00:00Big 10 battle, Matt Rule.
00:02And here's what I love about this game.
00:04His dream job, quote unquote, is the Penn State Nittany Lions job.
00:08Every time he gets a win, it's going to look better for the Penn State Nittany Lions or his agent to re-up another contract with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
00:16This line opened up around five and a half, Joe.
00:18We're now sitting at some outlets over seven points at minus seven and a half as a road favorite towards Nebraska.
00:23The total is at 47 and a half.
00:26Nebraska on the road to take on P.J. Fleck, rowing the boat with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
00:31What is the spread line for this game tonight, Joe?
00:34Well, I think they call him what?
00:36Mini Mahomes, right?
00:37Dylan Raiola, the Nebraska quarterback.
00:40Yes.
00:40Well, he's going to be on full display here tonight in a primetime game.
00:45And it's interesting because not only him, but this entire Cornhuskers team, this line opened up at five and a half, Donnie.
00:53It has been bet up as high as minus nine middle of the week.
00:58And we talked about this game on Monday, and I said we need to keep an eye on this one, and we need to keep an eye on the next one we're going to talk about with Miami and Louisville.
01:07But there is no doubt that the Matt Rule, that whole idea of every program he's been to, the third year is the year that they kick it into another gear.
01:17And, yes, he played linebacker for Penn State.
01:21He's a Penn State alum.
01:22Everyone's talking about him.
01:24But it doesn't escape the fact, Donnie, that this would have been a perfect game in which the public is going to be like, wait a minute.
01:30I mean, Minnesota at home with P.J. Fleck, like what is going on here?
01:35Well, what's going on here is clear, is that P.J. Fleck, this is not the old Minnesota teams, especially defensively, Donnie.
01:44You know why? Because he lost his stud defensive coordinator, who, by the way, you'll be able to see tonight, Donnie, because you know where he's at?
01:52He's the University of Miami number one defense in the country.
01:56He's their defensive coordinator.
01:58They have no offense.
02:00They have absolutely no more defense.
02:03And that is why this line has moved where it is.
02:06Nebraska is the better team and should handle business here tonight.
02:10From the Big Ten over to the ACC tonight down in Miami, Miami Gardens, Florida here.
02:16That's going to be the Hurricanes taking on Louisville.
02:18Look at this line, Joe.
02:19Opened up 15 and a half at some outlets.
02:22Now we're seeing that below two touchdowns.
02:2413 and a half is the prevailing line across many of the sportsbooks.
02:27A total listed at 50 and a half.
02:28The number two Miami Hurricanes, fresh off of a bye.
02:32Perfect season underway.
02:34The spread line for Louisville and Miami tonight, Joe, is what?
02:37Well, it's funny because, again, when we talked about this on Monday, I said, Donnie, this line is 13, 13 and a half.
02:43And I'm going to be very interested to see if the public gets involved, because we know the public is going to look at Louisville here and say, because we haven't seen either of these teams in a couple of weeks.
02:54Right.
02:54So I wonder whether or not the public is not running to the window to lay two touchdowns with anybody here on a night.
03:00Plus, there's still that feeling of, wow, you know, waiting for Miami, that other shoe to drop there.
03:07Mario Cristobal, this, Mario.
03:09Yeah, I know.
03:10But the problem is the public and the tickets and the money have all been on Louisville this week, Donnie.
03:15And yet not once has this line moved.
03:18You know what that means.
03:20That means the line is frozen for a reason.
03:23It will not get the 14.
03:25There is plenty enough influential money in the marketplace keeping this exactly where it's going to be at kickoff, which is just under two touchdowns for the University of Miami.
03:37Primetime game for Carson Beck, one of the leaders in the clubhouse to win the Heisman Trophy.
03:41We'll see what the Hurricanes do tonight in that game.
03:43But back to the Big Ten, we go for a Saturday affair.
03:45Three o'clock, Purdue and Northwestern.
03:47Now, why would we be looking at this game?
03:49Purdue's not that good.
03:50Northwestern actually just got a head coach fired in a massive upset at Happy Valley.
03:55Look at this look-ahead line, Joe.
03:56I saw some outlets as close to a touchdown.
03:59Ain't there anymore.
04:00Minus two-and-a-halves and minus threes and a total 46-and-a-half.
04:04Northwestern riding high and mighty at home against Purdue.
04:07What's the spread line for this one?
04:09Well, and this is the one you've got to ask yourself, Donnie, right?
04:12So are we looking at an absolute letdown spot here for the Wildcats, right?
04:19I mean, 20-and-a-half point underdog against Penn State,
04:22and they pull the outright upset here?
04:26That's, you know, that's the big question here.
04:28I can tell you this, though.
04:30This Purdue team is a lot better than people give them credit for here.
04:35I think Coach Barry Odom and company here will have these guys ready to go.
04:41It would not shock me if just before kickoff, Donnie, this weekend,
04:45that this line begins to move a lot closer to Purdue than it does Northwestern.
04:50It is the ultimate of ultimate letdown spots here.
04:54We love to tell you it's a football Friday right here on the Sports Grid Network.
04:57This is the early line on Friday mornings.
04:59We have a lot of time, and we also have a lot of time to talk to some special people.
05:03Donnie writes out, I'm not so special.
05:05Joe Ranieri, he's not so special.
05:06You know who is special?
05:07It's Coach Terry Bowden on a Friday right here on the early line.
05:10Coach, love having you on with us.
05:13Well, we got great football from 6 o'clock.
05:16I'm on Central Time.
05:17From 6 o'clock on here, we got great football until midnight and then all day tomorrow.
05:22Can't wait.
05:23Now, Coach, you've been at some big games before,
05:25and I'm sure you saw your share of bad calls not go your way.
05:28You were in the building at Jordan-Hare this weekend.
05:31Bad calls went against the Tigers here that could determine the outcome of the SEC.
05:35What happened?
05:37Second game, Oklahoma, same thing happened to them.
05:40They lost by that score.
05:42It was amazing.
05:43Everything was Auburn.
05:44The way they played, they were tough in Georgia.
05:47They were about to go up 17 to 10 with a minute and 30 seconds left.
05:51They don't get the call.
05:52It's turning.
05:53All of a sudden, the sideline goes quiet.
05:56The entire stadium goes quiet.
05:58The inspiration was taken out.
06:00They were deflated.
06:01Nothing at that point forward, Auburn could not do a thing.
06:05They were almost waiting for something bad to happen.
06:07That's what happens when you lose close ballgames.
06:11Oh, Coach.
06:13It wasn't pretty.
06:14It wasn't pretty, but I don't know how close this game in my neck of the woods is going
06:20to be at the Hard Rock Stadium tonight with Louisville and the U.
06:24It's 13 and a half.
06:26Two touchdown favorites for the U.
06:28And it's out of sight, out of mind, because we haven't seen these two teams in a little
06:32bit of a while here, it feels like.
06:35Well, you know, it's going to be a great game.
06:37Louisville and Miami, it's the two top defenses in the conference.
06:41They both can score points.
06:43But Miami, but they have great defenses as well.
06:46The problem is Louisville has been inconsistent.
06:48You know, they've had a turnover every game in the game they lost against Virginia.
06:53They had two turnovers that went for defensive scores.
06:55That's their one loss.
06:57Miami is much more consistent.
06:59Louisville doesn't run the ball very well, but they must run it.
07:02Or Reuben Bain and that Miami defense will be all over that quarterback.
07:07But I think this is a game where, you know, Miami is 4-1 against the spread.
07:12Louisville is 1-4 against the spread.
07:14Miami at home.
07:15Miami is a much more consistent football team.
07:18Better top to bottom.
07:19I've got Miami, and I'm going to take Miami to cover.
07:23Coach Terabau, no stranger.
07:24Again, as we said, the big games and also being in big environments and coaching in big
07:28environments, sometimes coaching for a new job or just coaching for the job you have.
07:31I'd love to talk to you about this game, Nebraska and Minnesota.
07:34On the field, 7.5-point spread for the road team, Nebraska Cornhuskers.
07:37But as we know, Penn State has a job open.
07:40Matt Rule said that could be his dream job.
07:43Talk to me about the distractions you have as a major-level coach when you're worried
07:47about a football game and maybe a contract at the same time.
07:51Well, hey, if you're a rule and you want to stop all the distractions, stop all the rumors,
07:56just lose this football game.
07:58They don't offer losing coaches.
08:00They offer winning coaches.
08:01So, if they play exceptionally well, that means he's thinking about that Penn State job.
08:07And they should play exceptionally well.
08:09Nebraska right now has got one loss, a tough loss that they had in their game to Michigan.
08:16Minnesota's struggling.
08:17They've lost three games to conference teams.
08:19Minnesota cannot run the football.
08:22And Nebraska is playing better football.
08:26So, right now, this is a game that, really, if Nebraska will do their job, throw the running
08:31game in.
08:32Because Minnesota gave up 253 yards rushing to Purdue.
08:37So, if Nebraska, and they will run the football, they will control the clock, and they will win
08:42the game.
08:43I'm sticking with Nebraska right now.
08:45We'll keep rules, name in the Penn State discussions.
08:48And, to be honest with you, he answered way too many questions.
08:52When you want to shut down an interview, just say, I'm not interested.
08:55He had 50 reasons why he loves Penn State in that interview, which says, man, that's way
09:01too much, too long of an answer.
09:04Yeah.
09:05All right.
09:05Well, we got another really interesting one in the SEC, coach.
09:09Georgia, one of the best run defenses.
09:12You just saw them in the country.
09:15But the problem is, Ole Miss is not interested in running into the teeth of the Georgia defense.
09:20They'll have no problem throwing the ball.
09:23I get, I think the revenge factor is overblown here.
09:27Styles make fights.
09:28Who wins this fight, coach?
09:30Well, I mean, for a lot of reasons, I think Georgia will win the fight.
09:34And I'll be honest with you, I was at the Georgia-Miami, I mean, Ole Miss game.
09:39Last year, Ole Miss was a better football team.
09:41They were more talented.
09:43They were better than Georgia.
09:44That's not the case this year.
09:46Talent level goes to Georgia.
09:48But more importantly, it's at home.
09:51And this is the quarterback, Chambliss, this is his first real away game.
09:56He got a couple of mop-up snaps at Kentucky.
09:59But he's playing in one of the toughest environments.
10:01I think the atmosphere will affect Ole Miss.
10:04I'm not going to say intimidate.
10:06I'm going to say affect it because their stadium's not real big.
10:08The noise is completely different.
10:11And the intimidation factor at Georgia is much higher.
10:16Georgia is not going to lose two home games after winning 33 straight,
10:20two home games in one year.
10:22I've got Georgia playing great.
10:23I've got them at kind of an overwhelming Ole Miss at home to win this game.
10:29Coach, we've got a playoff elimination scenario.
10:32It feels like coming up on 7.30 p.m. Saturday night.
10:34USC taking on Notre Dame as roughly a double-digit favorite.
10:38Also understand this.
10:38I want to get your idea as being a head coach.
10:40How do you prepare for a game knowing that weather and inclement weather
10:43is probably going to be there with some rain in the forecast between SC and Notre Dame?
10:48Well, you know, you can't worry about what you can't control.
10:50I think you do begin to say, okay, circle your best running plays.
10:55Circle the pass plays that you can execute.
10:58Be careful about getting too much caught up in passing.
11:01But if it's not a steady rain, you know, you qualify about six to eight footballs for every game.
11:06So you can have a dry ball.
11:08Unless it's raining heavy.
11:10I've never had a problem.
11:11And if it's a wet field, the advantage goes to the offensive receivers,
11:15not the defensive backs.
11:16Because they have to make decisions based on the offensive moves.
11:19So I wouldn't worry about it unless you've got a steady rain.
11:22I worry more about how the other team plays right now.
11:26Southern Cal's got to find a way to score points against a very good Notre Dame team.
11:31Both these teams are geared up to win.
11:33I mean, Notre Dame has only lost two teams to number two and number four.
11:37USC has lost a walk-off field goal to Illinois.
11:41They're both geared to win.
11:43But I'm going to tell you, going to Notre Dame
11:44and play in Notre Dame at home, their defense is better.
11:48They're a little more consistent.
11:49I'm going with Notre Dame to beat Southern Cal here and cover the points.
11:53I love it.
11:54A big-time weekend in college football.
11:56Big-time football Friday right here on the Sports Grid Network.
11:58And each and every Friday, we get Coach Terry Bowden here
12:01to spill some of that knowledge that we need for those games tomorrow.
12:04Coach Terry Bowden, enjoy those football games.
12:06And once again, thanks for joining us today.
12:09Thank you, man.
12:14The world is your oyster tonight, Joe Ranieri.
12:19Where are we going for those pearls of wisdom?
12:21Whew, that sounded good.
12:23Well, there's a trend here, Donnie.
12:24On Fridays, I usually go with one of these college football games.
12:28We gave you, of course, South Florida last week on a Friday.
12:32And tonight, I'm going to tell you under no certain terms, Nebraska is to play here tonight
12:38with Matt Rule, who has this unbelievable knack of taking struggling teams and programs
12:47and turning them around by year three.
12:49He did it at Temple.
12:50He did it at Baylor.
12:51And guess what this year at Nebraska is?
12:55It's his third year.
12:57And his team has been nothing but delivering here.
13:01Dominic Raiola, the quarterback, living up to all the hype.
13:05One of the better defenses as well that he has had in a very long time at Nebraska.
13:11Now, they're traveling to take on P.J. Fleck in Minnesota.
13:15Now, Minnesota is at home, Donnie.
13:16And I love this because I'm already seeing the line at around seven now because the public
13:21is starting to get involved on a Friday going, well, you can't.
13:25How is it at home?
13:26Minnesota at home?
13:27They've always had a good defense.
13:29They always deliver in this spot.
13:32Yeah, right.
13:32But that was under a former defensive coordinator called Corey Heatherman.
13:38And guess where he is now?
13:39You'll see him tonight at Hard Rock Stadium because he's the defensive coordinator for
13:44the University of Miami.
13:46And what are we left with here for Minnesota?
13:48A terrible defense, Donnie.
13:51Give me Nebraska in a route by double digits here tonight to get it done against Minnesota.
13:56Every touchdown could help Matt Rule get more money in his contract, either from Nebraska
14:00and or from Penn State here.
