00:00I saw a very interesting post today there, Craig, from our good friend Howie Rose.
00:08Remember Howie Rose?
00:09New York Mets, long time.
00:11Of course, you know Howie, right?
00:13And he put out a post today, which I remembered it the minute I read the first couple of sentences.
00:20And I think he's got a great point.
00:24But he's got a point that is lost on a lot of professional athletes and organizations these days.
00:31He brought up the point.
00:33I'll take you back because you and I were actually on air in August.
00:37And I remember this where Cooper Pratt, the phenom shortstop of the world champion, Milwaukee Brewers.
00:46Yep.
00:47He was two months into his major league career at that point.
00:50And do you remember what Pat Murphy did when he didn't run out a play, a pop-up?
00:57Oh, yeah.
00:57I do remember that.
00:58Yes.
00:59Remember that?
01:00And he pulled him in the first.
01:02I remember he sat him down in there and said, that's not how we do it here in the bigs.
01:09And he didn't tolerate it.
01:11And he made the kids sit down.
01:13And this was a rookie coming out.
01:16Look, the argument can be made, listen, that's who Pat Murphy, but that's how you establish a winning culture, which
01:24was his point, Howie Rose.
01:25I had forgotten about that.
01:27But the minute I read it, I was like, I remember you and I talked about it, where he pulled
01:32now half the people were like, oh, what are you doing?
01:35Give the kid a break.
01:36But really, did he not establish it right off the, isn't that, I mean, we haven't seen that for a
01:47very long time, have we?
01:49No, and I remember, now it's funny, I totally forgot about that.
01:52Now I remember that when Pratt hit the ball, Pratt didn't even know where it went for a minute.
01:57I remember him like looking around and then he started running and some people thought it was a little unfair.
02:02But, you know, that's sort of what tells you what's going on in a clubhouse or on a team.
02:06It's obvious to me that it wasn't an isolated incident with Pratt at that point.
02:11It seems like something else had probably happened.
02:13It's very rare for a manager all of a sudden just off that to do it.
02:16But yes, he's established it.
02:18Look, Pat Murphy is, now goes down in history.
02:22You know, like he is, you know, in a way, in terms of like popularity, he'll always have that like
02:28Joe Madden popularity.
02:29Like he brought a world, like Joe Madden brought a World Series to the Cubs and he was really good
02:33with Tampa Bay.
02:34And now Pat Murphy brought a World Series to Milwaukee.
02:37So as they say, he'll never have to buy a beer ever again in Wisconsin.
02:42But yeah, he's a very likable guy.
02:45His media sessions are different than anybody else's.
02:49Whenever you do a media session with Pat Murphy and you're sitting in the room, wherever it is, whenever it
02:54is, he looks at you.
02:56And if he doesn't know you, he says, okay, you know, what's your name?
02:59Where are you from?
03:00Tell me a little bit about yourself.
03:02What do you do?
03:02And that's rare.
03:03Like nobody really cares that much.
03:05Usually it's just you're firing off questions and answers and it ends.
03:08But it just tells you the kind of guy that he is and the character that he has.
03:12And, you know, no one's really talking about it.
03:15But I'm sure that even though he has a World Series ring with the Marlins in 1997, I'm sure Craig
03:22Council somewhere is sitting out going, that could have been me.
03:27That could have been me with that second ring with the Milwaukee Brewers.
03:32But instead he's with the Cubs.
03:36I thought it was a, I could not believe, I thought it was a great point because, again, you can,
03:42it's almost of an era bygone there, Craig, right?
03:46But you, in Major League Baseball, and you and I have had this conversation all throughout the season.
03:52Like you're, you're a guy of the mindset and I agree with you to a, to a high level here
03:57that, listen, managers don't make it there.
04:00You fire him at a great, you bring a new guy, it doesn't matter.
04:03Like they're not, they're not doing anything.
04:06They're not being a part of, they're not, you know, they control things, but they can, they come and go.
04:12And then you got situations like this where with the right group of guys, you know, I would say the
04:18Brewers took on Murphy's persona.
04:20Did they not?
04:21We see this in the NFL a lot where teams take on the persona of the head, Parcells for years,
04:27right?
04:28Belichick, you knew what kind of teams you're getting because they took on the persona of their head coach.
04:33Absolutely.
04:34I mean, this is what it kind of felt like that you, you don't get anymore in Major League Baseball.
04:40You get a, you know, a wily old coach here that this is the way we're, I don't care.
04:45This is what we're going to do.
04:47He's got enough of the young guys where he can make an impact and an impression.
04:52And he's got enough of the respect of the older guys.
04:55And you're a world champion now.
04:57I don't think that's by accident.
04:58I don't think that's by accident.
