Godzilla Minus Zero's trailer features scenes which may leave the audiences HEARTBROKEN! There are plenty of ways a Godzilla film can leave you feeling absolutely devastated.

We’ve seen entire cities reduced to rubble, thousands of people caught in the middle of a kaiju attack, and Godzilla himself representing the horrors of nuclear warfare. But looking at everything we’ve seen so far from Godzilla Minus Zero, I genuinely think this could end up being one of the most heartbreaking entries in the franchise.

And that’s because we’re returning to characters who have already been through hell. Koichi survived the war, Noriko survived Godzilla’s attack on Ginza, and Akiko gave them both a reason to look towards the future. By the end of Minus One, there was finally some hope that these characters could build a happy life together. But now, that future could be at risk all over again.

With Godzilla returning, Ghidorah entering the picture, and some rather worrying questions surrounding Noriko’s survival, there’s a lot here that could take this story in a genuinely tragic direction. So today, we’re looking at why Godzilla Minus Zero could be one of the most heartbreaking films in the franchise.

Welcome to DangerVille.

Godzilla Minus Zero picks up in 1949, two years after the tumultuous events of Godzilla Minus One, and continues the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.

00:00There are plenty of ways a Godzilla film can leave you feeling absolutely devastated.
00:05We've seen entire cities reduced to rubble, thousands of people caught in the middle of a kaiju attack,
00:10and Godzilla himself representing the horrors of nuclear warfare.
00:14But looking at everything we've seen so far from Godzilla Minus Zero,
00:17I genuinely think this could end up being one of the most heartbreaking entries in the franchise.
00:23And that's because we're returning to the characters who have already been through hell.
00:26Koichi survived the war, Noriko survived Godzilla's attack on Ginza,
00:30and Akiko gave them both a reason to look towards the future.
00:34By the end of Minus One, there was finally some hope that these characters could build a happy life together,
00:39but now, that future could be at risk all over again.
00:43With Godzilla returning, Ghidorah entering the picture,
00:46and some rather worrying questions surrounding Noriko's survival,
00:49there's a lot here that could take the story in a genuinely tragic direction.
00:53So today, we're looking at why Godzilla Minus Zero could be one of the most heartbreaking films in the franchise.
01:00I'm Yemea Alistair, and welcome to Dangerville.
01:06One of the most notable things about the Minus Zero trailer is just how hopeless everything feels.
01:12In the first film, Koichi was struggling with enormous guilt after surviving the war.
01:16He believed he didn't deserve to live when so many others had died.
01:20And for so much of the story, he couldn't see a future for himself.
01:24His relationship with Noriko and the responsibility of raising Akiko gradually changed that.
01:29He finally had people worth living for, and by the end of the film,
01:32he had started to overcome the guilt that had been haunting him.
01:36But from what we've seen so far, that hard-earned happiness could be about to fall apart.
01:41The characters in the trailer look exhausted and terrified,
01:44facing something they have absolutely no idea how to overcome.
01:47We don't know the context of every shot, of course, but there's a real sense that Japan has given up.
01:53And when you think about what these people have already experienced, that's pretty devastating.
01:57They've spent years trying to recover from a war that destroyed their country.
02:01And they were only just beginning to rebuild their lives when Godzilla arrived.
02:06Somehow, they survived that nightmare and found a reason to keep going.
02:10Now they could be facing the same terror all over again.
02:13I think that gives the sequel a particularly strong emotional foundation.
02:16We already know what these characters have lost,
02:19and we've seen how difficult it was for them to find happiness again,
02:22which makes this new catastrophe all the more devastating.
02:25Godzilla Minus One gave us one of the most horrifying Godzilla attacks ever put on screen,
02:30where ordinary civilians desperately tried to escape as Godzilla tore through the city.
02:35But Minus Era looks as though it could take the human consequences of these actions even further.
02:40The trailer shows injured civilians, horrific burns,
02:43and what appears to be an overwhelmed hospital struggling to deal with the casualties.
02:48We even see a woman clinging on to dear life,
02:50holding on to her child as they float helplessly with their house
02:54that was lifted up by Ghidorah's anti-gravity ability.
02:57The sounds of her screams are genuinely upsetting.
03:00Some of this imagery brings to mind historical photographs of survivors
03:03following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
03:07That connection has always been central to Godzilla,
03:10The original 1954 film was born out of the fear and devastation of nuclear weapons,
03:15using the monster to represent the suffering inflicted on ordinary people
03:19by forces they couldn't control.
03:21Minus One brought these themes back by setting Godzilla's return
03:24against a country already devastated by war.
03:27People were desperately trying to rebuild their lives,
03:30only to find themselves facing another disaster.
03:34And now the trailer suggests that history could be repeating itself.
03:38What makes this even more upsetting is the possibility that we'll see more of what happens after Godzilla attacks.
03:44Destroyed buildings and the ruined streets are one thing,
03:47but the suffering of the people caught in the middle is another thing entirely.
03:51Even if Godzilla is defeated, the survivors still are to live with their injuries,
03:55their grief, and the memories of everything they've witnessed.
03:58I hope the film explores those consequences in a meaningful way,
04:01because they're a huge part of what makes this version of Godzilla so frightening.
04:06He can destroy a city in minutes,
04:08but the people left behind could spend the rest of their lives dealing with what he's done.
04:12And if Japan is forced to endure another catastrophe
04:14before it's properly recovered from the last one,
04:17the emotional impact could be enormous.
04:21One of the most heartbreaking images in the trailer is Akiko praying.
04:25We don't know exactly what's happening in this scene,
04:28but seeing a young child praying while the world around her appears to be falling apart
04:32is genuinely an upsetting image.
04:34Perhaps she's praying for her adoptive parents to return safely.
04:38Maybe she's simply frightened and struggling to understand what's happening.
04:41Either way, it raises an important question about what this experience will do to her.
04:46In Minus One, Akiko represented the future Koichi was finally learning to fight for.
04:51Looking after her helped him realize that his life still had value,
04:55even after everything he'd experienced during the war.
04:58She gave him a reason to imagine a future beyond his own suffering,
05:01and now she could be caught in the middle of another disaster
05:04that threatens to take her future away.
05:07Akiko should have the chance to grow up in peace.
05:10She should be able to experience her childhood
05:12without constantly worrying about whether the people she loves will survive the next day.
05:16Instead, she may once again find herself surrounded by adults
05:20who are desperately trying to protect her from something they barely understand themselves.
05:24That's what makes this scene of her praying so effective.
05:27She has no control over what happens next,
05:29and she can only hope that her family will be safe.
05:32It also makes me wonder how far Koichi will go to protect her this time around.
05:35He's already faced Godzilla once,
05:37and he knows exactly what this creature is capable of,
05:40but he's only beginning to understand the apocalyptic abilities of Ghidorah.
05:45If Akiko's life is threatened,
05:46I can imagine him doing absolutely everything in his power to save her.
05:50I really hope she gets a happy ending,
05:51because after everything these characters have endured,
05:54she deserves the opportunity to grow up without another monster destroying her world.
05:58But with Ghidorah involved as well,
05:59I'm not convinced things are going to be that simple.
06:03Of course, there's another major question hanging over the sequel,
06:07and that's Noriko's condition.
06:09Her survival at the end of Minus One gave Koichi the chance to reunite with the woman he loved.
06:13After everything they'd experienced,
06:15there was finally hope they could build a life together.
06:18However, the film also left us with a rather unsettling mystery.
06:22During Godzilla's attack on Ginza,
06:24Noriko was caught in the devastation caused by his atomic breath.
06:28Somehow she survived,
06:29despite the sheer destruction surrounding her.
06:32And when we saw her again,
06:33there was a mysterious black mark on her neck.
06:36The film never fully explained what it meant,
06:39leaving us wondering whether Godzilla's attack had somehow affected her.
06:42Now, the Minus Zero trailer appears to be revisiting that question.
06:46We hear Dr. Ogata discussing the hundreds of people brought into the hospital after the attack,
06:50and says that Noriko should not have survived.
06:54Could Noriko be suffering from a serious illness?
06:56Is the mark connected to radiation exposure?
06:59Or could something stranger be happening to her?
07:02We still don't have the information to know for certain,
07:04and if she's suffering from some kind of terminal condition,
07:07the consequences could be heartbreaking.
07:10Koichi has only just begun to build a future with Noriko
07:12after believing he had lost her.
07:14The possibility that he could lose her again,
07:16this time to the lingering effects of Godzilla's attack,
07:19would put him through another devastating experience.
07:22It would also leave Akiko facing the possibility
07:24of losing the woman that she knows as her mother.
07:27Of course, we shouldn't assume that Noriko is going to die.
07:30That mysterious mark could lead to something entirely different,
07:33and I'm interested to see how the filmmaker's going to handle it.
07:36But the uncertainty surrounding her health
07:38adds another layer of tension to the story.
07:40Even while Koichi is trying to protect his family from Godzilla,
07:43there could be something happening in Noriko
07:45that he has no way of fighting.
07:47After everything they've survived,
07:49the idea that they might finally have a chance of happiness,
07:52only for that happiness to be taken away,
07:54is genuinely upsetting.
07:57When you put all of this together,
07:59you can see why Godzilla Miner Zero has the potential
08:01to be such an emotional experience.
08:03The first film followed people who had almost lost everything,
08:06and slowly found reasons to keep living.
08:09Koichi began confronting his guilt,
08:11Noriko survived Godzilla's attack,
08:12and Akiko gave them a future worth protecting.
08:15Now all three could be facing another nightmare,
08:19and Ghidorah entering the story
08:20makes the situation even more concerning.
08:26Godzilla already represented the horrors of nuclear warfare
08:29in that first film,
08:30but an extraterrestrial threat
08:31could introduce an entirely different kind of danger,
08:35one that humanity has never encountered before.
08:38The people of Japan may find themselves fighting two monsters
08:41while still struggling to recover from everything that happened in Minus One,
08:44that could leave them facing an enemy
08:46they simply don't know how to defeat.
08:48But for me,
08:49the most important part of the story
08:51will always be the people caught in the middle.
08:53I want to see Koichi and Noriko
08:55get a chance to live a happy life together,
08:57and I want Akiko to have a future
08:59where she doesn't have to grow up
09:00surrounded by destruction and fear.
09:02These characters have already suffered so much.
09:05Seeing them fight to hold on to the lives they've built
09:07could make Minus Zero incredibly powerful,
09:10particularly if the film forces them to confront the possibility
09:12that they might lose everything again.
09:17Godzilla Minus Zero has the potential
09:19to be one of the most emotionally devastating Godzilla films we've ever seen.
09:22Between the historical parallels to Hiroshima and Nagasaki,
09:26the horrifying consequences of Godzilla's attack,
09:28Akiko's fear,
09:29and the unanswered questions surrounding Noriko,
09:32there are plenty of reasons to believe the sequel
09:34could take these characters to some very dark places.
09:37Minus One ended with the possibility of a better future,
09:40now Minus Zero could put that future to the test.
09:43And honestly, I think it's what makes this sequel so interesting.
09:46We know these characters,
09:48we understand what they've been through,
09:50and we want them to have a chance to be happy.
09:52Watching them fight to protect their happiness
09:54could make every moment of destruction feel far more personal.
09:58Of course, we still don't know how the story will unfold,
10:00unless you've seen the film at the film festivals,
10:02which, if you have, no spoilers,
10:04but if the film delivers on the emotional depth of its predecessor,
10:08we could be in for one hell of a ride.
10:11But what do you think?
10:12Do you reckon Godzilla Minus Zero will be more heartbreaking than Minus One?
10:15And what do you think is going to happen to Noriko?
