We are a few weeks away from the 50th anniversary of the West Indies winning the inaugural ODI World Cup.

And just for the record, World Cup matches were 60 overs and not 50 at that time.

Speaking of which, cricket analyst Fazeer Mohammed recently started doing a 50-day countdown on the historic title on a website and talks about the significance of such a milestone.
Transcript
00:00And Australia have lost their 8th wicket.
00:04In June 1975, the West Indies won the inaugural ODI World Cup after getting the better of Australia at Lords by 17 runs.
00:11Captain Clive Lloyd played a key role by smashing 102 in that match.
00:15Fifty years later, revered cricket analyst Fazir Mohammed gives his take on how important that achievement was for the Caribbean.
00:22That first World Cup success by the West Indies men's team in 1975
00:27is obviously significant in its own right to win a World Cup, a first major ICC tournament in men's competition.
00:35Clearly, what it indicated is that not only was West Indies cricket pretty close or at the top of the tree
00:42because they had been dominant in the 1960s as well, but it heralded a period of supreme dominance
00:48the likes of what we've never seen again in the international game
00:52with that period from 1988 to 1995, playing unbeaten in test match series.
00:57Of course, the West Indies went on to successfully defend the World Cup in 1979.
01:02At the moment, Mohammed has his work cut out for him on a daily basis.
01:06That's because he makes a contribution on the 1975 achievement on a local website.
01:11The series has started. It started on May the 2nd. It goes all the way to June 21st.
01:16And the website that you can see. Follow the series. Read the articles in this series, wired868.com
01:25Well, in this 50-day countdown, you can really look forward to a lot of information.
01:30It's not particularly lengthy, each piece. In fact, for those who are accustomed to really lengthy stories
01:36about every single thing in the game of cricket, you might actually be disappointed.
01:41The intention really is to have it almost like a bite-sized bit of information.
01:45Because remember, it's running for 50 days.
01:48The information on the website would surprise many.
01:51For example, was the first Cricket World Cup a men's or women's tournament?
01:56You're going to get a lot of background information. The first World Cup itself, which was a women's, not a men's.
02:02The first limited of a cricket tournament, which wasn't in England, but was in another country, was actually in India.
02:08You'll get profiles of the entire squad that represented the West Indies.
02:12There might be some surprise, surprise names in the squad.
02:15Mohamed says it's quite painful that West Indies cricket is no longer a force to be reckoned with.
02:20An example being the team's absence from the 2023 men's ODI World Cup.
