00:00As far as the game last night was concerned,
00:03the Miami Dolphins went into this thing and battled right down to the wire.
00:0731-21 the final.
00:09The Dolphins now 3-14 under Mike McDaniel against teams coming in over .500.
00:14But here's the good news.
00:15The Dolphins covered that 12.5-point spread, 11.5-point spread yesterday.
00:19So if he took Miami, he got the win there.
00:21Also a big game for James Cook on the ground.
00:23Here's Sean McDermott on the victory yesterday saying the Dolphins played well
00:27and the Bills were fortunate to come out with a win.
00:30Okay, first of all, good to get a win.
00:34Never easy.
00:36That was a heck of a game.
00:37High-level competition.
00:41Dolphins played a real good game and our guys made a couple more plays.
00:46I thought the grit, the mental toughness of our football team was on display
00:50throughout the game, in particular in the fourth quarter there.
00:53Deion getting his hands up, Deion Walker and TB making that play
00:58and then being able to seal the game.
01:01Good to see.
01:02A four-minute offense there, get the yards we needed to put the game away with Matt
01:07and reading Cam going out there.
01:09That's a key situation.
01:11They had a good plan today.
01:13I thought their offense did a good job of sustaining drives
01:17and really limiting our opportunities.
01:19You know, I thought we had opportunities on the offensive side
01:23and we didn't take advantage of some of them.
01:26But, you know, at the end of the day, we got the win.
01:29I think right now the Buffalo Bills are in a position potentially to roll off
01:33some more wins if you look at their schedule.
01:35Now, as far as the Dolphins are concerned, they're in the same boat,
01:37but they're 0-3 to start the season.
01:40Not many silver linings you can take away when you have a chance to win a game late,
01:43but here's Mike McDaniel on the outcome
01:46and then what Tua Tonga-Vailoa saw at the end of the game
01:49that really was the difference in terms of an interception.
01:52Our expectation was to come in here and win the game
01:57and we knew we had to not turn the ball over
02:00and we knew we had to, you know, try to get at least plus
02:04or at least even with them in the takeaway department.
02:08And we had to play good football, make some plays.
02:13And, you know, we had a turnover in a critical situation.
02:18We had a critical penalty on a punt.
02:24And those types of things can, you know,
02:29that's how these types of games are decided.
02:31Yeah, no more victories, that's for sure.
02:34There's definitely some things that we can take away that is good,
02:39that's up to par within our standard of how we operate within offense.
02:43And then, you know, with how the defense wants to operate as well,
02:47getting the stops, when they get those stops,
02:49we got to capitalize on that and allow ourselves to get points
02:53when we get those opportunities.
02:57In Philadelphia, big game coming up this week against the Rams.
03:00Right now, the Tush push under some more controversy
03:03about some potential false starts involving their game
03:06this past week against Kansas City.
03:08The officials will keep a closer eye out for that.
03:11Brock Purdy is one to keep an eye out this week.
03:13There was some thought that Purdy would miss several weeks
03:16with different injury issues, but he's trending in the right direction.
03:20And here's Purdy after practice on potentially playing this weekend.
03:24Yeah, I mean, exactly that.
03:25It's been a day-to-day thing this week.
03:27And I feel like I'm happy with the progress that I've been making
03:30with my foot and toe.
03:32And so, more than anything, it's just going to be a day-to-day thing
03:36on how I feel.
03:38Nothing really more to that.
03:40Would you let them know during the game
03:41that there was at least something that was bothering you in some way?
03:44Yeah.
03:45Would you play this weekend,
03:46or do you still need to wait and see how it feels in a day or two?
03:49Definitely just got to see, you know, come game time, how I feel.
03:52It's not – obviously, I want to play every game, dude.
03:54Like, I want to be out there.
03:55We only get 17 regular season games, and every game matters,
03:59especially the divisional, you know, going against the Cardinals.
04:01So, if you ask me, I'd love to.
04:04But, I mean, I'm trying to be smart with my body here.
04:07But you never know.
04:08We'll see when the game comes.
04:11Buccaneers have now lost two offensive linemen
04:13going into their game this weekend.
04:15Cody Mock, of course, went on IR.
04:17They've also lost Luke Getke.
04:18He goes on injured reserve.
04:20Bucs are going to try and pick up the pieces coming up this week.
04:22Big announcement yesterday from a future Hall of Famer.
04:25Clayton Kershaw says this is going to be his last season
04:28playing Major League Baseball.
04:30Of course, the postseason is coming for the Dodgers,
04:32but making his final regular season start
04:34after winning two World Series championships,
04:37three Cy Youngs, 2014 NL MVP,
04:40and, of course, an 11-time All-Star.
04:41Very emotional, Kershaw, at his press conference,
04:44making the announcement yesterday.
04:46What are you most proud of?
04:47Um, I don't know.
04:53I don't know.
04:56Hold on.
04:57I think I can answer that.
04:58Just give me a minute.
05:01I think we all play this game for the respect of our teammates,
05:06and so having these guys here is pretty special.
05:10I'm proud of that.
05:12What about playing your entire career in Dodger Blue?
05:14Yeah, that's been amazing.
05:16I love being here.
05:18I wouldn't change that for anything.
05:22Yeah, my kids have grown up here.
05:23LA's, you know, we started out, you know,
05:26dating to married to four, four-and-a-half kids later.
05:29So it's just been, um, we've all grown up here, haven't we?
05:33Yeah.
05:34So it's just been, um, it's been a special place.
05:37What are you anticipating tomorrow night making your final regular season start?
05:42I anticipate pitching good, Dave.
05:44All right?
05:45I mean, this is not, you know, this is, this game matters, you know,
05:49for both teams.
05:50Everybody's still in it.
05:51We've got to win these games.
05:52So it's good to get this out of the way today.
05:54And, um, you know, it'll be heightened, I'm sure.
05:57But, um, I got a job to do.
05:59So I need to go out there and do my job.
06:00And thankfully I'll have that to distract me for sure.
06:02Dodgers end up winning the game last night, by the way,
06:06against the Giants 2-1.
06:07They've won eight of their last 11 games.
06:10The Guardians complete a three-game sweep of the Tigers.
06:13And now they are three-and-a-half games back of Detroit
06:16with just a few games to go.
06:19Cleveland's got a shot.
06:20They've won seven in a row and nine out of ten.
06:22Steven Vogt says we've got to control the controllables.
06:26We can't, we can't control what anyone else does.
06:28We just have to keep winning games.
06:29If we win enough games and we get in, then great.
06:31If we win the rest of our games and we don't get in,
06:33we can't control that.
06:34So all we can control is ourselves.
06:36And we don't, we don't focus on, oh, the wild card division.
06:39None of that matters.
06:39What matters is we show up every single day ready to win.
06:42Yeah, I feel like, um, me and Joey have been saying,
06:44we've been going back and forth with each other.
06:46I mean, I think Joey had a rough first inning too.
06:48And I feel like, uh, after Joey's went eight innings,
06:51um, one of his starts, I was like, dude, like,
06:53what was the difference?
06:54And he was like, he was like, well, I was throwing a lot of,
06:56a lot of fastballs.
06:58And I was like, oh.
06:59And I kind of thought about it and I was like,
07:01that makes a lot of sense.
07:03And then that's what I did against the White Sox.
07:04And then after the first inning or the first two innings,
07:07I went to Joey and I was like, hey man, like, are you doing it?
07:10And he was like, no.
07:12And then he started doing it.
07:13And then I think after my first couple innings,
07:15um, I kind of thought the same thing myself.
07:17And I was like, am I doing that?
07:18And I was like, no.
07:19Okay, let's, let's go back to it.
07:20Max Freed pitched seven innings, struck out 13 to lead the Yankees,
07:25passed the Orioles seven to nothing.
07:27Also, Brent Rooker hit his 30th home run of the season
07:29as the A's beat the Red Sox five to three.
07:32Good news for South Carolina quarterback Lenora Sellers.
07:36He's been upgraded to probable for the game this week against Missouri.
07:40The ACC 10 is looking at a new schedule format
07:45and also Kansas and Arizona State discussing a 2026 game in London.
07:49We'll be back.
07:50All right, welcome back to Newswire here on SportsGrid.
07:53If you haven't been watching our show all year long,
07:56then you probably wouldn't be familiar with our next story.
07:58So I'm going to catch you up.
07:59I can't just keep doing this every show
08:00without telling you what's going on.
08:02So Sam McQuillan is with us from Legal Sports Report.
08:04There are several companies that are involved
08:07in what is called prediction markets.
08:10And what they do is they have apps and they have websites
08:13that allow you basically to make predictions on everything,
08:16including sports.
08:16But because it's not deemed as sports gambling or sports wagering,
08:21they're essentially operating without licenses
08:24in a lot of different states across the country
08:26that do not have legalized sports betting.
08:29Now that I've set the table,
08:30let's bring in Sam McQuillan for the latest here,
08:32where we're starting to finally get some pushback here.
08:36The state of Massachusetts could be one of them.
08:40A couple of companies, CalShe, Robinhood,
08:42they're operating in the prediction market space.
08:45And it seems like a very slow drip for these states
08:49to finally say, hey, look,
08:50if we're not getting our piece of the pie from you guys,
08:52it can't operate in our state.
08:55Yeah, I think that's spot on, Craig,
08:57with what's going on in terms of the slow drip
09:00and how things are slowly starting to take form.
09:03This week, Massachusetts Attorney General came out
09:06and sued both Robinhood and CalShe,
09:08which are those companies offering these sports prediction markets
09:11in so many states,
09:12which is really starting to piss those states off,
09:15it looks like.
09:16This lawsuit seeks for damages,
09:20compensation for lawyers' fees
09:22to an undisclosed amount,
09:23where it could be any amount of money a judge would decide.
09:26And most importantly,
09:28it also seeks to stop these companies from operating
09:30by seeking injunctive relief
09:32that would prevent them from offering
09:34what Massachusetts is saying is unlicensed sports betting.
09:37So this is a company that's valued at about $2 billion now
09:42with the whole sports prediction business
09:43and just continues to expand.
09:45Interestingly enough,
09:46their partner Robinhood also came out
09:48right after this lawsuit was filed
09:50and filed a counter lawsuit in federal court this time,
09:54which is important to note
09:55because a company like CalShe,
09:57a company like Robinhood
09:58that wants to be federally regulated as an exchange
10:01where it doesn't have to adhere
10:02to the state sports betting laws,
10:03they want these things decided in federal court
10:06because federal court or federal law rather
10:08supersedes state law.
10:10So basically what you have here
10:11is Massachusetts saying that
10:13they are violating our state law
10:14by not having a sports betting license
10:16and CalShe and Robinhood saying,
10:17no, no, no, no,
10:18we are regulated by the federal government.
10:20You don't have authority to sue us here.
10:22So we have seen similar lawsuits play out
10:24in other states so far,
10:26like Nevada, states like New Jersey.
10:28And so far the judges in those cases
10:30have mostly sided with the prediction markets
10:33ruling that they continue to operate
10:35and it's up to the CFTC
10:37to kind of figure out what they can and can't offer.
10:39Now, the backdrop of that, of course,
10:41is the CFTC has not weighed in at all on this subject,
10:46despite kind of everyone really urging them to.
10:49They have a lot of ties
10:50to the current administration through CalShe.
10:52So a lot of people view it
10:53as they're not going to come out unfavorably against it.
10:56But yeah, meanwhile, you have a growing number of states,
10:59about eight of them have sent cease and desist letters.
11:01And we'll get into another one
11:02that's taking some action too on this front.
11:04But you're starting to see more and more
11:05kind of come together in the line
11:07and we'll see if it's enough to sway the courts.
11:10Yeah, and not surprising that our follow-up story
11:13to the state of Massachusetts
11:14is also the state of Arizona,
11:15as you guys wrote about over at legalsportsreport.com.
11:19It appears as though they are another state
11:22that is saying, hey, look, where's our cut?
11:25Where's our money?
11:26Where's our tax?
11:27And if you don't pay it
11:28and you're operating in that space
11:30and you already have a legal license
11:32in terms of sports betting,
11:34you may lose it entirely
11:35if you don't come and make sure
11:37that you operate properly here.
11:39I don't know if properly is really the word for it
11:42because I don't think any of them
11:43are operating anything properly,
11:44but you tell me.
11:46Yeah, it's a great thing to outline first
11:49that one of the reasons the states
11:50are so pissed off and concerned
11:52is because these companies aren't paying
11:53the taxes and the fees
11:55that, you know, that's the first reason
11:57these states legalized sports betting to begin with.
11:59But Arizona coming out this week,
12:02not suing Kalshi and Robinhood,
12:04but rather telling every licensed sports betting operator
12:07and every licensed fantasy operator in the state,
12:09hey, if you guys do
12:10the sports prediction market business,
12:12it doesn't matter if it's in Arizona
12:13or California, Texas,
12:15these huge markets without sports betting,
12:17which is really where the bulk
12:19of this business has been happening.
12:20If you do them anywhere,
12:21you risk losing your license in Arizona.
12:24So that obviously applies to companies
12:25like FanDuel, DraftKings,
12:27and even Underdog Sports,
12:29which is a licensed fantasy operator in Arizona.
12:32Now, FanDuel, DraftKings have so far
12:34not gotten into the prediction market business.
12:37They have not ruled it out.
12:38Their executives have said,
12:40hey, you know, if this keeps happening,
12:41it might be something we have to do
12:42to get to these big markets
12:43where we haven't been able
12:45to legalize sports betting,
12:46like a California, like a Texas.
12:48FanDuel, meanwhile,
12:49has said they're going to do
12:50prediction markets later this year,
12:51but not with sports, at least to start.
12:54DraftKings is also making moves
12:56to acquire a prediction market company,
12:58but neither has gotten into the space yet.
13:00Now, you do have Underdog
13:01is the only licensed fantasy operator
13:04that's actually gone into this space.
13:06Earlier this month,
13:07they launched a sports prediction platform
13:09with Crypto.com in about 16 states,
13:12mostly where sports betting isn't legal.
13:14So not in Arizona,
13:15but notably in the letter
13:16that the Arizona regulators sent,
13:18they said, even if you do it elsewhere,
13:19you risk losing your license here.
13:21So for these sports betting companies
13:23that are kind of not being able
13:25to jump in on the sports prediction market space
13:27while they wait to see how everything shakes out,
13:30they kind of have this dilemma.
13:31Do we go in?
13:32Do we try to cater to a market
13:33and capitalize and make money?
13:35You know, Caltech has already surpassed
13:36a billion dollars in monthly trading volume
13:39pretty much because of sports.
13:41And these sports books
13:42are forced to wait on the sidelines.
13:43Do we jump in and try to,
13:44you know, take a cut of this business
13:46or do we risk losing everything
13:48that we spent years building
13:50with legalized sports betting,
13:52lobbying, you know,
13:53getting states to be on your side,
13:55you know, license you,
13:57approve you to be?
13:58It's kind of this dilemma.
13:59Do we come in and get money now
14:00or do we wait until
14:02maybe the environment
14:03looks a little bit more clear in a year?
14:05But who really knows
14:06what's going to happen with this stuff?
14:08But it is very notable.
14:09We see more states kind of taking action
14:11to say, hey, don't do this.
14:12Ohio has also done something similar as well.
14:14Of course, those states
14:15with the cease and desist
14:16and the Massachusetts with its lawsuit
14:18as well as the other lawsuits.
14:19So there is mounting pressure here,
14:21but at the end of the day,
14:22we still don't really know
14:23what's going to happen.
14:25No, we don't.
14:26And let's move on now
14:27as we get ready to close this out here
14:29with Underdog,
14:30who, of course,
14:31have had to move out of different states,
14:33one being California.
14:35I hope we get to get to that story
14:36here at the end.
14:37But, you know, Underdog wants to have
14:38a very big impact across the country,
14:41still in the daily fantasy format,
14:43probably in the prediction market format,
14:44I could guess.
14:46And it looks like that they are going
14:47to be adding some new leadership there.
14:49Sam, what does that mean for the company?
14:51Yeah, Underdog is one of those companies
14:53that has rapidly beefed up
14:55their financial backing,
14:57their C-suite hiring,
14:59and they just added two new key hires.
15:01One will be their chief marketing officer.
15:03One will be their chief financial officer
15:05that is going to bolster their team
15:07as they really dive
15:08into this whole sports prediction market business.
15:10This is, again, a company
15:11that first made its bones
15:13off of the Pick'em Daily Fantasy sports games
15:15across the country,
15:17which pissed off a lot of regulators saying,
15:19hey, this looks like sports betting.
15:20You need to have a license.
15:21Years later,
15:22they came back with a different version.
15:24And now it seems like
15:25they're kind of trying the same strategy again
15:26with the prediction market business,
15:28despite the warnings in the states.
15:30But they continue to raise money
15:31and continue to beef up their team.
15:32So we'll see how that plays out in California.
15:35We'll see how that plays out in Arizona,
15:37Massachusetts, and elsewhere.
15:39Speaking of which, Sam,
15:40Gavin Newsom, governor of California,
15:43he's being asked to veto sweepstakes.
15:45And without sports betting being legal in California,
15:48I know that sweepstakes are not sports betting.
15:52I want to make sure that people understand that.
15:53But if this ends up happening,
15:55we're moving further and further away
15:56from having legalized sports betting
15:58in California, aren't we?
15:59Right, so there's a bill on the governor's desk now
16:03that was voted unanimously
16:04to ban these sweepstakes-style sports books,
16:07sweepstakes-style casinos,
16:09which are these online games
16:10that really do look and feel
16:12like sports betting casinos.
16:13They give people the option
16:14to play them legally in California.
16:17But they operate under a sweepstakes model
16:19where people can play for free,
16:21although mostly they don't do that,
16:22kind of using a loophole.
16:23The tribes have come out hard against it,
16:25as they have against every other form of gaming
16:27that they see infringes upon their rights.
16:29They have tremendous lobbying power in the state,
16:32and it looks like this is probably
16:33not going to get vetoed by Gavin Newsom.
16:35I would be shocked if he did.
16:37You know, it was voted unanimously,
16:39and the tribes really support it,
16:41which they have a lot of political power in California.
16:43So it looks like if you're in California,
16:45you won't be able to have sweepstakes gaming
16:46in just a matter of weeks.
16:49Sam, great stuff as always.
16:51Enjoy the weekend of football
16:52and everything else you're keeping an eye on,
16:53baseball as well.
16:54We'll catch up next week here on Newswire.
16:55Thanks again.
16:57Yep, thank you, Craig.
