00:00Ryan's rookie year I gotta look at that and say this is a statement by the Buffalo Bills
00:10there's Jeremy White from earlier this morning
00:14no that was I think that was Stephen A. Smith that's correct I didn't have a visual on that
00:17one but I'm pretty sure that wasn't Jer I can confirm my bad it was not Jer um all right
00:23so
00:23here's the conversation going on right now here in the studio as we uh work our way through day
00:28two of middays on WGR driven by Northtown Automotive uh Brad Ryder and Owen Parker are here
00:36Tim Graham was here senior advisor Dan Dale is here for the full four hours um one of the things
00:41we've been doing over the last few months is when Joe Brady speaks at a podium we will play that
00:47back
00:47but we don't do it live because we want to be able to pause it because we want to have
00:50a conversation
00:50about it like just taking the audio and throwing it on the air for whatever he talks for like 16
00:54minutes it's boring yeah some of it's you can't hear the question some of it's like I hear
00:59something and I want to talk about we just pause it and we have a conversation talk about it and
01:03if
01:03you're listening and you hear something you want to talk about we'll pause for you too you just call
01:08803-0550 so we can connect with the fans courtesy of Northtown Kia Western New York's number one Kia
01:13dealer shop online at NorthtownKia.com our options here we got two separate conversations that went on one
01:20is the head coach and both coordinators spoke yesterday and none of us have heard those things
01:26in their entirety we've heard sound bites from them um I'm going to rule out Pete Carmichael
01:32because he's not calling the plays and we will hear from him over the course of the year of course
01:37but it really comes down to do I want to hear the new head coach after his first game or
01:43do I want
01:43to hear the new defensive coordinator after his first game and it's more his first game than
01:48Brady's first game because Brady's been the offensive coordinator the whole time in the play
01:52caller and he's been around Josh and this is all new to Jim Leonard and there are so many new
01:56players
01:56on the defense it's a whole new scheme so part of me says Leonard there's a part of me that
02:02says if
02:02we were better at this and more efficient and uh more brief there was there was some brevity if we
02:06had if we could censor ourselves a little bit edit it down uh we could do both but there's zero
02:11chance
02:11that that's going to happen no so I'm going to leave this to you guys to decide if we should
02:15go
02:15Joe Brady I think I think or Jim Leonard I think Joe Brady is the answer here Brady has to
02:24be the
02:24answer first wind under his belt yeah you just kind of guy hear from him yeah I'd like to hear
02:31what
02:31Brady had to say I haven't I've listened to most of it I didn't get through the whole thing so
02:35I
02:35would I would like to hear Brady talk and with the mind of knowing I can stop this and say
02:41something
02:41if it comes to mind I'm a little curious how the week works for the head coach because typically
02:45you'll get on a regular like Sunday and Sunday thing he'll speak on Monday then he'll speak on
02:51Wednesday as a precursor to the upcoming game right is this like a a joint uh double news conference
02:58it was like here's what happened yesterday here's what's happened on Thursday or is he speaking again
03:02I don't know um I assume this will not be much about the Detroit Lions yet um but we've got
03:07a couple
03:08days to get to that so maybe tomorrow we'll have new stuff but for now let's let's hear Joe Brady
03:12following his team's win and again we're not just gonna play it if you hear stuff you want to talk
03:17about we're just gonna we're gonna hear some and pause it and talk and it'll be fun you'll like it
03:22if you haven't been along for this ride yet I think you'll enjoy it the other conversation we had was
03:26do we need a name for this yeah because as as this has become an actual show we're going to
03:32have
03:32recurring things that we do this is one that we fall into a lot I feel a the need I
03:38guess to
03:39explain it every time but if we had a name for it that summarized it maybe that would save all
03:44of
03:44us some time so we're thinking about that the word podium is in our head podium podium is doing work
03:49for me right now I gotta we gotta figure out what the other half may be all right so I
03:53might get uh
03:53I might dig into AI ask it for some help oh boy words that uh also we want some alliteration
03:59probably yeah maybe start you start there yeah it seems like the radio thing to do all right
04:06we'll we'll try it but for now uh let's just listen to this unnamed segment that we call nothing uh
04:12but
04:12it's the head coach of the bills Joe Brady on WGR I get heated um I there's sometimes I I
04:19try to I
04:20try my best not to be emotional I don't make emotional decisions but I I do get I do get
04:24I do get
04:25upset when when certain things are um you know I I think I do a good job of being able
04:31to then you
04:31know move on but um things things happen on headsets things happen during games that uh you uh I'm not
04:39always necessarily proud of um but um and uh what do you think that means hold on stop stop stop
04:47stop
04:47I know things happen on headsets that I'm not necessarily proud of that sounds like what I heard
04:53coming out of my son's room when he was playing fortnight against his friend I'm sorry he's
04:56playing madden against his friend and the words that came out of his mouth as he's talking trash
05:00to a fellow 12 year old I was like hey anyone sorry sorry dude what did Joe Brady do on
05:06headsets
05:07that he regrets I want to know who he yelled at I don't know what that could be said I
05:11mean it could
05:11be no because if there was a topic about this game that was like some miscommunication that could
05:18be what he's referring to but this starts with an answer to a question we don't hear what happened
05:23on the headsets yeah it's a great Dan do you have any idea what happened on the headsets I think
05:28they
05:28gotta be fighting right I somebody's gotta be throwing hands maybe up in the booth I I come on I
05:34almost I'm if I'm going to place a bet which I won't be able to do because nobody has odds
05:41on this
05:41but I will do it mentally I would bet that something with the defense with the confusion
05:47really frustrated him and got him going a little bit I would bet it's the penalties the 12 men on
05:54the field remember he mentioned that way back in the preseason he's like I want to knock that out
06:00I nothing ticks me off more than seeing too many men on the field that's a great now first game
06:07when it matters 12 men 12 men on the field like what twice yeah all right they even had to
06:13take
06:13a timeout once and they got called another time that knocked them out from doing the fourth and one
06:17I like your bet way better than mine Dan all right I'm going to read you some ideas for the
06:22name of
06:22this segment oh okay I know we were only halfway through one answer sure this is why we can't get
06:27through these I know exactly but uh here are some I said come up with a name for a segment
06:32where we
06:32listen to press conference and pause it repeatedly to discuss what was said oh no
06:36the AI oh no I didn't even mention anything about uh alliteration okay or the word it's all
06:45going to be alliteration anyway or the word podium it's not these are not terrible yes they are okay
06:52go ahead first one it suggests is called press pause I mean okay press it's a press conference
07:00that's pretty good sure it's really good simple clear and immediately tells the listener what the
07:04format is press pause with a little press pause on Joe Brady I don't hate that at all no other
07:10segment name ideas the tape delay no stop the press not terrible pause and unpack man too trendy
07:19micro scrum oh man how about I read you some from the bullpen read between the bullpen okay
07:27hold on real people is doing work read between the pauses freeze frame hold that thought and rewind
07:34and react I like press pause press pause I'm okay with press pause all right what's the bullpen saying
07:40we got all right let's see here podium pause okay that's not too far off we like the alliteration
07:45some of these will be bad because this is real people that's fine so we're all aware
07:49podium hour of power nope no agreed writer in parentheses and Owen reacts nope podium at pace
07:58slash pacing the podium probably not probably not pressing podium projections that's just too much it
08:08needs like four more here I might like this one all right podium punditry podium punditry
08:16no all right I liked it podium pop-ups podium pop-ups oh it's like pop-up video yeah I
08:22might
08:22like podium pop-ups light of light of truth 1095 come up with podium pop-ups good job I like
08:28how
08:28you're thinking light of truth 1095 you're way better than light of truth 1093 was true tell you
08:33that um I'm still on press pause I like press pause I think podium pop-ups is probably my best
08:39suggestion out of the bullpen I'll lean towards that because it's real people all right yeah keep keep
08:43them coming all right we're gonna have a we're gonna have a fight me and you about AI I think
08:46oh yeah I hate AI oh hate it oh you're gonna love it I won't yeah no you're gonna love
08:52that you're
08:52gonna love how what a an important tool it can be for our uh for our show because it's no
08:56because
08:56it's terrible that's a part of it that's that's a part did you see I can accept this did you
09:00see
09:00the thing I put out you had to have I put the thing online oh yeah I asked it what
09:04you've heard
09:04about the new thing at WGR because I'm trying to process like what's out there it's like oh we've got
09:09this great new lineup it's uh WGR mid days and it features Brad Ryder and Tim Graham and Owen
09:17Poindexter and then it just keeps going and it's like everything else that I read was accurate it
09:23just changed your name from Parker to Poindexter hence my issues well right so that's part of exactly
09:29what AI is it's like hey there's some stuff in there oh you missed that one badly yeah and then
09:34you move
09:34on and then you call oh you're right to call me on that that's not his name right all right
09:39back to
09:39uh Joe Brady please question but um I'm way more calm uh throughout the week so calm now
09:54um as it's it's uh what the what what he's what he's going through and what he's able what he
10:00means
10:00to our football team and just him being in this building every single day and going out on the
10:04football field and you know nothing's nothing's changed since last time I talked to you guys like
10:10um you know um I see him I still heard every single day that I see him and and can't
10:15can fathom what
10:16he's going through but so for him to be able to I mean he he went back to Houston and
10:20back to his
10:21hometown and be able to play football and um you know it's uh and and that he was out there
10:26with
10:27with his brothers and and doing that you know that meant a lot to the guys and I know he
10:31needed
10:31all the guys for that and so uh um I I told the guys after the game like it'll never
10:36be about me
10:37um but in moments like that like no one was deserving more of a game ball than than at Oliver
10:50congrats on the wind but
11:08yeah I mean look all three phases weren't good enough yesterday right
11:12and and we have to wrong there's too many penalties across the board I appreciate that
11:16you know uh yeah I think sometimes when you look at a box score you think it can paint a
11:22picture of
11:22a lot of different a lot of things that either good or bad but when you actually watch it you
11:27know there's a lot of smoke detectors out there that I kind of talk about that you know I know
11:31your
11:31question was about defense but offensively you know there was we put a ball on the ground right
11:34it can show that there was no takeaways and no turnovers but we had some turnover opportunities
11:38turnover worthy plays and um you know defensively I thought the adjustments that were made at the
11:43second you know coming out of halftime you know and be able to get the um uh be able to
11:48get them
11:49the you know a couple punts you know and and at the end of the day they extended some drives
11:52with
11:52some penalties right and I think we have to play cleaner football in the back end or just see how
11:57the
11:57game is being called um you know that was that was a big thing is like you know sometimes some
12:02games
12:02they'll let you play some games they're going to call it and we have to be able to adjust in
12:05those
12:06situations um and uh you know to be able to get off the football field and so um I I
12:11think both as
12:12a football team just in general early like we're going to be figuring our team out like we like to
12:16think you have a pulse but you're still trying to get a feel of how to use guys offensively
12:20defensively special teams and um to see the guys be able to make the adjustments to see the guys be
12:25able to look through it all be able to kind of play all the way through inside the red zone
12:29and
12:29figuring out that's that's what I was proud of and then you know we you know we don't get a
12:34lot of
12:34time to be able to kind of talk about the game right and so um you know how do the
12:38guys kind of
12:39learn from it and make sure that those same mistakes don't show up this week and we continue
12:42to grow as a football team I am very interested to see the third down defense specifically evolve
12:49and that is what that question was about I know Brady quickly went to the offense which I also find
12:54interesting because they were great for the most part but I I appreciate that he is not just like
13:01yeah good we're awesome I I enjoy that but the third down defense to me is going to be
13:07maybe the biggest question going into Thursday night is can they please just get off the field
13:12on third down I think it's so crucial for this team and it just has always going back to McDermott
13:19it has been a struggle on third down and I if there was one thing I I really wanted out
13:25of this defense
13:26going into this season I know the aggressive style and the pressuring the passer I more than
13:33anything want them to be better on third down and that was not really the case on Sunday afternoon and
13:39I I really want that to improve more than anything I think the most interesting thing to come out of
13:43that portion of the news conference is the part where he reminds us that the stats tell us the bills
13:51didn't turn the ball over but the ball was on the turf four times and the bills recovered all four
13:56of them there's a phrase called fumble luck and I don't believe in it a hundred percent part of it
14:01involves your team being aware and hustling and the play made by torrance is one that's not made
14:09I shouldn't say it's not made but it it stands out when you see an old lineman hustling
14:13to go and get it but it was um I mean the bills were the only ones close to that
14:19ball they were
14:20getting whether it was torrance or somebody else with him like they were the only ones who could
14:23get it right it was like three bills on top of it before so there's you know part of that
14:27you put
14:27yourself in that spot by hustling but also you got lucky that it bounced where it bounced and you know
14:32so you got that um twice you stripped the ball from cj stroud twice the bills recovered it um and
14:39then
14:39there was the what was the other fumble um there were two there the ball was on the turf four
14:45times
14:45the bills got it all four right and in a game that I'm thrilled with the win I loved what
14:53I saw of
14:54a defense or an offense in its early stages of figuring out who it is uh and I liked a
15:00lot of what I saw in
15:00the defense obviously there are problems but um the game was a coin flip it's not a stolen victory but
15:08you
15:08very easily could have lost that game and that's one of those things that I forget about and I
15:12because I remember very strongly Lasseter not catching the interception the play before uh
15:17palm Joshua Palmer goes into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown um but you don't think about
15:23those fumbles that you just oh I dropped oh I got it yeah but those are scary moments for sure
15:27that
15:27easily could go the other way so that him bringing that up reminds me all right this isn't just a
15:32rah-rah everything's great type of coach this is a guy who's looking going we gotta clean that we
15:37gotta clean that we gotta clean that and there are going to be fumbles and you're gonna want to
15:40try to get them all and I hope they recover every fumble that both teams make for the next 16
15:45games
15:45right but they won't and it's nice to know that he's thinking of that
15:51safeties might be cheating toward dj a little bit and help open things up
16:09yeah I mean when you actually look at that and if I'm josh I would have thought that there were
16:14actually he was leaning towards dj but also outside leverage on dalton to double dalton in that
16:18situation like to get to be able to throw a post and man coverage that means there has to be
16:23a bracket
16:23on somebody or a lean towards somebody in that situation that's what gave us the opportunity at
16:27josh palmer um you know but that's part of bringing a guy like dj more because in those same situations
16:33the safety will be lean you know but now if teams are going to double a dalton kk that leaves
16:37a dj more
16:38and an opportunity it leaves a josh palmer a khalil shakir and so um yeah that that was um he
16:44said
16:44sometimes I say it but it's it's some words like a guy like dj more he made a lot of
16:49plays yesterday but
16:50sometimes in a situation like that or a guy like dalton kate in that they made the play without
16:54making the play because they're out on the football field and because of the ability to be able to get
16:58the ball in that situation the defense has to play it a certain way and it allows somebody else
17:02you know um if it's there to take it in uh and the trust that josh has in that situation
17:07that that's
17:08strictly an alert on the post you know um if if it's there and they got the off coverage and
17:12he's
17:13felt the safety was leaning to be able to take it and so I think it's a combination of a
17:16lot of
17:16things of josh just trusting the play but when you got when you have guys like dj
17:19khalil you know dalton those situations it's like all right if they want to take someone away
17:23we have somebody else that we can go to and obviously dj made a lot of plays for us yesterday
17:27both you know that the stats counted in the box or and when they did it
17:36passing games ability to exploit the middle of the field i thought the old line like that that
17:44defense is um i know you can again you can look at the box score and see the points the
17:49defense is
17:49one of the best in football if not the best in football for a reason and they make you earn
17:53every
17:53every yard every point and uh um it was all hands on deck in terms of you know handling the
17:59edges up
18:00front um and you uh whether that was moving the pocket whether that was you know everybody on the
18:05football field was jamming right yeah we had the last play of the game dj moore's you know jamming and
18:10chipping in those situations and um but it allows if you if you can keep josh clean um it allows
18:16there there's there was obviously opportunities you know you know across the field and uh um josh did a
18:23great job yesterday of of taking what the defense gave him and when the opportunities were down the
18:27field to take a shot take it if it was if they were playing deep and he had some intermediate
18:31throws
18:31across the middle of field you know he took it and i thought he played you know he'll obviously want
18:35that second to last play back i'm i'm i'm not uh i'm not telling you everything was perfect but um
18:41i thought he played the style of game that i wanted him to play and i thought he went out
18:45there and he
18:46was he was aggressive and when shots were there it was opportunities to go take it and um you know
18:51and uh he came out you know ready to rock and uh i thought that was good and again i
18:56know your
18:56question was about the middle of the field but i thought just overall from a past game standpoint josh
19:01was understanding what we were trying to get done and um uh execute at a high level so in there
19:08we
19:08both kind of eyebrows raised a little bit on josh played the style of game that i want him to
19:13play
19:14implying that all this stuff that we're talking about is not just made up by fans and made up by
19:22members of the media that there is unshackling is the the thing that's been you but yeah that's what i
19:28heard that's one of the first times i've heard him sort of acknowledge that yeah john that's my
19:34josh now it used to be our josh because mcdermott was that coach now it's my josh and i'm going
19:39to
19:39use him the way that i want to and the defense is going to deal with whatever the consequences of
19:44that
19:44are but now that it's my gig that's our guy that's who we're leaning on and it doesn't mean they
19:52weren't doing it before it just means i don't have to clear this with anybody if i go out there
19:57i win by the josh i die by the josh that's a pretty good attitude to have one game into
20:04your
20:04tenure as a head coach for sure i think that that to me might be the most significant thing we
20:09hear
20:10in this entire press conference just confirming that is the game i want the quarterback to play
20:15i want him throwing ball like average depth of target above 12 yards that is a massive departure from
20:23what they were before and if that is true if he's telling the truth there that that's the game he
20:29wants to play i think there's a lot of people that will be very excited about the buffalo bills this
20:34season and josh allen should probably be a pretty heavy mvp favorite i also like the part where
20:40the ball that he would want back he actually got back it was fine right because it wasn't caught
20:47he's lucky it wasn't caught the team is lucky it wasn't caught we as bills fans are lucky it wasn't
20:54caught but that's part of the thing it's like i don't know if we just keep throwing it to the
20:58end
20:58zone i bet we score i bet it's better for us more often than it's good for us more often
21:03than it's bad
21:03for us yeah so that's the style i wanted him to play he'd want that throwback he got it that
21:08they
21:08just brought it right back to the line of scrimmage and gave it back to him usually in that it's
21:12like
21:12yeah we lost the game he'd like that throwback that went for a pick six or whatever the goaltender
21:17would like that goal yeah he'd like that one back yeah of course he would he'd like all of them
21:21back
21:21yeah um did you see the ryan fitzpatrick thing ryan fitzpatrick so the jared goff fumble almost
21:30yeah like they called it an incomplete pass it went backward yeah and they said it was because it was
21:35his intent to throw the ball forward uh ryan fitzpatrick put a thing on twitter talking to the nfl saying
21:40uh i threw like 100 whatever the number is 169 interceptions in my career uh it was my intent
21:46to throw to my receiver please advise please i would like them all back no please adjust the
21:52records here yeah let's take a call from nate in angola nate you're on wgr hello hey um first i
21:59just
21:59want to give a shout out to owen bulldog for uh getting uh getting the show with you guys so
22:03i'm
22:04going to start with that oh and bulldog appreciate that nate thank you do you go by that i do
22:08not i do
22:08not go by he only goes by joshua but uh but i uh i appreciate it all right and uh
22:15i'm glad you guys
22:16just brought up the point about uh you're glad that the interception wasn't caught in the end zone
22:20um i was actually thinking after the fact so a couple days later now that that actually wouldn't
22:25have been a worse result than kicking a field goal on that spot um i think the bills kick a
22:31field goal
22:31and i think texas marches down the field and then kicks like a 40 50 yarder wins the game
22:36if he throws a pick there they play super conservative josh probably gets the ball back
22:40with a minute they got to go 30 yards again 40 50 yards to kick a field goal so i
22:45just want to hear
22:45your thoughts on that no that's totally right and that's i haven't heard anyone make that point
22:49and i think that's exactly right like there are there are byproducts unintended i'm gonna say
22:55consequences but unintended results that come from making a play like that if that ball is intercepted
23:01in the end zone it's a touchback the bills have their timeouts they're still in an okay spot yeah
23:08they could survive it yeah i mean ideally he would intercept at the one that'd be even better that
23:13would be great um but yeah there were good things to even come out of an interception in that spot
23:17so
23:17um you know to go back a couple hours the caller that said it was unconscionable that josh palmer didn't
23:23go down after catching the ball in full stride a bullet at the five in between two collapsing defenders
23:30that he didn't have the wherewithal to put the ball down on the ground or you know put himself
23:34down on the ground outside of the end zone um no that's that that wasn't the right situation either
23:39like there are good things to come from the risks that are taken that aren't necessarily even talked
23:43about um until you think until you take two days to think about it right nate oh yeah um for
