00:00but we begin with the NCAA tournament which is several months away but naturally when it begins
00:06it's going to look a lot different here we go officially the field of 64 goes from 68 several
00:13years ago and now to 76 it's the biggest men's NCAA tournament increase since it moved to 64
00:22back in 1985 here's how it's going to work the first four games will be replaced with a 12 game
00:29opening round for the men's tournament those games will placed on Tuesday and Wednesday of the
00:35opening week tournament with the other 12 games being played between Dayton and another city to
00:41be announced for the women's tournament the 12 team opening round will take place Wednesday and
00:46Thursday between selection Sunday and when the round of 64 begins on Friday why is this happening
00:52the NCAA says or at least they've been reported that another 50 million dollars annually is coming
01:00to the NCAA tournament so money does tell the story once again okay in the NBA last night no surprises
01:07unfortunately that's what we're looking for we didn't get it yesterday the Pistons beat the Cavs
01:11pretty handily 107 to 97 and the Pistons have now won five straight playoff games dating back to the
01:17Magic so they're certainly playing their best basketball right now Kate Cunningham at 25 and 10
01:22Donovan Mitchell had 31 and losing effort game three will be Saturday in Cleveland where the Cavs
01:27have played extremely well and Cunningham says at this point it's all about winning
01:33you know I was just going to win games you know it's it's been a lot of games down the
01:37stretch where
01:38it's tight but you know we gotta have gotta have productive possessions balls in my hands and I
01:46gotta make plays with it so I think that's where it comes from is just trying to make the best
01:52play
01:52obviously the the cursor and the moment or whatever the word is I'm looking for um it's high stakes at
02:01the
02:01end of the game is what I'm trying to say and you gotta make plays so I think all of
02:05that stuff fuels me but
02:07you know I was just trying to do best for my team and make sure that you know I'm having
02:11my team
02:11the best day I can is what I'm doing Sean Duke fourth quarter and took your first lead since the
02:16first possession of the game and then Detroit closed the game on a 28 to 16 extended around the rest
02:21of
02:21the way why do you think that you guys could not I guess get over the hump again in the
02:25fourth quarter
02:29timely makes um
02:33by them timely offensive rebounds um
02:40timely misses by us they give you all that as a collective and um
02:46yeah I might go back and watch the film but just my initial
02:51response is just
02:54they countered they hit and they did what they're supposed to do they won two at home
03:00the Cavs have played well at home so we'll see what happens this weekend meanwhile no drama
03:04whatsoever between the Thunder and Lakers 125 to 107 yesterday maybe for a second it looked like the
03:11Lakers were going to cover in this one but they did not Shea Gilgis-Alexander with 22
03:14Chet Holmgren with 22 Austin Reeves had 31 in the loss but the physicality of the Thunder seems to be
03:22propelling them in the series says Shea Gilgis-Alexander uh absolutely um the way basketball works usually the
03:32more physical team and the more the team that imposes their will more just wins um and that's
03:37probably why we won tonight probably why we won last game uh we did a good job especially in the
03:42second
03:42half of really playing our style of basketball being physical pressuring them um making things
03:47uncomfortable I think tonight you know um we did a good job with over our first first uh defense
03:53we got a clean glass we got to do a better job we let Chet uh get some offensive rebounds
03:57and some
03:57putbacks either get some free throw line or get some putbacks um first team like that you can't
04:01you know give up second chance points we did a great job in the Houston series of you know as
04:04the
04:04series went on of being better at that so um we got to do a better job of hitting um
04:08you know and and
04:09not allowing them to uh get second chance points to be able to hold a team like that to our
04:14first stop
04:14um I think we can get better at that Lakers will be home this weekend couple of games in the
04:19NBA
04:19tonight coming up with Carlin Gay we'll preview those games all right now let's go over to Major
04:24League Baseball where the Red Hot Cubs just continue to win eight to three yesterday over the Cincinnati
04:31Reds Shota Imanaga with his best start of the season six innings pitched and ten strikeouts Michael
04:38Conforto Red Hot he's three for three the Cubs have won nine in a row and 15 in a row
04:44in Chicago here is Craig Council on Michael Conforto who is red hot as well three for three with a
04:50home
04:50run yeah he had a big day um and just you know they have bats that he's provided like in
04:59limited
04:59playing time it's that's just really impressive I think um you know it's I think he's like at 42 or
05:06three or something like that played appearances on the year and it's it's just been huge production so to
05:11come up you know hasn't started in a while and it hasn't started since I think last last game of
05:16the
05:17road trip and delivers you know kind of player of the game offensively um that's that's a pretty nice
05:25nice piece to have on the nice piece to have on your team and the hot team in the American
05:29League
05:30are the Tampa Bay Rays they continue to win seven in a row they beat the Red Sox as road
05:34dogs junior
05:34Cameron Arrow hit another home run as they just continue to win and the Red Sox going through
05:39it Roman Anthony placed on the injured list meanwhile the A's blow out the Philadelphia
05:44Phillies 12-1 tough start for Andrew Painter who gave up eight runs in three and two-thirds JT Ginn
05:50eight innings pitched eight strikeouts Shea Langeleers and Brent Rooker both hit home runs and Langeleers
05:56recently had a baby and has found some dad strength through that dad strength you know what it's all
06:03about buddy give us give it to us give us the play-by-play at the plate for you and
06:07that that
06:07first at bat yeah you know um obviously you know they're definitely definitely sad to to leave my
06:13newborn son but excited to be back and everybody always talks about you know when you have a baby
06:17the dad strength kicks in and I think part of that's just the the lack of sleep and you just
06:21come
06:21out here and it's kind of a a little bit more of a carefree feeling um playing with less tension
06:27um
06:27just kind of you know having your first kid kind of changes the way how you think all right the
06:32Pirates beat the Diamondbacks also yesterday four to two that was a close spread Mitch Keller ended up
06:37winning this one six innings pitch two to one the final Brandon Lau ended up hitting a home run in
06:43this one he's been great by the way for Pittsburgh here's Keller on the team fighting yeah saying it all
06:48year um there's no there's no uh we have all the fight in the world on this team so one
06:54game's not
06:54going to knock us down um and I think we just keep showing that every time out but yeah just
07:02just same mentality today's a new day nobody cares what happened yesterday and that's fun today
07:07and for the Yankees yesterday mixed emotions they beat the Rangers nine to two but they lost Jason
07:11Dominguez he ran into the wall and has a shoulder issue he's going to be put on the injured list
07:16they're calling up their top prospect Spencer Jones to debut this weekend here is Aaron Boone on him
07:22on Spencer what what are the reports that you've gotten out of him and have you seen
07:26some of his at bats in AAA yeah yeah I have uh good and and especially um you know he
07:34got off to an okay
07:34start but then hit a little snag there for about a week or so uh and then he is I
07:40feel like the last
07:41three four weeks um been been having a lot of consistent at bats the power's been there less swing
07:49and miss which is some of the things we were seeing a little bit in spring training after that
07:54you know maybe second week in in AAA where you know he went and it struggled a little bit with
08:00swing and miss he's he's cleaned that up and you know he's I think I think I saw leading all
08:06the minor
08:06league baseballs and baseball and RBIs um plural and um so he's he's put himself in the mix so
08:18doesn't mean that's the way we'll go we got to talk about it but the the signs have been encouraging
08:25Spencer Jones should be in the lineup this weekend for New York all right now the Hurricanes beat the
08:29Flyers four to one they're gonna end up winning that series they're up three nothing Sabres look to
08:33take a 2-0 lead over the Canadians Golden Ducks and Golden Knights tied at one welcome back to
08:39Newswire here on SportsCrit always great to catch up with Sam McQuillan from Legal Sports Report and
08:44Sam is getting ready for a big weekend of some hoops and of course Mother's Day I know as well
08:48Sam thanks for coming on the show really great to catch up with you so a big shake-up yesterday
08:53I
08:53noticed uh over at Legal Sports Report uh FanDuel uh is is I guess uh ousting Amy Howe she's out
09:01as their
09:03CEO and you know I I guess my my question for you Sam is that things were just so lovely
09:10with FanDuel
09:11and DraftKings and BetMGM and all these companies five six years ago you know when sports betting
09:15became legal and then state after state became legal I mean wasn't this and isn't this just sort
09:21of inevitable where these companies are looking at their CEOs and their high-priced tickets and we're
09:26just not getting any new states being legalized it's kind of hard to justify the advertising and
09:32even the people that are that are working in the company when they've already you know with all due
09:36respect captured all the people emails phones that they need to capture at this point I mean outside
09:41of just saying sign up for five dollars and you get a million I mean what what's left to get
09:45people
09:45in if they're in they're gonna be in by now yeah there's a lot to unpack there but uh I
09:51think
09:52definitely starting with the fact that yes you're right for the last five six years around when Howe
09:57took over about five years ago FanDuel and DraftKings it's pretty much just been them dominating
10:02everything and like you mentioned spending on advertising and continuing to kind of the main
10:08mission they've had is how do we get more money out of our sports book customers obviously there's not
10:12a ton of new states turning on so how do we make them bet these high margin bets better how
10:17are we more
10:17efficient from a business operating standpoint and you know we've seen DraftKings turn to different
10:23levers to kind of you know save money or make profits when investors want that but when you
10:28look at the kind of the big picture here is that the stock for FanDuel is down almost 60%
10:33over the past
10:34year which is kind of shocking if you you know if I dropped you on earth about a year ago
10:38you would
10:39be shocked to hear that because like you mentioned Craig FanDuel has been the number one sports book
10:44pretty much for the past half decade really kind of what happened was they were doing really well
10:49and then they had one kind of hiccup bad quarter at exactly the wrong time it was you know they
10:54spent
10:55way too way too little on promotions during NFL season their handle dropped down sharply and they missed
11:01the last you know earnings that they were going to give to off the Wall Street estimates so it kind
11:07of just was a perfect storm of things were going really great and then all of a sudden one hiccup
11:11and then you break in all the prediction market pressures there as well it's kind of the first
11:15time ever when you talk to analysts that people are sort of worried about the future of FanDuel there's
11:20cracks in the surface so not only are they replacing their CEO they also have a new sports book improvement
11:25plan to catch up on kind of some of the ground they've lost Flutter CEO Peter Jackson the company
11:32that owns FanDuel talked about this week on the call that they entered the year with frankly less
11:37customers than they thought they would which again when a company has been so dominant and so good
11:42at what it does and then you start to hear okay maybe we're not doing as great as we thought
11:46we would
11:47investors start to start to worry they obviously got spooked the stock drops and when the stock is down
11:52that much over the past year uh you know somebody kind of has to pay the price so while it
11:56might not
11:57be kind of all on how there are some you know FanDuel tv investments that might have not have turned
12:02out quite the
12:03way she wanted to some sort of external marketing spend and maybe not focusing in the right areas
12:08but she's obviously going to kind of someone's going to have to pay the price at the end of the
12:12day so
12:12it'll be really interesting to see kind of where FanDuel and Flutter go from here again tumultuous
12:18time when you have prediction markets taking over and we just really don't know what the next couple
12:22months are going to look like but what we do know Greg is that the fourth quarter football season
12:26is going to be like the biggest make or break quarter yet for the company which again comes
12:31after years of dominance so it's it's definitely things are shook up right now in the industry
12:36yeah a lot okay so that's that's the better explanation for the one that i gave going on and
12:41on uh okay so uh let's get to michigan the senate is uh eliminating online casino and trying to make
12:49more money off sports betting taxes i think that's my quick summary for what we're about to discuss here
12:55yeah the uh the mission the state of michigan the governor gretchen whitmer along with the state
13:01senate and the state house uh just agreed on a new budget or rather the legislature passed the new
13:07budget whitmer's version would have increased taxes on sports betting as well as online casino about 800
13:14million dollars she wanted to copy uh what illinois did which is add that 25 cent per bet fee to
13:22the
13:22first 20 million dollar bets that a company takes and then for every bet after that it's another 50
13:28cents so illinois a lot has been made about their tax rate it's a handle tax basically on top
13:33of already a high tax rate and the industry has obviously been very upset about it and what they've
13:39done is actually passed the tax down to customers there you know if you're in illinois you'll see
13:43the i think a surcharge fee it's called or there's a bet minimum sometimes as well and betting
13:48has actually dropped off in illinois as a result so the governor wanted to pass kind of the same thing
13:54uh in michigan and the senate actually came out and said no we're not going to pass that now is
13:59not
13:59a good time to really consider any tax hikes citing kind of the state of the economy uh is notable
14:05that you
14:05know she really only wanted to raise taxes on you know gambling tobacco as well but um syntax is what
14:12we
14:12call them but the you know the legislature kind of said it would be a really bad time to do
14:17that just
14:17optically we don't want to be tone deaf to what's going on so ended up not passing which is actually
14:22a big win for the industry i'm sure they'll they're happy they're not going to have to pay you know
14:25almost a billion dollars more in taxes next year but pretty interesting as well it was a democrat
14:30controlled house democrat controlled senate democrat governor kind of disagreeing on this so
14:35on the backdrop of all it could be prediction markets you know if we raise taxes people are just
14:39going to move over to prediction markets but who knows with that whole thing it's uh it's obviously
14:43a good thing the industry for the industry that this didn't pass but we'll see if kind of the same
14:47thing happens in other states as the year goes on all right fair enough all right let's get to the
14:53raging debate that continues on but i find it interesting that uh you know some of these
14:58executives from the sports betting companies particularly draft kings wonder what the future
15:02holds for prediction markets and debating whether or not they're sports betting or their predictions
15:07because naturally you know draft kings now has a vested interest on draft kings predicts and so i
15:12wonder for them even sam uh what their interest is at this point because as long as no other states
15:17like california and texas are getting legalized draft kings probably stands to make money from
15:23prediction markets just as like they do with uh with the sports betting right yeah it's it's pretty
15:29funny i think a couple months ago when we first talked about prediction markets emerging everyone was
15:34like oh draft kings and fan duel are going to be screwed they can't do this and what they did
15:38was just
15:39wait a few months to kind of do it on their own and as opposed to other companies like bet
15:43mgm and
15:43caesars which have maintained that you know those are not that's sports betting it's taking away from
15:48our business it should be regulated the same draft kings and and fandle they both said okay this is
15:53going to be allowed we're just going to use it to enter states like california and texas where
15:57sports betting is not technically legal and that's what draft kings has been doing uh one of their
16:02executives just uh this week at a milking institute panel talked about how it's really helped the
16:07company grow its customer base and saved a lot of money in doing so because again you don't have
16:12to pay any taxes to the state on this kind of thing you can reach states like texas and and
16:17california where draft kings has been one of the companies that spent i think half almost half a
16:22billion dollars trying to get sports betting legalized and then on the other hand you have
16:26companies like calci and robin hood which are kind of trying to defend this as a better overall consumer
16:31experience because it's peer-to-peer there's more opportunity for different prices on different game lines
16:36especially but then you look at companies like draft kings that have sports betting and they're
16:40they're saying we're on platforms like calci ourselves we're using our own technology to make
16:46money off this and be market makers on these peer-to-peer platforms and we're also doing it by
16:50the way on our platforms as well we have these new super apps where no matter what state you go
16:54to
16:55you click on draft kings you're basically in a sports book you know they've acknowledged from a
16:59consumer standpoint it's the exact same thing from a mechanical standpoint and a legal standpoint all that is
17:04different you know in order to get around those hoops but again it's uh something right now the
17:09draft kings is really focused on for the rest of the year i think we're going to spend about 300
17:14million
17:14more in investment and then once we have nfl season roll around that's when we'll see really uh whether
17:20that investment pays off and you know kind of who is on top in prediction markets at that time but
17:24who knows what's going to happen by then greg you have 20 lawsuits playing out in over a dozen states
17:28maybe the supreme court will get involved uh it's still very uncertain but i think in the meantime
17:33companies kind of have a clear vision of what we're going to do in the interim
17:37all right well sam good luck to your knicks this weekend and we'll see what we have next next week
17:42in terms of that series i know you'll be watching thanks again for coming on the show we'll see you
17:46next week yeah much appreciate it thank you craig
17:49you
