20 October - National Evening Forecast Presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Have you been caught out by a heavy thundery shower today? There were a fair few around and
00:05there's still some more changeable unsettled weather to come as we go through this evening
00:09and overnight. Low pressure is still firmly in control. It's this that's been the driving force
00:13for some rain in the north, heavy thundery showers in the south and also some strong gusty winds. If
00:19you look at those isobars, you can see they're tightly packed both towards the north and the
00:22south. The unsettled weather is easing as we go through into Tuesday, not turning completely dry.
00:28There will still be some showery rain around for a little while yet, but actually towards
00:32Wednesday, actually through the bulk of the day, it's looking largely fine until this area
00:38of low pressure pushes its way. And now this is going to deepen as it runs across southern
00:42parts of the UK, but we'll have more information about that in a second. Back to the here and
00:47now and through the end of Monday, and like I said, still some further showers here and
00:51there. They are clearing away towards the east and fizzling out, but more rain piling in across
00:57western parts of Scotland, not especially heavy, but just a bit damp at times and some of that
01:01pushing into Northern Ireland too. There could be some early fog during the evening and the start
01:07of the night across eastern parts of the UK, but a lot of that's going to clear away out towards the
01:12North Sea. But otherwise, actually some clearer skies developing, particularly across eastern parts
01:17of Scotland, down the northeast of England through into the Midlands and central southern England.
01:21And where we get those clear skies, it may turn a little fresh, temperatures dropping to low single
01:25figures in rural spots and could see some fog, maybe even a little bit of localised frost across
01:32some parts of Scotland, perhaps. But most places with the cloud and particularly in the towns and
01:37cities staying relatively mild and lots of areas holding up in double digits. So then tomorrow it is
01:44going to be quite bright actually across some central eastern parts of England first thing. The sunshine
01:49continuing across parts of East Anglia into Kent well until towards lunchtime at least. Otherwise though,
01:55showery bursts of rain piling in from the west. Now they're not looking as heavy, not as frequent as
02:01the intense showers that some of us saw through today. But nonetheless, it will be a bit wet at
02:06times. And actually across parts of Scotland, where it's been largely dry for many, it's going to be a
02:11bit cloudy, a bit wetter than today. And some of those showers could merge into some longer spells of
02:17rain. There will be some sunshine around across Northern Ireland, central southern England and Wales,
02:22some decent sunny breaks, perhaps a bit more than we saw through today. And with that then, if you get
02:26the sunshine feeling a little bit warmer, temperatures may be up a degree or so, 15, 16,
02:30maybe 17 Celsius. But across parts of Scotland, less sunshine. So if anything, feeling a little bit
02:36fresher here. Then later on, as we go through Tuesday, still some showery bursts of rain here and
02:41there as we go through into the evening. But a lot of it's clearing away and dying out. And so most places
02:47will turn largely dry with lots of clear skies, more clear skies through Tuesday night than through
02:53this coming night and looking drier as well. But as you would expect, with easing winds and those
02:58clear skies, it's going to turn a little bit chillier, a bit fresher for most places, generally
03:03dropping into single digits and rural spots getting close to perhaps even around freezing. And so a bit
03:09of frost here and there and a greater chance of seeing some fog patches first thing on Wednesday
03:14morning. But otherwise, it's looking like a largely fine start to the day for many. Yes,
03:19there will be some showers coming into the northwest, but actually most places having some decent dry and
03:23sunny weather through large chunks of the day. But then there is some wetter weather starting to come
03:30in from the southwest. So turning cloudier later on across southern southwestern parts, a bit of rain
03:35pushing into parts of Cornwall as we head towards three, four o'clockish. And the winds will be starting
03:40to strengthen as well. Away from that, though, temperatures, well, they look relatively similar
03:45to both Monday and Tuesday, really, if you get the sunshine not feeling too bad. But under the cloud,
03:50a fresher feel for sure. Then that low pressure system, let's take a look at it. It is coming in
03:56from the southwest. And as I mentioned before, it's actually deepening as it comes across us and pushes
04:01out towards the North Sea. As a result, there is still some uncertainty as to exactly the track it's going
04:05to take, how deep it's going to be as it pushes across. But nonetheless, we need to be aware that
04:10it could bring some very wet and very windy weather, particularly across southern and eastern parts
04:15of England as we go through later Wednesday and into Thursday. And then it clears away towards the
04:21North Sea, likely to affect, well, the Netherlands, Denmark could be impacted by some particularly wet
04:27and windy weather. Meanwhile, we end up in a sort of showery theme with a change of our wind direction.
04:32And so things are turning colder as we go towards the weekend. But for more information about all
04:37of that, well, check out the week ahead forecast, which Anna is bringing to you this week. See you
04:41again soon. Bye bye.
