, humbled and all.
00:39:05I could use a thousand adjectives.
00:39:07And how was that cover shoot?
00:39:09Because you are one of our digital cover stars.
00:39:11And how does that feel to have an Essence cover?
00:39:14Amazing.
00:39:15I mean, so I went, you know, I asked them, I said, okay, so I want to just show up.
00:39:19They're like, yeah, you just show up.
00:39:20We'll have hair.
00:39:21We'll have nails.
00:39:21We'll have, you know, makeup.
00:39:23We'll have styling.
00:39:24And, you know, I was like, oh, okay.
00:39:26And I got there and it just, you know, Zarina, you know, styled it.
00:39:30It was amazing.
00:39:30And everyone was just on it.
00:39:33Zarina Eggers don't play.
00:39:34She doesn't.
00:39:35Yeah.
00:39:35And then, and then just the, the, they're playing Beyonce and the music.
00:39:39So everyone made me feel very comfortable because like I had never done a big photo shoot like
00:39:44this.
00:39:44So, so yeah.
00:39:46Well, I mean, you make it look easy.
00:39:47You showed up today on this carpet looking like you've done it a million times.
00:39:50You know what I'm saying?
00:39:51I had some help.
00:39:53My friends, Crystal and Kanika, who are my childhood friends, they have a company called Nick
00:39:57and Chris and, and they styled me, put my, put my stuff together.
00:40:00Well, you look amazing.
00:40:02Made sure I, made sure I got right.
00:40:03I said, look, y'all, I gotta, gotta be right.
00:40:05Yeah.
00:40:06All the way together.
00:40:07Yeah, exactly.
00:40:08And my boyfriend's wearing green too.
00:40:09So I was like, come on.
00:40:10Come on, black love.
00:40:12So Ramla, I wanted to ask, how important for you is it to tell black stories, you know,
00:40:16with reasonable doubt on and all of the other projects that you've worked on?
00:40:19What does it mean for you to just put black women and black men first on your screens?
00:40:23You know, honestly, it, I know some people feel like it might be an obligation, but it really isn't.
00:40:28It's like, it truly is like what I love to do.
00:40:30And it speaks to what I know, you know, it's like people who are in the military, you know,
00:40:35want to write military stories, you know?
00:40:37And so that's how it is for me.
00:40:39Like, I have always loved black love.
00:40:41You know, I have my black parents, my, you know, family, my boyfriend, you know, I, the,
00:40:47the, I have such, such great men in my life, you know, and that's also part of the show
00:40:50too, to showcase the different levels of black men and women, you know?
00:40:55And I think that in our zeitgeist right now, you know, there's a lot of talk about don't
00:41:01go to Cheez-Sick Factory or don't do, you know, like what are the rules and how people
00:41:04should treat each other?
00:41:05And me and my boyfriend, our first date was at the Cheez-Sick Factory.
00:41:08I know that's right.
00:41:10I know that's right.
00:41:10I love me some fettuccine Alfredo.
00:41:12It was quite delightful.
00:41:14It worked?
00:41:15It did.
00:41:16Yeah, exactly.
00:41:16We've been together for a couple years.
00:41:18Yeah, so I just, I just feel like it's good for us to have honest conversations with each
00:41:25other that start with respect and empathy.
00:41:27And that's what I try to show on the show.
00:41:29Like if you actually can communicate and be friends and have that respect, then, then this
00:41:34black love can thrive.
00:41:35Listen, you, not only do you spotlight the, you, you throw us for a curve ball on this show
00:41:39too.
00:41:40You think you know where the show is going and somebody killed somebody.
00:41:43You know what I'm saying?
00:41:44Who else?
00:41:44Who else?
00:41:45They all must go.
00:41:48Well, have so much fun tonight.
00:41:49Yes, we can enjoy that room.
00:41:51Fantastic.
00:41:51And thank you guys.
00:41:52You know, over the last couple of days, there's so much love and support.
00:41:55And it's so great.
00:41:56Deserving.
00:41:57And a good energy to have.
00:41:58It's not going to stop now.
00:41:59You've been in that room?
00:42:00Yes.
00:42:00Exactly.
00:42:01It's about to hit a thousand.
00:42:02Oh, we're going to stop for you.
00:42:03I love it.
00:42:04I love it.
00:42:04Have so much fun this afternoon.
00:42:05Oh, thank you so much.
00:42:06All right, then.
00:42:06Thanks for talking to you guys.
00:42:07You as well.
00:42:08You as well.
00:42:09Congratulations.
00:42:10Oh, shoot.
00:42:11Y'all, we just getting started.
00:42:12I mean, what?
00:42:13I mean, the carpet, you guys, if you could see the carpet right now, it's shoulder to
00:42:20shoulder.
00:42:22And so, Scott.
00:42:22The energy is wild.
00:42:24I mean, it's wild.
00:42:25And this is what Black Women in Hollywood is all about.
00:42:27Also, the looks.
00:42:28I mean, oh my gosh.
00:42:28I mean, I've seen all the colors.
00:42:30People come in their Sunday best.
00:42:31Do you hear me?
00:42:32I mean, this is, this is, what?
00:42:35Do you see this, Scott?
00:42:36It's wild right now.
00:42:37I mean.
00:42:38If only.
00:42:39If only.
00:42:39If only y'all could be here.
00:42:41You know what I'm saying?
00:42:41That's why we're holding it down for you.
00:42:43That's why we're hosting.
00:42:47I am with my girl, Achieng Agutu, who you all know.
00:42:51She's a content creator and an online, like, motivational bestie.
00:42:55Girl, how are you doing today?
00:42:57I'm doing so good.
00:42:57Thank you so much for having me.
00:42:58You're looking absolutely delicious.
00:43:00You look so good.
00:43:02No, we're going to talk about your look, because you're looking amazing.
00:43:04So, let's describe your look for us today.
00:43:06All right.
00:43:06So, the vibe I was going for today was, like, just goddess, okay?
00:43:10So, I'm wearing a black designer up top, Nigerian designer from Asiyami Gold.
00:43:14She's fabulous.
00:43:15My skirt is Simkai.
00:43:18I wanted something that still gave flair and power and magic and flower.
00:43:22My shoes are Aminamwadi.
00:43:24The jewelry is Swarovski, because I want to shine bright like a diamond.
00:43:29And the body is really me.
00:43:31And the location is success.
00:43:34No, that's right.
00:43:35And I've got to say, the makeup looks amazing.
00:43:37You look hydrated.
00:43:38And you know we're here with Smart Water.
00:43:40And we want to talk about simple choices we make to make our Get Ready With Me so easy.
00:43:45So, what is one thing that you have to have to come on the red carpet?
00:43:48Oh, well, for me, I would say I love a good glossy lip, okay?
00:43:55A glossy lip.
00:43:56I love something shiny.
00:43:57I love something that's making you know that, honey, this right here, when I'm yapping, she's still there.
00:44:02And, of course, I love a good hydration, honey, because one thing about Smart Water is they're going to address
00:44:06the dehydration in the room.
00:44:08Make you feel good.
00:44:09Make you feel present.
00:44:10Make you feel happy.
00:44:11So, you know, a little Smart Water sip or gulp or chug before I leave the room, you know?
00:44:19Absolutely, girl.
00:44:20I'm literally in the back sipping my Smart Water to keep me hydrated here on this beautiful carpet.
00:44:25And speaking about being in rooms and just the energy here, how would you describe black women in Hollywood?
00:44:30Ooh, I would describe them as being, ooh, what word can I use?
00:44:35Divine.
00:44:36Oh, my God.
00:44:37I think it is so special that we're here celebrating black women and celebrating just the hard work that we've
00:44:42put into creating spaces like this.
00:44:44And I think it's magical.
00:44:45It's powerful.
00:44:46I'm out here living, y'all.
00:44:48The fact that I'm standing here next to this beautiful queen is insane.
00:44:52So, I'm out here living.
00:44:53I'm so excited that we're celebrating black women doing the thing 24-7-365, okay?
00:44:59So, y'all better keep, like, what?
00:45:01Hooked on, looped in, because, honey, this is just the beginning.
00:45:04We're just getting started.
00:45:05We are just getting started.
00:45:07Now, I have to ask you, before we go inside, I know we came to look all cute, but we're
00:45:10here to honor four beautiful women.
00:45:13Who are you excited to see get honored today?
00:45:16Cynthia Eriva.
00:45:20That's who I'm here for!
00:45:22Alphaba!
00:45:23I'm ready for you, girl!
00:45:25I'm ready for part two.
00:45:26I'm ready for Wicked 2.
00:45:27We need a Wicked 2, and I'm going to be in the background.
00:45:30Cynthia, call us, please.
00:45:32Call us, beepers, if you want me.
00:45:34I love it.
00:45:34Well, thank you, love.
00:45:36I want you to go inside and have a great time, but thank you for stopping by here with us
00:45:40at Smartwater.
00:45:40Thank you so much!
00:45:41That's right.
00:45:42Nandia and Scott, back to you.
00:45:44We've got Miss Tyra Banks coming through!
00:45:47All right!
00:45:47How are you doing?
00:45:48Scott, it's time to smile!
00:45:49Yes, it is.
00:45:49One, two, three.
00:45:52Mmm.
00:45:52Mmm.
00:45:52If it doesn't hurt, you're not doing it right.
00:45:55Miss Tyra Banks, it is such an honor to have you here, being honored as our Luminary Spotlight honoree.
00:46:01How does it feel?
00:46:01It feels great, because this is the first time they've ever done the Luminary Spotlight.
00:46:05Yes!
00:46:06It's our first ever award!
00:46:08Breaking ground once again.
00:46:10Oh my gosh, I feel great, yes.
00:46:13I have to ask you, because you have seen some of the most intense carpets, you've been in some of
00:46:18the most beautiful rooms.
00:46:19Yes, she has.
00:46:20But what is it about black women in Hollywood with Essence that feels so different?
00:46:25Yeah.
00:46:25Okay, so black women, we are so powerful.
00:46:28Absolutely.
00:46:29So mighty, so beautiful, so resilient, but then you put it all in the same room.
00:46:35Baby!
00:46:36And it's like an earthquake, earth shape.
00:46:38Yes, yes.
00:46:39Right?
00:46:39Like just the concentration of it is just like, we're going to have to get some ball bearings on this
00:46:44building so that we can just roll with this.
00:46:47Yes.
00:46:47Yes.
00:46:47So you are the Essence March-April beauty cover star.
00:46:53How did it feel just to be back on a cover, Tyra?
00:46:56Back in that mode, back modeling, smizing, how did it feel?
00:46:59It felt amazing because I said that I'm going to officially come out of modeling retirement.
00:47:06Yes.
00:47:06And the runway that did that was Victoria's Secret.
00:47:09Come on.
00:47:10And the magazine cover was Essence.
00:47:12I love that.
00:47:13That's like, if I could drop this mic and not get sued and make this interview bad for the next
00:47:19person.
00:47:20But this is a high drop moment to do this with Essence.
00:47:24It's like so much more powerful than all of us here, right?
00:47:27It's just like, whoa.
00:47:28Absolutely.
00:47:29You talked about how much the industry has changed.
00:47:31You talked about how much and even how you are on the forefront of much of that change.
00:47:36What do you hope, stepping back into the industry in this way, what do you hope to also bring with
00:47:41you?
00:47:42Yeah.
00:47:42I mean, I have so much knowledge, so much, I don't know.
00:47:47But I feel, I want to bring on my shoulders, on my booty, on my keevage, on my head, my
00:47:55forehead, all the black women, all the women that are older and feel like, oh, it's done.
00:48:01I'm over.
00:48:02It's not over.
00:48:03And to show them, it is just beginning.
00:48:06I love that.
00:48:06We may be hot flashing, but we hot as hell.
00:48:08Right.
00:48:09Exactly.
00:48:09Right.
00:48:09Baby Smith always says it gets greater later.
00:48:11It's greater later.
00:48:13Yes, it's the black and the berry, the sweeter, the juice, the older, the berry, the juicier, the better, the
00:48:18juicier, the juicier, the juicier, the juicier, the peach.
00:48:20There we go.
00:48:21There we go.
00:48:21And the oranges.
00:48:22There you go.
00:48:23Tyra, thank you so much for interviewing with us.
00:48:26Have an amazing time.
00:48:27And congratulations on your Luminary Spotlight Honoree.
00:48:30You never know who is going to grace this beautiful white carpet.
00:48:34I'm with Kat Graham and Jackie Aina.
00:48:36Both looking stunning, looking beautiful.
00:48:39Hi, ladies.
00:48:39How are you feeling?
00:48:40You look beautiful.
00:48:41So good.
00:48:42We're in good company.
00:48:43Yeah.
00:48:43Girl, like this is bomb.
00:48:45You look amazing.
00:48:45Enough about me.
00:48:46Let's talk about y'all's looks.
00:48:47Let's talk about your look.
00:48:47Jackie, who are you wearing today?
00:48:49They told me they was not going to ask me that.
00:48:51And now I...
00:48:53Now you don't know?
00:48:54Milanova.
00:48:54Milanova.
00:48:55This is actually my second time wearing Milanova this week.
00:48:57Milanova, whoever y'all are, y'all, yay.
00:48:59Get it together because period.
00:49:01The looks, I've been eating them up.
00:49:02Yeah, I love them right now.
00:49:04Definitely doing that.
00:49:05And Kat, you got on the denim on denim.
00:49:06I love a denim look.
00:49:07Our boot pants.
00:49:08These are boot pants.
00:49:10These are YSL boot pants.
00:49:13Do you see what's happening?
00:49:16I know you both know a lot about getting ready for events like the red carpet and just really
00:49:20major events here, right, in L.A.
00:49:21So let's talk about simple style choices you make.
00:49:24We're here with Smart Water.
00:49:24So what's one simple style choice that you love to make for a red carpet?
00:49:27You're not going to like my answer because they're not simple.
00:49:30I'm just not as simple.
00:49:31I'm not in my simple era.
00:49:33I'm sorry.
00:49:33Like, why spend all that money on the product and be simple with it?
00:49:36Like, okay, simple, shower, exfoliate.
00:49:40That's simple.
00:49:41Drink water.
00:49:42You should also do that.
00:49:43So we could say, yes, please hydrate.
00:49:45Please hydrate.
00:49:46Stop vaping and hydrate.
00:49:48A word.
00:49:48That was a PSA from Jackie Aina.
00:49:51You know, since it's Smart Water, it is actually so important to stay hydrated.
00:49:55These events, even though you see us and we look calm, there's a lot of energy.
00:49:59It can be very nerve-wracking.
00:50:01There's cameras in your face.
00:50:02You've got to have everything perfect, hair, makeup, perfect.
00:50:04You know, there's stylists.
00:50:06There's so much that goes into this.
00:50:07But honestly, water is really the key to health.
00:50:11Like, just staying hydrated, making sure you take care of your body, your skin.
00:50:14You know, you can have all the makeup in the world and all the fashion in the world,
00:50:17but if you're not healthy, it'll show.
00:50:18So I would say that that would be, for me, the most important element of radiating your essence.
00:50:26After this, I'm going to take a sip of Smart Water because I really need that hydration in this moment.
00:50:32Now, thank you both so much for coming here.
00:50:34We hope you have a great time at Black Women in Hollywood.
00:50:36But before I let you go, who are you excited to see today?
00:50:39Oh, my gosh.
00:50:40I saw Kyla Pratt.
00:50:41I haven't seen her in forever.
00:50:44David Oyelowo is right here.
00:50:45And Natalie Emmanuel is right here.
00:50:47And I just, there's so many great people that I love.
00:50:49I saw Megan Good and all my favorite, all my favorite little friends.
00:50:53So.
00:50:53It feels like a family reunion here.
00:50:54Absolutely.
00:50:55It feels really good.
00:50:55What about you, Jackie?
00:50:56Well, I haven't seen Megan yet, but I can't wait to see her.
00:50:59One of my favorite Leos.
00:51:00Shout out to Megan.
00:51:02Love Kyla.
00:51:02Just recently met her for the first time.
00:51:04She's such a beautiful spirit.
00:51:05I just got to pour into her.
00:51:06She's such a big part of my childhood.
00:51:08So it was really an honor getting to meet her and tell her that in person.
00:51:11And I was excited to see Niecy.
00:51:14Niecy Nash.
00:51:15She looks stunning.
00:51:15I didn't know you could watch for too.
00:51:17She's here.
00:51:17Listen, some of everybody is here for Essence, Black Women in Hollywood.
00:51:21You never know who you're going to see, but I don't want to keep you guys waiting.
00:51:23So I'm going to toss it back to you, Nandy and Scott.
00:51:26Oh, shoot.
00:51:27The carpet is on and popping like so, like that.
00:51:31We have me, Tabitha Brown.
00:51:33Yes, we do.
00:51:35How are you feeling today?
00:51:37I feel very good.
00:51:38How's your hip?
00:51:38Everything's good?
00:51:39Honey, the hip is hipping today.
00:51:40Yes.
00:51:41Hippolita, okay?
00:51:42She doing all right.
00:51:43I hopped up on her.
00:51:44I said, okay.
00:51:45You look good.
00:51:47You're feeling good?
00:51:47I feel good.
00:51:48Good, good, good.
00:51:48I'm grateful.
00:51:49Tabitha, you always have the most amazing energy, especially when the year started out a little crazy,
00:51:54right?
00:51:55What keeps you going?
00:51:56What keeps you positive?
00:51:57Because I need some of that.
00:51:59We had to take a minute for the way this year has started out.
00:52:01We did.
00:52:01We did.
00:52:01But you know what?
00:52:02I'm intentional with joy.
00:52:04It's a choice that we make.
00:52:06Every day is not always the best day, but because we are alive to go through it, honey,
00:52:10that's what I look at as the positive.
00:52:12Absolutely.
00:52:12And I just, you know, I've been in the dark side before.
00:52:15Yeah.
00:52:16I've suffered from depression.
00:52:17It's no fun.
00:52:18No.
00:52:18And so I choose light every day, and I'm just, you know, I'm a lovable person, and I love people.
00:52:23Yeah.
00:52:24So it's a choice that I make.
00:52:25Absolutely.
00:52:26The choice.
00:52:26Yeah.
00:52:26The choice of making every day.
00:52:29Today's going to be my best.
00:52:30Come on.
00:52:31No matter what that best is.
00:52:32That's right.
00:52:32I'm going to give it my best.
00:52:33And even if you're having a bad one, it don't mean you got to go mess up somebody else's.
00:52:37Exactly.
00:52:37Exactly.
00:52:38Oh.
00:52:39You hear me?
00:52:39Okay.
00:52:41Yeah.
00:52:41We are here celebrating black women in Hollywood with Essence.
00:52:44Tell me, what does it mean when you walk into that room?
00:52:47What does it feel like?
00:52:47How does it fuel you?
00:52:48It is so inspiring, right, to walk in a room with women who look like me, who we understand
00:52:54the same struggles that we've had and that we've overcame, and look at us, showing up
00:52:59looking good.
00:53:00Looking good.
00:53:00Smelling good.
00:53:02Smell it.
00:53:03Did you smell me when I walked up?
00:53:04Smell it real good.
00:53:05Come on.
00:53:06And you just caught out of we and blew it through.
00:53:09That's a little her business, okay?
00:53:11You hear me?
00:53:11Yeah.
00:53:12But it's so inspiring to know, like, look at how far we have come, and we're still in
00:53:17it.
00:53:18Absolutely.
00:53:18And we're still going.
00:53:19And so every time I see so many amazing women, I'm inspired to just do more and keep
00:53:23showing up as my authentic self and just, yeah, be in town.
00:53:27Listen, you give us license to do the very same.
00:53:29Absolutely.
00:53:30And win all the while.
00:53:31Definitely.
00:53:32Go have an amazing time in there, Tabitha.
00:53:35Please enjoy your night.
00:53:37It's so good.
00:53:37It's good.
00:53:38Yeah!
00:53:38We be cutting up.
00:53:40It's all the way down.
00:53:41I'm feeling left out.
00:53:42Yeah.
00:53:43We be cutting up, too.
00:53:44Because she got all green earrings and things, okay?
00:53:46And she's cute.
00:53:47Thank y'all.
00:53:48Listen, we are cutting up on this carpet.
00:53:50You do not want to miss anything that's coming up next.
00:53:55Oh, soup!
00:53:57Chilled for 48 hours.
00:53:59Poured into a frosted glass.
00:54:02Swimming in ice for a lovely, lovely burn.
00:54:07Isn't that deliciously ironic?
00:54:11Cynthia Erivo.
00:54:13Hi.
00:54:13Black women in Hollywood.
00:54:15Essence honoree.
00:54:16Yes.
00:54:17What does it feel like when you got the call?
00:54:19I mean, this room is full of so much love.
00:54:21What did it feel like to know that you were going to be honored in this way?
00:54:24I was really overwhelmed when I got the call because it's happened before.
00:54:27And so I didn't think it could happen again.
00:54:30Right.
00:54:30And so to happen right now, whilst all of this is happening, is like a real cherry on top
00:54:35of everything going on.
00:54:37Yeah.
00:54:37I mean, it was so great to see you on screen.
00:54:39Clearly, you know, representation is so important.
00:54:42So how was it just for you to, you know, act in the role in Wicked and just, you know,
00:54:47really play an inspirational role?
00:54:49It's been a dream come true.
00:54:50I didn't know that this would happen.
00:54:52Yeah.
00:54:52I think I was just really happy to be able to do the role itself.
00:54:56It had been something that I wanted for a really long time.
00:54:59And so to be able to have the chance to play this wonderful character, Elphaba, was beyond
00:55:05my dreams.
00:55:06So this is insane.
00:55:10Are you tired?
00:55:11I am a little bit, but that's okay, you know.
00:55:13But I feel good.
00:55:16And supported.
00:55:17Yeah.
00:55:17Do you know what I mean?
00:55:18It's that good kind of tired.
00:55:19Like, oh, we've got, we've had some good things.
00:55:21It's like, good work has been done.
00:55:23And you have been running the race.
00:55:26I have, yeah.
00:55:26With the heels laced tight.
00:55:29Because the one thing I know about Cynthia is that she's not going to show, there ain't
00:55:33going to be nothing flat about it.
00:55:34No.
00:55:34No, no.
00:55:35We love a heel.
00:55:36You know?
00:55:37I don't care how tired my feet are, they will always be in a heel.
00:55:42Okay, can we get into this nail art today?
00:55:43Yes.
00:55:44Listen, we always need a moment for the nail art.
00:55:46Listen, what you're not going to do is ever pass up.
00:55:48You hear me?
00:55:49How often do you get your nails done?
00:55:50It depends on what's happening in the week.
00:55:53Okay, okay.
00:55:53Sometimes it could be every two weeks.
00:55:56Okay.
00:55:56Sometimes it could be every three days.
00:55:58Yes, yes.
00:55:59Because I want it to work with the outfits and the clothes.
00:56:02And I want to, you know, change it up for myself.
00:56:04And sometimes if I really like a set, they'll stay.
00:56:06They'll stay.
00:56:07But every time I've been on a camera, on a screen, they've probably been different.
00:56:12It's so funny.
00:56:13I was saying to you, we were talking about how you're feeling, you know, your energy levels
00:56:16and that kind of thing.
00:56:17I said, I don't know who is more tired right now.
00:56:18You or Jason Bolden, your stylist, because I'm going to tell you, y'all have been wearing
00:56:23us out every single time.
00:56:26But I don't know what I would have done without him because he's really done something really
00:56:32special for me.
00:56:32Like, as much as this role has changed my life, I think he also has been a part of
00:56:37that.
00:56:37I think he really has changed a lot for me.
00:56:40Absolutely.
00:56:41And some things that you don't even know, he's just one of the most incredible people
00:56:45I have ever, ever been in front of, with, been able to work with.
00:56:50And it happens to be his birthday today.
00:56:52And I know he would hate me saying this, but I have to.
00:56:55Happy birthday, Jason.
00:56:56Happy birthday, Jason.
00:56:57Because I love you so much.
00:56:57Happy birthday, Jason.
00:56:59Right now he's somewhere like, what?
00:57:00I know.
00:57:01He's so, I know.
00:57:01Don't be mad at me.
00:57:02Don't be mad at me.
00:57:03Don't be mad at me.
00:57:04But, you know.
00:57:04You have to celebrate the people who uplift you.
00:57:06Truly, truly.
00:57:07Yeah, absolutely.
00:57:07I remember seeing the silk dress at, I think it was the Oscar lunch, class of the 2025 Oscar
00:57:15dinner.
00:57:15Yep.
00:57:16And now you in this look today.
00:57:18Marjala.
00:57:19Oh, Marjala.
00:57:19What was the inspiration?
00:57:20What did you want to feel today?
00:57:21I just kind of want to, it's like cute and sexy at the same time.
00:57:24It's so fun.
00:57:25You know what I mean?
00:57:25It's like totally covered up, but also not.
00:57:26Yeah, but also not at all.
00:57:28Do you know what I mean?
00:57:29Yes.
00:57:29And also, like Christian Louboutin, he.
00:57:32I mean, a classic.
00:57:33But they have done a collaboration, so Tabby, it's the Tabby shoe.
00:57:37Oh, so Marjala and Christian Louboutin.
00:57:38Do you see the split toe?
00:57:39Yeah.
00:57:39Do you see the split toe?
00:57:41It's not a joke.
00:57:41It's not a joke.
00:57:43So these were sent for me to wear, and I love the combination of the two coming together.
00:57:49I just wanted to feel kind of whimsical and cool and sexy at the same time.
00:57:53We're still going with some of the colors that we've been wearing.
00:57:55Black is one of the colors that's just been running through the theme, because that's
00:57:59what she wears in the show.
00:58:01And I just kind of wanted to feel that witchiness.
00:58:03We're going to have a lot of that this week.
00:58:04Listen, we are days away from another big awards show.
00:58:08Yes.
00:58:08Do you want to tell us anything about what you might be wearing on that carpet?
00:58:11I'm going to tell you that we're performing.
00:58:13Oh.
00:58:14Because you know that now.
00:58:15Yes.
00:58:15Well, yeah, they say announce it.
00:58:16You know that now.
00:58:17Any idea of what you might be wearing on the carpet?
00:58:19I do have an idea of what I'm wearing on the carpet.
00:58:21Anything you want to share about you?
00:58:23No.
