00:00it came up yesterday already there's like a you ain't seen nothing yet thing there's a uh
00:04working for a living taking care of business working for a living is uh is a lyric
00:09working for a living is taking what they're giving because i'm working for that's huey
00:13lewis and the news oh and the news right well that's the album sports and this the album is
00:19sports yeah i'm the news guy i don't know if that song is on it that's a good song i'm
00:23not
00:23huge on huey lewis but if i'm picking a huey lewis song it's on my it's on my short list
00:27what's up tim grant they made it a real show i'm back from houston how was that
00:33yeah well hey it was a good business trip the bills gave us plenty of material to talk about
00:39to write about to display on television so that way i could hit all three mediums
00:45nine lead changes yeah that's a lot a lot of fun a lot of nerve-wracking stuff too i mean
00:52it was a
00:53fun win i think if you looked at it from a critical standpoint and said oh jim leonard's
00:58defense i don't know not a good first impression too much stuff underneath a lot of bad play from
01:03the secondary terrell bernard needs to get his nose dirtier a little bit bradley chubb i want to say
01:09there's all kinds of things you could point to but that was a hell of a win it was a
01:14lot of fun
01:14there was nothing about that that you would have walked away from uh saying i didn't get my money's
01:20worth right yeah uh regardless i regardless of who won the game um the thing i realized after the
01:27fact is my heart rate never i don't think moved at all because i heard a lot of you know
01:35that was
01:35stressful and all the lead changes all the lead lead changes etc um but to me it was i think
01:43it's
01:43because when we talked about games i could picture the team losing this was one of them i thought they
01:48could go 16 and 1 lose this game and be a sick like be the best team in the league
01:52and still lose
01:53the opener with a new coach and a new coordinator on the defensive side and a place where they never
01:58seem to play well and like kind of the one place where people look at josh what's wrong with you
02:03um and all that was fine that that all worked out and they hung and the offense looked like i
02:12expected
02:12the offense to look or wanted the offense to look and the defense had some problems but it wasn't
02:16awful um they took care of the main problem that they had last year which was the pass rush of
02:22the
02:22texans just making life miserable for the quarterback and by the fourth quarter i was hoping they'd win i
02:32prefer if they win but i made peace with i'm not too angry if they just went and battled a
02:37team that
02:38is probably going to be a playoff team again that looked like two of the best teams in the afc
02:43when the schedule came out and it looked that way when you watched them uh on sunday so when all
02:50is
02:50said and done you were in a coin flip game and you won it and that's good enough one of
02:55those good
02:55it's first blush stuff it you can read too much into week one of course we're gonna do that
03:04already doing it we're gonna you and i are gonna go deep on every little thing that we can probably
03:10imagine how about the bills and the ravens the only two afc teams that made the playoffs last year
03:15that won this week everybody else is off to a rocky start but uh in the press box this happens
03:22sometimes
03:22not every stadium sometimes we're separated from the radio tv people sometimes we're mingling sometimes
03:28we're in the same line to get a coffee or we'll never see each other like at the old bill
03:34stadium two
03:34totally different press boxes but i had the pleasure uh at halftime to run into eric wood
03:42and also seth payne who does he's one of our odyssey brothers down there in houston he does radio
03:48down there he played 10 years in the nfl he's from victor went to cornell uh spent some time in
03:56retirement living in the southern tier and now he's down in houston and he's a big deal down there
04:01doing uh doing radio but uh a lineman uh defensive tackle d lineman and you'll play he started a lot
04:09for the jaguars and the texans so he had a long i remember the name and i picture big guy
04:13but that's
04:14all i got very nice career especially for an ivy leaguer he's a fourth round pick back in uh 97
04:19but
04:20anyway both reactions from these interior linemen the same way like hey i bet you didn't have the over in
04:27this one and it was kind of like neither both sides both you know people who cover each team
04:33and all the things that nobody and these guys played the game for a long long time and smart
04:40guys on football embedded with these teams and in many ways observing training camp practices
04:46talking to everybody the coaching staff you name it and they're like who could have saw this
04:51and it just kind of it's validating for me because sometimes you feel like man am i out of touch
04:56right but here are two guys who are really smart about football and they didn't see it coming either
05:02and we're going to see way more things about these two teams that we didn't expect there's going to
05:07be some quick i think that you probably need to wait a month i think i'm not going to have
05:12a hard
05:13and fast opinion unless something really gets entrenched in these next couple of games that we see
05:20indelibly that i'm going to say all right that's what this team is but for now obviously big big win
05:27the fact that they were able to overcome keep their wits about them not buckle even though they almost
05:33did you know what they did buckle but the texans didn't pounce on it because the texans just as
05:40easily could have ended that game with an interception and it would have been on josh allen
05:44josh allen said it was a 50 50 decision and he picked the wrong one so you could grant him
05:49some
05:49grace i guess in that that well he was taking a shot and he just picked wrong it wasn't incompetence
05:54necessarily but it wasn't the receiver's fault i think is what i'm taking from that it wasn't the
05:58wrong route being run or so it was just these things happen it looked like he was throwing the ball
06:03away
06:04on the television shot of it because you can't see what's going on down the field it looked like he
06:08was
06:08firing the ball out of bounds and then it kept drifting back in and uh palmer wasn't there but
06:13lassiter was and of course he's kicking himself but that that's one of those plays that
06:19i don't know they they happened they they happened all the time when no one could beat the patriots
06:25there were there are always plays mixed in like that there is an element of luck that is involved
06:30but then there's kind of the swagger that comes with yeah we get lucky i'm throwing it down there
06:36because i think we're luckier than you are i think i'm better i think i'm luckier i think my guy's
06:40gonna make a play and it it tends to add up like to even out over the course of a
06:45season like oh we
06:45should have had that this call didn't go your way this it tends to even out there are moments you
06:50know
06:51you're in a playoff game and there's no coming back from it but this this is week one and yeah
06:56i if
06:57i'm if i'm the texans like we had that game if that guy just holds on to the ball and
07:01usually he would
07:01but he didn't and that stinks and i'm mad but you get to be you get to celebrate it on
07:06the other side
07:07too josh allen trusts his receivers and he says well my guy's gonna win this battle so i'm just
07:13gonna throw it up there and maybe i get a 46 yard pass interference like you did earlier in the
07:18game
07:18yeah like lassiter on uh on dj moore that sets up a touchdown so yeah i think that that's uh
07:25part of
07:26the charm of having josh allen as your quarterback is that he has that faith in his players and i'm
07:32gonna let it rip and sometimes bad things happen but more often than not amazing things happen and
07:37then sometimes nothing happens which is a gift which is what happened there because right i want
07:43the six points or a pass interference call or an incompletion the only bad thing would be a pick
07:50and uh it wasn't a pick however you got there doesn't matter uh would he like to have the
07:56throwback no because he dropped it so it doesn't this is football it's just the way that it works
08:02there are going to be bounces are going to be weird things that happen um you know every game's got
08:06oh that should have been a turnover in it and sometimes it goes your way sometimes it doesn't
08:11they got lucky on it went nobody's way so let's wait a few games and see how these that now
08:16it looks
08:16like a coin flip after a few games the if the coin flip starts landing on tails nothing then it's
08:23like
08:23well maybe this there's something wrong with this coin well there is a coin flip that the bills won
08:28on that play in particular there's a coin flip that they lost that they lost on the last real play
08:35of their previous game which was a catch or an interception or whatever it was that didn't go your
08:40way either i still don't have a strong position on whether cooks made the catch or not i just know
08:45it was really close and it didn't go the bills way well yesterday's or sunday's game was close and
08:50it did go the bills way we'll take it more often than not in these close games well actually it's
08:56a funny thing with the bills in this era it takes a million little things to go wrong for the
09:03bills
09:04for them to come out on the wrong side of a one score game and there are other days where
09:09they come
09:09out and they just throttle teams they very rarely get throttled so either they blow
09:14you out or it's a close game they win a lot of those they lose some of them but just
09:19some of
09:20the losses over the last five six years you can just picture night that the heat the overheated
09:26loss in miami was just crazy a thousand things went wrong the minnesota loss the philadelphia loss
09:32just little things that were these duels where i just any one of 10 things goes a different way the
09:37bills win the game stuff happens so i'm gonna accept lassiter not grabbing that ball the bills completing
09:42the pass to palmer and then really shutting it down with the defense that's that to me is the
09:47story of the game is it looks like trouble it looks like same old same old the stuff that happens
09:52when
09:52you're on the road against a good team and you let them hang around and all this stuff and then
09:56they
09:56stopped them not with an incomplete pass or a missed field goal or anything along those lines
10:01they had to get that quarterback on the ground and they did it twice in a row and the second
10:05time they
10:05got the ball out and that ended it so i take some solace in that all the stuff that we've
10:09been
10:10talking about and hearing from jim leonard uh where that has led to this uh high events thing
10:16is the the phrase sal's been using lately but a lot of stuff's gonna happen we're not gonna be
10:20passive about it we're gonna go get him so maybe we're sending an extra guy and because of that
10:25somebody's open downfield and we lose damn it that stinks that that happened but we think that we can
10:30get after this guy by sending a little pressure and they take him down twice to end the game so
10:34i i take
10:35some comfort in that i think there was some confusion in the defensive backfield but i also found
10:39myself 24 hours later gone bunch of new starters bunch of new backups new coordinator new head coach
10:49road game where you got killed last year and you've had trouble before and you come out with the win
10:58fine moving on and then you play four days later i would like for the bills to have shown a
11:03little bit
11:04more high event successes in the passing game and yes they did get the strip sacks of cj stroud i'm
11:12not
11:12talking about the front i'm talking about the secondary i don't know who had a good game in the
11:16bills secondary everybody either had a bad penalty christian benford got beat frequently throughout the
11:23game um holdings dpi's you name it there was just all over the place penalties i think for the bills
11:33right yeah and it was just jim leonard fell on the sword which is what a good coach would do
11:40any coach would i mean even bad coaches do that especially game one yeah it's coaching 101
11:45to say it's my fault i'm not going to throw anybody under the bus i'm not going to say you
11:50know
11:51it's my job to get these guys in position to where they're supposed to be but that soft underbelly of
11:57the defense didn't look much different to me and to be able to come up big with the play late
12:03the bills did that under mcdermott too and a lot of people like to look back on mcdermott and say
12:07well
12:08that defense and they kind of just get to a point where it just wasn't as aggressive as i wanted
12:12it to
12:12be therefore i don't really remember but how about the baltimore ravens game last year that they come
12:18up with a was terrell bernard again if i'm not mistaken oliver punched the ball out yeah on henry
12:24you're talking about yes yeah i mean it's just coming up with the big plays when they need yeah
12:27they're you're kind of white knuckling it for a bit in terms of hold on hold on just keep them
12:32out
12:32of the end zone and then they come up with a big play but that was kind of a i
12:36wouldn't say a
12:36hallmark of a sean mcdermott defense but he had several games like that where the defense would just
12:40bang let's make that play and they did it whereas over the course of the game it was just constantly
12:46on your heels so again not not knee-jerking this too much because i want to wait a month i
12:56don't
12:57know why i'm picking a month i don't know if maybe it should be six games but i think i'm
13:00just going
13:00to wait a month in theory is a quarter of the season so you're going to get some wishy-washiness
13:05probably from me or if you call in 803-0550 and you want to talk about what you loved or
13:11what you
13:11hated i may kind of sit the fence for a little bit but that's just i think that's prudent it's
13:18not as
13:18fun i get that i could i would be it would be more entertaining if i just said nope this
13:22is it obviously
13:23is a sign of this and this is a red flag here or they got this shorn up but um
13:29i guess one one thing
13:32that i will lean into is that i think patrick mahomes is all right i don't know that we need
13:39a second or third game to see that patrick mahomes against a really good defense he was running the
13:44ball he threw it all the different but yeah he had a couple of he had two interceptions um he
13:50had a he
13:51had a couple of bad plays but denver is one of the best defenses in the nfl they were a
13:57chic pick to
13:59go to the super bowl and maybe even win it and here come the chiefs and of course kenneth walker
14:05changed that offense it's a different look when they're running dominantly like that and patrick
14:12mahomes hasn't really had that in his in his quiver since he's joined the chiefs so to have
14:19kenneth walker out there doing what he was doing and then patrick mahomes can pick his spots a little
14:24bit more anyways i think from anybody wondering if the chiefs are going to struggle now they still
14:31might for all kinds of reasons they still might sure but it's probably not going to be because
14:35patrick mahomes doesn't have it anymore it didn't no it didn't look that way it looked like he's um
14:40he looks all right and even even kelsey kelsey's a non-factor for
14:45the whole game and then just gets loose and kind of wins it for him on that not wins it
14:50but seals it
14:51on that play kind of you know takes away any of denver's hope on that deep deep play it didn't
14:55end
14:56up in the end zone got down to like the four or whatever it was um you said this right
15:01at the top
15:02of the show and i didn't jump in but i wanted to because i but because i'm a polite top
15:07rope
15:08no i was gonna just interject i guess is the word i'm looking for you're a gentleman after one week
15:16yes everybody overreacts to one week but i also think everybody overreacts to the playoffs and i
15:24thought the playoffs last year felt off the whole thing felt off and it goes back to there's an article
15:31a couple weeks ago where you re over you overreact to the playoffs because that's your last chance
15:35that's right and so let me spend the whole the whole i was gonna say semester spend the whole
15:40off season thinking about what happened there but this article that came out a couple whatever it
15:46was a month ago or something about the patriots and how now that they're the hunted how it's going
15:50to be different and i just thought it was so misplaced like the the attention on the patriots was
15:56misplaced they're not the hunted that's not the team people are thinking about when they think about
16:00the afc and it was like in denver they they were in the championship you know they host
16:06i don't think that's the team we should be thinking all of it felt fraudulent like it's the patriots as
16:11the reigning afc champion like i guess i guess they did win this tournament that was held in january and
16:19the afc um the afc portion of it but as you said the only two playoff teams from the eat
16:27from the afc
16:28that won their games this week are buffalo and baltimore so denver loses new england loses i would
16:35say pretty embarrassingly um houston loses i think they obviously they still look like a contender
16:45but the teams that have been consistently in the conversation are the ones that we're talking
16:50about as winners after week one and that's the bills and the ravens and oh look the chiefs are back
16:55and those are the teams we tend to think about for the past several years this blip on the radar
17:02of
17:02last year's playoffs that existed without mahomes and with the bills getting knocked out early and
17:10the ravens are not in the chance like i think big picture we're we might be settling in my my
17:17overreaction takeaway is yeah i think we can throw out last year's playoffs that felt fraudulent to me
17:24when we're trying to think about who's going to make it this year that's kind of the impression that i
17:28got and it's been gnawing at me the whole time the whole offseason it's just it patriots broncos
17:38may stidham asc championship it's like crash two helmets exploding boom get some it just there are
17:47somebody wins it every year it doesn't mean i i doesn't mean we have to carry that over like
17:56some breaks happen for those teams and i'm not saying they won't be in contention for playoff spots
18:00it's just the way that things are being talked about as if you've got to respect that those two
18:05teams were where they were well i don't i don't think i do i think the bills and the chiefs
18:10are
18:10two teams to think about i think the ravens are a third team to think about i think the bangles
18:14are
18:14going to be a factor because of burrow and then you're going to get down to the herbert class like
18:18as it's been for several years i just i don't think those teams necessarily have broken through
18:23because of one kind of toe dipped in the water of playoff success we uh we need to self-correct
18:30here
18:30because i think that uh especially with mike tomlin getting fired last year and the excitement over
18:37the ravens this year the ravens didn't they they finished second in the afc north last year didn't
18:41go to the playoffs the only two teams that did oh okay you know the steelers and the bills this
18:47weekend but still as i was saying it it felt wrong okay so yeah the playoffs without jackson
18:53i said it was a thing yeah i said it earlier i said it earlier all right but yeah so
18:57steelers
18:58with their little and aaron rogers um but yeah everything does seem fake the bills and the
19:08chiefs are the only things that seem kind of right and again we're throwing in all kinds of caveats
19:16we're slathering on the asterisk here with week one hot takes but to watch what our eyes tell us
19:27and see the chiefs do what they did and the bills win in the way that they did those things
19:32seemed
19:33to be a calming like oh right football's back this is that's the warm blanket of what you're supposed
19:41to expect you're not you're not shocked or jarred in any way with those two teams as opposed to the
19:51cardinals beating the chargers or the well the jets and the titans that was a foot we have a fun
19:56clip
19:56about a titans fan who called in that pillow fight yeah to a radio about how devastated it's great it
20:03sounds like every caller every good caller to gr during the drought is what this guy sounds like
20:08just it's awesome but i mean there's so many just weird things i mean we can go back to the
20:13wednesday thursday games super bowl rematch ends with 23 total points scored the rams score seven
20:22we were wondering if you should just take the unders in all the games because well the quarterbacks
20:27aren't playing as much in the preseason and they don't have that fourth game anymore so starting
20:33quarterbacks really only play maybe one game in a couple of series some don't play it at all
20:37because their coaches want to preserve them for the season don't want to risk any injury and then
20:42they're misfiring they don't look like they quite have the rhythm they're not in a groove and then
20:48the bears score 59 i think they broke a record for most points scored in an opening weekend and ben
20:57johnson came out and said their goal is to break the point scoring record for a season that's fun well
21:03they're trending they have they're trending well but i mean just so much going on i guess jaguars
21:10over the browns all right okay that looked right that that look but so much of it just out of
21:16whack
21:16the vikings with a backup quarterback just destroying the packers well they had to come back a lot but
21:25they still won by 17 oh i know they scored the final whatever it was 29 points of the game
21:29or
21:29something they pulled away i mean we're just used to the giants being dog meat and the cowboys obviously
21:37they're always overrated because they're the cowboys but the giants just handled the cowboys
21:42and then the chiefs yeah we're just going to win by three touchdowns against one of the best defenses
21:48in the nba but anyways there were so many things out there that just didn't seem the lions needing to
21:53come back to beat the saints in overtime and barely holding on it was a two-point conversion
21:58that would have won the game the the saints chose to go for two and did not convert rather than
22:05tie and force ot so tyler shuck threw for 410 yards in that game if you're a bills fan you
22:11have to be
22:11feeling like you're home like yeah these are our guys this is what they do everybody else is still
22:16trying to figure out who they are what they do and the bills still are too i mean behind the
22:20behind
22:21the curtain they're still figuring out who they are obviously with their first time head coach and
22:25their first time nfl defensive coordinator but at least after one week you can look at it and say
22:31that's them that's who they've been and to give you an idea of the perception of them around the league
22:39i just went to pull up the all the scores just so that i made sure i didn't forget any
22:43games and
22:44before i could get to that on espn.com i tripped over the 2026 nfl power rankings how all 32
22:50teams stack up
22:51for week two um the bills in the preseason rankings were third after one week of watching everybody in
22:59the nfl bills have moved to first so the number one team in the power rankings at espn um is
23:06the
23:06bills and it says dj moore's five catches for 100 yards were somewhat aided when houston safety reed
23:13blankenship went for an interception and missed badly giving more an easy path to the 43-yard touchdown
23:18more also did a lot of things that didn't end up in his receiving totals a 46-yard pass interference
23:22penalty and later an illegal contact flag he also slapped away what appeared to be a very likely
23:27interception for houston safety kalen bullock it was everything the bills could have asked for when
23:33they traded for more in march and that's the whole write-up about the bills who they have moved up
23:36from
23:36number three to number one in the power rankings so that was whom which outlet uh espn it's aaron
23:42shots writing that part about dj moore but we're trying to find out if did he steal some of your
23:47dj moore stuff i know you wrote about no i wanted to know if he i don't think i heard
23:51the name dalton
23:51kincaid in his in there no he only talked about the non-qb newcomer debut for the team and it
23:57was uh
23:58dj moore but oh he was he was assigned he had an assignment seems like he's supposed to write about
24:02seems like it yeah um but yeah dj moore was
24:07a major factor and yeah let's let's do kincaid um because dj moore helped dalton kincaid get to
24:15those 130 yards i think that's probably right um and i think dj moore helped and you know josh allen
24:22said it and i believe him and then you watch the replay and you can see it dj moore helped
24:26create the
24:27space for josh palmer on the final touchdown and it's just the the trickle down effect of having
24:33a guy that they're concerned about is real um and has existed the whole time and the bills have just
24:39been trying to play without it knowing hey we've got we've got five guys out in a pattern right now
24:44that we trust and that's cool but if one of them scares the other team that's going to help the
24:49other
