00:00Brothers, we are in this new session, another session of the Johannine writings.
00:29In the last session we left Jesus at the Jordan, do you remember?
00:36Probably so, and they will also think about the tension and violence that the Jews want to use to kill Jesus.
00:47Now we find ourselves facing the death of Jesus' friend, Lazarus.
00:54This is one of the most significant passages in the public life of Jesus.
01:00With the death of Lazarus, Jesus himself draws closer to his own death.
01:06Let's read and encounter this Jesus who wants to bring us even closer to faith.
01:13But before we look at this, we must look at the encounters that precede the resurrection of Lazarus.
01:21Let's look at Jesus' attitude towards the disciples and also his apparent absence to prevent the death of his friend, the one he loves so much.
01:35And Jesus will meet Lazarus' sisters, Martha and Mary, in a particularly beautiful way.
01:43Let's read the first six verses and discover this call to faith that Jesus makes to his disciples.
01:52There was a sick man named Lazarus, a native of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
02:01This Mary, who was the sister of Lazarus, was the one who poured perfume on the Lord's feet and dried them with her hair.
02:09So the two sisters sent word to Jesus, saying, "Lord, your dear friend is sick."
02:17When Jesus heard this, he said, "This sickness will not end in death, but will serve to show the glory of God and also the glory of the Son of God."
02:30Although Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus very much, when he was told that Lazarus was sick,
02:38He stayed two more days in the place where he was.
02:44Brothers, these first six verses serve as an introduction.
02:49This is where the evangelist himself presents his scenario and the characters who will be involved.
02:57The appearance of these three completely new characters in the Gospel of John is very special.
03:06The presence of Martha, Mary, and her brother Lazarus had never been mentioned to us.
03:15These three brothers live in Bethany, says John in verse 1.
03:21And in fact, John himself had told us that Lazarus was sick.
03:27And then we are introduced to his sisters, Martha and Mary.
03:34We know these sisters well from the episode in the Gospel of Luke, where they welcome Jesus into their home.
03:44Marta is busy with household chores.
03:47And Mary at his feet listening to Jesus.
03:52This can be found in Luke 10, verses 38 to 42.
03:57Now, in Luke, Lazarus is not mentioned.
04:02Now, returning to the Gospel of John.
04:05In verse 2, John gives us a comment.
04:09In some Bibles, this comment is found in parentheses.
04:15What does Juan say?
04:16Says,
04:17Here Juan tells us about something that already happened.
04:29In fact, he is speaking to us in the past tense.
04:31But, and this is very important, he has not narrated this moment to us.
04:38We, who already know the Gospel of John, know that the moment called the anointing of Bethany is coming.
04:46But, not until chapter 12.
04:49In other words, the next chapter.
04:52So why is Juan giving us this note?
04:55It's as if he were saying, look, look what I'm going to tell you.
04:59But I haven't told you yet.
05:03Okay, we'll leave that aside for now.
05:07It will be necessary to solve, to return to this enigma.
05:12In verse 3, these sisters send someone, an anonymous messenger, to tell Jesus that their brother is sick.
05:21And they do it by saying, the one you love is sick.
05:25Jesus responds to this message in verse 4,
05:29saying that this disease does not have the ultimate purpose of causing the definitive death of the brother, of Lazarus.
05:39Rather, it has another purpose.
05:43This is like the means by which the glory of God will be manifested.
05:48This glory of God is the glorification of the Son of God.
05:55What is this glorification of the Son of God?
05:59The disciples had already seen the glory of Jesus in Cana.
06:03They remember him.
06:05Chapter 2, verse 11.
06:06Now, as readers of the Gospel, we, in reading it, are waiting for another miracle, another sign that will be the occasion to see the glory of God.
06:29But what is the glory of the Son of God?
06:35We had already seen it, and from chapter 7, in the context of the Feast of Tabernacles,
06:44John says there is no spirit, that the spirit had not been given.
06:50Because?
06:52Because Jesus had not yet been glorified, John points out in chapter 7, verse 39.
07:02And in the controversy with the Jews in chapter 8, Jesus tells them that his Father will glorify him.
07:11I refer you to read chapter 8, verses 52 to 59.
07:16And we know that Jesus' death is at his hour.
07:23This theme of time is very important in John's theology.
07:28It is the moment of passion, the passion of Jesus, but presented as his hour, his moment, the hour of Jesus.
07:38And this is the very moment in which He will be lifted up from the earth.
07:48This is also the typically Johannine way of presenting death on the cross.
07:54So, it's as if all the events that are happening and that will happen around Lazarus,
08:05They bring all these themes together, they begin to unite and allow us to understand them with full clarity.
08:13From the divine point of view, the death of Jesus is his glory.
08:17It's like a cone, it's like a funnel where all the issues come to converge.
08:24They will finally come together, and then we will be able to see this glory of the Son of God.
08:32Mysteriously, in verses 5 and 6, we are told that despite the love Jesus has for these three brothers,
08:42He decides to stay two more days where he was, and after those days, he invites his disciples to go to Judea.
08:55The disciples object in verse 8 and remind him that the Jews wanted to appeal to him.
09:04Okay, let's read this continuation then, and see how Jesus' disciples react when Jesus himself invites them to go to Bethany.
09:18to meet Martha and Mary.
09:21Let's read verses 9 through 16.
09:24Then he added,
09:43Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm going to wake him up.
09:49The disciples said to him,
09:51Lord, if he has fallen asleep, it is a sign that he will be healed.
09:55But what Jesus was telling them was that Lazarus had died,
09:59while the disciples thought he had referred to natural sleep.
10:04Then Jesus told them plainly,
10:07Lazarus is dead, and I am glad I was not there, because that way it is better for you, so that you may believe, but let us see it.
10:17Then Thomas, who was called the twin, said to the other disciples,
10:23We too will go, to die with him.
10:26When discussing the critical and worrying aspect of the trip,
10:32Jesus returns with the themes of light and darkness.
10:37We had already heard these themes in the context of the Feast of Tabernacles,
10:43when Jesus himself says he is the light of the world.
10:49I refer you to chapter 8, verse 12 and following.
10:55And also in the case of the person born blind,
10:59although we didn't dedicate a specific session to it,
11:02in the context of these classes of Johannine writings,
11:05I'm sending them to read chapter 9.
11:10especially verse 4 and the following ones,
11:13where Jesus returns to the theme of light.
11:17And here, in John 11,
11:20Jesus invites the disciples to,
11:24such as during daylight hours,
11:2612 hours of daylight,
11:29He who follows him does not walk at night,
11:33He does not walk in darkness,
11:35then he cannot stumble.
11:38He does not stumble because he is the light of the world,
11:41That is, Jesus,
11:43light their way.
11:45That's what verse 9 will say.
11:47All of this is like a preparation.
11:52so that the disciples,
11:55in the days to come,
11:56in the moments that follow,
11:59and especially in the event
12:02of the resurrection of Lazarus,
12:04be prepared.
12:06Let them walk in this light.
12:10What are these moments?
12:12What are these days?
12:13What will happen after the resurrection of Lazarus?
12:17The days of Christ's passion.
12:21And this will become clearer little by little.
12:23in the reading of this chapter 11.
12:27Then Jesus informs them
12:30who will wake up Lazarus,
12:33verse 11.
12:35And the disciples reply that,
12:37if he is asleep,
12:38Well, that's a sign that he's going to recover soon.
12:41Sign of health,
12:43that health will come.
12:44Verse 12.
12:46And here, once again,
12:48We found something we've already seen.
12:50in the Gospel of John,
12:52the difference in dialogue,
12:54the difference in level.
12:56Jesus speaks of mysterious realities,
12:58divine,
12:59and their interlocutors understand
13:02very human realities,
13:04very everyday realities.
13:06Consequently,
13:08Jesus tells them very clearly,
13:11verses 14 and 15,
13:13Lazarus is dead,
13:15And I'm happy for you.
13:16had I not been there
13:17so that they can believe.
13:20But let's go along with him.
13:23Therefore,
13:24now,
13:25We understand the two-day wait
13:28that Jesus takes
13:30before being determined
13:32go to Bethany.
13:34This delay of Jesus
13:36It is for the faith of the disciples.
13:41And this trip to Bethany
13:43He does it knowing it's dangerous.
13:47And of course,
13:49Jesus does not do it
13:50due to human need.
13:51In fact,
13:52It doesn't.
13:52by Lazarus,
13:54but,
13:55further
13:55divinely,
13:58He does it
13:58to fulfill
14:00the Father's will.
14:02It depends
14:03the desire
14:04of God the Father
14:05that Jesus
14:06goes to the place of danger.
14:08So that?
14:09To perform
14:10his will.
14:11And what is
14:12the Father's will
14:14that the disciples
14:16create
14:16in Jesus
14:17thank you
14:19to the resurrection
14:20of Lazarus
14:21of sleep
14:22of death?
14:23And here
14:24we can ask ourselves
14:26to make a life,
14:28to apply
14:28this text,
14:30this dialogue
14:30of Jesus
14:31with the disciples
14:32in our lives,
14:34because
14:35Jesus waits
14:37two days?
14:38Because
14:39wait
14:39two long
14:41days?
14:42What is it that
14:43we can learn
14:44of these
14:44two days
14:45waiting
14:46of Jesus?
14:48Certainly,
14:49Jesus
14:50take
14:50your time
14:51to perform
14:52this miracle,
14:53This signal,
14:54miracle in quotes.
14:57This
14:57He owes us
14:58to clarify
14:59about the action
15:00of Jesus
15:01in our lives.
15:03When we asked
15:04something to Jesus,
15:05when we asked
15:06something to God
15:06in our prayer,
15:08What do we want?
15:08Let him do it
15:09immediately.
15:11Let's be honest
15:12with ourselves,
15:13we want,
15:14already.
15:16But,
15:16What exactly is it?
15:17What did we ask for?
15:19The miracle?
15:21Or faith
15:22and its action
15:23in our lives?
15:25Asking for miracles
15:26bye
15:27It's easy,
15:29but,
15:29have faith
15:30in the author
15:31of miracles,
15:33that
15:33it is already
15:34the difficult part.
15:35and it is still
15:36more difficult
15:37ask
15:38bye
15:40to the author
15:40of miracles
15:41intervene
15:42in our lives,
15:44in their own way,
15:45in time,
15:46according to his wishes,
15:48according to his will
15:49and for that same reason
15:52increase us,
15:54grow
15:55in faith,
15:57as is the case
15:57here
15:58of the disciples.
15:59Good,
16:01Let's stay
16:01with this question,
16:03With this reflection,
16:05if in our prayer
16:06we ask for miracles
16:08or the intervention
16:09of Jesus
16:09in our lives.
16:11Thank you!
