a new challenge awaits 52 local gymnasts who are hoping to make their mark at the CARIFTA Artistic Gymnastics Championships. It's been a tricky journey so far for the athletes who earned their spots at the national trials. The participants may be young at heart, but they were very expressive about their intentions for the tournament ahead.
Transcript
00:00After the trials comes the inaugural Karivta Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
00:05We asked a few of the representatives how they feel about their chances in the tournament.
00:09Yes, I'm looking forward to Jamaica, but I'm a bit nervous because I've actually never done this in my life.
00:15This is my first international competition.
00:18I felt very excited and I was speechless once I heard about it.
00:23What did you tell your parents?
00:26I screamed and I told them I am very proud of myself and they told me they are proud of me.
00:32Are you looking forward to medals in that competition?
00:36Yes.
00:38Are you nervous ahead of that competition?
00:43Not really.
00:44Not really? That's a good sign. Why are you not nervous? Have you been practicing?
00:49Yes, and I'm sure I'll get some medals.
00:52How was the trials?
00:53The trials were good.
00:56What did you enjoy most about the trials?
01:00Everything was great, I guess, but it was fun also.
01:07What was your favourite routine?
01:09My favourite routine was the bars routine.
01:13So you've gotten accustomed to the bars at this point in time?
01:16Yes, because that's my favourite apparatus and my best apparatus.
01:21How is it balancing gymnastics and school?
01:24It's hard, but I get through it.
01:27What's hard about it?
01:29Because it's being in Standard 5 and I see a coming up school and gym training hard,
01:36trying to bring home first place, which I did that.
01:39I hope that I come first place and I come back home with the gold medal, hopefully.
01:45But I hope that I am able to do my routines to my best ability and that I will be able to learn my skills
01:51and God will help me through this.
01:54So what have you been saying to yourself over this period of time
01:58as positive reaffirmation ahead of the competition?
02:03I've been saying that I've got this, I can do this, I've been practising this,
02:08I've been doing this since I was small, I can do this step by step.
02:14What are you looking forward to the most?
02:17To win.
02:19Anything else in terms of competition, other athletes, seeing how they perform?
02:24No.
02:26No.
02:28What do you think is key to success in this competition?
02:31Just staying focused and not getting overwhelmed and having fun.
02:37The competition takes place on the 29th and 30th of November.
