00:00Oh, shit, this is tight, Ralph.
00:08This is really tight, Ralph.
00:11Hold on, just take a second.
00:13Oh, God, I can't hardly see. It's horrible.
00:15Well, just remember your breathing. You all right?
00:18Oh, my God, I just can't breathe. Just give me that.
00:20Just take some breathing, touch your hands together.
00:22Oh, God, this is awful.
00:24Oh, wow, this is awful. Oh, my God.
00:30This is Will.
00:36This is terrifying. Slow down.
00:39And this is Ralph.
00:41I feel like a powerful badass.
00:43We've been mates for 20-odd years.
00:45Come here, let's have a snuggle.
00:47We might look like middle-aged blokes.
00:50Yeah, this is great fun.
00:51But really, we're just a pair of massive...
00:55...noisy...
00:57Whoo!
00:58We're sinking!
01:00...kids.
01:01Where have you got that cake from?
01:02So what will it take for us to grow up?
01:04I really tried.
01:06Embrace modern life.
01:07Should've gone for some supple nails, like mine.
01:10And become better.
01:11Let it go on without a survivor.
01:13Maturer...
01:14...men.
01:16Look at these times. There's something wrong with these.
01:18Set me up goal.
01:31Everybody...
01:32Oh!
01:34Rock your body right...
01:37We are back, pal!
01:39Back the streets, back...
01:40All right!
01:41...
01:46...
01:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:49I like...
01:50...in picture to know.
01:52Yeah, yeah.
01:53Am I the only one?
01:56Yeah...
01:58Am I sexual?
02:00Not much anymore.
02:02Am I everything you need?
02:04You better rock your body now.
02:07Everybody...
02:10We are back, mate!
02:12Well, we made it.
02:14Difficult second album.
02:15We made it? What do you mean, we made it?
02:17Well, we made the show.
02:18I thought you meant we're still alive.
02:20Fucking hell, barely. I'm 49 now.
02:22Oh, mate.
02:23Honestly, it started to panic me.
02:24When people die now, I'll look at their age
02:26and count how many years I've done left.
02:35Literally, this morning, you got something out of your bag.
02:38Yeah.
02:39And it was like a pharmacy locker in a hospital.
02:42So there was just tablets falling out of it.
02:45Because, all right, Imodium, I don't fancy shitting myself, right?
02:50And every now and then, you go, whoa, and you start sweating.
02:53No, no.
02:54So Imodium's for that. Gavis is going to get a lot of heartburn.
02:56When did you become my grandma?
02:59I don't know.
03:00Hey, do you know another thing I've got into now?
03:02Boiled sweets.
03:04Are you...? That's a joke.
03:05No, I love a boiled sweet.
03:07My grandparents literally used to say,
03:09Ooh, I'll tell you what I do like on a car journey, boiled sweets.
03:12Are you serious?
03:13Yeah.
03:14Last series, you were like, don't let the old man in.
03:16This series, you rolled him out of red carpet and actually didn't...
03:19Yeah, we have some space for you in the back, sir.
03:21What did you learn about yourself?
03:26The biggest thing that you learned about yourself?
03:29Well, from last series?
03:30Yeah.
03:31I learned a lot more about you and I think you learned a lot about me.
03:33I think in a team situation, I think we've got each other's back and I think we have got better.
03:38But we are only literally one word away from wanting to kill each other as well.
03:44At the same time, if one of us gets it wrong.
03:46Like a marriage.
03:48Today, right, I've organised for us to do...
03:51Oh, God.
03:52Well, something that's...
03:54A bit of driving.
03:55You like driving?
03:56Yes.
03:57A bit of teamwork.
03:58We're going to have to work together.
03:59I actually think we learned in the last series that we're pretty good at communication like that.
04:04No new roles.
04:05I think that...
04:06Where are you going?
04:07You fucking idiot!
04:08Get out of here, knob!
04:13At least we've grown up a bit.
04:15We came together as a team.
04:22Can I just say...
04:28We are here.
04:35Oh, wow.
04:38This field just outside Brackley is home to one of the UK's biggest collections of tanks outside of the army.
04:50It's called...
04:52Tanks A Lot.
04:53I'll be honest, I thought we were...
04:54The way you were talking, I thought we were going rally driving, but this is much better.
04:58Hey!
04:59Oh, wow.
05:01We're here to meet owner and tank collector, Nick Mead.
05:05How's it going?
05:06Mate, you've got a lot of tanks.
05:09300 and counting.
05:10300 tanks?
05:11Yeah.
05:12And it started when you were young just going, I want a tank!
05:15Yeah, about...
05:16And then I had to wait a little while until I had some money and then I bought one.
05:19Very cheap.
05:20Off the army.
05:21And it just began.
05:23We're sort of looking into teamwork.
05:25Communication...
05:26Communication is imperative.
05:28What?
05:29We're in driving a tank?
05:30Yeah.
05:31You've got a crew.
05:32Normally, driver, commander, gunner, loader.
05:34And if they're not working perfectly as a team, it costs you your life probably.
05:38Right.
05:39So, yeah, you need to communicate well today.
05:41Well, this is your ride for the day.
05:46It's a beauty.
05:47It's a 434.
05:48Go on, mate.
05:49Up you go.
05:50All right, do you need a hand?
05:51Press off!
05:52Right, if you try and lean over, I'll show you the ins and outs of this.
05:55Okay.
05:56Come on in.
05:57Right, what you've got, these are for your steering.
05:59Yeah.
06:00You keep them both forward, you pull the right to go right, left to go left.
06:03If you pull it hard, it turns really tight.
06:05If you pull it gently, it turns really gently.
06:07Okay.
06:08Have any...
06:09Have you driven a tank before?
06:10Well, here's my tank licence that I got in 2009 when I was in the Romanian army.
06:19The Romanian army?
06:20Yeah, so you'll see my licence is there.
06:23For what?
06:26I've got a licence.
06:27I got it on a show called World's Toughest Driving Tests about 15 years ago,
06:32where I learned to drive a Romanian tank.
06:35What?
06:36Well, I just saw it.
06:37Don't casually pull out a tank licence.
06:40What?
06:45Oi!
06:46This is hell!
06:48As Ralph doesn't have a professional tank licence,
06:51Nick needs him to do a lap on the practice track first.
06:54That's it.
06:56Go on!
06:57And now build your revs up and we're off.
06:59Okay.
07:00Go on, son!
07:01I'm off!
07:03Hey!
07:09Whoa!
07:10Fucking hell!
07:15I don't want to sound like I'm, you know, following myself.
07:17It's not that tricky.
07:19He always seems to pick things up dead easy.
07:21He seems to be good at everything.
07:22He goes, I've never done this before.
07:24Oh, but you mean master at it, am I?
07:26You want one now, don't you?
07:27Yeah, I do!
07:32He's probably going to say he didn't have to do nothing to get that tank licence.
07:35They give them to everybody.
07:36That's the type of thing he'll say.
07:37I reckon those licences are piss easy to get.
07:41This is fun!
07:42You've done very well.
07:43In fact, I reckon you could do that blindfolded.
07:45Right?
07:46Right.
07:47So, let's get a blindfold.
07:48What, really?
07:49Are you joking at me?
07:50No, stop it.
07:51Really?
07:52Well, we're going to do a blindfold.
07:53Are you serious?
07:54Yeah.
07:55Right.
07:56I don't think you can use the word right or left either.
07:58What do you mean?
07:59We use animal noises.
08:00Animal noises.
08:01What?
08:02So, obviously, communication is the big theme here.
08:04But when we first arrived and were learning how to drive the tank, I was like, well, I
08:09don't quite get what the communication issue is.
08:11And then suddenly it was like, we're doing it blindfolded and we're not going to use English
08:15words, we're going to use animal noises.
08:16It was like, oh, okay.
08:17I really get it.
08:18It's important that you can communicate in any kind of situation, in any kind of way,
08:20for any crew.
08:21Cat and dog, right?
08:22Meow!
08:23Woof!
08:24Meow left.
08:25Woof right.
08:26Slow down.
08:27That sounds slow.
08:28Slow down to cow.
08:29Here we go.
08:30Put your blindfold on.
08:31So, let's run to...
08:32Meow!
08:33Left.
08:34Nay!
08:35Nay!
08:36Try it.
08:37Slow down.
08:38Speed up.
08:39Right.
08:40We've got it.
08:41What about stop?
08:42Cock-a-dum-doo!
08:43Sorted.
08:44Right.
08:45Let's try it.
08:46Okay, here we go.
08:47Engine on.
08:48Right.
08:49Cock-a-dum-doo!
08:50Cock-a-dum-doo!
08:51Cock-a-dum-doo!
08:52Sorted.
08:53Right.
08:54Let's try it.
08:55Let's try it.
08:56Okay, here we go.
08:57Engine on.
08:58Right.
08:59Cock-a-dum-doo!
09:00Cock-a-dum-doo!
09:01Left.
09:03Oh, no.
09:04Buck-a-dum-doo!
09:05Jump-a-dum-doo!
09:06Left.
09:07Oh, no!
09:08Yes!
09:09Off!
09:10Up!
09:11Approach the roof!
09:12Off!
09:13Off!
09:14Off!
09:15Off!
09:16Off!
09:17Off!
09:18Off!
09:19Off!
09:20Off!
09:21Ah!
09:22Shit!
09:23Whoa!
09:24Left!
09:25I'm thinking...
09:26Am I going into a tree?
09:27How fast am I going?
09:28I don't know.
09:29I can't! You're not giving me any commands!
09:34Look! Look!
09:35I'm trying to tell myself, don't forget the animal noises.
09:38Look! Look! Look! Look!
09:40See? Shut up, the bastard!
09:43And as soon as I panicked, they went right out the window
09:45and I was doing all sorts of animal noises.
09:47Look! Look! Look!
09:49Get out! Get out! Get out! Get out!
09:51Sounded like Dr Pissing. Doodle. We're doing half the zoo.
09:54See? See?
09:56Look! Look! Look!
09:58Coo-coo-coo!
10:01Coo-coo-coo-coo!
10:02Will, this is shit!
10:04Coo-coo-coo!
10:06It was a lot more difficult than I think either of us expected.
10:11Are you ready?
10:12OK! Coo-coo-coo-coo-coo!
10:17Coo-coo-coo-coo-coo! Me out, me out, me out, me out!
10:20Coo-coo-coo-coo!
10:24You're in neutral, you fucking bell-head!
10:27Is it in gear?
10:28No, is it neutral?
10:29It's in gear first!
10:31Not a very good start, was it?
10:32Stop!
10:34Let's try that again.
10:35Coo-coo-coo-coo-coo-coo-coo!
10:37Meow, meow, meow, meow, meow!
10:45Yeah, I think having driven first with the blindfold on, it gave me an understanding of what I would have liked to have heard.
10:53And I do think that that gave me a bit of an advantage plus I'm cleverer
11:23I was going
11:52Moo! Moo! Moo being a cow, which was the agreed noise for slow down
11:58You threw a donkey noise in her, somewhat changed
12:01I went Moo! Moo! Moo!
12:03I can't remember what that was
12:04That's why that happened, because you just accelerated into the water
12:09I realised I don't like being blindfolded
12:11It came over like a tidal wave and it stunk like absolute shite
12:18And a bit went on my lip, right there
12:22I can't even think about what's in that water
12:29Animals have shitting it, pissing it
12:32You know, things have died in it
12:34Corpses, you know, all sorts of rotten shit
12:39Nick, how was it? All right?
12:41I think it was satisfactory
12:44I think you were better at the commanding
12:46Did he say he was a better tank driver than me? I don't know whether he did
12:50Did he say that?
12:51I don't think your communication is bad by any means
12:53I just panicked a bit
12:54But I feel like you, the blindfolding really had you panicked a little bit
12:58Do you know what it was? I panicked and when I panicked I forgot my animals
13:01I definitely wouldn't be good in a combat situation, I'd just panic
13:03I'd shoot me home people
13:05I'd just shoot everybody
13:07I would, I'd be shit at it
13:08Are you a little bit grumpy because you've got water that smells of shit all the way?
13:11I don't, I've got to get this off me
13:13A bit of it went in me mouth again
13:15It's becoming a bit of a regularity for me
13:17Piss off, let me get off this thing
13:19I need one for you, do you know the difference between Abu Dhabi and Dubai?
13:42Go on
13:44Well the people in Dubai don't like the Flintstones
13:48But the people in Abu Dhabi do
13:58Just crashing to the central reservation, I'm swerving us over
14:04How about you then?
14:05Anything you learnt about yourself from last year?
14:07Do you call your mum more?
14:09Yeah I do, I do
14:11Well there's a win already
14:12You opening up about your sister
14:14You talking about that?
14:16You talking that you said to me, I've got no one to talk to
14:19That bothered me
14:21You know what I mean?
14:22It's not the lack of having people who would be willing to be there for me
14:26For all of these people that would love to be there for me, I'm like
14:28No you alright thanks, we're good
14:30Oh what, oh, oi oi oi
14:32Yeah we go
14:33Yeah
14:34Life is a highway
14:35I won't ride it all night long
14:39I'm taking you somewhere else now
14:41And now
14:42This is communicating with the team
14:45Okay
14:46We are going to be doing wheelchair basketball
14:52Really?
14:53Yes
14:54Oh I like that
14:55Well you know obviously I had a disabled sister
14:57Yeah
14:58I've been around, you know, and seen how disabled people are treated as well
15:02And I want to get into that conversation as well
15:03Because me growing up was normal
15:05Because I was born and my sister was already there and she was disabled
15:09Yeah because it's not othered is it, it becomes normalised
15:11And everyone in the community knew her as Joanne, that's Jo
15:14But as soon as you stepped out of that you could see people being uncomfortable
15:18Yeah
15:19They would avoid eye contact or talking because they felt uncomfortable
15:23And they don't know how to act
15:25You know what I mean?
15:26So I think that's interesting that the more you communicate with people who are not like you
15:32That's a good point
15:33Then the more you will understand
15:40We're in the West Country to meet up with award winning wheelchair basketball coach Jack Davey
15:48Hiya nice to meet you
15:50Hey Will
15:51Nice to meet you
15:52Take a seat, I've got my own
15:53I'm here to teach you some wheelchair basketball
15:55Yeah
15:56Show you the ropes basically
15:57Very exciting
15:58How long have you been doing this?
15:59Since about 14 so I've travelled all over Europe
16:01I used to play professionally in Germany as well
16:04So I was born with a really rare form of spinal bifida
16:07So it's going to be progressive as I get older
16:09So I used to play able-bodied sports, running basketball
16:12Then I went into a wheelchair assessment because my disability started to progress
16:16And the guy was like if you play basketball why not do it sat down
16:19And that was it really and I never looked back since
16:22We're non-disabled people
16:24Yeah
16:25Does that happen a lot?
16:27Like you can have people who are non-disabled playing the sport with people who
16:31It's better to look at wheelchair basketball as an inclusive sport
16:34Rather than a disability sport
16:36Because essentially everyone needs to be treated the same
16:39You know I'm just a guy that sat down
16:41Because it is for everyone
16:42Like literally you sit in a wheelchair that's it
16:44And you'll see today you'll meet a load of guys from our team that have a huge variety of disabilities
16:49Some more severe than others
16:50You can just come and play sport together
16:52Any tips?
16:53Don't stand up
16:54I feel like it's cheating
16:55Yeah just a little bit
16:57Yeah just a little bit
16:58Careful with your celebrations
16:59Yeah yeah don't stand up run into the corner
17:01In your face!
17:02That might be a bit much
17:04Yeah yeah yeah
17:05You're our teacher now
17:06Yeah
17:07Make us decent
17:08Yeah let's do it
17:09Shall we get changed?
17:10Yeah of course
17:11You need to get changed first
17:12Alright you lead the way Jack
17:13I'm excited
17:16Strap yourself in
17:17Okay
17:18A few little things
17:19Keep your feet behind the bar here
17:21Because if someone comes at you at speed
17:23That's going to hurt obviously
17:24Basically to turn your chair all you need to do is touch the wheel
17:27So say I wanted to turn right
17:28Oh you gotcha
17:29And the chair will just go
17:30Okay
17:31Right shall we practice the right turn?
17:32Yeah let's see how you get on
17:33Very nice
17:35Oh very smooth
17:36Yeah
17:37It's got a bit of the old tank vibe to it
17:39So in terms of dribbling
17:40You take two pushes
17:41And bounce the ball every single time
17:42So you can take two pushes
17:44Bounce the ball
17:45Put it back into your lap
17:46Then take another two
17:47Bounce the ball
17:48Put it back in your lap
17:49Your lap
17:50I didn't understand you had to still bounce the ball
17:51I thought you could just go with it on your lap
17:55It's hard isn't it?
17:56Push, push
17:57Push
17:58Here we are
18:00I think we did okay
18:03It's not
18:05It caught my finger
18:06Ah ha
18:07Ah
18:08Who designed these?
18:10How would that really hurt?
18:11That really hurt
18:12You don't appreciate how hard it is just to wheel a wheelchair round
18:23I won't be able to lift my arms up tomorrow
18:24I hope I don't have to say hello to anybody
18:25It'll be like that
18:26Because a lot of spinal injuries need to get that momentum to then build up and
18:31What's a weird
18:33Finger again
18:34He's got his finger again
18:35He's hurt his finger again
18:36He's out
18:37He's out
18:38Keep your finger out of the rim
18:48Yeah I've known that now
18:49It's not a motto I usually live by
18:54I'm an adventurous sort of bloke
18:58With our wheelchair basketball skills as good as they're going to get
19:02Jack is introducing us to the real players
19:05To have a real match
19:14They look good don't they?
19:15They look very fast and very good
19:18I thank the coach for it
19:19Yeah
19:20Okay so this is the first team players
19:22Hello everybody
19:23I'm Will this is Ralph
19:25We're here to let you down
19:27Let you down a lot today
19:28Yeah
19:29Yeah
19:30I'm Ashton Bovingdon
19:31Been playing wheelchair basketball since I was five years old
19:34Have you been playing a lot recently?
19:37Not recently due to my back
19:40I've got scoliosis
19:42I had spinal surgery
19:44So you're back from surgery
19:45Is this your first time back?
19:46Yeah
19:47Oh is it?
19:48Eight months
19:49Are you glad to be back getting yourself active?
19:51Yeah loving it
19:52My name's Emma
19:53And I've got Neur syndrome
19:54Okay
19:55Jack improves me every year
19:57And every year I get better
19:58And then like this year I got tryouts for a women's team
20:02And I've been signed
20:03Oh have you?
20:04Yeah
20:05It's also Jack really
20:06Well I must wait for your good
20:07Do you know what I mean?
20:08Yeah I'll take that completely
20:09Because one of the biggest things I want to give these guys
20:12Is building them as a person
20:14Not just the player and themselves
20:16So being independent
20:17Pushing their own chairs
20:18And doing their own thing that they need to do
20:20Rather than just me telling them what to do
20:22I understand
20:23Are we going to be on the same team or opposite teams?
20:25I'm putting you on opposite teams
20:27It's on
20:28It's on
20:29It's on like Donkey Kong
20:30Oh god
20:31Right
20:32Here we go
20:33Yay
20:34We've got this guys
20:35This is vitally important
20:37We cannot let Ralph's team win
20:39If anyone can hurt Will it'll be hilarious
20:41I've got really pointy elbows
20:43Just saying
20:44You've got pointy elbows?
20:45Yeah yeah
20:46He's not very precious about his face
20:47Oh okay
20:48I want the word win
20:49That's all I want to hear
20:50You ready?
20:51One, two, three
20:52Win!
20:53Win!
20:54Only winners over here
20:55There's no losers on this team
20:57Do you hear me?
20:58No losers
20:59Come and tip off then
21:00Come and tip off then
21:01Come and tip off?
21:02What does that mean?
21:03Really?
21:04It's not what you think it is
21:13Yes Jack
21:14Oh shit balls
21:15I've got to win it as well
21:16La la la la la la la la
21:18Come on Jack
21:19Come on Jack
21:20Yes Jack
21:21Yes Jack
21:22We're getting to you Jack
21:24Yes defence
21:25To speed it in
21:28The one went past me
21:30Like a whippet
21:31It just flew past me
21:32I couldn't keep up with anyone
21:33Oh close
21:37Oh
21:38How's it going that fast?
21:40Yes
21:41Yes
21:42Yes
21:43Oh yes
21:44Jack
21:45Jack
21:46Jack
21:47Oh yes
21:48Jack
21:49Jack
21:50Jack
21:51Oh hang on
21:52Oh
21:53It's not allowed to do that
21:54Finish
21:55Yes
21:56Yes
21:57Go to Bastion
21:58Yes
21:59Yes
22:00Come on
22:01Finish
22:02Finish
22:03Yes
22:04Yes
22:05Go to Bastion
22:06Yes
22:07Yes
22:08Yes
22:09Come on
22:10Yeah
22:11All right
22:13Aggressive
22:14Oh that's it
22:18They went arsed
22:19I fucked it
22:20Yes
22:21Oh
22:22Sam
22:23Sam
22:24Sam
22:25It's your mouth
22:26Oh that's a play right there
22:27Oh
22:28Yeah
22:29Oh
22:31Nice
22:32Ralph's team equalised
22:33Two minutes to go
22:34And it was just like
22:35Oh
22:36Oh
22:40She's grabbing me
22:41That's a charging foul Ralph
22:43A very aggressive Emma
22:44I think you'll find
22:45And I got a penalty
22:47From here
22:48It was out of your mind
22:50And I could feel the pressure was on me
22:57I thought
22:58Oh no
22:59Is this going to be the moment where
23:01They go ahead and nick the win
23:06And then I looked and I realised it was we'll shoot
23:14And then I just sat back and was like
23:16We'll be fine
23:17Oh
23:19Oh
23:24I let my team down
23:26Gutted
23:28Yes
23:29The faith I had
23:30Oh
23:31Woah
23:32It's a draw
23:39Are you knocking all your arms
23:41My arms are like jelly
23:43My god
23:44I think coming into this
23:45Erm
23:46We thought the teamwork would be about
23:48Just you know the wheelchair basketball
23:50Playing as a team
23:51But I think
23:52It's more than that
23:53It's a community
23:54You know they all support each other
23:56And that's you know
23:57That's the real side of teamwork
23:59To make the team work
24:02Oh quality Landon
24:03Quality
24:04Quality
24:05Having a disabled sister myself
24:07I know how important people like Jack are
24:10To disabled people
24:11Because
24:12You know
24:13I've seen it myself
24:14You know
24:15You have to help
24:16Push them forward
24:17To go
24:18No you can do more
24:19You know
24:20Encourage them
24:21We did it with my sister
24:22With my family
24:23And she'd go to respite centres
24:24Where they were like minded people
24:25Help her meet different people
24:27But see that your world isn't so small
24:29You know
24:30You can do more than you think
24:31So
24:32My sister
24:33Would have benefited
24:34And did benefit
24:35From people like Jack
24:36Fucking hell Jack
24:38Wait
24:39Yes
24:40Yes
24:41Yes
24:42Yes
24:43Yes
24:44My arms are killing me
24:45Fun though
24:46Fun though
24:47If I'm in the area again
24:48Can I play again
24:49Yeah
24:50You're welcome
24:51I mean I can't promise I'll be any better
24:52But I enjoyed myself
24:53Hey you will be
24:54You will be
24:55Just the two of us
25:05We can make it if we try
25:08Just the two of us
25:10Just the two of us
25:12Just the two of us
25:14Just the two of us
25:15So go on
25:16How did you find it?
25:17Being in a wheelchair
25:18And getting about
25:19I sort of more appreciated how
25:21Skilled and athletic they are
25:23Obviously empathy is really important
25:25But it was an amazing experience
25:26To come away from it
25:27Instead of going
25:28God life must be really hard for these guys
25:30They must get sick of that shit
25:31Yeah it became very clear very quickly
25:33How athletic they all are
25:35I mean all I could hear all the time
25:37Was you going
25:38How was he so fast?
25:40How was he so fast?
25:41He told me that you like to get a salmon to jizz into your eyes
25:48No I didn't say that
25:49No
25:50I said
25:51I said
25:52These things you can have
25:53The stem cell
25:54So you can have the stem cells
25:56Put into your eyes
25:58Right underneath your eyes
25:59And it just
26:00It reverses the aging process
26:02So it sort of
26:03So it just
26:04Gives you
26:05Elasticity
26:06What's it called?
26:07What's it called?
26:08No I don't know
26:09Elasticity
26:10Elasticity
26:11Pesso
26:12You know
26:13Elasticity
26:14What's it called?
26:15Elasticity
26:16Elasticity
26:17Is that right?
26:18That was close
26:19Hold on
26:20That was close
26:21Elasticity
26:22Yes!
26:23That was like watching Evolution
26:24Don't you want to know what we're doing today?
26:31Well yes I mean this is
26:33This is the part
26:34This is what we're here for
26:35I don't know what we're doing now
26:37And you do
26:38Well
26:39In terms of
26:41Trying to put together everything that we've learned about communication and teamwork
26:46We're going to go and meet a man called Dan Cook
26:48And Dan Cook
26:49Does International Emergency Rescue
26:52It's not his job, he volunteers
26:54He'll be doing his job, going about his life
26:56He'll get a text
26:57There's been a natural disaster somewhere
26:59Somewhere in the world
27:00And he's like
27:01I'm on it
27:02And he's like
27:03Let's go
27:04Drops everything in his life
27:05Gets on a plane and goes
27:06He's basically
27:07Basically a real life hero
27:08We're meeting Dan at Capita Fire Service College in Moreton-on-Marsh
27:12Overseen by Chief Fire Officer Alex Clark
27:15It's the centre for excellence for firefighter training
27:18We do RAF, Army, Navy, Special Forces
27:21It's the elite that come here
27:23And now it's me and Ralph
27:24There's a big difference, you know what I mean?
27:26I've never been involved in anything to do with the word excellence before
27:31Hello folks
27:35Hello
27:36Nice to see you
27:37Thanks
27:38Thanks
27:39Thanks
27:40Well my last 25 years I've been doing international rescue for events like earthquakes
27:45And been to nearly 10,000 calls in the UK for classic firefighting jobs
27:49As well as performing disaster rescue around the world Dan runs a company called Dark Swan
27:55Which provides training exercises for the public to learn teamwork skills
27:59We've worked with a few people, that's Gareth Southgate, kitted up
28:02Why would Gareth Southgate come here?
28:05He was looking at teamwork, what we do with stress, with pressure, how we respond to it
28:10And the really important thing, especially if we're looking at teams, is how people help each other with it
28:15And today your part of the rescue is to act as a two person team in an earthquake
28:21And try and rescue people from a collapsed building
28:24Yeah I'm not good in closed spaces, so I got trapped under a lilo once
28:28Don't laugh
28:29It was a big falling device, I'm glad you found it funny, it was terrifying at the time
28:33I was a kid
28:34But I don't like the thought of feeling, what if I don't get out and the closed spaces
28:39The wisdom of how to manage stress lies in the body, do body stuff first, mental stuff will come second
28:45And even just breathing out, that action itself sort of triggers the relaxation response
28:51But sometimes human touch is so, so important
28:54Squeezing somebody's thumb, I'm okay because I've got somebody else with me, so
28:58Gareth, where's the rub?
28:59I was just about to say to you, I know what you'll be doing
29:0220 years we've known each other, but not that well
29:03Don't be sticking your finger up the arse
29:04They'll be like, I'm very present!
29:06Ralph's here!
29:07There's going to be a lot crawling around, so we're going to put those on
29:09Before we're thrown into the simulation proper, we have to get kitted up and run some practice obstacles
29:14We'll simulate this as the entrance, going through here
29:17Yeah
29:18When you're going in, if there's anything that's sharp or anything like that, call it out so your team mate knows as well
29:23Have we got to go to this thing?
29:25Yeah, yeah
29:26What can you see, Will?
29:27Floor!
29:28Brilliant
29:29Floor!
29:30And bearing in mind, if you hit objects with force, that could collapse the building further on top of you
29:35Don't hit any objects with force, Will
29:37Don't fart
29:38We've reached the area where there is a casualty
29:41What we're going to do now is just quickly go through how you would package them in a stretcher
29:45Blue here, remember blue to shoe, yeah?
29:48Blue shoe
29:49You've got red head
29:50Red head, hey?
29:51Shuffled, there you go, good shuffling, excellent, well done
29:54Right, we need to get these straps, okay?
29:56The best way to remember this is the straps go nips, knackers, knees
30:00Nips, knackers, knees?
30:01Nips, knackers, knees?
30:02Nips, knackers, knees
30:03Wrap this around your nips
30:04How did I get the knees?
30:05You get the knees, I'll do the nips
30:06Nips, knackers and knees
30:08You've got to strap down the nips
30:10Strap down the knackers
30:11And strap down the knees
30:13I'll try when I get home
30:15I'll say, right love
30:16Nips, knackers and knees
30:17And she'll say, piss off
30:18Have a shower first
30:19Sit on down
30:21Time for the mission to begin
30:26When we step through these doors
30:28We're going to put you into the mission, okay?
30:30You're going to be the equivalent of landing in the country
30:32It's had an earthquake, the briefing in there
30:34You're a search and rescue team
30:36Are we looking to find survivors?
30:38That's the key to what our job is today
30:40Yeah, yeah, exactly that
30:41Okay, let's do it
30:42Awesome, let's go
30:45Right
30:49Hi folks
30:51Hi guys
30:52So, you have just arrived in country
30:54Right
30:55The earthquake was a 6.9, it's pretty big
30:57Large amount of buildings down
30:58Lots of people missing
30:59Okay, yeah
31:00Okay
31:01I've got hundreds of these folks here
31:02Who are running stuff on the ground
31:03Hi guys
31:04Welcome to the On-Site Coordination Centre
31:05Thank you very much
31:06About 1,000 reporters missing at the moment
31:08So we really need to start moving
31:09So, this is the edit one
31:11Hi, thank you
31:12I'm Simon
31:13Nice to meet you
31:14Grab a stretcher
31:15Come with me
31:16And go rescue
31:17Alright
31:18Okay
31:19You got that?
31:20Pop this
31:21This is the building
31:22It's a three-storey building collapse
31:28Wow, good
31:30Oh my lord, look at this
31:43I'll take you around to where the rescue workers were, okay?
31:46Okay
31:48Oh my lord, look at this
31:50It was just like a big pile of rubble
31:55And there was, there's like people everywhere covered in dust
31:57And it was like we was in a real-life situation
31:59We went in this way, this is our entry point
32:05Oh
32:12Reports of casualties in there
32:14And, er, drawn a bit of a map
32:16Laura
32:18Is quite close
32:19I've heard her shouting
32:20For the last hour or so
32:22What do you want to do?
32:24Well, I'd say we know Laura's definitely there
32:26So let's get her
32:27Go and get Laura
32:28And I think we leave this out here
32:29Ready off to Simon
32:30If we, er, either someone can bring it in or one comes back
32:34You good?
32:35I've never even started
32:36Right
32:37No, we're going to leave
32:38We'll leave it by the entrance
32:39Leave it by the entrance
32:40Right, let's go
32:41So we're in
32:43We're going in
32:44Oh, it's tight in here
32:45All right
32:46As soon as you come in
32:47You've got two metal rods right by your knees
32:49Okay
32:50I don't like small spaces
32:52I don't
32:53It's just something I avoid
32:54Look out
32:55Me pissing head
32:56Right
32:58Ah
32:59Bollocks
33:00Just
33:01Just
33:02Just keep
33:03This isn't going to work if you keep making me laugh
33:07Making you laugh
33:08I've already whacked me head and me knees
33:11Right, okay
33:12Right, have you got past the metal rods?
33:14Yeah, I'm past the metal rods
33:15Right, we're going into another bigger space here
33:17Yeah
33:18Yeah
33:19Is it a drop there?
33:20I'm just going to go down on my ankle
33:21Okay
33:22Ah
33:23I found somebody
33:24Someone's here
33:25Okay
33:26Yes
33:27Hello?
33:28Can you hear me?
33:29Yeah
33:30Hello?
33:31Can you hear me? What's your name?
33:32Nora
33:33Pardon?
33:34Nora
33:35I can't hear you love
33:36Nora
33:37Nora's here
33:38What do you want?
33:39We found a survivor
33:40Yes, she's called Nora
33:43Laura
33:44Oh, I thought it was Nora
33:46No
33:47No
33:48Do you know if you have any injuries?
33:49No
33:50What?
33:51Unknown if she has any injuries and she's not able to tell us
33:55Yeah, thanks so much for you
33:56My recommendation is keeping up back with that stretcher
33:58She's staying trapped to Laura
33:59Make sure she's alright
34:00Bedside mine would be nice
34:03Have you got any pain anywhere, Laura?
34:05No
34:06Where's he hurting?
34:07My job, especially when Ralph went to get the stretcher was just to try and keep her calm
34:15I feel okay?
34:16No pain?
34:17Yep
34:18Do you know how long you've been here, Laura?
34:20Approximately
34:21Okay
34:22He's here with the stretcher now, Laura
34:24So we're going to
34:25We're going to try and get you out
34:27First things first, Ralph
34:28Let's get this stretcher on
34:30So we're going to want
34:31Hold on, this is
34:32Head, red, feet, blue
34:33What was it?
34:34Head, red, shoes, blue
34:36Oh, that was it
34:37I can say feet, don't lie with blue
34:38Okay, so I think this is what we have to think about
34:40What?
34:41Well, can she be lifted?
34:42How are we going to get her down that pissing hole?
34:44We'll figure that out
34:45But can she be lifted or will that be too painful?
34:47And I don't think we're going to know until
34:49Maybe we sort of try and roll her and see if
34:51Roll her, have you seen the rocks?
34:52They'll be stuck up her ass and everything
34:54You can't just put a rock over there
34:55It's all very well doing it in the room
34:57And remembering this and having a bit of a joke
34:58But once you're in there
34:59Oh, for fuck's sake
35:00You can't breathe and you're sweating
35:02And it is loud and you've got the radio going
35:04It was a bit like, wait, what did they say?
35:06We're not pissing out
35:07Why are we going to get her on there?
35:09Get the straps out from under there
35:10Laura
35:12I'm going to hold you to this way, love, alright?
35:15Okay
35:16One
35:17Lift the legs
35:18Two
35:19Three
35:20Okay
35:21Help yourself
35:22I'm just trying to roll you over a little bit
35:23I've got your legs there
35:24There we go
35:25I've got her under the arms
35:26I've got her under the arms
35:27Alright, remember, you do the
35:28What's it called?
35:29What was it called?
35:30Feet
35:31Nips, knackers
35:32That's it
35:33The whole nips, knackers and knees thing
35:34Stuff like that genuinely really came in handy
35:36It's like, right, let's just stop
35:37Think
35:38Work methodically
35:39How do we do this?
35:40What's the best thing?
35:41What order do we do it in?
35:42Oh, fuck your order
35:43I don't remember any of that shit
35:44Take your time
35:46Just slowly
35:47Slow and steady
35:50That's it
35:51That's it
35:52Lift that
35:53I've got her
35:54There we go
35:56Okay
35:57That was good
35:58Rest your legs on the ledge
35:59You climb in
36:00And I'll pass her through to you
36:02Okay
36:03Pissing out
36:04Okay, you ready?
36:05Yeah
36:06Push
36:07Yeah
36:08I've got her
36:09Watch your head
36:10Watch your head
36:11There we go
36:12Alright, I'm down at the feet
36:13Right
36:14You push at the same time as I lift
36:15Are you ready?
36:16Yep
36:17One, two, three, go
36:18Fucking
36:19Oh my
36:20Jesus Christ
36:22Go
36:23Two
36:24Go
36:25Go
36:26Yeah, well done
36:27Well done
36:28Well done
36:29Okay
36:30We're out
36:31Feet are out
36:32Hold up
36:33Right
36:34Drew, can you go?
36:35Okay
36:36Can you guys take a
36:37Between the four of you?
36:38Ready?
36:39Brace, lift, go
36:40Right, how you doing guys?
36:41Alright, yeah
36:42Excellent
36:43Laurie's going to be taken out
36:44We've got a medivac coming over over there
36:45If you can get back in
36:46There's been a few aftershocks in the area
36:48And we're really a bit conscious
36:49My colleague can't get out
36:51Nick took this orange line
36:53In with him
36:54Yep
36:55I'm thinking of getting in here
36:56Yeah
36:57Going for Nick
36:58Yeah
36:59Okay, all good?
37:00All good, really?
37:01You ready, Will?
37:02No, you go back in
37:03Do you want me to go first or you?
37:04Hold on, no
37:05It's alright, I don't mind
37:06Let's go
37:07Let's just get it done
37:08I will have a go at anything
37:10But how I deal with it
37:11Can be rocky
37:12Ralph is a straight line
37:14He'll deal with it
37:15In his own way
37:16Yeah, I'm coming
37:18I'm right behind you
37:19He has a balance about him
37:22I'm a bit jealous of him in a way
37:24Because I'm highs and lows
37:26Highs and lows
37:27And he's just
37:28And I think that's why he's good at things
37:30Stand on it, I stood on it
37:31Stand on it, I stood on it
37:32Okay
37:33Right
37:35Oh, shit, this is tight, Ralph
37:36Keep your arse down in here
37:38Alright, we're coming, Nick
37:45This is really tight, Ralph
37:48Can I give you a minute?
37:52This is really tight
37:53Oh, God
37:56I can't see, shit
37:58Oh, God, hang on
37:59Give me a minute
38:01Are you going on?
38:02I'm alright, yeah, it's just a bit darkened
38:03Take a sec
38:04No, mate, it's a bit
38:05Hold on, just take a sec
38:06Oh, God, I can't hardly see
38:07It's horrible
38:08I couldn't really see much
38:09All I could see was the soles of his boots
38:11Because obviously I couldn't really see much
38:12And it was really cramped and everything
38:14I didn't know how
38:16How serious it was
38:18Oh, my God, I just can't breathe
38:19Just give me a bit
38:20I started to panic a bit
38:21I obviously felt I couldn't breathe
38:24It was like
38:25I'd have to hold my breath
38:27And then
38:28Look for the next space to breathe
38:29Like I was underwater
38:30That's what it felt like
38:31I guess
38:32Oh, God, this is awful
38:33Oh, wow, this is awful
38:35Why
38:38I'm just breathing
38:39Because I start to get a bit panicked, mate
38:40That's all
38:41Oh, fuck
38:42Okay, listen
38:43Well, well, well, well
38:44Just remember your breathing
38:45You all right?
38:46No, no, mate
38:47Just take some breathing
38:48Touch your hands together
38:49Just remember your breathing
38:50I'm getting a bit fucking panicked
38:51I know, don't
38:52You all right?
38:53You all right?
38:54I can't breathe properly
38:55Hold on, hold on, hold on
38:56Hold on
38:57Here you are
38:58Just take a sec
38:59Just take a second, we're all good
39:00Yeah
39:01We're all good, don't
39:02We'll get to him
39:03We'll get to him
39:04We'll get to him
39:05Bless Ralph, he's done this for me a few times
39:07You know, he is there for me
39:08And he had his hand on my ankle
39:10And I remember him saying there
39:11If he just
39:12Even just has someone's hand on you
39:14Can calm you down
39:15Just have a little
39:16Just breathe
39:18Fucking hell, this is awful
39:20You all right?
39:21There's no rush
39:22Just breathe, you all right?
39:23You all right?
39:24Like I said, you just have to try and rationalise your head
39:25It's your mind over your body
39:27Because your body starts panicking
39:28It's weird
39:29But yeah
39:30It is, you know
39:31It was there for me
39:33Yeah
39:34Yeah, you got this
39:38There you go, you've done well now
39:39It's all right
39:40It's okay
39:41Oh, no
39:42Oh, no
39:43Get rid of you
39:44Come on
39:49As much as it would be funny for me to be like
39:51What was he like?
39:52It was useless
39:53It wasn't
39:54It was
39:55I believed in him
39:57Actually
39:58I did believe in him
40:01Fucking hell
40:02All right, I'm clear
40:04All right
40:07All right
40:08Nick
40:09Is that you, Nick?
40:10All right, mate
40:11I'm coming
40:12By the time I got into Nick
40:14Will was already
40:15Just giving the guy reassurance
40:16Telling him
40:17Telling him it's all right
40:18All right, Nick
40:19All right, all right, mate
40:20Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
40:21And he was just kind of
40:22He's so personable, Will
40:24He's so winning and personable
40:25I was like
40:26That's absolutely him at his best
40:28Just keep those spirits up
40:30Let me clear some of this off you, mate
40:31Let me clear some of this off you
40:33I
40:34I
40:35I
40:36I was dead proud
40:37I was so proud of my mate
40:38I came around and was like
40:39Yeah, that's my boy
40:40I hadn't realised at that time
40:41That he nearly broke
40:42Nick's fucking leg
40:43By standing on it
40:45This leg
40:46Oh, that one
40:47Oh, that one
40:48Oh, that one
40:49Oh, oh, oh, oh
40:50Oh, oh, oh, oh
40:51Sorry, sorry about that
40:52Sorry, Nick
40:53I stood on his injured leg
40:54And I stood on the wood
40:55It was on his leg
40:56And he went
40:57And I went
40:58That's the leg
40:59It's hurt then
41:00I stood on the pole
41:01It was on his leg
41:03It felt
41:04Like we communicated really well
41:06He was constantly checking in on me too
41:07Constantly checking
41:08I was all right
41:09Constantly
41:10Looking out for me
41:11Telling me what was coming
41:12Ah, well done, Nick
41:13Yes, mate
41:14Well done
41:24That was great
41:25Epic
41:26What you do
41:27That's incredible
41:28Massive respect for what you do
41:29I couldn't do this in real life
41:31No, I just couldn't do it
41:33Thank God they exist
41:35Because they saved lives
41:37You was in the hole
41:38And it was really good actually
41:39Because you did everything that we discussed
41:41Yeah
41:42And you stopped
41:43Yeah
41:44And just reflected
41:45And just sorted your breathing out
41:47Spoke to yourself
41:48You verbalised everything that you were feeling
41:50Yeah
41:51And then went, right, I've got this
41:52And then just carried on
41:53I had chills
41:54I had chills
41:55It was a great moment
41:57You got through it
41:58So it was very impressive
42:01I mean, we started off
42:03Driving tanks
42:04Blindfolded
42:05Doing animal noises
42:06And then wheelchair basketball
42:08Meeting some amazing people there
42:10Into crawling through small spaces
42:11Rescuing people
42:12I mean
42:14But do you know what I'm learning about me and Ralph
42:16Is we're a good team, you know
42:17We work well together
42:19I mean, we have our banter
42:20And we do
42:21We have healthy competition between each other
42:22Which is good
42:24But when it comes to it
42:25We're there for each other
42:28Yeah
42:30Yeah
42:31And I think that's a special thing
42:33Whoa!
42:38I feel like a hero
42:39Where have all the good men gone?
42:40And where are all the gods?
42:41Where's the streetwise hercules?
42:42And why do I know all the words?
42:43What's happened?
42:44I need a hero!
42:45I'm holding on for a hero till the end of the night
42:49He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be tough and he's gotta be fresh from the fight
42:54I need a hero!
42:55I need a hero!
42:56I'm holding on for a hero till the end of the night
43:00He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be tough and he's gotta be fresh from the fight
43:06I need a hero!
43:08I need a hero!
43:12Ooh, no, no, no, no, no
43:16It looks like a haunted house
43:19There's something right there
43:20Right there?
43:21There is
43:22Did you see that?
43:23I need a hero!
43:24I need a hero!
43:25I'm holding on for a hero till the morning's light
43:31He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be through
43:34And he's gotta be brighter than life
43:37I'm still alive
43:39Do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do
43:48Ah, ah
43:50Somewhere after midnight In my wild fantasy
