This historical novel spans the reigns of the Roman Caesars Tiberius through Nero. It tells the story of the fledgling early church and how they were impacted by Roman law and rule. The apostle Paul traveled extensively throughout that world, visiting metropolitan cities, fearlessly taking the Gospel of Jesus Christ straight into the heart of pagan worship. He suffered hunger, stoning, prison, flogging, beating, being shipwrecked three times, and being in constant danger of bandits. Yet throughout all of these reverses, he courageously and fearlessly defended his message and his God-given calling. Interwoven throughout the pages of this story are two Roman soldiers, Marcos and Gaius, who walk the Jerusalem wall, observing from their Roman viewpoint all that is going on in the Jewish world. They observe the persecutions led by Saul and, later, the puzzling change in his life. Eventually, because of the impact a changed Paul has upon their lives, they come to know his Christ. This very real and human Paul, along with the electrifying, heart-stopping world in which he and the early church lived, is sure to keep the reader on edge, wondering what can happen next. Paul and this early church were willing to give everything, including their lives, for the truth of the good news that Christ had come to set up his kingdom in the heart of man.

00:29book okay in the book i'm going to put it up on the screen right now and it is called to finish
00:35the course and of course you guys know what the course is if you don't know what the course is
00:40we're going to be talking about that today we have our d's and i i hope i said that right is
00:45that right i mean if i said that wrong i am so sorry oh i am so sorry how are you doing today
00:51miss templeman artist is that how you pronounce it that's how i pronounce it that's it it's
01:03beautiful i like that i like that i have never introduced or even had an artist on the show
01:09you're the first you're the first and you're beautiful thank you so much for joining me today
01:17tell me you know okay so let's let's dive right in you wrote the book you know here it is to finish
01:25the course but what was that course like for you in the beginning well it really began um i don't
01:32know if this is what you want but it began with my love for history we moved to um new england to
01:40um boston's full of it and uh i remember we walked down the my husband and i uh started at the commons
01:59in boston and uh we you know there's bimes and music groups and all kinds of things going on and
02:07and so we we we walked the walk of the paul revere ride and ended up in um the old north church
02:16to our horror we realized we had to walk back the long walk but it was uh but uh in in learning to
02:26know the history of new england i then i fell in love with the with the movie ad
02:34um well i don't know how many times i watched it and it was the the story of the roman empire
02:43and uh during the time of the of the caesars and then i i i love the bible the stories of the bible
02:53and i began to put together in my mind that uh the the christian world really began during the roman
03:03empire during the time of the caesars and so the man paul the man paul um uh what uh took the story
03:16of christianity all across the roman world wow and he suffered tremendously because he he he um he clashed
03:29with the uh orthodox jewish people and he clashed with the with the greeks and the romans and
03:37oh my goodness he ended up in prison he was beaten he was stoned he was uh he went through terrific
03:46terrific um um uh uh uh uh uh you know uh pain and to take that gospel across the roman world and begin new little
04:00churches everywhere wow so he sacrificed a lot yes he did sacrificed his whole life yes he did at the end of his life he was able to say i have finished the course i've run the race
04:15and uh there's laid up for me a crown of of glory and uh that's what i mean by he's finished the course
04:25wow he was faithful he was faithful wow wow how how accurate does the novel portray the political
04:35and social climate of the roman empire uh from tiberius to nero do you put that in there because i know you
04:42said you you love history what was that like for you to grab that that those nuggets
04:47it it it took me 20 years actually oh my gosh we were living in new england and i went to the harvard
04:57library and i went i went i they let me in and i would clear back to the dusty book section
05:04for nobody goes the old old old old hundred and you're older than that year old books and i went to
05:13yale and i went to dartmouth got into their libraries go way back there to where nobody was
05:22and nobody really dusted the books either
05:25i would i would make notes i would i i made many many many many notes just bought reams of notes
05:38and of the of the geography of the area and what what the what the old cities were like
05:47person most all of them now are just archaeological digs yeah and uh um i and the customs of the people
05:57of the age i mean the customs of the greeks the customs of the of the jewish people and i did the best
06:05i could yeah but my profession was a counselor wow and so um in in counseling
06:16i i studied the behavior of people i began to realize that uh these people in back in on the
06:26history history of our nation the history of of um of the type of christ of the times of of of paul
06:36they were real people they weren't just flat figures on a page they had they had they had likes
06:44they had dislikes they had dislikes they had fears they had um they had needs like we have
06:51that needs to be cared for that needs to be loved that needs to have their needs met
06:58and that's how i developed the band paul and the people he worked with nice and so i just i turned
07:07into people well yeah i mean they were weren't they they really were they were people my gosh so what
07:15did you find out that you didn't know before i mean there's got to be some nitty-gritty in there
07:21that we're missing that we you know we haven't found out before i mean what was it that you found out that
07:27you were like what no way um well one of the things was i was not equated with the philosophies of the
07:39greeks of what of what paul had had to encounter everywhere he went there were greek statues i don't
07:49know if you if what as i was reading about it i was reading about how nero just became insane you know
07:59he was insane up i don't know what he thought i guess he thought he would live into an infinity i
08:06don't know but he had all of the heads cut off all of the statues even the female statues that his head
08:13put on all the statues yeah he he thought a lot about himself he wanted to that was his version of
08:21a mirror that was his version of the mirror very narcissist narcissistic yeah that's it
08:29wow wow what paul was in in encountering uh with the greeks was he he he was he was stating
08:40there was only one god there weren't hundreds of them there was one god the creator of the heavens
08:45and the earth that was our one god you know but the greeks uh and the romans believed that there was
08:55no afterlife and so they they gave themselves up purely to pleasure yeah and uh in in uh the city of
09:07corinth corinth the epicurean philosophers taught that of course also that there was no life after
09:14death it was all materialism all all pleasure and uh and paul saw that there was course no fulfillment in
09:24that yeah you know i mean in our culture that uh there really is no fulfillment if we don't work
09:33no no no but you're doing this fulfillment it's got to be well definitely and i do believe that this
09:41is a a learning ground you know this is the teaching yeah you know this is where you learn this is where
09:47you experience and afterwards you know you go to wherever the most high wants you to go i mean i don't
09:53know where that may be you know everybody tells me that's you know gold streets pearl gates i mean if you've
09:59gone and come back you could tell me you know but i don't know anyone that has gone that far and come
10:05back you know so i have to say that yes i do believe yeah yeah there is we live on and on and on into
10:13eternity yeah forever and ever and ever so paul saw the hopelessness the total hopelessness and the
10:23enslavement they felt and um there there there there was unfulfillment but he was telling them you
10:33know uh he was he was proclaiming the the the the creator of the heavens of the earth right that is
10:43there is an eternity to gain yes you know we could have freedom from our internal and enslavements we
10:52could be set free yeah definitely what what what did what did this do for you i mean did this change
10:59you did this make you different did this give you more insight did it give you a deeper faith it did
11:06really yes the more i studied the more the more my own faith uh deepened and uh you know i just i just i
11:18just i just felt that in my own life i've got to be faithful i i've got to i've got to leave a legacy
11:28yeah in my own life you know um after i wrote the book i i put so much energy and time and into it
11:41so then i said to send it off to a publisher and i got a pink slip i sent it off to another publisher
11:48i got another pink slip and so i got really really really discouraged i threw all my notes away
11:58and i deleted it from my computer i thought oh i thought all that work for nothing oh my gosh
12:07and you meant you meant my just met my son ron yeah one day i had that little internal voice that said
12:17you need to get it published and i said nope i've already deleted it it's not there anymore
12:24and i kept hearing that little voice and so i i mentioned the dm he says i think i can bring it up
12:31here it was like all encrypted on my computer and he brought it up and there it was
12:40wow 20 years almost gone with the flick of a finger with a pink slip
12:46that's right other people have determined that they think you are which you're not
12:52oh my gosh i am so happy thank you thank you thank you thank you for doing that thank you for finding
13:00it he's in the other room well tell him i said thank you you know it is just a pleasure to see that
13:07a pink slip doesn't determine whether this is going to be a success or not and even a tantrum because i
13:13think that was kind of like a tantrum like i'm not done with this it was but i'm glad that he was able
13:20to see through it find it and here it is today the book is out and tell me you know what can people
13:28expect from this book when they read it what what do you want them to get from this book
13:33um i want them to get the message i want to get them the message that um um really there's no pit so
13:44deep but what jesus is deeper still um i don't i want them to get the message that um there is that that
13:54that uh um they can find fulfillment in life and that there is um
14:07uh i think the lesson of faithfulness is right of difficulties we don't know what we're going to
14:15go through in here in the united states if we may end up going through some really really difficult days
14:21yeah one of us is possible we can't say we won't right for many of the countries in this world do
14:29they go through really difficult times and uh if we will remain faithful and if we would if we will
14:38work to make a difference in other people's lives um that's what it's all about i gotcha the difference
14:47i understand and i agree definitely making a difference we're going to go ahead and put
14:51the link to the book in the description box below or wherever you may be watching so that you too can
14:57find it it is on amazon it's called to finish the race or to finish the course i would say the rest
