01:48I absolutely love them

01:49And I want to talk about the book definitely

01:52So how did you know that you were going to be writing this particular book?

01:57I mean, I already kind of know a little bit

01:59But refresh my memory

02:02Well, I didn't actually write it

02:05It was written by Valery Polak

02:09Who is a Russian musician

02:11He wrote it in Russian, of course

02:15And he sent a copy of it to my father-in-law

02:19Who was a French hornist in Los Angeles

02:23They had gotten to know each other in the early days of Glastonist

02:27When the Moscow Symphony played in Los Angeles

02:31And they kept in touch

02:34So he sent Jim Decker a copy of it

02:40And Jim asked me to translate

02:41Jim knew I spoke Russian

02:46And so he asked me to translate the chapter that was about him

02:51And I did

02:52And then we decided to translate the rest of the book too

03:00That's wonderful

03:02So you were the translator from Russian to English

03:05What was that like?

03:07I mean, I know that when you translate from a different language into English

03:12We lose a lot

03:13How did you account for that?

03:16Well, I used a lot of dictionaries

03:21And it was a bit of a challenge

03:28Because I learned Russian in the Air Force

03:31And so my Russian was mostly military

03:36And, of course, musicians speak a little differently than military

03:41So it went all right

03:50I had to guess some

03:57You know what?

04:01It's so funny too

04:02Because, like, all right

04:03So there's a particular

04:04And I can't really say this on the air

04:06So excuse me

04:06I'm going to just say a particular fruit

04:08So in Puerto Rico

04:11A particular fruit is called, you know, one name

04:15And that is the fruit

04:17But in Cuba

04:18That fruit means a woman's privates

04:21So you can't say that

04:23So it's like saying fanny pack

04:26When you go to the UK

04:27Don't say that

04:28Because that is the woman's privates

04:31But here in the United States

04:33The fanny pack is a purse

04:34So, you know, so

04:37Did you encounter anything like that

04:40Where you know, okay

04:41There is absolutely no way I could say that

04:44Well, yes

04:45There was a case

04:47I translated it

04:48Throw us to the walls

04:51But the Russian was not that clean

04:54Oh, goodness

04:57Yeah, that might be a problem

05:00So, my gosh

05:04This particular person was born in 1918

05:08He learned music from his mother very early

05:11How did you

05:13I mean, you know

05:14Did you have to kind of account for the translation?

05:18Did you have to kind of fill in the gaps at times?

05:22No, they were fairly clear

05:24My guessing was mainly on the names of some of the songs

05:29That he was talking about

05:34Because they're, of course, completely different

05:38Than what we hear in English

05:40But

05:41Yeah

05:41Yeah, his mother

05:45Made sure he got to hear a lot of free concerts

05:51And things like that

05:52And developed his interest in music

05:55So, when he got older

05:57He was able to get into a band

06:02And then turn that into working with the French horn

06:06That is so cool

06:09And when he got good enough

06:12He applied at a music school

06:14And got accepted

06:17And he was pretty excited about that

06:21He learned a lot there

06:27One of the things they had him do

06:29Was change his mouthpiece

06:33Or change the position of his mouth on the mouthpiece

06:38My father-in-law said that this is a problem

06:42For some French horn players

06:44To get the right position on their mouth

06:48They even had a special mouthpiece

06:55To help them do it

06:58There's a special wide piece

07:01So they could just kind of float around a little bit

07:05And get the right space

07:07But anyway

07:08So he got better and better

07:12Started playing with music groups

07:18An ensemble

07:20Some symphonic work

07:24He played with something called the Radio Symphony

07:27This was in the days before

07:30There were tape recordings

07:33So I imagine they were playing live music

07:37Over the radio

07:37And he was doing some recording

07:43For the old 78 RPMs

07:47Which is kind of a challenge

07:50Because you have to compress

07:53These classical musics

07:55To fit the time limit

07:57On a 78 RPM

07:59Which is really not long

08:02I don't know

08:03Seven or eight minutes

08:04Something like that

08:05Yeah

08:07Wow

08:09Okay so when you translate a book

08:12Or when you translate this book in particular

08:14Was it like as if you were writing it yourself

08:19Because you had to translate it

08:20And what did that make you feel like
