Time to switch sports to Karate...

Local Karatekas got some tips as two world-class karate athletes were in the country to impart their knowledge to athletes aiming to reach the Olympic level. They were given guidance on methods to improve their Katas and Kumite. The event was hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Karate Association. Serjio du Four has the details.

00:00 The sport karate development camp took place at St. Mary's College in Port of
00:05 Spain and approximately 55 participants were engaged. US Committee champion Tom
00:10 Scott was one of the chief instructors. He captained the USA team and won
00:15 medals at the Pan Am and World level and also took part in the Olympics.
00:20 Organizers say the camp was open to all ranks. National kata athlete Dominic
00:25 Wilkes explained some of the benefits of taking part in the initiative. The main
00:29 things they got from the camp were how what goes into performing those kata's
00:34 for Olympic competitions. There's a lot more emphasis on athleticism, speed, power
00:40 and a certain amount of flair compared to traditional training which usually
00:47 just emphasizes you know strong basic foundations, application for self-defense
00:54 and those type of things. Chief instructor at the TNT Karate Association
00:58 Dr. Nicole Lambie says the aim is also to boost participation in the sport.
01:03 Primarily we were aiming to boost local or local level for the National
01:11 Federation so that would have we had sent invitations to all all schools even
01:19 those outside of karate like Taekwondo and so on. The participants got valuable
01:24 insight into what judges look for including focus, grace and power. Being
01:29 guided by the WKF competition rules they look for stances, techniques, transitions
01:42 your strength, speed, balance, they look at your what we call zanchin, your focus,
01:53 how you breathe right and your what we call kimi as well, your body connection
02:02 and things like that. There were international participants from
02:06 Suriname, Barbados and Grenada. They are all aiming to represent their
02:11 respective countries at the highest level. In addition to the World
02:14 Championships which is a WKF event, aside from the Olympics and the
02:21 Commonwealth Games, karate is part of all of the other multi-sport games that
02:27 the Olympic, the International Olympic Committee hosts. So the CAC games, the
02:32 Pan American Games, it's part of World Combat Games and also the World Games.
02:39 Participants also got advice from sports science presenters from sport
02:43 company and other private entities.
