00:08dunkar scott anderson 97 one let's continue taking your phone calls as we go to aaron in
00:13grand rapids what's up aaron hey guys uh first time listener in the midday is not actually off
00:20a lot this week great thank you erin yeah i you know i i heard sam's comments because uh mike
00:27lenny touched on it yesterday afternoon on the drive home i get where laporta is coming from
00:34to an extent he's trying to stand on business he's mad because he didn't get his his his check
00:41essentially but gibbs got his i looked it up while you guys were on break sam's only missed
00:48in his career he's only missed nine games total in his nfl career i can kind of see why he's
00:55a
00:56little myth that he didn't get his payday but sam you're coming off a major injury my friend
01:02backs ain't nothing to joke about you know it made my stepdad essentially become retired from working
01:09because he hurt his back too much doing stuff so i can see where brad holmes is coming from
01:17but we also know brad holmes is bargain injury brad so i mean there's two sides to every coin fellas
01:24i just i i see what he's trying to do his agent probably coach him said hey go through the
01:30pot
01:30let's see if we can't get this deal done if his agent did that his agent did him no favors
01:38oh no 100 agree fellas i was like i i don't like ages mucking with with business like that when
01:44players are actively engaged in the season especially ahead of the first divisional
01:48showdown this year why would his why would his why would his agent say that
01:54probably because he wants to he wants to get paid he the agents need to make a living too you
01:59know
01:59but at the end of the day it doesn't it i agree with you it doesn't make sense why his
02:04agent would
02:05put him in that position i think i agree with you guys more though that he got too comfortable who
02:11he was killing with and talking with and said you know what forget it i'm gonna let it all hang
02:16out
02:17because i got a phone to pick and this is the phone i'm gonna pick on right now all right
02:22aaron um
02:25look you you said that immediately yesterday somebody got a little too loose and and you can do whatever
02:31you want like you're in any interview you can say whatever you want you can do whatever you want
02:35it's totally up to you but and and there's no way you know if he had given standard like the
02:42one
02:42caller call and said we get mad at players when they're like plastic or they don't say anything in
02:46interviews i don't i don't get mad at them i it's one of the the you know it's it's a
02:52safe place for
02:53them to be and i don't blame him for doing it um but there's a way there i also think
02:57that the
02:58best interviews are the ones that are interesting without getting themselves in trouble um i mean if you
03:04want to get yourself in trouble go for it but like golf is interesting to talk to each week because
03:08he lets us know what it's like to be in the quarterback of the detroit lions that's i think
03:12the best part about the golf interviews and that you don't have to get in trouble um but sam
03:19you know i i wonder deep down if he goes oh i kind of screwed up maybe shouldn't have done
03:25that i mean
03:25maybe we'll see if he talks um today uh with the media or not um but i mean ultimately here's
03:33the
03:33thing he's a great great tight end of this league he's a welcome addition to this team there's no
03:40question he helps this team win uh he's got a great relationship with jared golf on the field like
03:45these guys they click as much as golf clicks with anybody else including st brown i mean they just
03:50they know where they're supposed to be and and he's responsible and he's reliable as hell he catches
03:56the football i don't like the comments but it's not going to take away what i think of him as
04:01a player
04:01you know i wish he hadn't said what he said but he did and he's gonna have to live with
04:06it and we'll
04:06see what else happens because of it i mean but the bottom line is they do have to make a
04:11decision
04:13after the season about what is going to happen with sam laporte if they choose to decide
04:19beforehand then fair enough go ahead and do it you know if you then and that could mean give him
04:23an
04:23extension or on a very small percentage scale like less than two percent is it possible they trade him
04:30i guess the one thing is i would think it would be more important for him to stay here and
04:33battle
04:34with his teammates the guys he's he's gone to war with the guys that he has he's on a good
04:38team yeah
04:38he's on a good team i'm sure he has relationships with these guys it feels to me like it and
04:44this
04:46the the the idea that he doesn't care if he stays here and he said as much i i would
04:52think that he
04:53would want to he would want to battle with these guys and win here i think king's right players
04:57players aren't going to care about this players they're like players in the locker room yeah
05:01players in the locker room you do you you know your contract is your contract it's your livelihood
05:05it's you know we don't play this game for a long time you know this is our career is a
05:10really short
05:11career in terms of you know what a career is in the national football league so you get what you
05:16can
05:17and you know we'll stand by we know you're a great player on the field yeah i mean athletes only
05:22have
05:22a small window to make a lot of money right and so i think sam laporte's first option would be
05:26stay here with his teammates and what they've built together and get paid option two is get
05:32paid somewhere else i don't think he wants to leave or anything like that i think what he said
05:36was hey if i have to go get paid somewhere else i'll be fine you know life will be okay
05:41i'm a
05:42professional athlete this is part of the business it's facts it is i think what what is it that upsets
05:48you guys or the people you think that this came out publicly because i bet you this is set all
05:51the
05:51time behind closed doors of course yeah no question it's it's publicly and so casually
05:57but this is probably being said all the time but i don't know if hutchinson said this or gibbs or
06:01penny sewell or any of the one who's got a contract recently behind closed doors said hey if you guys
06:06don't pay me i'll go get paid somewhere else it feels a little bit like a breakup a preemptive breakup
06:12i didn't want i didn't even like her anyway that's what it kind of feels like but i think they
06:17all say it
06:17i'm sure they all do but there are a million things that we say that we don't actually let
06:23the words come out of our mouth they stay in our in our minds or there's stuff that we'll talk
06:28about
06:29that stays in the confines of the building that doesn't go over the airwaves that's what i'm
06:33talking about there are things in life where i i will say all to myself all the time i'm just
06:39going to keep quiet here yeah and i'm not talking about on the air i'm talking about in real life
06:43there's an inside voice and there's an outside voice probably shouldn't say anything at this time
06:47and let's see what happens there's a way to self-edit you know how many times have you
06:50started to send a text and go you know what yeah let me back this one up yeah sam hit
06:56send uh let's
06:57go to john in florida hi john hey fellas love your show thank you listen all day long this is
07:05my
07:05favorite i appreciate it i can't add anything more than what you guys have already said except for
07:11the gentleman that i'm 60 i'm 64 and and sam la porter was talking crap on a podcast uh you
07:20know
07:21like it was a personal conversation now he should know better 100 gator you need to be quiet but
07:26he don't owe me anything his heart belongs to his family his body is is uh not going to hold
07:34up
07:34forever he should get paid and if somebody told me hey you know we're not we can't afford you
07:41then logically i'm going to go well i'll just go play somewhere else or you know i mean in my
07:45case
07:46i love the sales team that i'm on i love the fellas and the people and the camaraderie but
07:50if they told me to go somewhere else i would if they by saying this is how much we're going
07:55to pay
07:56because you sucked last year you had an injury i think people are butthurt and the man just needs
08:03want to get paid how long does that tight end last in this league average i think the average
08:09nfl career is very short but and if you're a great player you have an opportunity to to see wealth
08:15that
08:15most people only dream of and he's in that rare group of people and he's kind of and he's factually
08:22he's right he's 100 right okay he will get paid okay so the average and this is funny i google
08:28search
08:28the average player lasts roughly 3.3 to 3.5 seasons the average tight end 4.4 seasons this
08:35to an ai overview google search so take it for what it's worth the end right there and everybody
08:41who's whining and butthurt get over it the next first down he makes going across the middle and
08:47he gets blasted and catches the ball everybody will be like what podcast so get over it people
08:54you know john thank you uh matt and roseville you're next hi matt hello gentlemen uh i just
09:00wanted to say i think this is really comparable to the way he came into this league i mean
09:04before we drafted him what were you talking about we were talking about tj hawkinson and
09:08we can't let hawk go we can't let hawk go and we did and then we drafted laporta and he's
09:14probably
09:14looking at that history going well they may not have the strongest ties to me um you know and
09:20unfortunately he said the quiet part out loud and probably accidentally so but you look at the
09:25scarcity of safety as compared to tight ends in you know elite levels in the nfl and branch is the
09:32more important one to keep um holmes may feel like he's got a you know an option or or you
09:38know
09:39backups in case they can't get laporta and he's not gonna overpay him matt thank you for the phone
09:44call we'll get to more of your phone calls and feedback coming up another edition of who's on top
09:48at 12 30 it is karshen anderson here on 97.1
