01:22And we're going to go ahead and get into it

01:41We're going to get into that a little bit later on

01:43But I wanted to find out

01:45When was that moment that you knew?

01:48Like I said to myself when I was young

01:50I'm not writing no book

01:51That's for old people

01:52You know

01:53I find that I'm not old

01:57And I do love

02:01And I admire people who do

02:04When did this start for you?

02:06Right

02:07So I have always enjoyed writing

02:09But it certainly took a turn for me

02:13I have not published any other works before

02:17It took a turn for me in about in 2022

02:20When I had a story

02:24A storyline sort of rumbling around

02:26In the back of my head

02:27And it was the story of an ICU nurse

02:31Who was working in the pandemic

02:36In the first year of COVID-19

02:37I myself am a healthcare worker

02:40And have experienced what it was like

02:44To be a part of the emergence of COVID-19

02:47In the hospital setting

02:49And basically what I wanted to do

02:54Is to stop having her haunt me

02:56I really wanted to be able to write

03:00So I write it down

03:02Create the story

03:03But I don't have any creative writing background

03:06Other than college courses that I've taken

03:08And so I went ahead

03:10And I got some different books

03:12That laid out how I could structure a novel

03:15But what was very interesting

03:18Is beyond just putting the plot together

03:20Learning a couple tips and tricks

03:23From those books

03:24The story was driving itself

03:27And it really wrote itself

03:29Over the course of nine months

03:31I wrote every day

03:33Maybe one to two pages

03:35And I felt like I had to try to keep up

03:38Keep up with the story that was within me

03:41That just desperately wanted to be created

03:43Wow, wow

03:44You know, a lot of people told me that

03:46Especially during COVID

03:47COVID was like one of those times

03:48That never really happened

03:49Like in a hundred years

03:50We had the

03:52What was it?

03:53The flu?

03:54What was it?

03:55Yeah, the Spanish flu

03:56Right, right

03:58Until we had COVID

04:01So we personally went through

04:03A non-existent existence

04:05Where we were living

04:08But we were all inside the house

04:10And so I think a lot of people

04:12Were thinking of different things

04:14That they always wanted to do

04:15But they never did

04:17During that time

04:20Was this when she started to haunt you?

04:23Yes

04:23Probably towards the end of 2020

04:272020 for me

04:29Was a really intense time

04:30And I pretty much put my

04:33One foot in step of the other

04:35To get through that year

04:36And when I came out of it

04:38I realized that there was a lot of things

04:42That I had kind of not been able to describe

04:45Or speak about with others

04:46And so this story I think

04:49Was almost this disassociative way

04:51Of processing perhaps some of the pain

04:55That I was carrying through fiction

04:57But being able to name that pain

05:01And to describe the indescribable

05:03Was much of what I experienced

05:06Coming out of the pandemic

05:08And trying to find healing

05:10In that process

05:11Wow

05:11So March Reigns

05:13Is the title of the book

05:15And so did you expect this

05:17To be your first novel?

05:19I mean a novel

05:19To come out the gate with a novel

05:21That's a big thing

05:23I mean also did it change your writing?

05:25Did it change you?

05:26I mean how do you

05:27Before and after

05:29How do you perceive yourself now

05:30As a published novelist?

05:34It's shocking to me

05:37You know it was a story

05:41That I felt and truly believed

05:43Was needing to be created

05:46And the process of writing it

05:49Was so humbling

05:50Because it was like

05:51It was a story that was already told

05:53That needed to then just be actuated

05:55And so it transformed me in many ways

05:58One you know from non-author

06:01To now to being an author

06:03But in more profound ways

06:06I think there was a lot of healing

06:09In being able to process

06:11Some of the really gritty things

06:14That happened in the COVID-19 pandemic

06:17To patients who were suffering

06:21And to healthcare workers

06:23Who were sacrificing daily

06:25To save them

06:26And the degree of isolation

06:29And perhaps trauma

06:33That people went through

06:34Was so significant

06:36And so for me

06:37In sort of grappling with that

06:40And then making something beautiful

06:42Out of it

06:43Something that was difficult

06:45And turning that pain

06:47Into something that is creative

06:48And hopeful

06:50And something that I hope

06:52That will be shared with the world

06:54Has been an honor

06:57To just be able to do that

06:59And so yeah

07:01I am in awe of the process

07:03And grateful for having been able

07:06To go through it

07:07And to be able to create this

07:08Wow

07:45And so there's a lot

07:46Of selflessness

07:47And a lot of duty

07:48That she experienced

07:49And I can see myself

07:51In that

07:51Just in my work

07:55In my day job

07:57But what she went through

08:00Was perhaps

08:01Some of my worst fears

08:02At the time

08:03And so I was able

08:05And so I was able

08:05To describe

08:07An internal world

08:09And an external world

08:10And the interplay

08:11Between it

08:13As Grace navigates

08:16In a way

08:18Somehow a way

08:20To process

08:20What I know

08:21That many people

08:22Have experienced

08:23Throughout the

08:25COVID-19 pandemic

08:35Into her plotline

08:36But she takes

08:37A lot of turns

08:38And yeah

08:40It was

08:41She is not me

08:43But there are

08:44A lot of visceral

08:45Pieces of her process

08:46And her experience

08:52From my own experiences
