00:20Inspiration flowin' just like the breeze
00:23Chase your dreams and feel at ease
00:30Be good, be very good
00:35Hey guys, it's me, Yaya Diamond
00:37What's up, peoples? How you doin'?
00:39This is a great day and I'm so very excited to be here
00:42Yes! Alright, we have an author
00:44Duh! I mean, come on! Authors, musicians, people going after their dreams, their hopes, their businesses, finances
00:50All the good stuff is right here on Dream Chasers
00:53Why? Because we are chasing our dreams until we get put six feet under
00:57I know that sounds morbid, but that's the truth, right?
01:00You have to live your life
01:02We want to inspire you to do that
01:04And that's what we're doing today
01:06By bringing you a children's author
01:08I mean, come on
01:09What is the next generation gonna do?
01:11They're going to learn
01:12And they're gonna learn from us
01:14And we have to be the catalyst by which they learn
01:17And that is what Keith Garrity is doing
01:19And I want to welcome him to the show
01:21Thank you so much for joining us
01:23Great, thank you for having me, Yaya
01:26No problem, I know
01:28Too much coffee, it's just
01:30It's okay
01:31It was wonderful, thank you for having me on
01:34Thank you
01:35I did tell you I had too much coffee
01:37So, we have water to, you know, dilute all of that
01:41But I wanted to find out what inspired you to start writing children's books instead of for like a general audience or adults or things like that
01:49Well, how did that happen?
01:51Well, I've always had a big imagination growing up and I love to be creative
01:56I've always been drawn to genres such as like sci-fi or fantasy when I was young
02:02And my parents used to read me books such as like the Berenstain Bears or the Smurfs, Barbara Popper, the Critters, those types of books back in the day
02:12And it just really appreciated, you know, the value that some others brought, you know, such as like family values and learning lessons and adventures that they did together
02:23So, you know, that safety, kindness, adventure aspect, I really appreciated and loved
02:29And I continued to read as I got older, fictional pieces such as like, you know, additional horror, sci-fi, adventure books as well
02:38And I found that those kept my imagination going
02:42I've always had a huge imagination when I was a kid and still today I've always had that creative bug to come up with different things and different ideas
02:52Wow
02:53And that, yeah, so back in the, just aside, back in the 80s and 90s, I believe it was a lot harder to get your, as far as writing
03:04To get your story out there, just because we didn't have the platforms and such today that we do
03:10You know, the marketing, you were looking at, you know, you had to buy your own books to sell them
03:15Or, you know, the publishing was hard, you had to go through the publishing companies directly themselves
03:23Yeah
03:24Whereas today you have a lot of opportunity through independence and a lot of websites for sales and marketing like Amazon
03:30And some great avenues for, you know, getting to know the authors such as your channel, which is wonderful
03:36And I appreciate new artists up and coming, so thank you for that
03:40Oh, I love this, this, I love this, this is amazing
03:43So, okay, so you have your imagination
03:46I mean, most people, when they hit about 25, imagination goes down the drain
03:51Okay, mine never stopped, obviously yours didn't stop either
03:55But how did you begin to compose the characters, compose the ideas?
03:59How did you come up with that so perfectly for children?
04:02Well, it kind of like goes back to what I said previously about like, as I was growing up, you know
04:08Seeing those family situated fictional books about adventures, you know, like Berenstain Bears
04:14Even today, you got big names like Bluey or Peppa Pig and those things
04:19Which my daughter, who's seven by the way, she watched and appreciates too
04:24So, it's that, I guess that family type of situation
04:28And I wanted to use animals instead of just regular people
04:32Because it's, I just find you can get a bit more of a cartoony experience
04:36Out of, you know, animals and the way they might move
04:39Like for this example with my latest book that's coming out
04:42The Weddleworths, you know, the family of penguins, right?
04:46And just picturing them, even in the name, waddling along
04:49And so you get that little bit of cuteness or humor right out of the gate with that too, so
04:55Definitely, I love the illustration that you have here
04:58Do you, I mean, how important is the illustration to you?
05:01And do you do it yourself? Do you collaborate with illustrators?
05:05Great, thank you for bringing that up
05:07So I wanted to give a shout out to Kira Alston
05:11She is the illustrator for this, as well as my prior book
05:15I can mention it later on as well
05:17But she's a wonderful illustrator
05:19I've been working with her for all my books that I've done thus far
05:23And hopefully we'll continue to have that partnership
05:26She also has her own books and material out there as well
05:31She creates, so I invite you to check out Kira Alston
05:35If you ever get the opportunity or feel free to contact me
05:39And I'm happy to introduce you as well
05:41She's a very talented illustrator and I always look forward to working with her
05:45Well definitely, definitely, what I'm going to say is
05:47If anybody does need an illustrator, go ahead and put it in the comment section on YouTube
05:51Because that's where Keith is going to be keeping his eye out on
05:55Because all the other places, it's just too many places to look
05:57But on YouTube, if you have any questions
05:59Or you want to get in contact with the illustrator
06:01Go ahead and make a comment below
06:03He'll keep his eye out on those comments there
06:05You know, I mean, I feel like it might be hard
06:09Maybe not, I don't know
06:11But for me, it's difficult to find that medium to write for children
06:17You know, and come up with the text and the verbiage
06:21I mean, is that difficult for you?
06:23Is it easier for you?
06:25Well, like you mentioned
06:27If you're comparing a book to like, you know
06:29Your target audience being children, right?
06:31You know, the young age of, you know, toddler
06:3510, 11 or whatnot
06:37And then you got the comparison of like, maybe a teen or an adult
06:41The challenge, I guess, is with the younger children
06:44You want to, I guess the saying goes less is more in this case, right?
06:48Where you're using a lot of the illustration to tell the story
06:52And help broaden the imagination
06:55Using less words, you know, make it, you know
06:57The action across simple, simplistic enough
07:00So that the child understands what's going on
07:03Or is being read to
07:05But has that picture image to help make their imagination grow
07:08And continue the story in their head
07:10In between the pages
07:11And I think that's the thing to keep in mind
07:13Like obviously if I'm writing a chosen book
07:15I can't write anything like Conan the Barbarian style
07:19Or anything like that
07:21But yeah, it's really fun
07:23And also the thing with younger audiences too
07:25In my opinion anyways
07:27Is they're not at that age yet
07:29Where they may become jaded with overall real life stuff
07:32So their imagination is just wide open
07:34To take on an adventure, so
07:36Definitely, definitely
07:37You know, I find that it is
07:39It may be difficult for me
07:41But some other people don't have that difficulty, you know
07:44And I mean, but with your latest book
07:46And we're going to
07:47I'm going to go ahead and put that on the screen right now
07:48So that people can see it
07:50Because I know that people, you know
07:51The parents
07:52They really want to get books that
07:54Actually resonate with their children
07:56And educate them
07:58So regarding your latest book
08:00You have the Waddleworth
08:02Or Waddleworth
08:04Family, right?
08:05Yeah, Waddleworth
08:07Yeah, tongue twister
08:08Yeah, it is
08:09Do you have any specific goals
08:12You want to accomplish with this story?
08:14I do, yeah
08:16So just to start off with
08:18With the actual
08:19This particular story itself
08:21Is, you know
08:24It focuses a lot
08:25Not just on the adventure
08:26Which is the big piece of it
08:27They're in search of this snowflake garden
08:29This magical snowflake garden
08:31That it's been
08:32Along the way they meet different friends
08:33And learn different lessons together
08:35And, you know
08:36Have different fun times and tasks
08:39But also they teach
08:41You know, we try to teach a few lessons in this too
08:43About safety
08:44About the importance of
08:46Family
08:47And care
08:49And helping others too
08:50So I think that's
08:51You know, if you can get something like that
08:53In the children's book as well
08:54Besides the, you know
08:55The fun part of the story
08:57Right
08:58I think that can help kids, you know
08:59Learn a lot
09:00And still having fun, right?
09:02Yeah
09:03I think that's an important piece
09:04But my goal to answer your question though
09:05My goal is to actually
09:07Turn this into a series
09:09Like once again
09:10Going back to like
09:11The Berenstain Bears days
09:12Wow
09:13And if I can
09:14If I'm successful
09:17Continue to be successful with this series
09:19You know
09:20I already have a couple other
09:21Next stories in line
09:23For this particular family
09:24So I really like to share them
09:26And get a collection out there
09:28That's nice
09:29That's nice
09:30You know, I find that writing books
09:32I wrote only a couple
09:34And believe me
09:35I'm not looking to
09:36I don't have time to expand upon them
09:39But, you know
09:40When it comes to writing books
09:41It actually does take you to a different place
09:43In your mindset
09:45Do you find yourself like
09:47Experiencing the adventure
09:49While you're writing the adventure
09:51And laughing and stuff?
09:52Because I do
09:53And I think that's weird
09:54For me at least
09:56No, it's funny
09:57And I agree with you
09:58There's times where I'll be
10:00Writing a piece
10:01And say for example
10:04If there's a
10:05Without spoiling it too much
10:07There's a part in this book
10:08Where the family
10:10Is, you know
10:12Sliding down this ice river
10:14And on their flippers
10:16And they're just having a blast
10:17With each other
10:18And I'm thinking to myself
10:19You know, back in the days
10:20When I was a kid
10:21You know
10:22Just sliding along ice
10:23Or even going like
10:24Skidooing
10:25Or snowboarding
10:26Or whatever
10:27Skiing down a hill
10:28With my young friends
10:29And just having fun
10:30You know, falling off
10:31And rolling into each other
10:33And that sort of thing
10:34So yeah, I do think about that
10:35Sort of thing
10:36Sort of thing
10:37And also
10:38It also brings back
10:39Some memories too
10:40Right?
10:41Like, you know
10:42Having the
10:43Some wonderful parents
10:45Loving parents
10:46I grew up with
10:47In my family
10:48And having siblings as well
10:50And extended family members
10:52Having that general love
10:54You know, brings back
10:55Some different scenarios
10:57That had taken place in my life
10:58So it's comforting
11:00You know, do you find that
11:03Your imagination is growing
11:06With each moment that you write
11:09Each page you write
11:11I mean, is it really coming back to you?
11:13Are you really, really like
11:15Staying a kid in your mind
11:17Because of these books?
11:19I kind of look at it as
11:22Not necessarily a kid
11:23A kid at heart, I guess
11:24But almost put myself
11:27Like the fly on the wall
11:28So to speak
11:29Or part of the character
11:31And so for example
11:32You know, with this family
11:34If I was traveling
11:35Towards the Snowflake Garden
11:36With this family
11:37And you know
11:38With all the characters
11:39And I'm part of their
11:40And experiencing their situation
11:42I'm thinking, okay
11:43We've gotten this far
11:44Where is it going to lead to next?
11:46I kind of put myself
11:47In their flippers
11:48So to speak
11:49Yeah, so experience
11:54I mean, we're at this piece
11:55In the story now
11:56Okay, family
11:57Where are we going to go next?
11:58Right?
11:59You know, we see something
12:00Ahead up in the horizon
12:01What's going to happen
12:02When we get to that point
12:03In the story?
12:04And just kind of
12:05Using your imagination
12:06Putting yourself in the shoes
12:07And that goes back
12:08To the illustrations as well
12:10I mean, having a child
12:12See these
12:13Some of these wonderful illustrations
12:15And you know
12:16Kind of picturing
12:17Kind of picturing
12:18Okay, what's going to happen next?
12:20What would happen
12:21If I was watching
12:22A cartoon version of this?
12:23Right
12:24So I think that's
12:25It's a big part of the imagination
12:27Yeah, definitely
12:28Definitely
12:29Which character
12:30Is you in this book?
12:34I'd have
12:35Hmm
12:37If back when I was a kid
12:39I would say Pippa
12:41The inquisitive one
12:44But I would say
12:46Now being a dad myself
12:48The father
12:49Henry
12:50And you know
12:51Henry being
12:52You know
12:53Wanting to
12:54A kid at heart
12:55Wanting to take the adventure on
12:56And excited with his
12:57With his children
12:58To be able to bring that adventure on
13:00But also that caution for safety
13:02And also the opportunity
13:04To learn some things along the way
13:05Yeah
13:06Yeah
13:07I got you
13:08I got you
13:09We do change
13:10Isn't it amazing how
13:11How you change from being the kid
13:13To being the parent
13:14All in one lifetime
13:15You know
13:16When you think about your book
13:18And you think about the children
13:20That may read
13:21That may read it
13:22But what about the parents
13:23That may read it
13:24To their children
13:25What are they going to get out of this?
13:26I would hope to get a bonding experience
13:30And they can maybe relate
13:31To some of the scenarios
13:33Or the bonding that placed in the book
13:36With themselves and their family too
13:37Yeah
13:38There's
13:39You can obviously see
13:40There's a lot of love and care
13:41When you go to read this book
13:43Between the family members
13:45Yeah
13:46And also that sense of fun
13:47So you know
13:48If the parent can take away
13:49And not just from that real time
13:51Reading the book to their child
13:53And having fun
13:54And watching their imagination run loose
13:56But also saying
13:57Hey you know
13:58Johnny or Susie
13:59This kind of reminds me
14:00That time when we went to the park
14:02And you know
14:03Went skating
14:04Or you know
14:06We were talking about safety
14:07Or you know
14:09Just spending some time at home
14:10Watching a TV show
14:11But all cuddle up
14:12On our warm little blankets
14:13Right?
14:14That sort of thing
14:15So real time relating
14:16But also enjoying in the moment
14:17Right?
14:18Because
14:19Yeah
14:20Wow wow
14:21Well you do have your website
14:22So it's KeithGarrity.com
14:25I have that below
14:26Over there
14:27Underneath you
14:28Okay
14:29But also where can people
14:30Find this book?
14:31Yeah
14:32So this particular book
14:34Is tended to be released
14:35In late November
14:37Okay
14:38So this one
14:39Along with my prior book
14:41My Puppy Buddy Dougie
14:43Is
14:44Can be also found on
14:45Amazon.com
14:47Amazon.ca
14:48Amazon.uk
14:50Can also be found in Barnes & Noble
14:51Wal-Mart U.S.
14:53As well as the
14:56Friesian Press Bookstore
14:58Indigo Books
15:00Are some of the main ones
15:02As well as additional
15:03Supporting bookstores
15:04Online
15:05If you do a search
15:06Awesome
15:07And if you have any questions
15:08Or concerns
15:09Or confusion
15:10Just go to his website
15:11For sure
15:12Yeah
15:13We look forward to hearing
15:14Any kind of feedback
15:15Or it's always nice to hear
15:17From the fans
15:18And you know
15:20Answer any questions
15:21They might have
15:22Maybe perhaps promote
15:23A great idea
15:24That could be used
15:25In a future book
15:26So
15:27Definitely
15:28Definitely
15:29What kind of advice
15:30Do you give to people
15:31That want to write a book
15:32Or they want to do children's books
15:34Because I think
15:35Writing children's books
15:36Is a little bit different
15:37Than writing for teenagers
15:39And so on and so forth
15:40Well I think the first thing
15:42You want to do is
15:43You know
15:46Go for it
15:47That's half the battle there
15:48Right
15:49I always grew up
15:50With the saying
15:51That half the battle
15:52Is just putting your sneakers on
15:53Right
15:54And getting ready to run
15:55And then actually doing it
15:56So just having that mindset
15:57That you can do it
15:58And just do it
15:59Right
16:00Don't be afraid
16:01You know
16:02If you've got to pick at it
16:03Right
16:04Because there's been some projects
16:05In the past I've done
16:06Where I've picked out it here and there
16:07But I've always went back to it
16:08Right
16:09Goal mindset
16:10First
16:11And then as far as
16:12The actual process itself
16:13Talking about
16:14What I was speaking of earlier
16:16About the challenges back
16:17That would happen back
16:18In like the 80s
16:19And early 90s
16:2070s
16:21And so on
16:22Of not having the avenues
16:23That we have now
16:24For platforms
16:25It makes it a lot easier
16:26And it's attainable
16:27Right
16:28Whether you want to self-publish
16:29Or do a hybrid publisher
16:31Or still work with the classical
16:32Publishing companies
16:34It's
16:35You've got so many different options
16:36There's so many talented people out there
16:38For illustration
16:39And
16:40And you know
16:41Editing
16:42And such like that
16:44That can help
16:45And then the marketing
16:46Is very
16:47Open as well
16:48You know
16:49You can direct Amazon marketing
16:51Or other folks
16:52Online
16:53That can help you market
16:54There's just so many
16:55And with AI too
16:56Coming out now
16:57Yeah
16:58That broads the scale even more
17:00Right
17:01So it's so much easier
17:02Yeah
17:03Don't be afraid to do it
17:04Is my best advice
17:05And also know your audience too
17:07Earlier
17:08You know
17:09We were talking about
17:10The difference between
17:11Adult books
17:12Or teenager books
17:13And kids books
17:15Yeah
17:16Yeah
17:17Put yourself in the kids shoes
17:18Remember
17:19They got the big imagination
17:20And if it's
17:21Especially for a younger
17:22Children audience
17:23You know
17:24The pictures will do more
17:25The storytelling for you
17:26Than the words
17:27Most times
17:28Definitely
17:29Definitely
17:30Well Keith
17:31Thank you so much
17:32For being on the show
17:33Is there anything
17:34That we missed today
17:35You'd like to say
17:36No I just want to say
17:37Thank you for having me today
17:38Guy
17:39It was wonderful
17:40Being on your show
17:41I really appreciate
17:42Platforms such as yourself
17:43To help artists out
17:44Like myself
17:45To share our talents
17:48And get exposed
17:50To share our ideas
17:52With other folks
17:53So thank you for having me
17:54Oh well thank you
17:55For being on
17:56Because I wouldn't have a show
17:57If it wasn't for you guys
17:58He's sitting here all by myself
18:00What am I going to say
18:01Right?
18:02Oh please
18:03But thank you so much
18:04Keith for being on the show
18:05Listen guys
18:06Wherever you may be watching
18:07All of the information
18:08Is going to be
18:09In the description box
18:10Wherever that may be
18:11And on different platforms
18:13It can be anywhere
18:14However
18:15On YouTube
18:16If you need to make
18:17A comment
18:18Or a suggestion
18:19Or even a question
18:20That you have
18:21Keith is going to be
18:22Watching that
18:23And I'm going to give
18:24I'm going to make sure
18:25He has that link
18:26So he can keep his eye out
18:27So if you have any questions
18:28On YouTube only
18:29Please keep it
18:30To YouTube
18:31Ask your question
18:32In YouTube below
18:33And he will get
18:34Right back with you
18:35I'm not going to answer
18:36Any questions
18:37Because it's not my book
18:38But definitely
18:39Definitely you guys
18:40Want to go ahead
18:41The book of
18:43I'm going to say
18:44I'm going to say this right
18:45Wattleworth Family
18:46Big Adventure
18:47I think I said it right
18:48Yay
18:49You got it
18:50Wow
18:51I'm so used to saying
18:52Worth
18:53W-O-R
18:54That is W-E-R
18:56And so that kind of
18:57Drew me off a little bit
18:58But there you go
18:59I mean uniqueness
19:00The titles
19:01All of that stuff
19:02Makes a big difference
19:03And that's
19:04That's just wonderful
