00:00We thought we had a good understanding of Tyrannosaurus Rex. Turns out, we were wrong.
00:06The king of the dinosaurs is a lot more like you and I than ever thought possible.
00:11Brand new T-Rex discoveries are springing up out of the ground at a record's pace right now.
00:16And thanks to new technology combined with hard work and a bit of practice,
00:20we now have the best idea yet of whether a T-Rex was cold-blooded or warm.
00:25Make sure to stick around to find out more on that.
00:28And I have a question for you guys that we will swing back to later on in this video,
00:32but have a go at this.
00:34How fast do you think a T-Rex actually walked?
00:38I'll tell you just how fast paleontologists think thanks to the first ever T-Rex discovery of its kind
00:44that we're going to dive into.
00:46And are we about to see the return of the Chickensaurus Rex?
00:50We're talking feather T-Rexes again and you'll want to hear all about that,
00:54so make sure to stay tuned.
00:55I bet a lot of you would look at a T-Rex and think it was cold-blooded like reptiles.
01:01Or maybe you would think it to be hot-blooded like birds.
01:04But after new research, turns out the T-Rex very possibly could have had a body temperature
01:10practically the same as us, as far as they can tell.
01:14To figure this out, researchers took two small samples from one of the most complete
01:19and well-preserved Rex specimens we have sitting in a museum, 70% complete to be exact.
01:25And by drilling tiny holes in the teeth, they were able to gain enough material from them
01:30to be tested using a relatively new study.
01:33For a decade, the team who made this discovery practiced this new type of research,
01:39dialing it all in, testing other ancient animals, even a few other dinosaurs.
01:44Eventually, they were ready to tackle the T-Rex.
01:47Once they had the material from the Rex tooth,
01:50they studied the chemical signatures preserved in the teeth for over 60 million years.
01:55It sounds crazy, right?
01:57Like, how do these people figure this all out?
01:59Well, I'll try to explain.
02:01Inside the material from the ancient teeth, there are chemical bonds.
02:05And these bonds are how they're able to find out the body temperature of the creature.
02:10Now, this is extremely simplified, but more bonds equal cooler temperatures
02:15and less bonds, warmer temperatures.
02:18The process isn't simple, but this is pretty straightforward in the world of studying fossils.
02:24With the T-Rex, they found something wild.
02:27The Rex's body temperatures were right smack in the middle, around the same area as mammals.
02:34The Tyrannosaurus Rex is assumed to have a body temperature that averaged out around 97 degrees Fahrenheit, 36 degrees Celsius.
02:43Humans sit around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning if for some reason a T-Rex and you ever lived at
02:50the same time,
02:51you both could go have a nice brisk walk in the cold together.
02:55This does support the find back in 2022, where a lone footprint from a Rex was found in Alaska.
03:02Back during the time of the Rex, we think the area that went on to become Alaska averaged out somewhere
03:07in the 40s Fahrenheit or single digits Celsius.
03:11Not exactly the sub-zero temperatures of today, but still, that's pretty chilly.
03:16And thanks to the Rex's warm-blooded body, they may have been able to handle this cold weather in a
03:22way similar to us,
03:24and that's pretty damn cool if you ask me.
03:27This also means they could move a lot more than expected,
03:30consistently walking and patrolling vast distances of their territory without having to do the whole reptile recharge thing.
03:37There would be some setbacks, though.
03:40The warmer blood meant the animal's metabolism would be cranked up more,
03:44meaning they had to keep eating a lot if they wanted to keep functioning properly.
03:50Like a college football player who just got done hanging out with Snoop.
03:54Now, if you were like me, then you'd probably like a little more solid intel to come out
03:58before you just take what these researchers say is fully accurate.
04:01Luckily, for people like us, the research team did get more information before announcing their discovery.
04:08They went and got a crocodilian fossil specimen that was found in the vicinity of the Rex that was studied
04:14and tested it all the same.
04:16The number they got?
04:17Accurate to known science from modern living Crocs.
04:21Meaning their T-Rex study could very well be onto something.
04:25And that's huge in the paleo world where a lot of what we know about dinosaurs is really more like
04:31what we think we know about them.
04:33Very educated guesses, you could say, is very common in this field.
04:37But I'll tell you what, this next T-Rex discovery won't need any guessing or special tests
04:42because a high school teacher, Kent Hupps, recently found the first ever adult Tyrannosaur trackway.
04:49There have been plenty of lone adult T-Rex footprints found over the years, but this is the first of
04:55its kind like this.
04:57Not one, but four footprints from when a Rex walked the land 66 and a half million years ago.
05:03The tracks consisted of two right feet and two left, measuring three feet in size.
05:09Totaling a distance of 23 feet long for the entire trackway.
05:13That's like seven meters.
05:15Four steps of this ancient, giant animal preserved for all this time.
05:21I've got to see some dino tracks in the past, and no joke everyone, it was special.
05:26But they were no Rex footprints.
05:29So I could only imagine how awesome it must feel to see these tracks.
05:34Time to see how close you were with your T-Rex walking speed guess.
05:38Since researchers had enough footsteps to measure the animal's stride,
05:42they were able to estimate that an animal this big was walking between three and a half to four and
05:47a half miles per hour.
05:49About the speed of a light jog, more or less.
05:52This doesn't tell us how fast it could run, but it's commonly thought that Rex's top speed
05:58was about the same as an average human, give or take.
06:02They're warm-blooded like us.
06:04They walk and run about the same as us.
06:07It's just kind of cool, if you ask me.
06:09Did I mention how the T-Rex could officially become a symbol for the U.S. here soon?

06:47I've been a big supporter of this series since Heather first reached out to us,
06:52and when the pilot episode came out, I saw that she wasn't playing.
06:56It's a full-on cartoon that the kid version of me, adult me, loved watching.
07:01I could only imagine how you millennial parents of dino kids felt watching something
07:06that felt like Land Before Time mixed with The Last Airbender.
07:09That's like peak core memory stuff for our entire generation, almost.
07:14In that vibe, those classic cartoons,
07:17this is what the team behind Talon is shooting for.
07:21I think a lot of us can agree that the cartoon industry,
07:24especially for older kids and families,
07:27doesn't really have anything right now.
07:30Definitely not with dinosaurs.
07:32Since like the 2000s, dinosaur cartoons are either made for babies
07:37or for the gore factor crowd.
07:38The Talon series is aiming to fill that void,
07:42something that kids and adults can watch and enjoy.
07:45The first episode has 2 million views across platforms,
07:48and this October 14th,
07:50you can actually watch the reimagined version of episode 1
07:53with some tweaks to the story based on audience suggestions.
07:58Pretty much a director's cut, which is pretty cool.
08:00But if you haven't seen it, I'll sum up the show real fast.
08:03This is a sci-fi fantasy series set in the Cretaceous period.
08:07Following this Dakota Raptor, Talon,
08:09which just so happens to be a dinosaur with elemental powers like an avatar,
08:15you know, earth, wind, and fire.
08:16In this story, Talon's goal is to find all 8 other dinosaur champions across the world.
08:21See, now we've got Pokemon even.
08:23I love it. This is my youth, guys.
08:26Once the champions are all together, they will combine forces to stop a dark fate.
08:31In a world with a lot of studios trying too hard to change up the formulas for how to make
08:36a good story,
08:37I'm all for this classic simple approach to storytelling.
08:41Good against bad.
08:43Let's go.
08:43But that doesn't mean we aren't in store for a whole lot of surprises.
08:47Heather had one clear message for me to say about the future of Talon's story.
08:52To expect the unexpected.
08:54Look, I want people to help them get this series made.

09:44A recently announced, even though it was found like 30 some years ago,
09:49T-Rex mummy has surfaced in the paleo world.
09:52Not like an actual mummy by the way.
09:55But it's the closest we can get.
09:57When clay sediment covers the body of a dinosaur,
10:00sometimes it could create a filament of sorts.
10:03And once the body has dissolved away underneath,
10:06a clay shell would remain.
10:08Forever retaining the animal's body shape, size, and even skin texture.
10:12And this is where the big debate once again arises.
10:16On this Rex mummy,
10:18no evidence of scales has been found,
10:20which is leading to early predictions that it must have had feathers.
10:24I'll be quick to admit this discovery hasn't been properly reviewed just yet.
10:30And there could be many reasons for why no evidence of scales are showing.
10:34Just remember, there's no sign of scales,
10:37but there's also no signs of feathers.
10:40But still, expect this debate to reheat once again.
10:43I'm all for accurate Rex depictions,
10:46and maybe it did have feathers,
10:47but how about we keep the Chickensaurus Rex back in the 2000 teens for right now.
10:53If more set in stone information drops on the mummy Rex Jr.,
10:57I might come back to this topic.
10:59But for now,
