00:00Our Browns beat reporter is a gentleman named Daryl Ryder,
00:03and he's brought to us by Scheiben Jewelers,
00:05Cleveland's premier jewelry store.
00:06Hello, D.
00:07Hi, Mr. Ryder.
00:08Hello, boys.
00:10Baker Mayfield said all the nice things yesterday.
00:14Okay.
00:17Ken Zampezi didn't.
00:21What do you think?
00:23What's going to happen on Sunday?
00:27I think this is going to go one of two ways,
00:29either Baker Mayfield is absolutely going to take a blowtorch to the Browns on
00:32Sunday, or he is going to be caught up in the emotion of it all,
00:38and that's going to lead to turnovers and mistakes.
00:41He had three fumbles last week.
00:45And that's just the Baker Mayfield experience.
00:48He's a very intense, emotional person, wears his heart on his sleeve.
00:56Sometimes that's a good thing.
00:57Sometimes it's been to his detriment.
01:00We obviously know that all too well here in Cleveland.
01:03So I just, I don't know what to expect Sunday other than he's either going to
01:09take a flamethrower to him and light him up,
01:14or he's going to implode.
01:16And, and, and, um, you know, I, I lean toward option a, uh, based on what I saw from the
01:23Browns last week in Jacksonville, but, um, that's why they play the games.
01:30Where can this team improve this week?
01:32I'm trying to be optimistic.
01:34Give me one spot where you think that just kind of really went sideways last week, that
01:39that wasn't them.
01:41Well, I hope that they play more man-to-man than zone than they did last week.
01:45Cause I just, I don't, for whatever reason, and I don't get it like, uh, this for whatever
01:52reason, anytime they have major blowups and major miscommunications, whether it's this
01:58year, whether it's in previous years, it always seems to come when they're in zone and I don't
02:02understand it, but, um, you know, I, I think defense is where you can expect the leap or
02:10hope for the leap.
02:12Okay.
02:12Andy, since you're looking, I'm just looking for something that we like, you know, like
02:16I felt like, okay, linebackers, maybe like, although they didn't, we didn't see a whole
02:20lot of them during the preseason or, you know, wide receivers, like something I think could
02:24be a lot better and will be a lot better because the first game was first game jitters and it's
02:30so easy to sit here and concentrate on how bad quarterback play was.
02:33Hopefully it's a secondary, but, uh, Tyson Campbell didn't practice today.
02:36We'll find out later when the injury report comes out, just what's going on with him.
02:41But yeah, um, you know, I, I, I try to say the secondary.
02:48Darrell, if obviously the opener performance was terrible week one, sometimes
02:54is an aberration in the NFL.
02:56I'm not saying that's the case here.
02:59If they, if they run two or three of these in a row together, right, man, you're going
03:05to have to rethink a lot of things real quick, aren't you?
03:08And I don't just mean quarterback.
03:09I mean, like, are you, are you hanging on to veteran players?
03:12Are you looking to move them at the trade deadline?
03:13I would think if it looks terrible, like it did against Jacksonville once or twice, three
03:19times more, man, there's a lot that could change my, my, is that accurate?
03:25I'm still moved by Jimmy Haslam's.
03:27We're not going to be a painful to watch, right?
03:30We're going to be fun to watch.
03:31We're going to be, uh, uh, you know, the losing is unacceptable.
03:35All the, remember all those speeches that Jimmy Haslam gave in the off season, uh, about
03:40things, right?
03:41Yes.
03:42So, yeah, you, you, you, you can't have this content.
03:45You have to be competitive.
03:47Okay.
03:48Um, and I think that's all you can ask for, right.
03:51Uh, is just be competitive.
03:53Um, you know, there, there are, I don't think that anyone had any expectation that this was
03:58a playoff team.
03:59Right.
04:00But, um, I think the expectation was that they were going to be able to win some of those
04:04games that slipped away from them last year.
04:07Um, and so, uh, losing 34 to 10, right out of the gate where you had multiple weeks to
04:14prepare for that team, that's a real bad look for Don Munkin and his coaching staff.
04:19Obviously it's a bad look for your players as well, but that that's just kind of where
04:23I am at right now, as far as where this team needs to be.
04:28You need to be competitive.
04:29If you lose Sunday, 27, 24, right.
04:33Okay.
04:34Different story.
04:35Yeah.
04:35Right.
04:36It happens that that's, that's part of the competitive nature.
04:40But, um, if you go down to Tampa and you just get your doors blown off again, I, I mean,
04:48you, how, how do you come back to Cleveland for your home opener on the 27th and roll
04:55it back out again?
04:56Right.
04:57So, yeah, I, I understand where you're coming from, but then here's the other thing too.
05:02What's your alternative?
05:04You know, what, what, what, what, what, what, what is there, who's going to be able to save
05:11the day or salvage it?
05:13Right.
05:13And I think that's the other element, uh, that we have to look at here.
05:18Like it's easy to sit here and say, okay, Deshaun Watson can't play another down from Cleveland
05:23Browns, whatever, regardless of how you feel about that whole situation.
05:27Right.
05:27Okay.
05:28Well, what's the alternative should or Sanders, if you put your standards on the field, does
05:31that increase your odds of winning?
05:32Well, Todd Munkin, the coaching staff, the front office, all told you how they felt about
05:40that, um, by not starting him in week one.
05:44Okay.
05:45How do you get in front then whenever you're going to make this quarterback change?
05:50Right.
05:50How do you get up?
05:51Well, yeah, we think Shadour gives us a better chance to win.
05:54Okay.
05:54Well, why does it give you a better chance to win in week?
05:57Insert the number here versus week one.
05:59What's changed.
06:00Right.
06:02So, um, yeah, uh, I understand where you're coming from, but I'm looking at this situation
06:09coming off of last week.
06:10I mean, that was a little shell shocking to me in, in the respect of just how non-competitive
06:16they were in two of the three phases.
06:19And I, I, I almost kind of felt like we were back to the Eric Mangini days with the only
06:23thing they can play is special teams.
06:26And, and if that's how this season is going to go, my goodness gracious, buckle up.
06:31Darrell, let me ask you this.
06:32Tevin Jenkins hurt.
06:33I mean, obviously you don't want to get hurt to lose your position, but, um, Austin Barber,
06:37we were talking about his pro football, it was pro football focus grades last week.
06:41We're off the charts.
06:43Um, he was probably one of our best players playing last week.
06:45Has he, do you think he's, if he has another week like that, does he secure the spot and they
06:50move Jenkins back or move Jenkins to another spot?
06:53Or what do you think?
06:53Todd said that.
06:56Well, Todd Munkin told us yesterday, regardless of Tevin Jenkins availability, Austin Barber
07:01was going to remain the starting right guard.
07:03So I think that that obviously answers that question.
07:06But that would mean they would have a success story out of a third round draft pick though.
07:10That's, does anyone need to, does he know that that doesn't work?
07:12I love the idea though, that Barber could be a starter.
07:14That's great.
07:15Yeah, it would be great.
07:16Maybe you nailed one.
07:16Yeah.
07:17Yeah.
07:18I mean, I don't know you have a success story after one game.
07:20Like, let's, let's, let's not fit him for the gold jacket in Canton, Ohio.
07:23I do think it's, I do think it's interesting, maybe a silver jacket considering he had never
07:27played the position before and he graded out as high as he did.
07:31I mean, wasn't Joel Batonio a tackle and they moved him to, you know, he moved to guard.
07:35Stop bringing up those things called facts.
07:38Stop that.
07:39Stop it.
07:39You know, I mean, it is, it is, it is possible.
07:42I mean, they, you know, they tried moving KT Leveston inside.
07:46Now that didn't, that didn't work out the same way, but right.
07:49Yep.
07:50Um, but yeah, like I said, Todd Munkin had identified, uh, late in training camp that,
07:55you know, Austin Barber, uh, the arrow was pointing up on him and, um, he was reconsidering
08:02Tevin Jenkins as the starter at right guard.
08:05Unfortunately, Tevin's back flared up that slid Austin Barber in there.
08:10He played really well last week.
08:12Munkin said, Hey, regardless of availability, Austin's the starter this week at right guard.
08:18He plays well again this week.
08:19I don't anticipate there'll be, uh, any, uh, change there going forward.
08:24They'll, they'll, you know, they, they'll stick with him, uh, at that right guard spot.
08:28And then you'll have two rookies, uh, on your offensive line, maybe three if Parker Brailsford
08:33kind of comes along here.
08:36Darrell Reiter's joining us.
08:37Darrell, what do you think Mike Rutenberg thought of that first effort?
08:40And what's he going to, what's he going to say about it?
08:43Yeah, I, I'm, uh, I'm very interested to hear what he has.
08:48To say this afternoon, um, uh, I can't imagine he was the least pleased, but there's going
08:53to be a lot of questions today about zone defense in the secondary for sure.
08:57Uh, you can bet on that.
08:59Um, but yeah, I, I, I think if anyone's probably a little surprised, it'd be him, right?
09:07Cause again, I don't think with all the respect to Trevor Lawrence, uh, and that Jacksonville
09:13offense, I just, I don't think anyone expected it to look as easy as it did, uh, for the
09:21Jaguars.
09:21And also to Jacksonville took their foot off the gas.
09:25It could have been much worse.
09:26Yeah.
09:27That's, that's, that's the other part of it too.
09:29So give me a one word answer on this week.
09:31Three home opener starting quarterback is Deshaun Watson.
09:35Okay.
09:36That was two, but thank you.
09:37There you go.
09:38Well, I mean, yeah, did just having fun.
09:43Just having fun.
09:44See you, Daryl.
09:45Andy said one word answer.
09:46You said Deshaun Watson.
09:47I thought that was well done by you, but you know, it was just, it's an A.
09:51There you go.
09:52D thanks, buddy.
09:53You know what?
09:54I should have said four.
09:56Oh, that would have been four.
09:57Thank you, Daryl.
09:58All right.
09:58We'll see you with coach Riz after the game on the YouTube channel too.
10:01All right.
10:02You bet guys.
