00:00started at three uh our second hour we're now two to six eastern i don't mean the guy who called
00:05in
00:05to complain about some nonsense uh but no more references to that so what no uh i had to with
00:15some relatively high amount of urgency leave the studio because i touched my eye having
00:23apparently not done a thorough enough job washing my hands after having cooked earlier today with
00:28habanero peppers and like literally i could not open my eyes what i really wouldn't want to have
00:35happen you know it cleared up and we're back i wouldn't want to have happen you know like a
00:42football player or something soap dnp parentheses pepper yeah yeah what what's his what's his
00:50injury pepper slash i pepper he's got pepper eye just touched his face he's got pepper eye pepper
00:56what caused this pepper that can't be right i i can't live with that so we're gonna have to tough
01:02this out yeah well so far so good with us now is nick bakai it's always such a treat to
01:08talk to nick
01:09joins us on the west her hotline this is maybe the earliest he's ever been on if not up that's
01:14my
01:14line yeah we've never gone for the lead off slot here it's a lunch hour it's a very rare thing
01:20for
01:20us to have ever done three o'clock nick what are we taking you away from absolutely nothing oh no
01:26beautiful no i'm in the um i'm in the uh hiatus uh window of waiting to hear news about project
01:35pickups things like that so you're a welcome distraction from my constant state of angst and
01:41i have to tell you show yes when you handle peppers nitrile gloves come on guy that's a barbecue
01:48pro skill right there put on the gloves i need to buy gloves to make this ravioli dish you're saying
01:54that's that was my oversight yes the you don't mess with habaneros with the bare hands come on okay
02:01well i just you're just one man and we need you had i missed any part of the show from
02:09it i definitely
02:09would think differently about it next time um maybe still i will you're like bob costas when he had
02:16pink guy during the olympics i had a flashback hope i look okay but yeah thank you well good
02:22advice you mentioned you're waiting to hear stuff there there was i i think i know this through
02:27facebook i could have asked you when we set this up but there was good news on the netflix show
02:31right
02:31the leanne that got the deck had picked up no we were actually we just dropped about um two weeks
02:39ish ago and so that's our season two which was shot you know was shot in the 1940s and now
02:46they're
02:46finally dropping it and uh but don't run don't walk to leanne season two it's delightful it's
02:54delicious and uh we're so now you know um we're in the algorithmic hell of whatever they evaluate
03:01and don't deal you in on so we're waiting to see but i will tell you the show's gone very
03:06well
03:06it's a delight it's wildly popular go watch all right good and you must be fresh off of having
03:11attended the emmy awards do they still have i i know that was last night just through twitter i
03:16don't even is that still on tv as a show i don't even know where to find these things anymore
03:21is that
03:22where that was i just saw winners you know i like i like pluribus so i was happy for ria
03:27sehorn not
03:27like i know her but like i like the show a lot um so she won and i but it's
03:33so funny like award shows
03:34that you know i used to we we maybe all grew up similarly watching that stuff with our parents
03:39when we were little kids and like i just have no idea if it weren't for twitter i wouldn't know
03:44any
03:44of this stuff happens anymore you know i i was the same way i grew up watching them all and
03:50was
03:50fascinated and now um being a little bit through the looking glass um you know and being in the
03:56profession it's you know it's like what my friend once said about reading uh the trade magazine
04:04variety uh if you're in the business variety 15 minutes to read two days to get over it because
04:11you're just reading about other people deals and good news i have only had one emmy nomination
04:19um in my career for work i directly created and wrote it was for a short-lived cartoon that i
04:27created with mike whitehorn who created king of queens and it was a comedy central animated series i kid
04:33you not about two testicles and that is my lone emmy nod so um you know i don't you almost
04:40don't want
04:41another one at this point if that's the story right what did i have to do to win
04:54how have you been in your life with reviews and criticism i mean we i think i have never been
05:00a
05:00critic's darling when i was the showrunner on mom people loved that even like you know that got the
05:06little new york times love letters um i was involved uh contributing to kaminsky method though that was a
05:14good one but generally speaking um it's either no attention or negative attention because i have you
05:22know toiled in the vineyard of the sort of half hour comedy which is not anybody's darling certainly not
05:29the multicams i did um my greatest uh critical moment uh i i co-wrote and created the mall cop
05:39movies
05:39and um i actually have it framed in my office the variety review of mall cop 2 said this is
05:46more
05:46damaging to sony than wiki oh ben wiki leaks is that the line holy cow nick wow that is at
05:53least you're a
05:54good sport oh listen no i you know i thought that's actually a pretty good line it is you gotta
06:01respect that even though it's cruel you gotta respect that no i've never really been i've been a man of
06:06the people guys i'm not a critic darling i'm a man of the people i'm from buffalo what do you
06:10expect
06:11what about in your nfl countdown days if it was called that advantage push when you were doing tail
06:18of the tape for espn maybe that's a it's a different culture i guess when it comes to
06:23criticism if that's even the word or kind of what reaction you get i mean i always thought this is
06:27before we knew each other i always thought those were so funny and football is so unfunny like anybody
06:33who dares to try to be funny around football is really taking a risk and it's i think uh as
06:39long
06:39as they are welcome to frank frank caliendo right uh another one really nice yeah oh he's a genius um
06:46my god um no i those you know i will say you know there's stuff that you know i guess
06:52you could put
06:52something on your mantle in terms of an award but i'll tell you the two things that i was involved
06:57with
06:57that were for the demographic they were targeting 100 percent loved and accepted were um my work on espn
07:08and making fun of things i was always smart enough to make them very highlight driven
07:12so as not to frustrate the sports center viewer and the other thing is when i was the cat on
07:18sabrina
07:18because there's a generation of girls who grew up on that show and they all wish they had a cat
07:24who could talk back and confide in um so um no but you know i mean look in the mall
07:30cop movies made
07:31hundreds of millions of dollars i mean it's my stuff i i am not i'm not breathlessly awaiting the
07:37reviews like some broadway show where oh god the times hates us we're we're out of business that's
07:42not my game but you know but my things have done i've been involved with tons of things that have
07:48done extremely well i've been very lucky i've had a fabulous time so i am not complaining but emmy not
07:55yet i mean look we're in an era where every emmy nominated comedy is a drama so i don't know
08:01i'm
08:01yeah i'm not there my wife and i were talking my kids dragged me to that backrooms movie and i
08:07have
08:07never been more miserable for two hours in my life and it's the worst thing i've ever seen and my
08:14two
08:15sons are like god you don't god i'm like you don't get it watch a good movie no clue there's
08:20a guy in a
08:21pirate costume from party city and that's supposed to scare me and then it's just an ode to bad
08:28furniture i was out of body astral projecting to my safe so miserable and but as i said no this
08:36is
08:36the the process of life robin said that this is where we're headed this is you lose your gravitational
08:43pull relevance loses its form and it makes dying easier because you're like i don't get anything
08:48anymore anyway so oh man now we are getting deep this took a turn this is really speaking to me
08:55what i'm doing is preparing to dying by hating i'm preparing to die because i hate everything
08:59nick has not even mentioned that people aren't even writing the ads anymore computers are right
09:04movies like the backrooms make saying goodbye to earth easier and that is it's great of contribution
09:12i'm telling you and and happy tuesday to you yes indeed ode to bad furniture is my favorite little
09:19item here from this conversation well nick the the bills did have a day on sunday i'm sure because
09:24you know even in busy times i think you probably would be carving out three three and a half hours
09:30to to watch the bills um but now that you're in this like hiatus window i maybe you know you
09:36even
09:37went longer than that but um you know a hell of a start man like i don't know who saw
09:4336 31 from
09:44those two teams coming i might assume sooner thought like 2019 what would have been a score that i would
09:50expected out of that game i 100 agree i thought the under was the play there i really did given
09:55the historicals you know then i think the bills going into that game bills houston games were 10 to
10:01three to the under and you know it has and the fact that it's in houston only added to that
10:06in my
10:07mind so i was way off um but oh gosh it was really exciting and i mean i have to
10:13say my favorite moment
10:14was that close call interception at the end that we fortunately dodged the bullet on and when ross
10:20tucker said it's one of those josh allen yolo passes so so perfect um but no i i honestly what
10:30a
10:30great start i know we go further into the season now with a lot of mysteries still unanswered in terms
10:37of are we good enough to get over the playoff hump but who's a great start we'll talk to ross
10:44tucker next hour he's on with us every tuesday afternoon how about that we talked to al michaels
10:49yesterday do you know him have you ever met him i had i know al i had dinner with al
10:55and bob costas
10:57uh with my wife robin and mr chow how's that for a holly woman and i remember it because everything
11:04was going swimmingly and then i knocked my martini over and made a scene so it was one of those
11:09but
11:10no i know him a teeny tiny bit and he doesn't disappoint neither does bob that was quite a night
11:15he's the best i think al's the gold standard don't you you didn't yes you didn't catch him eating a
11:21vegetable i bet no no infamous no vegetables my wife just yelled it out no vegetables
11:29he'll be on actually a feat it's an accomplishment at a chinese restaurant so how about that
11:34yeah that good point how do you avoid it at a chinese restaurant just noodles noodles and pork
11:42soleil and noodles i guess i can't even remember i mean that so many delicious dishes where you don't
11:47even like have to really like vegetables but the peas and the carrots and the yeah they come in
11:52everywhere everywhere there are those little corns the baby corn baby corn baby corn baby corn
12:01with with nick bakai so al's probably on his way in right now he's flying today to buffalo uh amazon
12:09prime one thing going back a little bit to talking about the emmys and like tv we've had this
12:14somewhat this conversation before i'm finding as much as i love and i think really appreciate good
12:21television and there's so much i mean it's just this vast landscape you really have to find
12:28conversations about it to find out what's out there that you didn't even hear about or know about
12:33or subscribe to something that tells you but my thing nick is i am that guy that is subscribed to
12:41everything because of sports and i don't know what to do about it like prime happens to be my wife's
12:48thing she's a prime member so we get but peacock and apple has even baseball now espn plus and i
12:58yeah i don't know what to do oh i know i'm the same way you know and it is fairly
13:03sports driven but
13:04also you know i am keeping tabs on what is my line of work yeah i believe it's kind of
13:10like um
13:11i always feel like the the way the business works in terms of outlets it's like balls of mercury like
13:17right now there are a thousand streamers i feel like they're going to force things again they kind
13:24of find a way to you into making it nick we're kind of losing you here i want to hear
13:33that point
13:34so hopefully we can do we're going to re-establish that i don't know we we started to started to
13:38fade
13:38there um yeah i i want to i want to tell him i want him back on the line to
13:44tell him um that i got the
13:46hbo max subscription which i still have because that's what you get it for a reason and and as it
13:53turned out in this case the reason i got it was because of nick when when his show the bookie
13:58was
13:59premiering there back in 23 i think right around thanksgiving of 23 is when that happened i'm like
14:05all right well i want to support my friend he's got this venture on on hbo max so i'm going
14:09to subscribe
14:10and you know that lasted a couple of seasons and it's gone now and i still have hbo max because
14:17that's how i get tnt like i didn't have a an avenue to tnt otherwise because my main streamer doesn't
14:24have it and so i went in for nick bikai's the bookie and hbo max is still getting my whatever
14:30it is a month you went in for bookie and you got the sabers and i got i got the
14:34sabers tnt games and
14:35like whatever a game of the week and it's like i got paul bisonette with uh as a side dish
14:40with my uh
14:41with my bookie is what ended up happening we lost you as you were making the last point but i
14:46was
14:46eager to hear what you're going to say i appreciate the bookie plug god love you um no i was
14:52just saying
14:52i think that they're all turning back into four companies like it was 30 years ago but you know
14:57that means that doesn't mean they're going to let us subscribe to less things that's how they're milking us
15:03now so somehow i know i get my menu up for my streaming and i'm like i already want to
15:10take
15:10a nap i'm like why and i and i'm watching things like the criterion channel so it's just
15:15it's like a fly's eye when i go to my login page i'm like wait what am i doing um
15:25well i mean you know there's been a lot here in the in the office i'm steering back to the
15:31bills nick um
15:32yeah um i mean you got to be encouraged by that offense and and you've got josh allen apparently
15:39telling ross tucker and the cbs crew that he was expecting joe brady to kind of be different without
15:45sean mcdermott looking over his shoulder we talked to deon dawkins yesterday on our show he's gonna be
15:50a regular bit uh part of our mondays and he said the same thing like you can just feel the
15:56difference
15:56in the building because you've got you know nothing against mcdermott but like we got it's
16:01an offensive guy now and it just feels a lot different i felt that way too because you know
16:07in the early going you felt like oh they're gonna ride cook here you know in your recent encouraging
16:12returns on his runs and then next thing you know i mean when you see it was a dream come
16:19true to see
16:20dj moore and kincaid do what they did um because that's exactly what was missing last year um the
16:27defense is still terrifying because i don't consider houston a machine offensively um so you know but you
16:35know look our lot in life currently as bills fans is that we get to ride these crazy shootout games
16:41and it is just so exciting and i think it's worth it and you know hopefully during the season they
16:49get things right i mean you know i i still i mean i thought the pass rush was encouraging second
16:55cornerback still terrifying because that's what's always killed us in the playoffs for me the teams
17:00that get there are good enough to just isolate that one week coverage situation yes destroy us so
17:06i'm worried that this is what scares me this is such an interesting point for me over the last few
17:12years and bulldog is already knowing where i'm going i bet from a conversation i had with former pff guy
17:19eric eager who was so good at it that the nfl hired him he works for carolina and he had
17:25this one
17:25breakdown nick it might have been after the bengals won the afc or it might have been even after that
17:30he's
17:31like you get to the playoffs look around all the teams left have two great receivers yeah and you
17:40have to i mean you're it's good teams and they know each other really well the whole season has played
17:45out they maybe know how to take away the one guy but it's the other yes right and what we
17:50did with
17:50that point usually was all right well how good is gabe davis you know like how good is do we
17:57have t
17:57higgins no do we have you know odell beckham with cooper cup in la or whatever the examples were
18:04um and it was usually a no i mean it looked like sunday the bills didn't know what they wanted
18:09to do
18:10at cornerback two like they were rotating uh apart from benford who kind of did well enough against
18:15collins benford benford is never the problem yeah i know it's the other guys and i know i i think
18:21harrison got the vast majority of snaps he did yeah yeah yeah they worked for
18:28is still telling yeah igman osin played maybe like 18 of the snaps or something i think yeah
18:34and you know this week will be uh another piece
18:39might be losing you again yeah i think we're gonna we're i think we're cooked we'll just uh do you
18:44yeah
18:44i don't know you want to try again i mean yeah three strikes and you're not three okay all right
18:48yeah
18:48sorry i didn't want to you know blow off my my friend here but i yeah i was feeling bad
18:53st brown
18:55will be so interesting for the bills i mean in the slot are they gonna they're not gonna put benford
18:59in the slot but he offered on st brown i wonder what they'll do yeah i don't know i don't
19:05know all
19:05right nick one more one more kick at this do we already use that okay i'm not gonna move i'm
19:09not gonna
19:10move but anyway i was gonna say jameson williams will be a litmus test this week you know it's gonna
19:16be
19:16because he's he's a guy that everybody expects to go off and for some reason doesn't as much as
19:23expected so um you know i mean we got our hands full and that that will be the next piece
19:28of this
19:29second coverage corner puzzle to me are you still playing much fantasy you know i'm down this year
19:36i've only got a couple of three leagues and every year is where i used to do a lot of
19:39those uh
19:40like pro forecast magazine so i ended up with five leagues before i even tried but i'm backing
19:46it down but i'm actually um part of that is because i'm doing a show on um v-sin uh
19:52by the
19:52weight right show yes i'm listening to you in my car on sirius now right it is really really fun
20:00um 175
20:02you guys a lot yeah and uh so v-sin it's 158 or 189 in canada but every wednesday night
20:09me and billy
20:10gardell who you know and love from mike and molly and bob hart's abishola and there's a great stand-up
20:15he and i do an hour show wednesday night it's called winning ugly where we chop up the nfl point
20:21spread
20:21it's been really fun when is it on wednesdays 10 p.m eastern and then they rerun it and it's
20:28also i
20:29believe a podcast available on all your main appley podcast outlets winning ugly i can't wait to see
20:35it winning ugly all right advantage push did did anybody go ask for that to be the title no uh
20:41it's
20:41so it's iconic i think those in there i'll get some dill with jay bork and you better believe it
20:49let's wrap here because it's still crackling a little bit but uh we're always so happy to talk
20:53yeah while we have each other thank you nick that was fun guys thank you okay all right
20:58good luck with that show and good luck with uh everything else leanne and uh whatever else
21:02whatever else you got cooking there's always stuff cooking can you tell me what leanne is about i don't
21:06even know it leanne is uh it no okay uh is it about a woman named leanne yes yes her
21:15her husband
21:15she's widowed or divorced at late she's a grandma and like you know hilarity ensues do you know the
21:22actress no okay i want to i want to check it out okay because it's nick yeah and i have
21:29netflix
21:30because i want to watch a black friday football game or something in two months
21:35it's also on prime i think uh that that show you know what happens so and i kind of like
21:42that this
21:42actually has held up but a long time like many years ago there was a service that has a different
21:49name now where you could buy shows and movies so we for example bought the star wars all the star
21:57wars movies at one time like a bundle on this separate service now it's called fandango
22:05and i bought the west wing my all-time favorite tv show this way yet now i'll be like browsing
22:13and i'll
22:14go to netflix and there's the west wing which it comes and goes off these different services but i'll
22:19watch it on netflix not even knowing that i'm doing it and then i'll go to the other one to
22:25see like
22:26what i want to watch from the things i've bought and i'm like oh why why is a different episode
22:31coming
22:31up because i'm watching it in two different places at the same time i mean it's just so convoluted
22:35hang on let me use the word that you're watching it on two different platforms
22:39yeah at the same time so here i had inauguration part two or it's not called that uh inauguration over
22:47there and over here i've got gone quiet like that's a different season why is that happening
22:53leanne is listed here what i'm looking at is a quirky comedy a grandmother's life is upended when
22:58her husband leaves her after 33 years of marriage she navigates this new chapter with the help of her
23:03family grace dignity and jello salad leanne morgan is the lead actress in the show oh so she plays
23:11herself i guess maybe oh would have been a question for at least her name yeah thanks to nick bachai
23:16ross
23:17tucker coming up at four eight oh three oh five fifty
