00:00Mike Schoep and the Bulldog at our new time. This is the earliest I've ever been up.
00:07Everything is sideways for me right now.
00:10It really is. I mean, it's been 24 years, and it might seem ridiculous. I don't know.
00:17You and I were both fine with this, and I think maybe you were eager for it.
00:21Yes. This is something I've wanted for five years or more.
00:24I've never wanted it, but I never hated the idea. It's just like all morning, I had an hour less
00:33time.
00:33It was like turning the clocks ahead. I had an hour less time.
00:37My process, you might want to know. I don't want to tell you what it is. It's so lazy and
00:42bad.
00:42It's embarrassing. Right. Same. Same.
00:44But cutting the grass, I won't cut the grass before 10 a.m. That's a personal rule of mine.
00:50I don't like it when my neighbors cut the grass. Well, they don't cut their own grass.
00:53When the landscaper's coming and cut the grass before 10 a.m., it's annoying to you.
00:57The one house can be like 8 o'clock, and maybe I'm up. Usually I'm up.
01:02This is really not the earliest I've ever been up.
01:06But 10 is my personal rule. So today was like, you know, at 10, I'll do it.
01:10And then it was 10, and I was in the middle of something else.
01:13I'm like, uh-oh. I better get this done.
01:17Right.
01:17Because, you know, I want to be here by 1.
01:19I went to see my barber.
01:24Oral Roberts.
01:24Oral Roberts from Trinidad and Tobago.
01:27I went to see him today.
01:28I have every six weeks 11 a.m.
01:31It was nice, and I've just punched that in.
01:33I get a text message and an email a few days in advance reminding me,
01:37hey, your appointment's coming up.
01:38It's always Mondays, and it's always 11 a.m.
01:42And, yes, as I'm leaving today, I said, can we maybe move these?
01:47No, it's fine for now.
01:49But in my head, I'm like, I'm going to want to go there at 10, not 11,
01:53because it's just like everything's all a jar in my head right now.
01:58I don't get my hair cut at a set time because there isn't one.
02:02But when I, like Friday, I got my hair cut.
02:04And then at the end, like, all right, let's make your next appointment.
02:07And anything she says, like, up to one, I'm like, okay.
02:11Right.
02:12That's different now.
02:13Like, I can't get my hair cut at one.
02:15That's right.
02:15No.
02:16Like, that's different now.
02:17Cutting it close.
02:18There are ways I haven't even thought of yet.
02:19Dude, I did that.
02:20I'm talking about haircuts.
02:20Cutting it close?
02:21Yeah.
02:22Sorry.
02:22There are ways I haven't even thought of yet that are going to have to be a
02:25little bit tweaked, you know, assuming this lasts.
02:29And here's to it lasting.
02:31Let me just say that.
02:33I'm so with you.
02:33I'm very happy to be on an hour earlier,
02:36because it means we get done an hour earlier,
02:37and that's what I was seeking.
02:40So I'm excited about it.
02:41That seems good, too.
02:42I hope everyone else is happy with the rescheduling that's happened,
02:46especially you out there.
02:48I don't know if you're tuning in.
02:49Like, where's Brad?
02:51Brad's been on noon to two.
02:52Did we already get to where's Brad?
02:54Noon to three or one to three.
02:56He's been here that long already?
02:57I don't know.
02:58We got to where's Brad?
02:59This is new for us.
03:00We're all here.
03:01Portions of Buffalo Football Monday are brought to you by Tim Hortons,
03:06the official coffee of the Jeremy and Joe Morning Show on WGR.
03:11Start your day strong with Tim Hortons and the Bills.
03:14Well, the Bills.
03:18I don't think you really have the right to ask for anything more than yesterday.
03:25And I know it wasn't perfect.
03:28I mean, they got pretty lucky.
03:30I think they did great.
03:32Allen's great.
03:33Pulled it out.
03:34Big plays.
03:35I mean, you got every bounce with the turnovers, right?
03:39You got all the fumbles, both sides.
03:42Allen fumbled.
03:43Cook fumbled.
03:44Stroud twice.
03:45You recovered all of them.
03:47That's right.
03:47You have the Lasseter play at the end, which is almost a blooper that he doesn't catch.
03:51How about the, you know, Josh Allen scores his second rushing touchdown on a sneak.
03:56What was the play before meant to accomplish?
03:58That quick snap throw to Shakir that a guy got his hand on that could have been a 99-yard
04:05interception return.
04:06I mean, there were three Texans right there.
04:09That was an interesting one.
04:10That was a little scary.
04:11So they got away with some stuff.
04:13But I think, you know, again, starting with Allen, as always, they were good.
04:18It wasn't like they deserved to be blown out or anything like that.
04:22But you got all the little stuff.
04:25The random stuff you got.
04:27The tip passes and the fumbles and whatever else.
04:30Yeah.
04:30Even as great a play.
04:33It's a great throw.
04:35It's a great job by Moore to keep his concentration on his long touchdown.
04:39I mean, that is just a hair from being either incomplete or also maybe a pick six.
04:47Yeah.
04:48So close.
04:48With Blankenship over there.
04:49I mean, so, you know.
04:51That's one, I think, where you have to give it to them.
04:53Right.
04:54The margins are.
04:55They did.
04:56They did.
04:56You know, they cut it close in spots.
04:58But, yeah, I don't think it would be fair to ask for anything.
05:01They scored 36.
05:02Let me finish the sentence.
05:03Fair to ask for anything more.
05:05They scored 36 points in a place where, I mean, going in, I think I probably said Thursday and Friday,
05:12I get to 24, I think I'm probably home.
05:16Like, their offense is not that scary.
05:19And even with the new Bills defense, I just wouldn't expect this team to be able to race up and
05:23down the field on you.
05:24But they kind of did.
05:26And you needed to be able to score like that.
05:29I mean, you tell me Houston gets the 31 points in this game going into it before seeing a single
05:35snap of it.
05:35I'm like, well, we're 0-1.
05:37I just don't, I don't expect the Bills to be able to score 30 points on this team.
05:43And, yeah, I mean, they obviously did.
05:47And the offense really did.
05:49It was a very good day if you have been in the camp of wait until you get a load
05:56of Joe Brady without having to answer to a boss above him on the coaching staff.
06:01You know, McDermott is gone.
06:03Brady's in charge.
06:05And maybe they're going to really air it out.
06:08And they really kind of aired it out.
06:10I mean, I don't know that that'll be some sort of a stamp that is there every week.
06:15I mean, different opponents, whatever.
06:18But they, their guys beat their guys.
06:21You know, Josh Palmer beats Lasseter at the end there.
06:25Moore beat, like, they did the thing that they have not been able to do, which is get open on
06:31sticky man-to-man coverage.
06:33And it worked.
06:35So if you've been thinking, wait until you see Josh Allen and Joe Brady in this offense without the defensive
06:43-minded head coach maybe standing in the way, for a week, it's a very good day for that stance.
06:49And you even heard, if you paid attention to the telecast, the crew on CBS referenced maybe more than once
06:56that Josh Allen thought likewise.
06:58That Joe Brady was going to be, you know, sort of like the cuffs are off kind of mentality.
07:04I don't remember what the exact quote used by CBS was.
07:07But they intimated that Allen was looking forward to seeing what the game plan and the play calls would be
07:14with Brady completely in charge.
07:16I'm interested in kind of tracking that.
07:19We'll have Ross on every week again.
07:22Ross Tucker, he's the one who said it.
07:24So what?
07:25Allen says it to Ross in a meeting.
07:27I imagine that's how that happens.
07:29I think publicly that's what you would always say.
07:32I mean, Allen is really good at being diplomatic about whatever counts as being controversial.
07:37Think back to like when Diggs was here and that was, you know, sketchy at times.
07:42And he would always sort of find a way to negotiate that without completely dismissing any possibility that the player
07:50was disgruntled.
07:51But then also, you know, like I'm good.
07:54We're good.
07:55He's got a good way of that, of doing that.
07:58And so I wonder how authoritative he might have been on that.
08:04I think publicly he would be like, you know, he'd say both things like these guys do when they're really
08:10kind of, quote, good at it.
08:12Is, yeah, well, Sean was great.
08:16His record speaks for himself, itself.
08:19Brady, maybe certain things will always be different.
08:23I'm not trying to quote an imaginary Allen quote, but, you know, I think there's a way you would do
08:28that.
08:28I think the point I want to make is I think ultimately that is the message he would want you
08:34to believe.
08:36That's the message we all kind of wanted to believe before yesterday was that, well, not that the Bills were
08:44ever bad.
08:45I mean, they've been great on offense.
08:46Maybe I'm wrong to think that everybody wanted to believe that their offense would be less shackled without McDermott.
08:56But I think most people probably would hope for it.
08:59You know, it's also really fun when Allen is out in the wild like yesterday, kind of.
09:03So I think that would be what they would think we want to hear.
09:11And then you got a game.
09:13Well, I mean, this is really separate because that conversation was Saturday or whenever Ross meets with players.
09:19And then then you got the game that you got.
09:22And I sort of still wonder if it happened mostly or more because of this or because of just kind
09:32of like circumstances.
09:33I mean, you had you had to race with Houston, maybe with Cook, like there was something about the matchup
09:39that they didn't like.
09:41So or maybe there was something out wide in the passing game that they did like.
09:44Yeah.
09:45So I don't know.
09:46I mean, what we're going to do this week is or at least today, because there's another game on Thursday.
09:52I'm kind of happy about about that because week one is when we tend to overreact to everything.
09:59And like, are they a juggernaut?
10:01I don't know.
10:03But yesterday was a great day.
10:05Every season is different with with defense.
10:07Not to sort of ramble on to another point, but, you know, like Houston and defense.
10:13What have we known or thought we've known for years when it comes to defense quarterback and by extension offense.
10:22If you're good, you're good.
10:23And guys like Allen don't have bad ears.
10:26I mean, they just it's like almost it's permanent.
10:30What he gives you, Burrow and Jackson and the like, what they give you is it's permanent.
10:36The bar is very high.
10:37The bar doesn't move like the their offense.
10:40I mean, you had what last year.
10:42We've got the lowest average depth of target in the NFL.
10:46I mean, how many games did they win?
10:47And it wasn't because of their defense.
10:49They still killed 12 games.
10:50Right.
10:51So offense is really reliable when you have it.
10:56Defense isn't.
10:57And to an extent, we've seen that with the Bills, even like with the same good players.
11:01It's been less consistent.
11:03All I'm saying is Houston doesn't have to be good.
11:06Like it's still a league where offense is going to dictate.
11:11And maybe they'll be great again.
11:15And yesterday will seem to them like a fluke.
11:18But I don't know.
11:20I never want to assume that defense is going to be the same year to year.
11:24It's not that it wasn't a great day.
11:25Right.
11:25Right.
11:26I mean, the thing about them, though, is that there's no – usually there's more.
11:31I've been pointing it out.
11:32You know, we talked to a few different Houston people in the run-up to this game because we had,
11:36you know, so much more time for, you know, the opener.
11:40And looking at their depth chart, there's only one change on the defensive side of the ball.
11:44And it's a guy that has tons of experience and won a Super Bowl in Philadelphia.
11:48Like I said, they're not like some fly-by-night guy.
11:50Like Reed Blanket Ship's a respectable idea.
11:52Maybe even viewed as an upgrade for what they already had.
11:55So, I was expecting maybe very similar to what we got last year, not eight sacks and 12 quarterback hits
12:04necessarily, but, like, they're going to win their share of downs.
12:07It's going to be hard.
12:09But I'll be alive at the end and I'll have a chance because that was even as bad as last
12:13year's game was there.
12:14That was still the game where, you know, they had the ball and had a chance.
12:18So, I thought it would be more like that with, like, you know, 10 fewer points each, right?
12:24Like 26-21 is a lot more reasonable idea for how this game would have ended and that's very similar
12:30to last year's game.
12:32And instead, we got, like, nobody is stopping anyone.
12:35And, you know, how much that played into what the Bills did in their passing game, you know, I don't
12:41know.
12:42Like, maybe once it's 24-21 at half, right?
12:45It's 24-21 at halftime.
12:47Do you come out in the second half thinking, like, all right, we're just going to have to – we're
12:50going to have to get to 40, maybe.
12:52Like, we're going to have to get to 35.
12:54We're going to have to score, so let's just keep going here.
12:57And – because they really did not keep at the running game in the second half.
13:04I still haven't gone and looked, but I will.
13:07It just felt like very early in the second half they went, like, all right, that's not really working.
13:11Let's not waste our time.
13:14And it was really on the passing game to make the offense go.
13:18I mean, Cook only had 13 carries on the day.
13:21And I got to guess, like, 10 of those are in the first half.
13:25But, again, I got to go look and make sure.
13:27Because they were running it effectively.
13:29Like, when the game started, like, okay, well, you know, I'm all about give me DJ Moore, established early, give
13:35them something to worry about, and all that kind of stuff.
13:38That didn't happen.
13:39No.
13:39And when they started out running effectively, I'm like, all right, well, I guess we're going to have to –
13:43I'm going to have to press pause on that for now.
13:46But, boy, as soon as that dried up, they seemed ready to do something else.
13:52And, you know, that's to their credit.
13:53And, again, maybe that's a part of the loosening of the whole thing without McDermott, you know, standing atop the
14:01pyramid.
14:02Because it certainly, circumstantially, it would be easy to understand Joe Brady feeling like, my instinct here is to throw
14:11it more.
14:12But, you know, the game plan was this.
14:15And I want to, you know, I have a boss to please.
14:18Now I don't.
14:20Well, we'll see if it isn't a good question for our 4 o'clock guest.
14:24Like, maybe he'll tell us.
14:27Dawkins.
14:27Yep.
14:28You know, he likes to say things.
14:31But will he like to say them with us?
14:33That's the question.
14:33About yesterday's game, every Monday.
14:35I don't know.
14:35Will we be able to get him to like to say things to us?
14:38Yes, that's it.
14:39I don't know.
14:40Because this is a new relationship.
14:41The only time I've ever interacted with him was at the roast.
14:44Same.
14:45And, you know, I don't really even barely.
14:48I said something about, like, don't answer our calls, dude.
14:50You're good.
14:52You're young.
14:52You're up and coming.
14:54People seem to like you.
14:55You don't need to be tied to us.
14:56Like, that was, you know, being self-deprecating.
14:58Now he is.
14:59Now he's not young and up and coming.
15:00Now he's tied to us.
15:02I'm a fan.
15:03I've said many times on the air, Dawkins, whenever we have a soundbite from Dawkins, like, he's the most interesting
15:08guy to listen to.
15:09Alan is so, you know, safe all the time.
15:12And, you know, whatever, fine.
15:14It's not like it's a problem for him.
15:16But Dawkins will be a little bit more, he's just different.
15:20So I'm excited about that.
15:22How much of the Bills' willingness to throw the ball downfield in this game came from their either learning as
15:32the game was starting,
15:33or even confidence and, you know, feeling like going into the game that this would be a good thing for
15:40them,
15:40is that they could block Houston.
15:43Like, for me, this game was not, I was not optimistic for what we got offensively because of the hell
15:54that Houston raises on defense up front.
15:57And the last two years, especially last year, is why anybody would have said that, is that Alan just got
16:05destroyed in that game.
16:07And so how do you game plan, how do you expect to go down there and basically try to win
16:16the same way as you went in there last year?
16:19Like, you know, they probably didn't, but they got the job done.
16:23I mean, there were a lot of these, you always need, I mean, you always need the pocket to hold
16:29up for long enough.
16:30I mean, the pass to Palmer, a lot of the big plays yesterday, it's close to breaking down.
16:37I mean, Alan just gets it off in time.
16:40But, you know, all I'm saying is, they were able to block the Texans, and then, okay, now I can
16:47wait for DJ Moore to get open, you know, 20 yards, or Kincaid, 20 yards downfield, or Palmer.
16:53Without that, those guys are moot.
16:56Like, there's no game there if you can't hold up in the pocket.
17:00But that happened.
17:01You know, that was a big result for them yesterday, is that they were not, you know, it wasn't just
17:07breakdowns.
17:08They were under duress every time he dropped back, like, really is how it felt last year.
17:12And, yeah, I mean, I haven't even seen what the official count on hurries was, but it had to be,
17:20like, half a dozen, I think.
17:22It was a very calm day back there.
17:25Easy for me to say.
17:26You know, Alan did get bumped by, I think, one of his own guys on one play where he had,
17:33I think, Shakir breaking in the middle of the end zone.
17:37I think they ended up with a field goal on that.
17:39It was before Houston took, you know, took the lead late, the drive that preceded that for the Bills.
17:44I think he had Shakir, but he got bumped into.
17:48It was not the time he looked like he hurt his hand.
17:50It was another time.
17:51So, like, I don't know even if that counts as a pressure, but, like, his linemen, kind of like the
17:55Dawkins play from the Chief playoff game a couple years ago,
17:58where Chris Jones pushes him into Allen, and that knocks him a little bit, and it makes the throw errant.
18:04There was one of those, but, yeah, man, I mean, he really, he operated a lot more cleanly than I
18:12would have ever expected.
18:13Let's go to Chris here.
18:14Hi, Chris.
18:16Hey, how's it going, guys?
18:17Thanks for having me on.
18:18Hey, listen, I just want to say, great play by Greg Rousseau.
18:23Von Miller called it out a few years ago saying this guy's going to be the guy.
18:28I'm just hoping that this resolves a 30-year problem of having a Bruce Smith on the line that can
18:34dial one up when the game's on the line.
18:39What's the problem?
18:40Or just the Bills not having an all-time great pass rusher, you mean, that part?
18:45Yeah, well, no, I just mean, like, it seemed like back in the day, Bruce Smith, game on the line,
18:51when we needed that play, he could dial it up.
18:54Yeah, he's the best ever.
18:55He was the best ever.
18:57Absolutely.
18:57Yeah.
18:58You're not always going to have the best ever.
19:01But Russo came through big yesterday.
19:03I mean, both he and Deion Walker, like, what I think you really want, look, I don't think the Bills,
19:11we'll see how this all unfurls with Jim Leonard.
19:14You know, like, maybe they end up with some just hair-on-fire, hell-raising defense, even with this personnel,
19:22or maybe it takes a draft or two, whatever.
19:25But a lot did not go right for them on that side.
19:29They gave up a lot of yards.
19:30They gave up a lot of third downs.
19:31They gave up – this gave up a lot.
19:34But the game is on the line, and Deion Walker beats the doors off his guy to, like, set Houston
19:40back right away.
19:41They've got to burn a timeout, and then Russo wins.
19:43So – and that's not even – that's really not Leonard versus McDermott, passive versus aggressive.
19:50That's just – guys won.
19:51Like, both of those guys' job would have been the same last year or, for the case of Russo, his
19:58entire career.
19:59Go beat your guy, get to the quarterback.
20:01Murray's lining up might be different, and that could impact it.
20:03But as far as Walker goes, he's in the middle of the defensive line, and he just drummed his guy
20:08and made a play.
20:10Well, also, Russo had a great start to the game.
20:13I mean, he has two tackles on running plays, if I remember right.
20:17Maybe one was a Stroud stop.
20:20But then you have a fumble on the third play, too.
20:22Like, the first three plays, he was –
20:24Bookends for the game here.
20:26Yep, yep.
20:26But, come on – thank you, Chris.
20:28Like, I don't know.
20:31Don't we have a book on Russo?
20:32Like, don't we – maybe it's different.
20:35Maybe it'll be different if he's used different – yeah, I don't know.
20:38Different numbers, different, you know, weights in some cases.
20:43I think probably it's because – I gave myself the credit yesterday for Russo because of that blackjack tournament we
20:50played in together.
20:51Oh, I see.
20:52And I feel like he gained some confidence from that.
20:55That probably was why – he's not Bruce Smith.
20:58The caller didn't say he was Bruce Smith.
20:59But, I mean, yeah, we haven't had the best defensive end pass rusher in history for 40 years.
21:05Correct.
21:0730 years.
21:08Correct.
21:09But that's not a fair comp for any player, you know.
21:13All he's saying there, I think, was, like, hopefully Russo is good.
21:15It's nice to see somebody make a play at the end.
21:16And that's right.
21:17Right.
21:17That's right.
21:18Which is exactly what they did.
21:19And that can right a lot of wrongs for you, you know.
21:22I mean, most of these games – you know, we had one guy who called us yesterday, like,
21:26I just would have liked them to be in more control and more – like, oh, so you wanted them
21:30to be ahead by 15 points all game long.
21:33I mean, that happens sometimes when you play the Jets.
21:37Usually.
21:38Or some other, like, Carolina last year, where it's just, like, very early on, like, wow, rocking chair city, no
21:44stress at all.
21:46That's not usually how it's going to go.
21:49No, that's why I said first about this game yesterday is I just don't think we have the right to
21:55ask for anything more than that.
21:58And they easily could have lost any one of those bounces.
22:02If the Lasseter – if he just makes an interception maybe you would have made, you know, assuming you get
22:08down there, like he was down there.
22:11Right.
22:11You'd have to run all that distance.
22:13But if somehow I just get to be standing there, I can catch that ball.
22:16Yeah, you're just standing there.
22:16I can catch that ball.
22:17You might, you know –
22:18Yeah.
22:19If that happens, where are we today?
22:22Like, we're not – phones are off the hook with how easily they got gashed in the air and just
22:28whatever else you want to pick at.
22:31That's not what happened.
22:32I mean, that's – I feel like they got away with one yesterday because of the turnover bounces and the
22:37drop there at the end by Houston.
22:39Yeah, no, we're – if Lasseter picks that pass off, we're at, like, oh, great, you want to be bold
22:46and you want Josh Allen to air it out.
22:48And, like, you were in position to kick a go-ahead field goal and it's Drake May on Wednesday night
22:53in Seattle.
22:54Like, it's not – you know, it's close enough anyway.
22:57You cost your team a chance.
22:58In that case, it was to tie the game.
23:00In this case, it would have been to go ahead.
23:02You know, you wouldn't have been in – I wouldn't have felt great about kicking a field goal there because
23:07now they can still beat you with a field goal and they easily got into field goal range.
23:11The fact that they needed the touchdown is why you got the plays you got from Rousseau because they're not
23:17even trying to throw anymore if they're down there.
23:20They're just running the clock down to zero and just, you know, basically kneeling.
23:23They – I mean, we don't have to go forward with this, but just, like, also, however, they would have
23:30been playing with the lead.
23:31And what you got there from Houston on that last drive was they were aggressive and they made a couple
23:36plays through the air, even maybe one on – no, I guess there wasn't a fourth down play.
23:41They would have had to run out the clock on the – probably.
23:44And that's what they couldn't do previously.
23:48Like, they had a drive with the lead, the drive before that.
23:51The Bills punt down 31-30 with 545 left.
23:57And Houston goes three and out.
23:59Run, run, dump off to Schultz.
24:01You know, you might have gotten that from Houston after the Lasseter pick if there had been one, you know?
24:08Conservative.
24:08That's what usually you get.
24:10Anyway, we don't know.
24:11So – and it doesn't matter because none of that actually happened.
24:15Thanks again, Chris, for the call.
24:16803-0550 if you want to join us next.
24:19So, yep, we're 2-6 now.
24:23I keep looking up there and it looks weird, but it's too – it's right, right?
24:27Yes.
24:28So, okay.
24:30We have Deion Dawkins Mondays starting today, 4 o'clock, all times Eastern.
24:36And Sal will join us at 5.
24:38And that's it, right?
24:39That's the list?
24:40That is who we've got on the show today.
24:42Okay.
24:42And it ends at 6.
24:43And it ends at 6.
24:45So, hurry.
24:49Don't miss this opportunity.
24:50Get down to that store right now.
24:53Because tomorrow, well, it'll be open again.
24:55But right now, call to action.
24:58All right.
24:59Mike Schopen, the Bulldog here.
25:00Bill's over the Texans yesterday.
25:01A lot to talk about from it.
25:03We'll be back to do more of that after this break.
25:05This is WB.
25:06This is WB.
25:06This is WB.
