00:00As I mentioned, we got a big story here percolating out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
00:04where the Phillies have made a managerial change.
00:07Second team in less than a week to do so.
00:09Rob Thompson is out.
00:12And Don Mattingly is taking over as interim coach.
00:15Thompson had a really good record managing the Phillies.
00:17Never got him a World Series, but .355 and .270.
00:21That was his overall record.
00:23Made the postseason every year.
00:25Just never got him quite over the top.
00:26And then this season, the Phillies started off 9-19.
00:30USA Today also reporting that Alex Cora was offered the job to manage the rest of the season.
00:35He was just fired from the Red Sox, but turned it down to stick around with his family.
00:39More on this coming up in just a bit with Peter Apple.
00:42Now, big sports betting stories with an S today here on the show.
00:46How about this one?
00:47Brendan Sorsby, remember him?
00:49Texas Tech quarterback transfer?
00:51How about this?
00:52Checking into a treatment program for gambling.
00:54He has an addiction and will take an immediate, indefinite leave of absence.
00:59He's under investigation in the wake of a discovery of him making thousands of bets on an app,
01:03of which we don't know which one yet.
01:05He bet on an Indiana football game while red-shirting for the Hoosiers.
01:08Also bet in Cincinnati on the Reds.
01:12And did some micro-betting, live gambling.
01:14And a lot of this, of course, you can't do.
01:16He was the number one transfer portal player in 2026.
01:20Sorsby, future certainly unclear, at least for the time being.
01:23All right, the future for Terry Rozier.
01:25This is clear.
01:26He's not playing in the NBA again.
01:27How about this one?
01:28More charges for him.
01:29This time, allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe.
01:33New charges, bribery-related allegations that expands the case against him,
01:38saying that he accepted a bribe to potentially, again, assuming throw basketball games or point
01:44shave, as they say.
01:46Rozier already has not played in the NBA this season.
01:48And is also facing two federal wire charges from October when he got arrested last year
01:54under the same indictment.
01:56All right, now let's get to some sports, right?
01:58Let's get to some on-the-field stuff and on-the-court stuff.
02:00We'll start off with Oklahoma City.
02:01They did it.
02:02Clean sweep.
02:04131-122 over the Phoenix Suns as they take the series 4-0.
02:08Advanced to the semifinals.
02:10Shea Gildress-Alexander, 31 points, 8 rebounds.
02:12Chad Holmgren, 24 and 12.
02:13Devin Booker did his best.
02:14He had 26 points in a losing effort.
02:17But, yes, it's another playoff sweep for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
02:20Here's SGA on moving on to the next round.
02:23Shea, third straight year, you guys got a sweep in the first round.
02:27What kind of sense of satisfaction comes with the sweep?
02:32It is a really good feeling.
02:36Just for, like, confidence-wise as a group, it's good to get, like, the playoff run started off that way.
02:45But, like, it's just important to get off to a good foot.
02:48Like, you never know what can happen.
02:50And usually the later you go, the better the team, so the series don't get like that.
02:54But you want to give yourself as many days that you can rest.
02:57And the more you can sweep, the better off, and the more days you have to rest.
03:01So it's pretty important.
03:02I mean, you can't say anything without, you know, bringing up Shea.
03:06You know, he's the MVP of the league, and he's playing the best basketball in the league for the past
03:11two years.
03:13Mixed with, you know, guys that know their role, some seasoned vets that, you know, they're relentless.
03:19Like I said, with that chemistry, the communication, you know, it's on 100%.
03:26And when the bench comes in, they get better sometimes.
03:29It's like reinforcement.
03:30It's not subs.
03:32And, you know, they have all the answers to the test.
03:36They've been tested together, and they've been together for years.
03:40So that's an advantage.
03:42Meanwhile, could the Detroit Pistons have the same fate as the Phoenix Suns?
03:48Well, not quite a sweep, but the Magic are up 3-1 after winning last night.
03:52They beat the Pistons 94-88.
03:55Desmond Bain had 22.
03:57They can win the series Wednesday night in Detroit.
04:01How about that?
04:02Going to be tough, though, to get that win and close it out, says Desmond Bain.
04:05They're looking forward to the challenge.
04:07You guys are up 3-1 now.
04:09How difficult will it be to get that fourth win?
04:12Extremely.
04:12Like I said, this is a team that won 60 games.
04:15I'm sure they're not blinking an eye, you know, about being able to win three games in a row.
04:20They did it multiple times throughout the regular season.
04:22So we're going to have to come ready to play, and I'm excited for the challenge.
04:28You know, go back up there to Detroit and try to close it out there.
04:32I mean, going into it, shock.
04:34But the way that we've been playing, you know, that stuff's not good enough to win games.
04:39And this league's too good.
04:41They're a good team.
04:42So, you know, they're out-rebounding, and that's turning me over.
04:47You know, we haven't hit enough shots.
04:48Our defense hasn't caught its footing.
04:50So, you know, it's not shocking that we're losing the games.
04:52But I do.
04:53Yeah, that game Wednesday will be the biggest of Cade Cunningham's career.
04:57Meanwhile, when the Nuggets need a big game, who do they go to?
04:59Nikola Jokic.
05:00Had a triple-double.
05:0127 points, 12 rebounds, and 16 assists in the Nuggets' 125-113 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
05:11They'll play game six Thursday night in Minnesota.
05:14So, David Adelman and company get at least another shot to stay alive in the series.
05:20And obviously knows that this was a must win, and so is later this week.
05:23I thought it was a good three-and-a-half quarters.
05:25I thought the end of the fourth was sloppy.
05:29But there's a lot of things to look at, you know, and say, hey, we improved on this.
05:34And I said this in the losses, and I guess it just, when you lose, nobody listens.
05:38But there are positives and losses, and you can find things to build on, and we did.
05:43And the group, you know, I thought they realized that there were some things that they could build on on
05:49both ends.
05:50And tonight was just a little bit better than it's been.
05:54And these series, they're long, man.
05:56And game six will be its own story.
05:59So, we'll look at the things that we didn't do well.
06:01And I think there's some things they'll see that some of those kids they played off their bench played well.
06:05And so, you might see more of them.
06:07So, we have to prepare for what could happen, and then we've got to prepare for what we know we
06:11can control.
06:11So, what did you see from your group, and what was causing all the problems holding onto the ball?
06:16Yeah, just kind of silly, you know, playing in the crowd.
06:21Not handling the physicality well, you know, just trying to plow through it.
06:26You know, just kind of, yeah, just that.
06:30And just a lot of just silly forced plays by guys trying to make something out of nothing.
06:36Do you think that, was there any kind of a lack of urgency on their part?
06:40Did you feel?
06:41No, I didn't feel a lack of urgency.
06:43I mean, we started the game a beat slow, but I didn't think there was a lack of urgency.
06:48All right, moving over to Major League Baseball, and the Boston Red Sox take care of the Toronto Blue Jays
06:53last night 5-0.
06:55That was a surprise, because Red Sox naturally just fired their manager.
06:59So, a couple of wins here for Chad Tracy as the new skipper.
07:02Dylan Cease took the loss.
07:03He's been great this season.
07:04Story was Ranger Suarez, who had 10 strikeouts and 8 innings pitched.
07:09Here's Marcelo Meyer after the game on being comfortable with the new staff in the three-game winning streak.
07:15Yeah, I mean, it's been good.
07:17Obviously, it's been a crazy couple of days.
07:19A lot of people that we loved as a team go.
07:22Wishing all of them the best, but at the same time, we've got to look forward.
07:27Tracy and Epi are two of my favorite managers that I've ever had since I started playing baseball.
07:31So, super stoked for them to be here.
07:34We know that Tracy's going to do a great job, and we have his back.
07:37Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres rack up another win, 9-7 over the Chicago Cubs.
07:43Mason Miller's scoreless streak does end, though, last night at 34 and two-thirds innings.
07:48He gave up a couple of runs in the top of the ninth.
07:49Padres still win.
07:51By the way, Yankees made history yesterday.
07:53They beat the Rangers 4-2.
07:55Ben Rice homered.
07:55So does Aaron Judge.
07:57So, they both have double-digit home runs for the first time this early in the season since 1956.
08:02Wow, Max Fried also picked up the win there.
08:05The Rays win again.
08:06Again, they beat the Guardians 3-2.
08:07They have five straight wins.
08:09Steven Matz is dialing it back.
08:10Seven innings pitched, two strikeouts.
08:12He wins.
08:12And also, Jonathan Aranda homered for Tampa Bay.
08:15And the White Sox come back to beat the Angels 8-7.
08:19Murakami homers yet again.
08:21He leads the major leagues with 12 home runs this season.
08:26How about that?
08:26Also, Penguins win.
08:28Vegas wins.
08:29And we've got three more games tonight in hockey as well.
08:32Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:34Dustin Gawker is in the house to talk prediction markets.
08:36You can listen to his podcast on prediction markets or also download his sub stack and read it on a
08:41daily basis.
08:42Thanks, Dustin, for coming on Newswire.
08:44Really appreciate it.
08:44And, man, this caught me by surprise, not the fact that prediction markets and, in particular, Calci having a really
08:49good day this past week, but having a record trading day this past Saturday.
08:56What sports were everyone trying to predict in?
09:01Was there something newsworthy-wise?
09:03I am just not getting this.
09:04Look, I understand sports-wise.
09:07You had the hockey.
09:08You had the NBA.
09:09You had Major League Baseball.
09:10I get it.
09:10But was there, like, a special event of some kind going on?
09:14Not really.
09:14This is just Calci kind of organically growing.
09:17Yeah, on Saturday we saw they surpassed the $700 million in trading volume mark.
09:22That is the second biggest day in Calci history outside of the Super Bowl, which is obviously notable.
09:27And, you know, we're in April, man.
09:29This is when the sports betting calendar kind of slows down.
09:32We start seeing things cool off heading into the summer.
09:35So this is crazy to see, $700 million in volume.
09:38Now, where this is coming from is partly because of the growth of parlays at Calci.
09:43We saw just short of $200 million of that total is on parlays.
09:47So that's, you know, anything that anybody's betting on that is multiple legs, just like at a sports book.
09:53So that's a meaningful amount.
09:54Also, it's hard to equate that to retail trading.
09:57So when we talk about volume, that's actually both sides of trade.
10:01So if you're betting $1 to win $99, that's counted as $100 of volume.
10:05So that's a little bit of retail activity and a lot of market making of people who are doing this.
10:10Still, it's growth.
10:11Calci is making money from this.
10:13And, you know, we're up to, you know, on that day, we're up to almost a third of volume, more
10:18than a quarter, a little less than 30% on parlays.
10:22So this is prediction markets really starting to capture and get into what sportsbooks do best is parlays.
10:29So this is where the growth is coming from as they become more and more able to replicate what's happening
10:36in the state-regulated sports betting market.
10:38We're seeing growth in the prediction market space.
10:40Makes sense.
10:41All right, let's get to this story here from the political angle.
10:44A soldier arrested for allegedly betting on the capture of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela.
10:51How did ABC News get this story?
10:53And how did this end up happening that they were able to find that this soldier ended up doing this?
10:59I mean, I guess that's the good news is that they were able to figure out that he did place
11:03this prediction.
11:05Yeah, this is a wild story.
11:07And it's, you know, to equate it for the audience, it's more used to sports.
11:10This is a lot like, you know, trading on information in sports, right?
11:14If you had information about somebody being hurt and or if you knew something was going to happen, this is,
11:20you know, using information, arguably illegally to bet on things.
11:23And so, yeah, a soldier who was a part of the task of the special forces that went in and
11:29captured Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela, actually allegedly bet on Maduro leaving, getting at being taken out of office
11:38at Polymarket.
11:39He bet, again, allegedly $33,000 and won $400,000.
11:44The Department of Justice brought charges against this soldier, so he could face decades in jail if found guilty of
11:54all of this.
11:54But this is the wild world that we live in, you know, betting on war.
11:59This is, again, kind of international, not really what's in the regulated U.S. space with Polymarket's international site.
12:05But, you know, lots of chatter about this.
12:07This was, like, the main news story on last week when it happened on Capitol Hill and in mainstream news
12:13that this person, the soldier, was betting on this.
12:17And it brings up all sorts of second-order effects and questions about insider trading and all sorts of stuff.
12:23But, you know, this is, you know, we also, we saw back in the spring when this happened, when Maduro
12:29came out of office, that people were betting on it right before it happened.
12:32So, you know, not strange, but it's good and interesting that he got caught.
12:37You know, he's going to be, we're going to have a trial about this.
12:40But, yeah, it feels a bit like a fever tree.
12:43We're talking about soldiers trading on insider information to bet on what's happening in geopolitical events.
12:48It's hard to believe this is the world we live in, Craig.
12:51Yeah, and evolving as we go.
12:54And Dustin has it covered for us here on the show.
12:56Speaking of which, maybe some political folks were trying to make a statement here by betting on their own elections.
13:04At least that's what they're claiming here.
13:06Calci has taken the steps to ban some of these politicians for doing so, Dustin.
13:11But I guess let's start with the idea that at least a couple of these politicians say that they were
13:16trying to make a point in doing this.
13:19Is that accurate?
13:19And do you buy that?
13:22Maybe, yeah.
13:23The main story is, again, wild world.
13:25This all happened last week, I promise you.
13:27Three candidates, Calci divulged that they're investigating three candidates that actually placed bets on themselves on elections that are taking
13:36place in primaries around the country this spring and summer.
13:40Two were for the House of Representatives.
13:42One was a Senate candidate in Virginia.
13:44Yeah, the latter, the Senate candidate in Virginia said he was actually making a point.
13:52He wanted to be caught.
13:53I'm not sure I buy that.
13:55You know, I think he was messing around.
13:57They got caught.
13:58It's Mark Moran, who's got very little chance to actually win in the Senate in Virginia.
14:05But, again, knock on effects of we now have betting on elections and people are using Calci and other prediction
14:12markets to wager on what's happening.
14:14And, again, good that they got caught, but we also – it wouldn't exist if Calci didn't exist and we
14:20didn't have election betting.
14:21So, people are trying to figure this out in real time.
14:24None of these people are going to jail.
14:25This was not referred to the Department of Justice, but, you know, they were fined.
14:31Moran said he's not, you know, he's not complying with what Calci said and faces a pretty big fine for,
14:37again, for trading on himself.
14:39He also traded on whether he would actually run for office, which for me is the bigger issue.
14:43He said there's markets on, again, everything, and there's a market that said, will this person run for office?
14:48Moran was included and then placed a bet on himself that he would, indeed, run for office.
14:54Again, crazy times.
14:55One of the people involved also is trying to ban prediction markets in Minnesota.
15:02He was actually, again, caught betting on himself, admitted it, and then, you know, at the same time, he is
15:08trying to get a bill through Minnesota, which is active right now, trying to ban prediction markets in the state.
15:13So, yeah, we're, like, we're just learning in real time about all these effects of prediction markets and how they
15:20impact the real world and in sometimes real material ways.
15:23Again, going back to the soldier, like, that's a national security issue, right?
15:26He's divulging through a market that he's betting on Maduro being captured.
15:30And, you know, I think we're still learning a lot of the knock-on effects of what's going to happen
15:34from prediction markets as they grow.
15:37Agreed.
15:37Dustin, check out his podcast on all of this and his sub-stack and appearing on CNN occasionally, too.
15:43So Dustin's all over the place as long as prediction markets are still operating.
15:47Thanks again, Dustin.
15:48Really appreciate it.
15:49We'll talk again next week.
15:49Thanks.
15:50Cheers.
15:51Cheers.
