00:00let's start off with major league baseball an anomaly last night something that you never see
00:05anymore in the postseason a starting pitcher through nine innings in a major league baseball
00:12game a complete game yes this actually happened in milwaukee yoshinobi yamamoto complete game one
00:18earned run a leadoff home run to jackson churio i was watching that thinking oh my gosh milwaukee
00:23may win this game and then yamamoto just shut them down the rest of the game max muncie also
00:27hit a home run in this one and yeah i mean the dodgers who were having all kinds of issues
00:33finding starting pitching throughout the regular season have had no issue whatsoever in the post
00:38season seemingly all these guys coming through and by the way they haven't even used shohei otani yet
00:42in the series his debut in the nlcs is yet to come as they go back to la here are dave roberts and max
00:50muncie talking about going up to oh in the series um well i think if you look at the construction of
00:56our roster currently um you know the strength is starting pitching and you know when you can have
01:05your most talented pitchers uh get the most outs then you're in a good spot and uh right now you know
01:13all four of those guys are in a really good headspace physically they're sound and um you know you feel
01:19good about those guys starting a game and pushing them and they're prepared for this
01:22that's a tough question man um i mean blake's night was pretty historic and then uh you know
01:30yoshi finished the game um you know both equally incredible um you know the thing that stood out
01:36most to me was yoshi giving up the leadoff homer and then that really being the only damage all game
01:41long that was pretty impressive and you know he found a way to go through some innings there and
01:46uh you know there's a couple innings where he lost the command a little bit and still found a way to
01:50navigate around that so they're they're both equally impressive i don't know which one you'd rather pick
01:55but you know i guess technically yoshi finished the game so what once he is now the dodgers all-time
02:02home run leader in the postseason passing justin turner and cory seager meanwhile the brewers had a
02:08hard time putting the ball in play yesterday against the amamoto pat murphy the head the manager of the
02:14brewers giving credit to the dodgers pitching but also saying that his team's got to make better
02:18swing decisions um i mean they were both great you know both those pitchers were as dominant as two
02:24pitchers have been um you know we chased way more than than we've chased uh all year we've been the
02:31best in baseball at not chasing uh these pitchers brought out the worst in us um yeah
02:38yeah if i would have told you that the dodgers are going to score seven runs in two games
02:44and what was the outcome in the first two games i'd say there's a chance we won one of them for sure
02:49yeah i mean we just got to play better um you know it's not ideal start to the series by any means
02:55like it's not what you want to get off to but it's got to continue to battle and um
03:01you know find a way to get the offense going you know i gotta be better we gotta be better just
03:07facts you know um so fly out tonight take the off day tomorrow and um be ready to battle game three
03:15mariners are favored tonight in game three as they should be they're playing in the pacific northwest
03:22against the toronto blue jays and if they win they go up 3-0 in the series george kirby
03:26will start for seattle and shane bieber makes his start for the blue jays tonight in the alcs
03:33coverage tonight on game time decisions and in game live of this game now over to the nfl it's been
03:40a wild season of teams that we expected to be phenomenal not so much jerry jones in particular
03:47not quite ready to concede the season the dallas cowboys by the way are two three and one on the
03:54year jerry jones who did not talk after the last game made his way to the microphone to say that he
03:59is still fighting and uh we'll get some but uh still uh uh the i've i see so much parody
04:10and then you factor in that these teams get compromised with uh injury and we can have
04:18and may but if we should have some good go of it here over the next weeks ahead with our injury
04:27situation in return of injury and we can uh get some wins uh then this thing uh with dac playing the
04:34way he's playing and uh uh with um the way some of the guys have played that are playing with these
04:41guys out right now i'm encouraged i'm encouraged the last thing that i'm thinking about is uh in any way
04:48being out of the hunt dallas cowboys two three and one are in the hunt in the nfc meanwhile the
04:55battle of the old guys at quarterback this week aaron rogers and joe flacco the matchup of two
05:00quarterbacks in their 40s tom brady versus jew breeze was the only matchup where both starting
05:05quarterbacks were in their 40s but here we go it is aaron rogers and flacco both talked to the media
05:11about getting up there in age and facing off yeah i think it's great uh great for all the old guys you
05:18know i know that when i watch other sports maybe it's because i'm the older guy but i i tend to
05:23to pull for the older guys to to win to win championships i'm i've been friends with steph for a long
05:30time steph is one of the older guys in the nba now so anytime the warriors are playing i'm always
05:34pulling for steph to ball out for them for them to win but uh it's great i mean i've known joe for a
05:41long time uh he's been great coming to my charity event uh he's been a great ambassador for the league
05:47he's had a great career and it's fun that we're both still playing have you thought about how unique
05:52that aspect is the fact that the two quarterbacks in the game are combined over 80 years old has it
05:58happened before i'm sure there's been some old guys brady and breeze yeah uh yeah you know it's one of
06:06those things when i'm in a lot i've been in a locker room my whole life uh so it you know age isn't
06:11something that i think about i just view myself as one of those 20 something year olds in the locker room
06:16and um so it's not something i really think about uh but i think one day when you look back on it it's
06:22just one of those things that'll be pretty cool to be able to you know have a matchup like this
06:26at least for now it looks like bill belichick's tenure in north carolina does continue he calls
06:31rumors of the exit from north carolina looking for a buyout completely false at the press conference this
06:37week all right so um i'll just start with uh you know right off the bat like just the some of the
06:44reports out last week about uh am i looking for a buyout and trying to leave here and all that
06:49it's just categorically false there's zero truth to any of that um uh glad i'm here um we're working
06:56towards uh you know our goals and and the process um had great support from uh you know chancellor
07:02roberts um and above of steve um and so forth you know mike and barry it's been um you know those
07:10people have all been great and i appreciate all their help and everything and you know we just
07:14believe very much in in the process um like bill walsh said you know the score will take care of itself
07:18and i've always believed that um you just got to keep working and grinding away and that's
07:23that's exactly what we're doing so pat craft the athletic director meanwhile at penn state
07:29university yesterday met with the media and said that james franklin losing in a lot of big games
07:35played a role in his firing also texas a m's great running back levion moss gonna miss significant time
07:41the aggies have gotten six touchdowns and almost 400 yards on the ground from him welcome back to
07:46newswire here on sports grid we got sam mcquillen in the house and guess what we're gonna be talking
07:51about prediction markets right if i had to make a prediction on the prediction market if if newswire
07:57was going to be talking about prediction markets i we'd be making a lot of money sam it feels like
08:01it's a daily occurrence here welcome back to newswire here and boy isn't this an interesting
08:06one flutter the parent company of fanduel seemingly if you can't beat them join them that must be the
08:12conversation here if they get involved in this isn't it yeah flutter uh the parent company that
08:19owns fanduel first made waves in this kind of space uh back in august when they announced a
08:23partnership with this company called cme group which would allow them to have these financial
08:28markets uh for their fanduel customers so these are things historically that calci and everybody else
08:34has offered the you know markets on election uh the economy you know the weather even uh but at the
08:41time they did not say they were getting into sports kind of trying to toe that line and you know not
08:46piss anybody off now coming out of the global gaming expo conference uh in las vegas this past week
08:52flutter met with several uh wall street analysts to kind of give them an overview of where they're
08:57headed uh and in two notes those analysts indicated that flutter's actually getting ready to launch a
09:03sports version of that market uh later this year so uh no surprise that they would eventually get into
09:08sports but it is news that they would do it so soon so quickly and it comes as a number of states
09:15ohio arizona and now more right here in the coming weeks are telling companies like fanduel hey if
09:21you're a licensed sports book with us like you start offering these sports prediction markets which
09:25again a lot of people have said basically are just a version of unlicensed sports betting if you offer
09:30them in any state it could put your license in jeopardy in our state so um this would be the first
09:35kind of big domino to drop with a sports book actually getting involved with a prediction market
09:40you know a way to reach states like california where they are not allowed to do sports betting
09:44states like texas georgia as well and we've already seen some others in the space like
09:49underdog fantasy which is not very much a sports betting company but does have a fantasy sports
09:54product they've already gotten in this space as well so um you know fanduel being the you know
09:59market leader in sports betting the biggest sports betting company jumping into this space
10:02would definitely be some very big news and on top of that calci who i'm seeing by the way
10:09advertising a lot now on social media on a lot of the different channels i had never seen that
10:14before i'm starting to see it a lot more it seems like they have their foot on the pedal at this
10:19point and clearly the way that the market sees calci is a growing company isn't it
10:24yeah it's no coincidence that you're starting to notice more calci advertisements often at times by
10:31the way explicitly saying that what they're doing is sports betting but for legal reasons they can do
10:36it so you don't have to worry if you're in a state like california or texas but calci now valued at
10:41five billion dollars uh after this new funding round it just had this past week which is really
10:47interesting because that's six times what it was worth just a year ago before it started offering
10:52sports prediction markets back then it only took about 20 million dollars in volume a month on those
10:58kind of you know novelty markets now it takes about a billion dollars in trading volume a month with
11:03you know the majority being on sports the company says it's grown a hundred times over the past year
11:08multiplied its user base by 50 uh and it's expecting to do um you know even higher numbers
11:14in the coming months it wants to launch more markets uh all over the world as well to not
11:18just have these sports prediction markets in the u.s where they're doing most of their business in
11:22these states where sports betting isn't legal but in other countries around the world where
11:26it'll allow them the same advantages of you know skirting taxes not having to pay license fees not
11:31having to really answer to anybody it's overseen by the cftc which has so far not done anything in
11:37this space and it's pretty telling that they are raising a ton of money from wall street again
11:42six times what it was worth just a year ago uh now about 3.3 billion dollars in volume over the past 30
11:50days um most of it all being on sports only a little bit on the economy and politics so it's no
11:55surprise that as sports which we know americans love to bet on as that continues to boom the company
12:00and its valuation continues to boom as well people now kind of looking at it as a sports betting company
12:05versus just a prediction market company california and texas are the two markets that will probably
12:11benefit the most from cal sheet because there is no legalized sports betting and sam it looks like
12:16the future for california is even murkier not that there's any sports betting discussion going on right
12:21now but sweepstakes discussion and contests are being put out there and if those can't be passed
12:27through or made illegal i don't see sports happening anytime soon yeah definitely not sweepstakes is very
12:33similar to that sports prediction market conversation which you know another industry that is kind of
12:38regulated a certain way to not be governed or regulated as sports betting you know these online
12:45casinos or online sports books that will have two forms of currency you can play with uh one you buy
12:52and when you buy that one currency you then get a free version of that currency which or you're gifted
12:58by the company which you can then use to play slots casino games bet on sports and in turn if you win
13:05on that then you get paid out real money so you know a mechanism to kind of use a third party or a
13:10middleman where it's not technically sports betting and that's been one of the reasons it's been such
13:15a popular new kind of vertical uh in this space to reach states you mentioned like california where
13:20there isn't sports betting but unfortunately for those companies it's being cracked down on and it's much
13:25easier to crack down on this than it is to do prediction markets which you know is tied up in the courts
13:30there's the feds involved you know california just this week passed a bill uh that was signed by uh
13:35governor gavin newsom that officially makes these uh types of sweepstakes models illegal in california
13:41by january 1st which i think is pretty telling that they they're still fighting the sports prediction
13:46industry they're still fighting the daily fantasy sports industry which you know the attorney general
13:51has come out and said this is sports betting but those companies continue to operate they were
13:55really able to kind of effectively just eradicate sweepstakes in the space and that comes from a lot
14:00of the same reason that sports betting hasn't been legalized yet it's the state's native tribes which
14:04hold a tremendous power over the um over gaming in the state and influence in the legislature they came
14:11out really hard against sweepstakes casinos and they were able to get uh the entire legislature to vote
14:16unanimously to ban them and then the governor also on board to sign them so uh sweepstakes dying in
14:23california but you still have sports predictions you still have fantasy sports in the meantime and who
14:27knows when sports betting will ever get there sam great stuff as always thanks again for coming on
14:32newswire we'll catch up again later in the week thanks again yeah you too thanks greg sam
14:38mcquillett with legal sports report joining us now all the things we discuss and all the columns you
14:42can find over at legal sports report dot com meanwhile as we mentioned penn state finally
14:48discussed why james franklin was fired it took a few days but their athletic director pat craft met
14:56with the media yesterday and basically discussed some of the potential reasons why franklin was let go
15:04i feel like we got some answers maybe we didn't get them all and i feel i still feel like franklin's
15:09going to speak at some point and we'll get to know more but here is a craft basically saying that he
15:15was going to sleep on the decision over the weekend but decided inevitably the loss to northwestern was
15:20the end of franklin at penn state i was going to sleep on it on sunday and um but i i knew it was the
15:28right course of action for us as a program and uh more importantly for the team um so that that's kind
15:35how it transpired um you know you take data right you this is not a just this is not a three game thing
15:44this is really diving into where we were as a program what is the trajectory of this program
15:49um and and you all know and i'm not shy to admit it i'm i'm here to win national championship
15:55and i believe our fans deserve that and uh i wake up every day trying to achieve that goal so
16:02long-winded answer rich that that was it was kind of on a sunday hey this is this is probably the time
16:09we'll figure out who penn state's next coach is going to be over the next couple of months all right
16:13nba season getting ready to get underway we're a little bit over a week away from that the nba
16:19news cycle is now hitting mavericks have signed jason kidd their head coach to a multi-year contract
16:25extension so he will be there for at least a couple of more years yannis entered to campo said that he wants to
16:30play in greece after his career ends which hopefully is not this year or next and also the phoenix suns
16:37jalen green is going to be re-evaluated in 10 days that is going to miss the season opener against the
16:43los angeles kings also eric spolstra was named the head coach of team usa for the olympics that
16:49happened officially yesterday as well
