After seeing the Lions get five straight 3 and outs, have you changed your opinion on the Lions defensive coordinator.
Transcript
00:00Doug Hersch, Scott Anderson, 971-248-539-9797, Monday's Mean Champ and Chump.
00:09We're asking you today, did that win mean anything to you?
00:12And if so, what?
00:14And not to downgrade it, I think in some people's case, I think it's a step in the right direction.
00:20Of course, it was Arizona.
00:22It is Jacoby Brissett.
00:23It isn't the greatest offense you've ever seen.
00:27But when that game was decided, the defense really did shut them down.
00:30They got two touchdowns late, piled up some yardage, and certainly one of the touchdowns is technically garbage time.
00:37But the bottom line here is, I think we all sat there in the second half.
00:42I don't know if there's one Lions fan that felt safe with a three-score lead in the third quarter,
00:47given what we've seen this year.
00:49But Arizona didn't really threaten the Lions the rest of the way.
00:54And it was encouraging to see them slam the door at an opponent.
00:57No matter who the opponent is.
00:58And look, Arizona played San Francisco tough.
01:02San Francisco's 5-0.
01:04They've got a case to be the best team in the NFL.
01:07Yeah.
01:08I guess the difference is that that's a division game.
01:12And division foes know each other better.
01:14Maybe that gives Arizona as much of an edge as they can have.
01:17But I'm not going to apologize for beating a team that you probably should beat.
01:23It was a get-right game for the offense that didn't start off on the right foot for three straight
01:29drives.
01:29They struggled in the fourth drive.
01:31It took a kick in the ass on the go for it on fourth and three to really get this
01:35thing going.
01:36And then they were unstoppable.
01:37But the defense really showed up.
01:41Not from moment one.
01:42No.
01:43That first drive was terrible.
01:45And then they really got their footing.
01:47They trusted each other.
01:48They played more man-to-man.
01:49They got the job done on the defensive line.
01:51Applied pressure.
01:53Stopped the run.
01:55And forced five three-and-outs.
01:58Got an interception.
02:00And endured a missed field goal on the next seven drives after that opening touchdown drive.
02:08248-539-9797.
02:11Juan's in Roseville.
02:12And next, hello, Juan.
02:14Hey, what's up, fellas?
02:15Hey.
02:16Yeah, I want to get my champ.
02:18I kind of got two, but I'm going to go.
02:20I got to get my champ to Sam LaPorter.
02:22Because if you realize, he definitely set the tone for the game.
02:27You know, we started off kind of brutal.
02:29And, you know, I thought about it.
02:31I said, well, damn, St. Brown and J-Mo didn't have a catch until, like, the end of the second
02:35quarter.
02:36And I'm like, that guy made some big catches, man, to set the tone to me.
02:41And my champ is definitely Jaden McDaniel.
02:44Even though I know the coach took responsibility for that, as a quarterback, you still got to know.
02:49You got to, you know, snap down the ball quick.
02:51But I just want to send a message, too, to Brad Holmes.
02:55If I'm Brad right now, I think we're in that pivotal moment right now where you have to make a
03:01splash move.
03:02And what I mean by splash, it don't have to be a Hall of Famer type player.
03:07It can be somebody like who I think is a star, like Buda Baker.
03:10I wouldn't mind having somebody that back in.
03:12I'm going out for a safety because I don't think Kirby's coming back and a cornerback.
03:16Somebody like Woolen from Philly, if they want to come off of him.
03:19Or the Fullerton guy from Kansas City Chiefs.
03:21So, if I'm Brad Holmes, I'm going all out before the trade deadline.
03:25Give me two DBs, and I think we'll be okay.
03:29One, that win shouldn't change the calculus in any way as far as what Brad Holmes should do moving forward.
03:39And my level of disappointment in Brad, I've made public over the last couple weeks, not that anybody cares.
03:45But I'm not as high on him as I once was now that we have an actual player that could
03:49have helped traded for a price tag that we're fully aware of
03:52and a price I would have gladly paid for Joey Porter Jr.
03:55The only path to the Super Bowl doesn't go through JPJ.
03:58So, what else do you got up your sleeve?
04:01I can't imagine him not aggressively burning up phone lines to try and make a trade.
04:07And what is, Juan, the craziest thing is, this trade deadline, NFL insiders are predicting this might be one of
04:13the more wild trade deadlines in quite some time.
04:16And you know what?
04:17Last thing I want to say is, right now his approval rating is bad.
04:22They were saying the campaign were in the political world.
04:25His approval rating is good.
04:26But you know what?
04:27I thought he can turn that with a couple big moves.
04:30I mean, I know it's a different sport.
04:32Thinking about basketball, Philly, the 76th and GM.
04:36I mean, they wanted him out, I think, morally.
04:39They wanted him out in Philly.
04:40I mean, they felt like he was making so many bad moves and big trades and not trades.
04:45And look at him.
04:46Before you know it, he got Jay LeBron and LeBron, and now they on top.
04:50So, he can turn it around.
04:51All he got to do is make two big moves, and people will love him again.
04:56Juan, thank you.
04:58Well, moves are there to be had, right?
05:00And now it's another week where there's more separation between the haves and the have-nots.
05:05It's becoming more clear which teams have to start thinking about next year,
05:09and is there moves that they can make in the next couple weeks leading up to the trade deadline that
05:15makes sense.
05:15And the Lions have to take a look and pick over every team and see what could help them.
05:21And there are, without question, there are players that can help them.
05:23And he brought up a couple of them.
05:24I mean, Buda Baker's name, I think, for years has been brought up.
05:28The only issue I have with Buda Baker is every year you're hanging another year on him.
05:33You know, and the guy plays with such violence.
05:35He comes out of games often.
05:38And he did on yesterday's game as well.
05:41But I like Buda Baker.
05:42He's a guy who's a difference maker in that back end.
05:45And, you know, we'll see where other teams are at, but there's no question they need to add a corner
05:50more than anything else.
05:51Tyler in West Bloomfield is next.
05:53Hello, Tyler.
05:54Hey, guys.
05:55How's it going?
05:55What's up?
05:57Hey, yeah.
05:57So, for me, I'm not really writing off Calvin Shepard as safe with his job yet until I see the
06:04two games after the bye week.
06:05You got Minnesota, and then you got Green Bay.
06:07Green Bay first, obviously, then Minnesota.
06:10Arizona, to me, is just they're depleted.
06:12They're real bad.
06:13But that's what you needed to do, however.
06:16But if I want to see a real change, I got to see these two divisional opponents first before I
06:21can say Calvin is safe.
06:22Yeah, you know, it's interesting because Green Bay has the worst rushing attack in the NFL.
06:27But they have one of the better passing attacks in the NFL.
06:30They've been one-dimensional.
06:32And so, you know, between that and then, honestly, Tyler, I find it interesting you choose these two games.
06:40One of the worst rushing defenses or worst rushing offenses in the NFL being Green Bay, and one of the
06:46worst overall offenses in the NFL being Minnesota.
06:50Even then, we might not know.
06:53Now, if they get shredded on the ground by Green Bay or Minnesota puts up 35 with a bunch of
06:58offensive touchdowns, I suppose that could tip the scales in the other direction.
07:03Right, right.
07:04No, for me, it's two divisional opponents.
07:05You got them at home.
07:06You got to take care of business.
07:07Have a good day, guys.
07:08Yep.
07:09Oh, they got to take care of it.
07:10Well, I mean, they don't have to, but if you sweep, you really set yourself up about, you know, hey,
07:20they're right in play in this division.
07:23And there's still a lot of football to be played, no matter what the result is, but you're in really
07:30good shape.
07:30You win these two games.
07:31And if you split, it's not the end of the world, but it's a blown opportunity, and you run out.
07:37There's only so many opportunities, right?
07:40And if you get swept, oh, then you're in big trouble.
07:43You know, each game is vastly different.
07:45You got the Packers have this, you know, aerial assault, throwing the ball downfield.
07:50That's really going to test the Lions defense.
07:53And then you've got the Vikings, who are the best defense in football, and they're going to really test the
07:59Lions offense.
08:00And it's going to be a battle of some serious minds at the coordinator positions to see who can dial
08:07it up and who's going to win.
08:092-4-8-5-3-9-97-97.
08:12Jeremy is next.
08:13Hello, Jeremy.
08:14Hey, how are you guys doing today?
08:16What's up?
08:17Hey, not much.
08:18So I was at the game last night.
08:20I live out here in Phoenix.
08:21And a couple things I think I should say about it.
08:23First is, we took over that stadium last night.
08:27There was next to no Cardinals fans.
08:29If I was a Cardinals fan, I would have been really embarrassed.
08:33Also, on top of that, I think as far as looking at the season, how things are going,
08:37you've got to throw this game out.
08:39Arizona's terrible.
08:41They're absolutely terrible.
08:43This is a spot where players come to die.
08:47You can't throw it out.
08:48I mean, I think you can say that, okay, it's not the greatest opponent, but it was something they needed
08:54to get done.
08:55The Lions had to prove that they can do what they set out to do.
08:58And they more than answered the bell on yesterday's game.
09:01We all understand.
09:02It's a much more difficult task this week, or next week, I should say,
09:07against Green Bay than what they faced against Arizona.
09:09But you can't apologize for winning games.
09:13Oh, no.
09:13I don't think you've got to apologize for it.
09:15I mean, they did what they're supposed to do.
09:16You have to win that game.
09:17But coming up these next two games, if they split them, you're still .500 since last year.
09:21And this is just not going good for the team.
09:25Do you expect them to split them, Jeremy?
09:27What do you think is going to happen?
09:28I kind of do.
09:29I think they're going to split it, yeah.
09:32You sound like you are just not encouraged at all by what you saw yesterday.
09:36Well, I mean, hey, they look good.
09:37But I also look at the opponent we played.
09:40Well, that opponent gave San Francisco a hard time.
09:45Yeah, they did.
09:47All right.
09:47So the weird thing about Arizona is if they're on their game, they can be really good.
09:51But their defense just isn't that great.
09:53I don't know.
09:54But you can sometimes.
09:55Berset's not bad.
09:56I like him.
09:56I love the running back.
09:58But I'm just not a big fan of their defense out here.
10:01Well, the Lions do that to a lot of defenses.
10:04And that's the good news.
10:06I don't think we need to doubt that the Lions are bringing a good offense to the table.
10:10And yesterday, for seven consecutive drives, they looked absolutely unstoppable.
10:16And it's the fact that the Lions defense, you said it yourself, you like Berset.
10:20And the Lions, when that game was decided, he did almost nothing.
10:26I'm curious if we're going to see a tandem back there at safety of Brian Branch and Keith Abney.
10:33Is Abney going to be the other guy?
10:34And does that also calm things down?
10:37And can he be a ball hawk like Kirby Joseph was?
10:42248-539-9797.
10:44Aiden Hutchinson joins us at 1.
10:46Dan Campbell, what he saw from the defense and what it means moving forward.
10:51You'll hear it today at 12.05.
10:5397.1.
