From November 7, 2026, text from Grok's API carries an invisible watermark, switched on by default. 🔍
xAI's developer documentation for Output Watermarking, last updated on October 31, 2026, says:
• Starting November 7, 2026, responses from seven Grok models are watermarked by default: grok-4.7, grok-4.6, grok-4.5, grok-4.3, grok-4.20-reasoning, grok-4.20-non-reasoning and grok-4.20-multi-agent.
• It applies on every xAI API endpoint, including the Responses API and the Chat Completions API. xAI says it watermarks text model output to comply with the EU AI Act.
• The watermark is not visible: it slightly shapes which tokens the model picks, so it adds no characters, markup or hidden text. Detection is statistical, and longer text gives a stronger signal. Access to detection is granted by application.
• No code changes are needed. The x-watermark: true response header shows that a response was watermarked.
• Team admins can opt out per model in the xAI Console, but must confirm that a legal exception applies; some models may be locked on.
• xAI says watermarking does not change response quality or speed.
Crypto Briefing reported the change on October 31, 2026.
