There has been a 56 per cent drop in violent crimes this month.


This was revealed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Junior Benjamin during a press briefing on Friday morning at the police administration building in Port of Spain.

00:00DCP Benjamin notes that since a state of emergency was declared on December 30th, the TTPS has
00:05conducted 1,813 operations which have resulted in the arrests of 1,423 persons.
00:14Police have also seized 70 firearms, 1,490 rounds of assorted ammunition, and 159 kilograms
00:22of marijuana.
00:24However, in terms of violent crimes, Benjamin explained that the data showed that it was
00:29down by more than 50%.
00:31The murder toll stood at 30 up to this morning, with the figure for the same period last year
00:37being 44, an estimated 30% reduction.
00:42He also says that there are 27 reports of woundings and shootings this year when compared
00:47to 57 for the same period last year, 32 reports of sexual offences compared to 91 last year,
00:5427 reports of kidnappings against 11 last year, and 98 reports of robberies compared
00:59to 239 such reports for the same period in 2024.
01:22He says that even gang-related homicides have decreased by an estimated 50%.
01:40He says that the TTPS is of the firm opinion that if this continues along its current course,
01:46the public can expect to see a further reduction in crime.
01:50To that end, DCP Benjamin is encouraging all law-abiding citizens to work with the
01:55police.
