00:47have a ton of bets he's only got 134 at-bats this year okay um and his ops is down
00:53to uh to 649 now
00:55the reason for that is an injury i'm not bringing it up to say they're not playing him a ton
00:59because they are playing him it feels like you know three out of every four games but i'm bringing
01:06it up because they play players that they think are going to perform for them it's not about what
01:11they've done it's okay we expect that eventually he'll start to produce at a higher rate when guys
01:17are cold you know you don't hit when you're a 250 hitter that doesn't mean you have literally one hit
01:24in every four at-bats right you're gonna go oh for 12 and then you're gonna go four for four
01:32and be a 250 hitter and and so when when a guy like javi bias is not producing at the
01:39plate and he
01:39hasn't been producing at the plate a whole ton of late um then they they expect him to get better
01:46now at this point in his career at 30 34 years old you wonder if he's you know started a
01:52decline
01:53but he's one for his last 11 i'm sorry he's oh for his last 11 one for his last 14
01:59he's hitting 167
02:00in 42 at-bats in august he only had three at-bats in july because he was coming off the
02:06injury that
02:07high ankle sprain but when he came back from that injury he was on fire he went eight for 14
02:12in the
02:12three games at the end of the month uh looked really good but he's starting to slow down now when
02:19you're seeing it feels like he's always leaning into that outside pitch again which which we hate
02:24to see um but he's so good defensively i mean i know we made the error last night that was
02:29so
02:30uncharacteristic of him to just let it go under his glove like that but he's very very good defensively
02:36and he and that's part of the turnaround of the tigers is that they've been able to play well
02:40defensively and it's actually kind of interesting they had that run starting in june and it didn't
02:46include javi bias but with bias back and being healthy it gives him the flexibility to be better
02:51so throw mcgonigle at third instead of having mcgonigle at short with colt keith at third and
02:56obviously with max clarkin center it looks a lot better if he needed i mean before they brought
03:00some guys up javi played a game in left field but then they brought up callahan and that seems to
03:06fix
03:06that problem too you know the um the the fact is they play players that through slumps
03:15so that when they do correct you get you said you have the stats in front of you what's zach
03:20mckinstry hitting this month uh i sorry i just had javi up there um mckinstry is hitting extraordinarily
03:28well uh it's like 326 i believe um he's hitting 326 a 442 on base percentage and an 861 ops

03:40on base almost half the time in this month it's 43 at bats he's done a heck of a job

03:56regarding the reports from yesterday's scrimmage and we said the defense ruled the day
04:04made us wonder is there anything wrong with the offense but but you know the defense the question
04:10is do you have to how hard do you have to squint to see this team being actually decent on

04:16here's some of the feedback we've gotten citing scrimmage stats might be the most loser thing

05:08ennis rakestraw has an interception in practice you know i i do think given the way he played
05:17it's important to give all the information because he did not play well no he didn't i'm glad you brought
05:23this because when you had said this earlier i wanted to to make the comment that okay and good
05:28for ennis rakestraw to have a nice practice he's got to stack them he really needs to for his own
05:33sake
05:34and his comments after the practice were like he needed it and he knew it um and he had to
05:40concentrate to make that interception off the tip pass and because he bobbled it at first but was able to
05:44haul it in and had some other good plays but also got beat on a couple plays in practice but
05:49he needs to stack good practices on top of each other just so he can feel good about himself he's
05:55he's healthy recently he came out of the game um last week but he's healthy enough to practice now
06:01so that's not a concern so get out there do what you got to do he's he's still supporting the
06:05run
06:05making plays in that part of the game which the which the team likes and he's going to be a
06:10work in
06:10progress i'm i'm not excited about ennis rakestraw i'm encouraged they had a nice practice but you
06:16got to put more of those together than just the one and i don't think you were saying anything like
06:21was too glowing about him when we talk about the the problem okay if the defense looks good does that
06:26mean the offense looks bad the offense is going through it right now because they don't have a
06:30center they don't know who's going to play center they went the first week with mclaughlin there
06:35because scruggs wasn't healthy enough to play and they didn't want to take reps away from
06:39mclaughlin without kade mays yes first week without kade mays and you know then over the
06:43weekend tate ratledge gets all the reps at at the number one center and then now it's it's it's
06:50juice scruggs it's getting the the reps at center and then you had scruggs and mclaughlin splitting
06:55time in in the workout last night and both of them apparently had some errant snaps and ratledge
07:01didn't have uh a great uh practice the other day when he was working with the ones because none of
07:06these guys are centers or at least they're not expected to be the top center mclaughlin had
07:11certainly played it in college um but mace was supposed to be the guy so these guys haven't had
07:17a ton of work with jared goff now i'll be more encouraged if we hear about oh it's three practices
07:23in a row where they didn't screw up a snap that'd be great to hear in the meantime that's a
07:28problem for
07:29this team and they're gonna have to work through it and figure out what the best combination is between
07:33left guard right guard center because it feels like they're trying to mix and match a little bit
07:37see okay if ratledge ends up giving them the best opportunity at center then is miles frazier the best
07:43opportunity at guard or is ben bartch a better opportunity at guard or scruggs or mahogany whatever
07:48it is they got to work it out i think ultimately ratledge is going to be your right guard they're
07:52going to figure out that scruggs is the center but it's going to take a little bit of time hopefully
07:57the the temple picks up and he picks up they still have scruggs on a bit of a pitch count

08:02he got the first team reps to start practice they brought my goal at least the plan was according
08:07to dan campbell yesterday was to bring seth mclaughlin in after they get rugs hit whatever
08:12his pitch count was uh scruggs hit whatever his pitch count was what do you make of the way the
08:17second texter finished the letdown will all the seat the season letdown will also be the same yeah the
08:24same as what before they started making the playoffs before they turn this franchise around so you're
08:29you're already you're already thinking that this team's done i mean that's that's what i infer from
08:34that so look none of the preseason talk matters i don't think that we're but we're going to talk
