00:00Isn't cleaning fun?
00:01Let's not go too far.
00:03I'm Sabrina Soto, interior designer,
00:05and I love everything about cleaning and organizing.
00:08This is the fun part for me.
00:09Let's get to cleaning.
00:11My name is Jennifer McCartney.
00:12I wrote a book called The Joy of Leaving Your
00:14All Over the Place.
00:15We went to the same school of folding.
00:17My passion is understanding human behavior
00:19and using that to create sustainable change.
00:21It's not about making the place better
00:23because there's less in it.
00:24You feel me.
00:25Yeah.
00:26Sabrina and I really believe that mess
00:28is not a bad word.
00:30I'm a animal.
00:31Make a mess in here.
00:32That's what it's for.
00:33There are tons of podcasts, books,
00:35and other techniques telling you how to clean.
00:37It's not that bad.
00:38It's just chaos-y.
00:41But for most people, striving for perfection
00:43just isn't realistic.
00:44Who picks up the toys?
00:46No one.
00:47What?
00:48I firmly believe it's not about the stuff.
00:50But when it becomes an issue is when the people living
00:52in the house feel bad about it.
00:54I don't want to live like this anymore.
00:56So we came together to develop a four-step process
00:59that offers practical solutions that can work for everyone.
01:03And we call it the happy mess method.
01:06I already am seeing stuff.
01:07I'm like, I didn't know I had that.
01:08I see.
01:09I told you.
01:10We work with celebrities.
01:11And hello.
01:12Hello.
01:14I'm Shook.
01:15We work with families.
01:19We all have the same issues that we're facing.
01:21I just want a clean house, and I don't want to be divorced.
01:24Yeah.
01:26There's stress in both extremes.
01:28Whether you're super organized, like Sabrina.
01:30Sabrina's getting down to work.
01:32Or if you're a little more messy, like Jen.
01:34You understand me and my mess.
01:36Either way, we always meet in the middle.
01:38I think I'm crying more now than at my wedding.
01:40You did this.
01:41You did this.
01:45We are changing people's lives.
01:47We did it.
01:48We did it.
01:48Do you have any plans for this weekend?
01:58I do have to organize my living room.
02:00I'm not kidding.
02:01Is there like a pillow askew that's been bothering you all day?
02:05I mean, I'm sure there is, but I'll just give it a good Soto side chop.
02:08Oh, OK.
02:09You do the karate chop, and then you follow it up with a top chop side chop.
02:14Either way, it just goes on your couch, and you lie on it.
02:16So what does it matter?
02:17It matters.
02:19You're not living if you're not shopping.
02:20You know what I'm saying?
02:24I have to do a little inventory, make space for new.
02:28And that sounds exactly like what Cheryl Lee Ralph needs.
02:31Right?
02:32Knowing her, having watched Abbott Elementary,
02:35knowing her long career, it sounds like she's so busy.
02:38And we've communicated with them a little bit about what
02:40they hope to see for this space.
02:42But her daughter mentioned creating a space
02:44where she can just be.
02:46I'm Ivy Coco.
02:47I'm the daughter of the head diva in charge, Cheryl Lee Ralph.
02:53Oh, I like that.
02:54My mom has been working in showbiz for,
02:57let's just say, over 40 years.
02:59Oh, let's just say, your whole life.
03:01My whole life.
03:02And she's accumulated so many things.
03:04Here's the garage.
03:05I have friends that can have stuff for a season,
03:08and they get rid of it all.
03:09I don't.
03:10I look at it.
03:11I hold it.
03:12I remember it.
03:13She still has a roll of eggs.
03:14So I have stuff.
03:15From the 90s.
03:16What?
03:17And that is why every 10, 20 years, I need help with my stuff.
03:2120 years every two months.
03:22We're here.
03:26Over the last few years, there's been a huge emphasis on minimalism
03:31and getting rid of your stuff.
03:32But what I found when researching my book is that having stuff can
03:34actually be healthy and can actually spark creativity.
03:37Wow.
03:38And for someone like Cheryl who's had a long and storied career,
03:41she just needs a system that will enable her to keep everything
03:43that she wants, but do it in a way that just won't overwhelm the space.
03:48And that's where our happy mess method comes in.
03:51And hello.
03:52Hello.
03:53Hi.
03:54How are you?
03:55I'm well, thank you.
03:56Come on in.
03:57Hello.
03:58Hi.
03:59So good to see you.
04:00Good to see you.
04:01You know, this is a lot of things that you can actually be healthy
04:03and can actually be healthy and can actually spark creativity.
04:05Wow.
04:06And for someone like Cheryl who's had a long and storied career,
04:07she just needs a system that will enable her to keep everything that she wants,
04:09it's so good to see you.
04:10You know, Jen and Sabrina are a little bit of the odd couple.
04:13So I always feel that folks who work together like that, they can get a lot done.
04:19How long have you lived here?
04:20About 35 years.
04:21Wow.
04:22Yes.
04:23Mama's got stuff, baby.
04:24What do you want to focus on first?
04:26I want to really focus on my creative space.
04:29Let's go take a look.
04:30Oh, I can't wait to see that.
04:31Yes, thank you.
04:35So is this the guest house?
04:36Yes.
04:37How Jen and I tackle houses, it's not a one-sided house.
04:39One-size-fits-all.
04:40Sabrina and I have come up with a four-step process, and the first step is called assess
04:44your mess.
04:45Welcome to my creative space.
04:51Wow.
04:52Incredible.
04:53This is where it begins.
04:54Wow.
04:55Wow.
04:56We look at everything and we figure out why they're hanging on to certain things.
04:59Because when it comes to getting and staying tidy, it's important to understand their habit
05:03and what led them to create the mess.
05:05This is my daughter.
05:07Hi.
05:08Ivy.
05:09Hello.
05:10Good to meet you.
05:11And this is a step that clients can incorporate even when we're not around, because I think
05:14everyone at times can have a mess that just gets out of hand.
05:17Okay.
05:18So we've got a lot going on here.
05:19Yes.
05:20You are a collector of memories?
05:22Yes.
05:23Absolutely.
05:24Hold on to her memories, her memorabilia, but also her awards.
05:27There's so many accolades.
05:28Where are they?
05:29They're in these boxes behind us.
05:31Oh.
05:32There are like all these posters.
05:34Awards.
05:35This?
05:36Yeah.
05:37Oh!
05:38Yes.
05:39May I?
05:40Let's take a look at this.
05:41It doesn't have my name on it yet.
05:42That means I could just put my name on it.
05:44I could spend all day in here.
05:49Celebrity Businesswoman of the Year.
05:51Yes.
05:52It's like a museum to Cheryl Lee Ralph.
05:55These are all old headshots?
05:57Yes.
05:58Articles from the past.
06:00You have so many.
06:01The reason this space has been difficult to tackle is because of memorabilia.
06:08It's important to me.
06:09But you clip everything and it's all there.
06:12It was all put together.
06:13Wow.
06:14And it's important to be able to look up and see where it is that I have been and what it
06:18is I've done.
06:19This is full of pictures and treasures from all of the years.
06:25Oh, where'd they go?
06:27See?
06:28See?
06:29That's what my children do to me.
06:30Now I know they took them out and they're in a box somewhere.
06:33Oh my God.
06:34Because we don't need a filing cabinet.
06:35Yeah, we don't need that anymore.
06:36What era are we in?
06:37I have a filing cabinet and I think they're useful.
06:41There are studies that show the things that are hardest for us to get rid of are not things
06:46with monetary value or practical value.
06:49They're the things with sentimental value.
06:51But the filing cabinet, I think we can find a way to let that go.
06:54I love my file cabinet.
06:55We know.
06:56So you hang out here.
06:57I hang out here.
06:58We take a lot of our meetings here.
06:59We also watch movies in here.
07:00And also some merch I see too.
07:01Yes.
07:02It's become the Shirley Ralph fan club warehouse.
07:03Oh yeah.
07:04So let me get this straight.
07:05You said that this is a merch warehouse.
07:06Yes.
07:07A guest room.
07:08Yes.
07:09Your creative space.
07:10Yes.
07:11Hangout lounge.
07:12Yes.
07:13What else am I missing?
07:14I want it to be a glam space because I don't want to keep doing glam in my kitchen.
07:29You do glam in your kitchen?
07:30Yes.
07:31Make the magic happen.
07:32Also, I want her to be able to relax.
07:37This should be a meditation station as well.
07:39Oh my God.
07:40There you go.
07:41Oh, my God, there you go.
07:43In order to create a multipurpose area
07:45to serve all of Cheryl's asks,
07:47the one thing we're going to need is space.
07:50But for people who have an attachment to their belongings,
07:52the last thing you want to do is dictate to them
07:54what they can and should get rid of.
07:56It's not about making the place better because there's less in it.
07:59I don't think that's what any of us want.
08:01Like, it's all stuff you, like, worked for,
08:03and every little bit has, like, a little story.
08:05Yeah.
08:06So let's talk about a method.
08:08So in order to tackle this,
08:10we have to have Cheryl evaluate how much each item means to her
08:13and what really needs to stay in the space.
08:15Okay, so we've got a lot to create in here.
08:18Yes.
08:19Step two of our process is find your method.
08:21Once we figure out what's at the root of our client's issue,
08:24we select a personalized solution that will work best for them.
08:28Some of it tackles the organizational side of things,
08:31and some of it tackles the emotional side of things.
08:33We're like clutter doctors,
08:34and we come up with a prescription for every client.
08:37We're going to go through things that you need,
08:39you want, and you hate in the space.
08:42This method is called need, want, hate.
08:45Need, want, hate can help you simplify things
08:47just for you to visually see what needs to stay in the space,
08:51what could stay in the space,
08:52or what should probably go into storage or be donated.
08:55And if you want to do a test run on need, want, hate,
08:57you can use little sticky notes.
08:59So the way it works is you put a green sticky note
09:02on a piece that you need.
09:06A yellow sticky goes on anything that you want.
09:10And a red sticky goes on a piece that you hate.
09:13The sticky notes will also give you a visual cue
09:15on whether you're keeping too much.
09:17And the hate items, they got to go,
09:19whether they're purged completely or put into storage somewhere.
09:22Oh, hang on.
09:25Of course.
09:26Easy.
09:27Anyone can do it.
09:28So can you look around, you can grab anything,
09:31and just give me actual items that you need to stay in the space,
09:36that you would love to stay in the space,
09:38that you absolutely hate and can go?
09:39These leather chairs, sofas, they can go.
09:43Go, okay.
09:44Please.
09:45Organizing can be just really overwhelming.
09:46So by selecting these three categories,
09:49it can really help you figure out instinctively
09:51what works best for your space.
09:53I would like merch to stay.
09:55Okay.
09:56Yeah.
09:57Finding a way to organize the merch.
09:58Yeah, merch.
09:59And if you want to make it simpler,
10:00you don't even need the sticky notes.
10:01The point is not to overthink it too much.
10:03Absolutely need Miami.
10:05Yes.
10:06Yes.
10:07Need that.
10:08The awards I want to respect.
10:09So need, want, hate.
10:11Easy.
10:12That's it.
10:13I find it hard sometimes to just let it go.
10:18That's why I love the whole idea
10:20that you should look at what it is you have
10:22and figure out what is serving you,
10:24what is not serving you.
10:25So keep in mind, I want you to do this method every six months
10:28because once this is fresh, that's reasonable.
10:30You're going to start collecting things,
10:32or once a year, whatever works for your schedule,
10:34as long as you do it.
10:35You have a lot of stuff.
10:36Yes.
10:37So it's going to take us a while to sort through.
10:39Yes.
10:40Respect the process.
10:41Yes.
10:42Have fun.
10:43OK.
10:44Honestly, I think that everything that I'm asking them for
10:47is a lot.
10:48I will be shocked, but very happy,
10:51if they're really able to actually make it happen.
10:55Do you think she'll notice if I take the Emmy?
10:57I think she will notice.
10:59Yeah.
11:09It's purely by chance that I picked the really light boxes, Sabrina.
11:12Doesn't seem like...
11:13Huh.
11:14I carried all the pillows.
11:15Oh, my.
11:16They're really cumbersome.
11:17Hey, is everything OK?
11:18Yeah.
11:19Don't panic.
11:20Don't panic?
11:21Are you kidding me?
11:22Well, well, well.
11:23Just seeing this just stresses me out to the highest of stress-tivity.
11:25I know it seems weird that everything is out here now.
11:26Everything is going to go back in the room, except for the furniture.
11:28But you'll be surrounded by the things that you love.
11:29OK.
11:30Ivy, how are you feeling?
11:31I feel great.
11:32Yeah.
11:33This brings me a lot of joy.
11:34I'm very excited.
11:35Glad to hear it.
11:36Glad to hear it.
11:37And I'm excited to throw things out.
11:38Because this is Miss Throw It All Away.
11:40Throw it all away.
11:43Just throw it all away.
11:44That's who she is.
11:45I love that song.
11:46I love that song.
11:47That's a number one hit in my book.
11:48By taking everything out of the house, I know.
11:50And everything is going to go back in the room.
11:51The furniture, but you'll be surrounded by the things that you love.
11:53Okay.
11:54Ivy, how are you feeling?
11:55I feel great.
11:56This brings me a lot of joy.
11:57I'm very excited.
11:58Glad to hear it.
11:59And I'm excited to throw things out.
12:00Because this is Miss Throw It All Away.
12:02Throw It All Away.
12:03Throw It All Away.
12:05By taking everything out of Cheryl's space,
12:07we can figure out what needs to be brought back in
12:09and how to make the most out of the space.
12:11And this can really pertain to any space
12:13that you're trying to organize
12:15because it's easier to make a game plan
12:16when you have a clean slate.
12:18Oh my God!
12:20Ah!
12:23Wow.
12:24Here, let me get this last part out.
12:27Oh my gosh.
12:28The possibilities are endless.
12:30The possibilities are endless.
12:34Don't make me cry, y'all, you know?
12:36Don't cry yet.
12:37Yeah.
12:38There's more to come.
12:39Wow.
12:40So one of the things that we do with a multi-purpose space
12:43is we want to kind of lay it out
12:45and see where we're going to put everything
12:47rather than bringing everything in
12:48and then kind of like shifting it around.
12:50So one of the ways that we do that
12:51is we use this painter's tape and we can mark the floor.
12:55Okay.
12:56I want to go over a few options
12:58of what the layout's going to be
12:59because it needs to serve many functions.
13:01Yeah.
13:02This method is called zoning.
13:05Zoning is a great way to think about
13:07how you want to use that space.
13:09You're creating a game plan
13:10of where the different zones are
13:12so that everything doesn't just end up jumbled all together.
13:15Some people might want to do like similar items
13:17grouped together.
13:18Like if you want to keep all your cleaning supplies
13:20in one place.
13:20Like how many times have you been in the kitchen?
13:22You get the mop in one area.
13:24You got to go to the other side of the kitchen
13:25to get the bucket.
13:26Relatable.
13:27It's exhausting.
13:29Or you could organize zones by who uses them.
13:34Like kid items.
13:35They could be lower, easier to reach.
13:38But you don't want zones on top of zones.
13:40A good rule of thumb is to place your zones
13:43at least a foot or two apart.
13:44You don't want a zone sandwich.
13:46Can we have a sandwich?
13:47No.
13:48This is the part that Sabrina lets me do
13:51because it's like really hard to mess up.
13:54First and foremost, you have the merch.
13:56Yes.
13:57That you said you needed to store.
13:58And so from here, this will all be a console.
14:05Oh.
14:06OK.
14:07OK.
14:08OK.
14:09That will house in the cabinets all of your merch.
14:13And it'll be accessible.
14:15So you'll be able to walk right up to it.
14:16OK.
14:18For a lot of people, change can be the most difficult part
14:20of the organizing process.
14:22So from a psychological perspective,
14:23this just helps our clients ease in to the process
14:26by helping them see what's possible in their space.
14:30About here, we'll have a chair.
14:35Another chair on that side.
14:37Oh, OK.
14:38I definitely think Sabrina and Jen's tape method
14:41is going to help her as a visual learner.
14:43Like a little bit of a lounge here.
14:45Oh, we don't have to go to the movies.
14:46We can stay right here.
14:49I think she's the type of person, she likes to see things.
14:52She wants to know exactly where they are.
14:54And then I was thinking, all of the natural light that's
14:57coming in here, I feel would really be beautiful for you
15:02to have this as your glam area.
15:04Yes.
15:05OK.
15:05Girl, we're on the same page.
15:07Good, good.
15:07That's exactly what I saw.
15:09So using that tape to create these zones for the glam space,
15:13the zone for the zen den, is really going
15:15to help her understand the potential of this space.
15:18I feel like this was just a catch-all.
15:20It was a hodgepodge of stuff.
15:22Now, for the most part, you will have a designated space
15:24for designated things.
15:26And your stuff will be back.
15:27OK.
15:28I know you're worried about that.
15:29Yeah, you know.
15:30The important stuff's going to be back.
15:31There you go.
15:32Yes.
15:33I sense that Cheryl has some anxiety about what
15:35is going to be donated and sorted.
15:38So I can really empathize with that.
15:40And that's one of the reasons why we need to get her
15:42beyond the mess.
15:47This is when we take our clients outside of the space
15:50that's stressing them out and just giving them a little bit
15:52of perspective.
15:53If, like me and like yourself, you're attached to the stuff.
15:56Like, it's an emotional process.
15:59Some people think organizing is just as simple as cleaning.
16:02But there is a psychological component to this, too,
16:04especially if you're attached to your stuff.
16:06And making time to take care of those emotional needs
16:09is just as an important part of our process
16:11as the cleaning is.
16:12In fact, it could be even more important.
16:15We like to kind of take people out of the space
16:18so that they can relax.
16:19We can have a good time together while Sabrina's working.
16:22Are we going to dinner and cocktails?
16:23That was my suggestion.
16:25Yes.
16:25It's something better.
16:26But apparently, people get relaxed these days
16:28by doing yoga.
16:30You did that.
16:31Yeah, I did.
16:31You did that.
16:32I did.
16:32I need some inspiration for your mom.
16:34My mom, she's had an incredible year.
16:37So I really want her to really just find her quiet zone.
16:40My amazing cousin, Marley, she's a yoga instructor.
16:42Has your mom ever done yoga?
16:44I mean, in her dreams, she does.
16:46This might be a nightmare for her.
16:48Oh god, I know where this is going, but I'm sorry.
16:50But I'm sorry.
16:51Yes.
16:51But you guys are going to go do some yoga.
16:53This is your time to figure out how you're going
16:57to create your meditation for your relaxation station.
17:01OK.
17:01You got that?
17:03Maybe they'll give us margaritas like halfway through.
17:05Hi, dog.
17:06Is that how yoga works?
17:07Got it.
17:08All right.
17:09Then we're going to have to do the downward dog
17:11and all of that, girl.
17:13I mean, there's not many people who could say they did yoga
17:15with Cheryl Lee Ralph.
17:17Cheryl Lee Ralph.
17:26All right.
17:27So while they're relaxing, we're going to relax our own way.
17:30Yeah.
17:31Organizing.
17:31Ivy and I are cut from the same cloth.
17:34She loves things organized.
17:36I love things organized.
17:37Honestly, for me, it's like meditation.
17:39Me too.
17:40I'm so happy she's here.
17:42So these bins are going to be for her storage.
17:44It's stuff that we're not going to get rid of,
17:46but we're not going to display in the space.
17:49OK.
17:50So my little hack for this, we're going to use QR codes.
17:55Ew.
17:56Interesting.
17:57The next step of our process is hack your mess.
18:03It's a little different than find your method,
18:05which is about big picture strategies and techniques.
18:08Hack your mess is all about the tips and tricks
18:10to use to help you organize your space.
18:12We're going to start cataloging exactly what's in each bin with this QR code.
18:16Love that.
18:17Then we scan a picture of this QR code.
18:21OK.
18:21And when you put the QR code in your phone,
18:23it'll tell you what's in the bin.
18:24So you don't have to pull anything out or pull it out.
18:27Love that.
18:27Right?
18:28Love that.
18:29The QR code hack is perfect for someone like Cheryl,
18:31who has so much stuff.
18:33But a lot of it isn't necessary for her to keep in the Glamtuary.
18:36So by using QR codes, we can keep everything she wants to keep in these bins just in a storage space.
18:42And the bonus is you don't necessarily have to organize every single bin as long as you know what's in there.
18:49So whatever goes into this bin goes to this QR code and it's all cataloged.
18:52And she can do this in her phone.
18:54Absolutely.
18:55It's going to make it super easy for her and she'll know exactly where everything is.
18:58This is so cool.
18:59Right?
19:00Sabrina's trick when it comes down to the QR codes are very helpful for my mom.
19:05Like, come on, technology.
19:08I love this.
19:09And knowing that she could just scan a QR code, take a picture of her items,
19:14and she knows exactly what's in the box is going to help her in the future when it comes down to organizing.
19:19I just feel like your mom needs to be creative.
19:21And I know that in order to be creative, you need the space to breathe.
19:25I agree.
19:26Decluttering is my form of, like, meditation.
19:30See?
19:31Speaking of meditation, how do you think your mom's doing at yoga?
19:34I truly think she's doing amazing.
19:36Really?
19:36Yeah.
19:37She's open to know it's...
19:38You don't think they, like, made a hard right and went and had cocktails somewhere?
19:41No.
19:46Oh, and see, it's right here.
19:48Okay.
19:49Taking Cheryl beyond the mess is a really important part of our process because for her and a lot of our clients,
19:54the concept of moving, organizing, getting rid of your personal items can be really overwhelming.
19:59Uh-oh.
20:00Oh, wow.
20:01I hear my auntie.
20:02Oh.
20:04And when it comes to cleaning and organizing, we want it to be sustainable.
20:08Well, come over here.
20:09We have our yoga mats.
20:10Okay.
20:11All set up and ready.
20:12Studies show that even just taking a five-minute break every half an hour or hour can help relieve anxiety.
20:18So taking some time for yourself, taking some time to relax a little bit, that's what I want for Cheryl.
20:24And we're going to start just with a couple breaths to relax the body, ground the body.
20:30And a cleansing exhale out of the mouth.
20:33And you can do anything you want to help you de-stress.
20:36And feel the stretch.
20:37Whoa.
20:38Yeah.
20:39With Cheryl, we're doing yoga, but it can be as easy as going out for dinner or taking a dance break.
20:44What's important is to just give yourself a designated amount of time to relax so that you don't feel burnt out by cleaning.
20:50Ooh.
20:51Feels good?
20:52Yeah.
20:53I just want you to stay here for one more breath.
20:56Inhale.
20:57The anxiety of watching all of that stuff coming out and then being rearranged.
21:02Bring the hands back to heart center.
21:04Ladies, it's from my heart to yours.
21:08Thank you for joining me in this practice.
21:10It's like, oh my God, release me.
21:12Cheryl, how are you feeling?
21:14I actually feel very good.
21:16I love the fact that you chose something beyond the mess that I wouldn't usually choose to do.
21:23So it's like a great discovery, you know, and then I'm just like, oh, wait a minute.
21:27This was good.
21:28Does this mean you're going to take up yoga then?
21:30I think I'm probably going to be much more open to doing it again.
21:33Oh.
21:34Yeah.
21:34Let's go get a margarita.
21:35There you go.
21:36Oh my goodness.
21:37That was great.
21:38Maybe we should do pressed juice.
21:40Wow.
21:41You really are a new person.
21:43Yeah, we might as well go all the way, huh?
21:55Hello.
21:56Hi.
21:57Oh my God.
21:59Drama-rama.
22:00She is going to love this.
22:02It's so rich and earthy and pretty.
22:04Tell me everything.
22:05How was yoga?
22:07Yoga was great.
22:08We went in a little skeptical, but she is really about taking time for herself.
22:12Who knows?
22:13Maybe it's in her future.
22:14Yes.
22:15Do you feel like you're going to go to yoga from now on?
22:17You're a yogi?
22:18I think that it was a great one-time experience and I'm really grateful for that.
22:23All right, so you like the color?
22:26The color looks incredible.
22:27Yes.
22:28And a new rug.
22:29Okay.
22:30Yeah.
22:31This is going to look good.
22:32Honestly, I haven't wrapped my head around all of her awards because I haven't seen like
22:37all of them.
22:38Yeah.
22:39I feel like that is the most important.
22:41So I need your help getting all the awards together to start figuring out what's coming
22:44back in here.
22:45I was just, I thought maybe I'd go meditate.
22:48Get out of here.
22:49Get out of here.
22:50The days of meditation and yoga are done, honey.
22:52No, no.
22:53Start organizing.
22:54All right.
22:55Have fun, boy.
22:56You got this.
22:57Yeah, sure.
22:59All right.
23:01So these are personal papers, so that will go back to the office.
23:07Sabrina, what's your position on displaying VHS tapes?
23:11Are you serious?
23:15We're almost ready, Jen.
23:25Doing the glam room.
23:28I have not been this nervous in so long.
23:34I cannot believe that I'm putting Cheryl Lee Ralph's plaque on her Emmy.
23:38Be careful.
23:39I'm like shaking.
23:41It's a big, complicated space.
23:44It's Cheryl Lee Ralph.
23:45We want to make her happy and Ivy happy.
23:47Okay.
23:47I'm going to call Ivy.
23:51I'm like sweating.
23:52Hello.
23:53Hello, Ivy.
23:54It's Jen and Sabrina.
23:56We're ready for you.
23:57Are you ready?
23:58I'm ready.
23:59Okay, great.
24:00We'll meet you and your mom in the backyard.
24:02See you soon.
24:03Okay.
24:03See you there.
24:04Bye.
24:05This is it.
24:05This is it.
24:06This is it.
24:07I don't know if Cheryl's going to like it.
24:09I mean, I don't because it's so different.
24:11I don't know if this is what she was expecting.
24:13Hi there.
24:14I'm so nervous.
24:15Are you nervous?
24:16Oh my God.
24:17I'm so excited.
24:18Okay, good.
24:19How are you feeling Ivy?
24:20I'm nervous.
24:21You are?
24:22Definitely.
24:23I don't have too much to say until I see it.
24:24Okay.
24:25Let's go look.
24:26All right.
24:27Come on.
24:28I'm ready.
24:29After you.
24:30Follow me.
24:31I'm asking for a lot.
24:34So I'm going to pray that they know what I need and want.
24:38Oh.
24:39Yes.
24:40Wow.
24:41Oh my God.
24:42I love it.
24:43I love it.
24:44Oh.
24:45Yes.
24:46Yes.
24:47Yes.
24:48Yes.
24:49Yes.
24:50Oh my, my, my.
24:52Wait a minute.
24:53Okay.
24:54Yes.
24:55We've got a new desk.
24:56Lighting.
24:57Curtains.
24:58Oh, I love the ceiling to floor.
25:00Yes.
25:01Drapery of it.
25:02Oh, yes.
25:03Ta-da.
25:04You have tons of storage here.
25:05Oh my gosh.
25:06Tons of space.
25:07Great.
25:08Oh my gosh.
25:09Oh my gosh.
25:10Oh my gosh.
25:11Tons of space.
25:12Great.
25:13Oh my gosh.
25:14Oh my gosh.
25:15Oh my gosh.
25:16Oh my gosh.
25:17Oh my gosh.
25:18Oh my gosh.
25:19Oh my gosh.
25:20Oh my gosh.
25:21Oh my gosh.
25:22You have tons of storage here.
25:23Oh my gosh.
25:24Tons of space.
25:25Great space.
25:26This is much better than a file cabinet.
25:28I'll agree with you there.
25:29But you know what it is for me?
25:31It's this.
25:32Yeah.
25:33Oh my gosh.
25:34This is like young Cheryl Lee manifested all of this.
25:38Wow.
25:39Are you going to miss doing glam in the kitchen?
25:41No.
25:42Absolutely not.
25:43That's right.
25:44Absolutely not.
25:45This is amazing.
25:46This is wonderful.
25:47Are you ready for the main space?
25:49Yes.
25:50Okay.
25:51You ready?
25:52Yes.
25:53Okay.
25:54Let me see.
25:55I have to see.
25:56Wow.
25:57Whoa.
25:58Whoa.
25:59Whoa.
26:00Whoa.
26:01Whoa.
26:02Whoa.
26:03Whoa.
26:04Whoa.
26:05Wow.
26:13Wow.
26:14You deserve this.
26:15Wow.
26:16I love it.
26:17I'm in love.
26:18I am in love.
26:19I absolutely love it.
26:20Wow.
26:21You guys.
26:22It's divinely.
26:23inspired.
26:24Victoriously made.
26:25Yes.
26:26Awesome.
26:27Awesome.
26:28Awesome.
26:29It is awesome.
26:30Oh my God.
26:31You put my name plate on it.
26:32I did.
26:33I'm going to brag about that for the rest of my life.
26:35Oh my God.
26:36You put my name plate on it.
26:37You have all of your merch.
26:38Look at the merch.
26:39Oh my goodness.
26:40Have a t-shirt.
26:41Have a t-shirt.
26:42Have a t-shirt.
26:43You get a t-shirt.
26:44You get a t-shirt.
26:45You get a t-shirt.
26:46Now the space has designated zones that she needed.
26:49You have your desk space for your Zooms.
26:51Oh, look at this.
26:52Oh, look at this.
26:53Oh my God.
26:54It is awesome.
26:55I love it.
26:56It's awesome.
26:57It is awesome.
26:58Oh my God.
26:59You put my name plate on it.
27:01I did.
27:02I'm going to brag about that for the rest of my life.
27:04Oh my God.
27:05You have all of your merch.
27:06Look at the merch.
27:07Oh my goodness.
27:08Have a t-shirt.
27:09Have a t-shirt.
27:10You get a t-shirt.
27:11this she has the lounge area mom we can finally have an actual movie night together oh my goodness
27:19and don't forget about the most important space all of your awards are here it's lit so you can
27:28see them this is so beautiful we placed cheryl's awards throughout the space but we made sure that
27:37she has an entire bookcase dedicated to existing awards and ones that we know are coming girl you
27:44know what my favorite part is what look at those yoga mats look at those yoga mats and you've got
27:51this area you've got these amazing fluffy pillows a perfect meditation station oh my gosh the
27:58meditation station is exactly what i wanted for you
28:01oh look at loretta and debbie wow that was the opening night party of dream girls and then the
28:11emmy night up with you all my goodness you can see the beginning to where you are right now in your
28:17career you are a legend and you need to have a space that celebrates you yeah i love it yeah and where
28:23you're going this is all that and a bag of chips yes god didn't bring me this far to bring me this
28:32far yeah and i'm sure you're trying to figure out where a lot of the stuff went but everything that
28:37went into storage is now catalogued so all you have to do is take your phone scan a qr code and every
28:43bin you'll be able to see what the contents are inside of it so easy i love this yes because it's not
28:49just about having a beautiful space but we have to be able to maintain it absolutely easily yes i think
28:54i'm going to use this in my home too so we left you with solutions yeah solutions hallelujah i feel
29:01like our work here is done thank you i'm so happy thank you oh thank you thank you thank you for letting
29:13us thank you thank you yoga buddy i'm glad that my mother has a space where she can be her where
29:22she can have a place to relax be beautified enjoy the space thank you i'm going to you have options
29:30now i love it and they're great options now we can relax do you want to go do yoga we've got more
29:36work to do we've got to go meet the chang family and then see tanks in her chaos room
29:39amazing let me go sit down in my space i can literally see me coming into this space and spending
29:47time in it i love that for you yes i love that for you she's an icon she's a legend and she is the moment
29:56i saw something the other day and i thought of you what was it i read a study that says the average
30:11person spends can you guess how many days a year cleaning i would say like 30. the average person
30:19spends six days a year cleaning what i spent 30 minutes this morning cleaning i have like a
30:30very strict like routine but it sounds like the chang family could use a bit of that yes
30:38my name is lauren and this is my husband andy we have two girls brooklyn and alina and we are a mess
30:46as you can see the laundry is everywhere the house has become a disaster uh yeah there's just stuff
30:54everywhere i'm probably like 90 to blame maybe maybe 95 okay anyways on my side a little bit neater
31:04than her side it's not that bad honestly storage containers clutter is really triggering for me
31:11i don't know how to be happy in a mess see i know i bought all kinds of organization things i'm
31:18hopeful that sabrina and jen can help us to balance our organizational our organize you can't even say
31:25the word right organization we need help
31:33cute house for some people living in an organized home can feel really soothing and relaxing it gives them
31:39a bit of peace in a chaotic world it does but for some people living in a really clean and organized
31:44home can feel a bit restrictive they actually feel more at home with a little bit more chaos
31:49and that's why lauren and andy need an approach that will appeal to both of their sensibilities so
31:54that they can meet in the middle
31:59hi hello come on in hi hi nice to meet sarina nice to meet you nice to meet nice to meet you
32:08compromise is key because the sign of a healthy relationship isn't that you agree on everything
32:13it's just that you find a way to manage those differences
32:15so your house is adorable thank you thank you we moved from a condo and then was able to upgrade
32:24in space yeah it's big as we soon found out upgrading space means upgrading
32:32so the mess has been a point of contention it affects my emotions 100 and as a kid
32:39my bedroom my toys i would line them up on my shelves i needed a certain way oh my goodness
32:45i like them looking at me i would just i could just stare at them same i feel like i completely
32:49understand andy because i am andy and how do you feel about the house lauren i feel like i'm organized
32:55in like other aspects of life because like with my job as a nurse i have to be super organized so when
32:59i come home it's my free space to be me just like andy and sabrina are one in the same i feel like lauren
33:05and i are so similar she's a free spirit she loves to relax you know she's not super uptight
33:15like some lovable people can be so the kitchen looks like it's pretty organized what spaces do
33:22you want us to take a look at two places our bedroom and our kids bedroom okay let's go see it okay
33:29okay okay this is the girls room
33:43not as bad i thought it was gonna be oh yeah this is fine yeah it's a kid's room yeah it's a kid's room
33:48it's a kid's room really fun yeah it is fun it's a problem um what's the problem well the problem is
33:55there's stuff all over why is there holiday stuff and tupperware in their closet yeah please
34:01there's a changing table i can't get rid of it because i'm like first of all what if i have a
34:05third wait a minute i'm not on board with the third you tricked me into this if they do have another
34:09baby i don't know where the baby stuff's gonna go because there's no room so the truth is like
34:14they don't really use their closet it's all their stuff is actually in our room what they don't like
34:18their room and they've only slept in their room two or three nights out of their whole life well
34:24this is okay where do they sleep talking about exactly what you're thinking they're going to sleep
34:30in our bed so the whole big picture of doing this is actually to get their space well enough for them
34:35to just like sleep in their own bed because you know there's no feeling of comfort and safety there's
34:41an energy yeah right yeah 100 i feel the energy in this room is it good it's pretty um heavy the fact
34:47that brooklyn and alina don't like to sleep in the room because it's so cluttered really breaks my
34:52heart i do believe that the kids should feel proud of the house and especially their rooms our oldest
34:58we've talked about like hey we're going to start cleaning this up and then i think in her mind she's
35:01preparing herself to sleep like she's getting ready and she's excited okay yeah i do think it is
35:06important for them to learn to be organized and clean but then also i don't want it to be overbearing so
35:12i feel like a good balance would be great but like not as crazy as andy so how does this room
35:18compare to your bedroom we'll just show you well let's just show them yeah let's scared
35:26you're excited i'm scared
35:27okay
35:33oh this room's massive don't look over here okay
35:49okay oh this room's massive
35:50don't look over here okay
35:57lauren and andy have so much stuff on the floor i'm in shock this is a lot of stuff is this laundry
36:04day uh laundry year yeah i can see and so laundry gets done and just piled up it's all in baskets
36:12at least yeah contained yeah i see like two baskets with their names on it is that like
36:18basically their dresser well it's their dresser um so yeah we've had to put names so they know
36:24like okay lena's clothes go find your clothes she'll come to her basket you know i love a basket but just
36:30having baskets with everything in it that's not a system i ordered a 15 pack of baskets now we ran out
36:39and so now we're using trash bags but expecting her to fold everything and neatly put it away is not
36:43realistic because for naturally messy people they're not really motivated by rigid guidelines and rules
36:48a great alternative is utilizing your wall space you can mount coat racks or peg boards to allow
36:53more hanging space for your clothes and that way they're off the floor and you could easily see
36:57what you're looking for and for me i just need two things okay every night i just want to be able
37:03to find my unmentionables and an undershirt for the next day that's all that's it but it's a treasure
37:09hunt every time i make it fun i mean i make it fun for him tonight when i'm gonna take a shower i gotta
37:13find my unmentionables it's this it's okay you're mentioning your unmentionables a lot oh hey look i
37:18found one oh there you go okay so i'm good save that for tonight those things they're like finding
