00:22Let us pray, praise honour and glory be to you O Christ who your
00:30faithless disciple Judas sold for a vile sum of money to the Jews who were persecuting
00:35you and conspiring against your life. Root out, I beg you, from my heart all evil love
00:42of any creature. Grant that I may never prefer anything to you. May I always show the most

05:06may be for your glory and for the remission of my sins.
05:11Remove mercifully from me all distrust and unnecessary weakness,
05:16and confirm and establish my soul whole in you.

12:51The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who
12:59loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.
13:08Lord, Judas, but not Judas Iscariot, said, what has happened that you are going to reveal
13:15yourself to us and not to the world? Jesus replied, if anyone loves me, he will obey my
13:25word and my Father will love him, we will come to him and to take up residence with him.
13:33The person who does not love me does not obey my words. The words you hear are not mine,
13:42but the Father's who sent me. I have spoken these things while staying with you, but the
13:50advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything

14:04Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give it to you as the

14:14Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage. You heard me say, I am going away and

14:23coming back to you. If you truly love me, you will be glad that I am going to the Father,
14:31because the Father is greater than I. I have told you before now, before it happens,
14:39so that when it happens, you may believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of

14:46world is coming. He has no power over me, but I am doing just what the Father commanded me,
14:54so that the world may know that I love the Father. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be

15:09We have two very important verses in today's reading. Verse 15. If you love me, keep my commandments.
15:24And the essence is repeated again in verse 23 because of their importance. If a man loves me,
15:33he will keep my words. These words of Jesus are particularly unambiguous. There is no other way
15:46of looking at these two sayings. If we profess to be a Christian, we must abide by the commandments of
15:56Jesus. Namely, to love God above everything else, and to love our neighbours as ourselves.
16:07As we have also seen on other occasions, these two laws refer also to the Ten Commandments,
16:17which sit underneath the Great Commandments.
16:23A Christian must strive to live according to God's laws, even though he knows that he will
16:30be forgiven for his failings.
16:35Forgiveness is not an opportunity for us to ignore the law.
16:42After all, if we know the speed limit is on the road, and we deliberately drive at twice
16:49that speed. The judge will not be impressed if we apologise in court, for he will believe
16:57we are sorry we were caught, or rather than being sorry we were going too fast.
17:05Jesus knows that it will be a struggle for us to keep the law, that we will always, at some
17:13point, from time to time, fail. And that is why he stands there, ready to forgive us.
17:23But it is incumbent upon us to try to keep the law in the first place.
17:33The point is this, if we love Jesus, then we will want to keep to the law.
17:39Whether we are eventually able or not, we will have given it our best effort.
17:49Jesus has promised that whoever keeps his commandments, he will love and reveal himself too.
17:59So let us just spend a few moments and consider our relationship with him.
18:06For these are truly beautiful words, and we need to fully understand their significance.
18:15Verse 23 provides us with a summary of today's gospel, and gives us three steps in building
18:24a relationship with Jesus.
18:28First of all, we need to love him.
18:32What does this mean?
18:37I am sure that we have, each and every one of us, different experiences of love.
18:44Some good and some bad. Hopefully, more of the former rather than the latter.
18:52However, when we love someone, I think it is probably fair to say that we want to spend time with
19:00them.
19:00We spend time thinking of them.
19:04And if it is a strong love, other things around us lose some of their appeal.
19:12So when we come to love Jesus, we want to spend time talking with him in prayer, sharing our thoughts.
19:22We want to spend our day thinking of him, spending otherwise idle moments in meditation,
19:30being aware of his presence everywhere around us.
19:36When we love Jesus, worldly things no longer matter so much to us.
19:43We gain a more heavenly perspective.
19:47Meaning that the things that used to be important to us,
19:52houses, cars, bank balances, investments, and expensive holidays, for example,
20:01assume their real importance as mere things that come and go,
20:06that pass us by, that might be here today, but gone tomorrow.
20:16Secondly, when we are in love, we have a desire to please the object of our affection.
20:26How can we please Jesus?
20:30By doing what he asks of us, obeying his commandments.
20:38I know, there might only be two of them,
20:42but they are virtually impossible to keep to all the time.
20:49But he knows this, and he understands how much effort we make.
20:55He stands there waiting for us to say sorry,
20:58and to give us that warm, spiritual hug that confession brings.
21:06In the same way, as there are times when we upset our husbands or our wives,
21:13our loved ones, quite by accident,
21:16despite our best efforts to the contrary.
21:21A reconciliation is only a tender word or two away.
21:27So Christ waits for us, with tenderness and mercy.
21:37Thirdly, if our worldly love runs its course,
21:41sooner or later we will want to live with the object of our love,
21:46as man and wife,
21:48so that we can spend more time together,
21:52share our experiences and be there for each other
21:56when we go through the occasional rough patch.
22:02Jesus promised that not only will he reveal himself to us,
22:07verse 21,
22:09but that both he and the Father will come
22:12and move in with us in our hearts,
22:15verse 23.
22:18In other words,
22:20our hearts and minds will be so filled with the presence of God
22:24that we will find it easier
22:27and easier
22:28to live a God-centered,
22:31God-focused life.
22:35If we are married to the right person
22:37here on earth,
22:39we will find that life becomes more and more pleasurable
22:43and we relax more and more together
22:46as our love grows deeper and stronger,
22:50becoming more confident and secure in our mutual love.
22:56So is it with God.
23:00For the more time we spend with him,
23:02the more time we want to spend with him.
23:05The more we learn to love him and trust him,
23:08the more he rewards that love and trust.
23:11The more we realize that God is the only true
23:15and constant presence in our lives.
23:20For his love for us is eternal.
23:31Verse 28 is something that we should read
23:34time and time again
23:36when we find ourselves tossed around
23:39by the storms of life's tumultuous seas.
23:44Jesus reminds the disciples
23:47that he will leave them shortly
23:48but that he will come back.
23:53They did not really understand
23:55what he was meaning with these words
23:59that he would go away and come back again
24:02but all would become much clearer in due course.
24:08How often it may seem to us
24:11that we will be overwhelmed by the world around us.
24:15For we live in a world beset with problems.
24:19Family problems,
24:21financial problems,
24:23legal problems,
24:25environmental problems,
24:27The list could go on
24:29until tomorrow.
24:33We all know that Christ will come again
24:36but we need to be reminded constantly.
24:41He was trying to explain
24:43that when the time came for him to leave
24:45in obedience to the Father
24:48he would only be saying
24:49good night
24:50and not goodbye.
24:56We should also remember
24:57that in the scheme of things
24:59the world is not forever
25:00and our span here
25:02is less than the blink of the eye
25:05in heavenly terms.
25:09If we are obliged to suffer
25:11while we are here
25:12it is only for this tiny moment
25:15and then we shall see Christ
25:17revealed in all his glory
25:19and be with him
25:20for eternity.
25:26The disciples had to spend
25:2848 hours
25:29in fear of their lives
25:33between the arrest of Jesus
25:35and the first encounter
25:36with the risen Christ
25:39apart from Christ.
25:42uncertain
25:44confused
25:46before the amazing truth
25:48would be fully revealed to them
25:52on the sunlit rays
25:53of complete understanding
25:55started to burn through
25:57the mists of the early dawn.
26:01We do not have to face this weight
26:05for when we are presented
26:06with the truth
26:07it is presented
26:08in reverse order.
26:11the Christian message
26:12begins with the resurrection
26:15rather than with the miracle
26:17at the wedding in Cana.
26:22We can also take comfort
26:24in verse 30
26:27although Satan
26:28has his dominion
26:30here on earth
26:30and we can see
26:32the forces of darkness
26:33at work in the world
26:34every day
26:36we know
26:36that he has no power
26:38over Christ.
26:40Not only do we have
26:42his clear word on this
26:45but there is also
26:46the evidence
26:47of the resurrection
26:48and his ascension
26:50to back this claim up.
26:54We are also told
26:56by Jesus
26:56that he will make
26:58his residence
26:58in the hearts
26:59of those who love him.
27:02Verse 23 again
27:05And if he lives in us
27:07then Satan
27:08has no divine dominion
27:10over us either.
27:13Let us remember
27:15these wonderful words
27:17of comfort
27:19today.
27:20Amen.
27:24Let us pray
27:27Keep
27:28we beseech you
27:29O Lord
27:30your church
27:31with your perpetual mercy
27:34because the frailty
27:35of man without you
27:36cannot but fail.
27:39Keep us ever
27:40by your help
27:41from all things hurtful
