Four people just spent 378 days living on "Mars" without ever leaving Earth. 🔴
On October 31, 2026, the four volunteers of NASA's CHAPEA Mission 2 (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) exited their simulated Mars habitat at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, per NASA.
The crew (per NASA):
• Ross Elder, mission commander
• Ellen Ellis, medical officer
• Matthew Montgomery, science officer
• James Spicer, flight engineer
They entered their 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat on October 19, 2025. Inside, NASA says, they grew crops, managed limited resources, worked through communication delays and carried out suited, simulated spacewalks on a simulated Martian surface. They spoke with their families only by email, with a Mars-like communication delay.
What's next: NASA says the crew begins two weeks of post-mission evaluations and debriefs. The health and performance data can help NASA plan for long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars.
