00:39Hi guys, this is Yaya Diamond and I have a shoutout
00:43It's a shoutout, I have to play the shoutout
00:45Your effort shines brighter than the stars
00:50Lighting up the top no matter how far
00:55You know, I work very hard on this stuff
00:58I really do, I work very hard on all of these introductions
01:01Because I am having an amazing time
01:04And today we're going to be talking about the 5 Deadly Sins of Hollywood Remakes
01:08But most of all we're going to be talking about
01:11Mr. Marcus Bolander
01:13And his blog on Medium, which I already follow
01:16Hello, so let's just go ahead and I want to show you this blog
01:20So this here, he really goes into depth about this right here
01:27It's about all of the, you know, the children's remakes and stuff like that
01:32I mean, listen to me when I tell you, okay
01:35I'm going to tell you right now
01:37That the children's remakes are amazing
01:39They are, I'm not going to take it from them
01:42They're going to, they're okay, they're great, okay
01:46And I really do enjoy the movies, I really do
01:48But when I pick up the book and I read it
01:50It's like it's nothing like the book
01:52It's like really, really, super really
01:55That you're going to do this to me
01:57With taking out the most important parts of the story
02:02Listen, I would rather, I don't know, maybe not
02:07They do too many episodes too
02:10It's like a too many, you know, like part one and part two and part five and part 54
02:15And you know, you got this, this, it's just, it's too much
02:19It really is too much
02:21I think people should encourage reading the book before the actual movie comes out
02:26But that is just me
02:28Because you get the full picture with the book
02:30But Hollywood has taken it out
02:33And it has really, truly hidden it from us
02:39Okay, so he's talking about this
02:41He's talking about the systemic rejection of an entire category of filmmaking
02:46Which is, 91% of remakes receive lower audience scores than their originals
02:53Okay, and the irony is, is that some of these remakes are actually better than the originals
02:59Which is okay, but it still doesn't give me the whole picture
03:05Okay, so wait, okay
03:06If for any remake could break through the wall of generational skepticism
03:10It should have been dread 2012, right?
03:13It had everything going forward
03:15Karl Urban's pitch perfect performance that never removed his helmet
03:19Alex Garland's faithful script
03:22And the action sequence that made Stallone's 1995 version look like a Saturday morning cartoon
03:30Credits loved it and fans who saw it, they loved it
03:34But it bombed!
03:35Earning just $41 million worldwide against the $45 million budget
03:40They lost $4 million dollars
03:46It wasn't even a game
03:48It wasn't even a game
03:50And you know, when the movies go on video
03:53The actual main characters don't get any money anymore
03:56I'm gonna let you know that the other actors get that money
04:01So they lost
04:02They lost a lot
04:04$4 million dollars
04:07It cost them $41 million dollars to make a movie
04:11Okay, let me just, let me stop, let me stop
04:14I wanted to get into this
04:16This article really, really opened my eyes, okay?
04:19You have the expectation trap where Karl Urban was cast as Judge Dredd
04:25He wasn't just competing against Sylvester Stallone's performance
04:28He was competing against decades of fans' expectations, nostalgic memories
04:33And the impossible standard of childhood wonder
04:37They didn't want a better version
04:40But they did want to see what he would do
04:45And it was better
04:47I'm sorry, it was better
04:48But psychologically
04:49The psychological phenomenon is well documented
04:55We encounter remakes of beloved properties
04:59Our brains immediately activate researchers called nostalgist bias
05:04So we are going back into nostalgia
05:07We're going back into, you know, what we remember to be like
05:11Oh, my childhood movie
05:13Oh my gosh, I really love this movie
05:15And they're remaking it
05:16Let's see what it is
05:17So it takes you back to that nostalgia
05:20It takes you back to that moment in time
05:22That when this movie was so cool
05:24And so prevalent in your life
05:26You remember where you were when you first saw this movie
05:29But then they make it over again
05:33And why do they do that?
05:36Let's go back
05:37I have to read this
05:38Why do they do that?
05:39Why are they doing that?
05:40And you know what?
05:41My guy right here
05:43His name again is Marcus Bolander
05:45He knows
05:46He's telling us
05:47But studios consistently underestimate this emotional baggage
05:51They cast talented unknowns like Urban or Colin Farrell
05:56Against legends like Stallone and Schwarzenegger
05:58Who act surprised when their audiences reject the upgrade
06:03Yeah
06:04So, listen
06:06I don't mind when they make a new movie
06:10But it's like the Karate Kid
06:13You know
06:14Or it's like, you know
06:16A lot of different movies they have out there
06:18You know, Rocky always played Rocky
06:20Rocky
06:21Rocky always played Rocky
06:22You know
06:23You have
06:24Speed
06:25You know
06:26What was it?
06:27The
06:28The
06:29The
06:30The franchise
06:31Where they're driving the cars and everything
06:32I forgot what the name of that movie was
06:34But
06:35Literally speaking
06:36The same actors
06:37People want to see the same actors
06:39Maybe not
06:40Doing the same roles that they used to do
06:42When they got
06:43You know
06:44If they got old
06:45But definitely still being a part of that movie
06:47The nostalgia is there
06:49But they just
06:50Hollywood just takes the role and gives it to somebody else
06:53And I don't know if I like it or not
06:56Well, let's go back
06:57We're talking about this
06:58We're talking about the roles
06:59We're talking about
07:00What my guy Marcus Bolander has said
07:03And he not only has said this
07:06But if you go back into his blog
07:11He's got marketing one by one for startups
07:14Welcome to Flanders Paradox
07:16Black Belt and Mental Self-Defense
07:19The nine books that make you manipulation proof
07:23What?
07:24The death of soulless creativity
07:26The east that isn't there
07:28On maps
07:29Minds
07:30And moral creativity
07:31I'm sorry
07:32And moral certainty
07:34The inevitable betrayal
07:36Why groups always become
07:38What they once opposed
07:40Hello
07:41And so on and so forth
07:43This guy has a lot of different articles
07:45That you probably would want to go ahead
07:47And follow him on Medium
07:49If you don't have a Medium account
07:50You should have a Medium account
07:52I do
07:53And I absolutely love my Medium account

07:56And so many different articles out there

08:04Go ahead and scan the QR code
08:07That I have right here
08:09That's that QR code
08:10Scan that QR code

08:15And check out his blog there
08:17I'm going to put that information
08:18In the description box below
08:20So it'll be easy for you to find
08:21But what I found
08:23Was that nostalgia piece
08:25That he did
08:26That was just amazing
08:27And I thought that
08:28He was right on point
08:30He was right on point
08:32And I do believe
08:33If I am not mistaken
08:35That there are other people
08:36That do believe
08:37That he was on point as well
08:39And other outlets
08:42That believe that he was on point as well
08:46And I want to thank you guys
