00:00Parents are the first line of defense in crime prevention, according to Minister of Homeland Security, Roger Alexander.
00:08Parents should be held accountable for some of the things I see, because they fail to bring up their children
00:16in the right way.
00:18Charity begins at home and ends abroad. You know what that means?
00:21Whatever you behave or your conduct is at home, what you have learned, what you have taught, you will take
00:25it onto the streets.
00:27Speaking to reporters at the Pinal Fire Station on Wednesday, where six new fire tenders were handed over to the
00:34Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service,
00:36he said later this week his ministry begins the rollout of a parenting workshop.
00:42We are launching on Friday the first stage of the prevention against crime, which begins with the parent.
00:51Everybody relying on somebody else to make excuses.
00:53What about the parent? The parent is the foundation from where everything came from.
00:58You must go back there to start, and that is exactly what we are doing now.
01:02So we have a parenting workshop that begins on Friday, and we are going forward from that.
01:07This month marks one year in office for the UNC government, and so one year with him at the helm
01:13of Homeland Security.
01:15Minister Alexander says he's happy with the work he's done so far.
01:19I am very pleased because, you know, when you see institution that was left to rot, and now you're giving
01:26them life, you're breathing life into them again, it's enough for me.
01:29I know one thing, though. I will not leave the institutions in the same manner in which I met them.
01:37There must be improvement.
01:39For nine years or more, you were left wanting. You were left there, unprotected.
01:47And now there's a government who's trying to do something about it.
01:52Again, it's not a miracle, you know. You can't get up one morning and crime is gone.
01:56Everything is a process, and that process takes time.
01:59Cindy Ragubantika Singh, TV6 News.
