What do you believe to be Brad Holmes biggest mistake he had made as the GM of the Detroit Lions?
Transcript
00:00All right, guys, let's face it. Brad Holmes has made several poor decisions over the past
00:04few seasons. Was his worst decision not keeping Carlton Davis, who ranks ninth among cornerbacks
00:10this season, according to PFF?
00:12Damn.
00:12So I was looking at Carlton Davis. Some of it is the defense he's playing in right now
00:18and the schemes that he's playing in right now. I thought the same thing about Amik
00:22Robertson, who's now with Washington, who is having a really good year, and we could
00:27certainly use him. I thought both of those guys were candidates, but no. What was the
00:31issue before we started talking about the secondary? It was the defensive line. I'll
00:36go back to how do you continue to pay Marcus Davenport? How do you continue to have Levi
00:42Onzerike around? And I'll go back to his first draft. I had an issue when they drafted Levi
00:47Onzerike. I think that's his worst decision in the fact that he kept him around.
00:52Before I give my answer, you just said those other corners are excelling in good
00:57scheme. So then why is it not a Calvin Shepard issue?
01:00I agree. That's part of the equation.
01:02Because I think there's some people, we don't have enough talent. Well, why are these other
01:04corners succeeding in its scheme? We don't have a good scheme. Brad Holmes' biggest mistake
01:09is drafting Terry on Arnold. We always go back to the 2024 draft. That's supposed to be a long-term
01:15cornerstone piece that's getting better, and he's not even on the team. That's his worst
01:20move. All right, Jared Goff has over 1,200 yards passing with nine touchdowns and zero
01:26interceptions. Is Goff in the MVP conversation? It's not his fault. He's playing well, but
01:32quarterbacks of 500 teams are not in the MVP conversation. Agree. Not at two and two, and
01:38if you're going to be an MVP candidate, then you go win games. They had a chance to go win
01:42that game against Carolina, and he didn't do it. I think he's having a phenomenal year, and I don't
01:46want this to sound like I'm dogging Jared Goff. I think he is the best in the division.
01:52I think he is having a great start to his season, but this team is going to have to win,
01:56and if they're going to have to win, they're going to have to score a ton of points. That's
01:59how he gets in that MVP conversation. So he hasn't been perfect because nobody's perfect.
02:04I think he's kind of been as close to perfect as you can be as a quarterback in this league,
02:10and I just have this feeling that eventually he's going to make a mistake because he's human
02:15and he's allowed to, and that's going to bite him the one game where the defense maybe stands
02:19up. He could be right. All right. The Chargers are 0-4 in Jim Harbaugh's third season. Is
02:25Harbaugh on the hot seat? Should be, but he's not because in his first two years, they won 11 games,
02:32and they're still paying him a bunch of money, and I don't think their ownership really cares
02:35that much about the Chargers and what they're doing. So the guy that should be on the hot seat
02:42is Mike McDaniel. Like this experiment is not working, and it's the oddities between both
02:47of those guys, and I think we're seeing it in the play of Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert hasn't
02:51been as good as he could or should be, but in the start of his career, it's not been what
02:59he's done
02:59in the regular season. It's always been in the postseason. I think they have completely jacked up
03:04Justin Herbert. What was the question?
03:06Should Harbaugh be on the hot seat? Sounds like more of an insult than a question.
03:12Yes. Let me say this. In terms of the Justin Herbert thing, it's the OCD factor. There's
03:17one common denominator. It's Justin Herbert. All these other people come in and try to do
03:23things and make this team win, but they can't get out of their way because of Justin Herbert.
03:28He's a failure as a quarterback. I don't disagree. Because he's a specimen, I think he gets the
03:32benefit of the doubt of being the 6'5 strong-arm quarterback. He's a wannabe Josh Allen.
03:38I also don't rule out, though, him having a Stafford back nine of his career because we said a lot
03:43of the same
03:43things about Matthew Stafford. I think it's an insult to Stafford for what he did early in his
03:48career compared to what Justin Herbert did. And if you're not understanding Jim Costa's
03:53reference there, that was a question that was posed to, is Justin Herbert having to play too much hero
03:58ball? And Harbaugh led with, well, that sounds like more of an insult than a question. I mean,
04:04what Jim Harbaugh does, right? Exactly. All right. Jacksonville is three and one,
04:08and they almost have a two to one point differential. Are the Jags a legitimate Super Bowl contender?
04:14Contender? Yes. Favorite? No. And I want to draw the distinction, but things are looking good in
04:18Jacksonville. Liam Cohen won 13 games in year one. Should we be talking about him the way people talk
04:22about Ben Johnson? Jacksonville on the season has given up a bunch of passing yards. I know John
04:27highlighted that in the power surge, but dig a little deeper. Sixth lowest passer rating allowed,
04:33eighth in sacks. They're very good in the red zone. Yeah. This team is a contender. They're a
04:39contender. And to be a favorite, they're going to have to fix the defense in between the twenties.
04:44Cause I mentioned it yesterday during the power surge, they have allowed the second most passing
04:49yards in the NFL. Only second to our Detroit lions mentioned yesterday. They're 11 and one in their
04:54last 12 regular season games. Bonus question. Who had a bigger effect on leaving their team?
05:00Liam Cohen or Ben Johnson?
05:05Cohen? Cause I think Detroit's issues aren't play caller as much as it's an awful secondary
05:11and last year, a crumbling offensive line. I would have to say that as well. I, I,
05:15we're not sitting here talking about the issue of being the offense. It's the defense.
05:19Yeah. No, I know. And it's no knock on Ben Johnson being a good OC and a good head coach
05:23so far. It's
05:24just that it's amazing when you phrase it that way, how good of a job Cohen has done. All right.
05:29The Browns giants and Raiders are three in one, which of these teams has the best chance to make
05:34the playoffs? Well, I'm not a believer in the Browns. I am becoming more of a believer in the
05:38Raiders, but they're in a tough division. And if Philly is going to sell things off, if Dallas can't get
05:43their head out of their ass, I'm not going to sit there and say the giants win the division, but
05:53maybe, I mean, it's, it's, it's turning out to be one of those divisions where it's going to be the
05:57best of the worst. Look, there's a world where none of them make it, but if I have to answer
06:01the
06:01question most likely, right, that's the question. I do think it's the giants. They already beat the
06:05Cowboys and that division looks wide open. I think John Harbaugh, good coach. You're starting to see it.
06:11The lions and Eagles are both a frustrating two and two, which team is most likely to make the
06:16playoffs yet. Now, clearly we have to factor in what's going on up front for Philadelphia.
06:21Lane Johnson retires. Then they trade their center cam Juergens. For that reason, I'm going to say
06:26the lions are more likely to make it. Yeah. And Landon, Landon Dickerson is on IR, which is why they
06:32had cam Juergens playing guard. He's not as good as, as he is at center. Now, all of a sudden
06:38they only
06:38have one center and right now he's questionable with Saquon Barkley continually getting dinged
06:45up. He's got a shoulder. He's got a hammy. I, the offense wasn't good with these guys
06:49playing, right? So I got, I got to believe I'm out. Oh, maybe, maybe their GM is just a year
06:53behind in addressing the offensive line. Yeah. Hold on. Cause I know we're going to get this.
06:58Any criticism of Howie Roseman needs to be comma one, two Superbowls. Exactly. You know,
07:04the interesting thing with this question, I think is what, how you might see this play
07:08out. The Eagles defense is what would put them in the playoffs. The lions offense is
07:14what would write them in the playoffs and which one wins out. This might've been a different
07:18answer on Tuesday than it is now on Thursday. Yeah. We don't know how the line is going to
07:23play out. All right. Finally, the NFL trade deadline is just over four weeks away. Who
07:28will be the biggest name traded at the deadline? Well, I think there's a number of different
07:33names that we could bring up and I'll just bring up one right now. Khalil Mack. They're
07:37Owen for he is having is ageless wonder as a pass rusher. So he's going to Philly. He
07:44can't play offensive line. Um, and so I think Khalil Mack is probably the one and not necessarily
07:50just because they're Owen for, and they want to just, they want to try and find a way to
07:53recoup some draft picks. I think he may actually ask for a trade because he is nearing the end
07:59of his career. I don't know when that is, but I know it's got to only be a couple of
08:02years. I think he is a guy that wants to play for a Superbowl, wants a chance to be
08:08in the post season and clearly isn't going to get there with the Chargers. How about
08:11a big name? Marvin Harrison, Jr. Change the scenery. Could he be moved? Yeah, but I don't
08:17know. That's he didn't say who's the best player that will be moved. He said, what's
08:20the biggest name? Uh, all of fame, dad, Mr. Literal top five pick in the NFL draft. I
08:26mean, if you're going to look at some other big names, how about name? How about Jerry Judy
08:30with the Cleveland Browns who are currently right three and one, but they've also gotten
08:35really good production from Denzel Boston, Casey Concepcion, and their tight end, uh,
08:39Fannin. Like that could be one that gets moved because they want to try and create as many
08:44draft picks as possible. Josh Sweat. We're going to see him this weekend. Yep. Could be
08:48another one. Although his contract is a little bit more prohibitive. There's your Thursday
08:54touchdown. It's 97 one.
