Following the retirement of Nicholas Pooran, cricket analyst Fazeer Mohammed says it's a reflection of the state of West Indies cricket.

Even though Mohammed says the real reason is unknown, retiring at the age of 29 with lots to offer is somewhat baffling.

00:00It's inevitable that many would provide their views after Niklas Puran announced his retirement from international cricket.
00:06That includes top cricket analyst Fazir Mohamed, who says the diminutive left-handed batsman is going to be missed.
00:12Niklas Puran's decision to retire from West Indies' duty, essentially in all formats, although of course he is primarily a white-ball cricketer,
00:21is a loss because of his tremendous ability, his potential, his tendency to really change the course of a match with spectacular innings.
00:32At the same time, Mohamed is aware that Puran's average in T20 internationals is 26.14 from 106 appearances.
00:40On the other hand, his ODI average is a healthier 39.66 from 61 matches,
00:45but Puran last appeared in the longer of the two white-ball formats in July 2023.
00:51As such, the Trinidad-based cricket analyst feels Puran has not lived up to his potential.
00:57When you look at his record as far as influencing results for the West Indies,
01:03it really isn't as effective as one would have hoped.
01:06The fact is that the spectacular innings of Niklas Puran in between some rather ordinary performances
01:14means that at the end of the day, he has not really impacted West Indies' performances on a consistently upward trend.
01:23Mohamed says the explosive batter's absence from the team is not going to make a difference in terms of results.
01:29He says even though a reason for Puran's retirement is yet to be given,
01:33it shows where West Indies cricket has reached.
01:36When you have someone at the age of 29 who is essentially in the prime of his cricketing life
01:43to leave the game, to leave West Indies cricket and focus on the franchise formats,
01:48as lucrative as it is, for such a thing to happen suggests that there's something going on
01:54in the background of West Indies cricket.
01:56There is that feeling that many of these franchise players are disaffected in some way or the other
02:03in their relationship with Cricket West Indies, not just this administration or the previous one,
02:09but definitely the one before that as well, going all the way back to the Dave Cameron administration.
02:14Puran last appeared in a T20 International in December 2024,
02:19which saw the West Indies losing the series to Bangladesh in the Caribbean.
02:23So could that be part of the reason for such a decision?
02:25There were certainly some rumblings along the way towards the end of last year
02:30and that disappointing run towards the end of last year
02:33and the 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh,
02:38which suggested that something wasn't right,
02:41whether it involved Nicholas Puran directly or the composition of the team
02:45or the administration or the hierarchy of the team,
02:49including the coach and the captain, we can only be speculating.
02:53But the feeling was that there was something that wasn't happening the right way.
02:57Based on all this, Mohamed is by no means shocked following Puran's decision to retire,
03:03but says it's very disappointing.
