00:16the Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end amen our help is in
00:27the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth
00:41most merciful God we confess to you before the whole company of heaven and one
00:47another that we have sinned in thought word and deed I did what we have failed
00:55to do forgive us our sins heal us by your spirit and raise us to new life in Christ amen
01:09oh Lord make speed to save us oh Lord make haste to help us glory be to the Father and
01:21to the Son and
01:22to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end amen

01:40Psalm 78 pay attention my people to my instruction listen to the words I speak I will sing a song
01:51that imparts wisdom
01:52I will make insightful observations about the past what we have heard and learned that which our ancestors have told
02:02us we will not hide from their descendants we will tell the next generation about the Lord's praiseworthy acts about
02:10his strength and the amazing things he has done he has established a rule in Jacob he has set up
02:18a law in Israel
02:20he commanded our ancestors to make his deeds known to their descendants so that the next generation children yet to
02:29be born might know about them they will grow up and tell their descendants about them then they will place
02:38their confidence in God they will not forget the works of God and they will obey his commands then they
02:46will not be
02:47they will not be like their ancestors who are they will not obey their ancestors and they will not obey
02:52their ancestors a generation that was not committed and faithful to God
02:56the Ephraimites were armed with bows
02:58but they retreated in a day of battle
03:01they did not keep their covenant with God
03:04they refused to obey his law
03:07they forgot about what he had done
03:10the amazing things he had shown them
03:14he did amazing things in the sight of their ancestors
03:17in the land of Egypt in the region of Zoan
03:21he divided the sea and led them across it
03:24he made the waters stand in a heap
03:27he led them with a cloud by day
03:30and with the light of a fire all night long
03:33he broke open rocks in the wilderness
03:36and gave them enough water to fill the depths of the sea
03:41he caused streams to flow from the rock
03:44and made the waters flow like rivers
03:48yet they continued to sin against him
03:51and rebelled against the most high in the desert
03:55they willfully challenged God
03:57by asking for food to satisfy their appetite
04:01they insulted saying
04:03is God really able to give us food in the wilderness?
04:09yes, he struck a rock
04:11and water flowed out
04:13streams gushed forth
04:14but can he also give us food?
04:18will he provide meat for his people?
04:22when the Lord heard this he was furious
04:24a fire broke out against Jacob
04:27and his anger flared against Israel
04:29because they did not have faith in God
04:31and did not trust his ability to deliver them
04:35he gave a command to the clouds above
04:38and opened the doors in the sky
04:40he rained down manna for them to eat
04:42he gave them the grain of heaven
04:46man ate the food of the mighty ones
04:48he sent them more than enough to eat
04:52he brought the east wind through the sky
04:54and by his strength led forth the south wind
04:58he rained down meat on them like dust
05:01birds as numerous as the sand on all the seashores
05:06he caused them to fall
05:07right in the middle of their camp
05:09all around their homes
05:12they ate until they were beyond full
05:14he gave them what they desired
05:18they were not yet filled up
05:19their food still in their mouths
05:22when the anger of God flared up against them
05:24he killed some of the strongest of them
05:27he brought the young men of Israel to their knees
05:32despite all this
05:33they continued to sin
05:35and did not trust him to do amazing things
05:39so he caused them to die unsatisfied
05:41and filled with terror
05:44when he struck them down
05:46they sought his favour
05:47they turned back and longed for God
05:51they remembered that God was their protector
05:53and that God Most High was their deliverer
05:57but they deceived him with their words
06:00and lied to him
06:01they were not really committed to him
06:04and they were unfaithful to his covenant
06:08yet he is compassionate
06:10he forgives sin and does not destroy
06:14he often holds back his anger
06:16and does not stir up his fury
06:19he remembered that they were made of flesh
06:22and were like a wind that blows past
06:24and does not return
06:26how often they rebelled against him
06:29in the wilderness
06:29and insulted him in the wastelands
06:34they again challenged God
06:35and offended the Holy One of Israel
06:38they did not remember what he had done
06:41how he had delivered them from the enemy
06:43when he performed his awesome deeds in Egypt
06:46and his acts of judgment
06:48in the region of Zoan
06:50he turned their rivers into blood
06:52and they could not drink from their streams
06:55he sent swarms of biting insects against them
06:59as well as frogs that overran their land
07:03he gave their crops to the grasshopper
07:06the fruit of their labour to the locust
07:10he destroyed their vines with hail
07:12and their sycamore fig trees
07:14with driving rain
07:16he ran downhill upon their cattle
07:19and hurled lightning bolts down
07:21on their livestock
07:24his raging anger lashed out against them
07:28he sent fury, rage and trouble
07:30as messengers who bring disaster
07:34he sent his anger in full force
07:36he did not spare them from death
07:39he handed their lives over to destruction
07:43he struck down all the firstborn in Egypt
07:47the first fruits of their reproductive power
07:49in the tents of Ham
07:51and yet he brought out his people like sheep
07:55he led them through the wilderness like a flock
07:58he guided them safely along
08:00and they were not afraid
08:02but the sea covered their enemies
08:05he brought them to the border of his holy land
08:08to the mightiest land which his right hand acquired
08:14he drove the nations out from before them
08:16he assigned them their tribal allotments
08:19and allowed the tribes of Israel to settle down
08:23yet they challenged and defied God Most High
08:26and did not obey his commands
08:30they were unfaithful and acted as treacherously as their ancestors
08:34they were as unreliable as a malfunctioning bow
08:39they made him angry with their pagan shrines
08:43and made him jealous with their idols
08:47God heard and was angry
08:49he completely rejected Israel
08:52he abandoned the sanctuary at Shiloh
08:55the tent where he lived amongst men
08:58he allowed the symbol of his strong presence to be captured
09:02he gave the symbol of his splendor into the hand of the enemy
09:08he delivered his people over to the sword
09:10and was angry with his chosen nation
09:14fire consumed their young men
09:16and their virgins remained unmarried
09:19their priests fell by the sword
09:22but their widows did not weep
09:25but then the Lord awoke from his sleep
09:28he was like a warrior in a drunken rage
09:31he drove his enemies back
09:33he made them a permanent target for insults
09:37he rejected the tent of Joseph
09:39he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim
09:42he chose the tribe of Judah and Mount Zion
09:46which he loves
09:48he made his sanctuary as enduring as the heavens above
09:51as secure as the earth
09:53which he established permanently
09:57he chose David his servant
09:59and took him from the sheepfolds
10:01he took him away from following the mother sheep
10:04and made him the shepherd of Jacob his people
10:07and of Israel his chosen nation
10:11David cared for them with pure motives
10:14he led them with skill
10:18glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
10:21as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be
10:25world without end
10:27Amen
10:34Jesus said
10:36come to me all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens
10:40and I will give you rest
10:48take my yoke upon you
10:50and learn from me
10:51for I am gentle and humble of heart
10:55and you will find rest for your souls
10:58for my yoke is easy
11:00and my burden light
11:05look down O God
11:06from your heavenly throne
11:09illuminate the darkness of this night
11:11with your celestial brightness
11:14and from the children of light
11:16banish the deeds of darkness
11:19through Jesus Christ our Saviour
11:22Amen
11:28Now according to your word Sovereign Lord
11:32permit your servant to depart in peace
11:35for my eyes have seen your salvation
11:38that you have prepared
11:40in the presence of all peoples
11:42a light for the revelation to the Gentiles
11:47and for glory to your people Israel
11:51glory be to the Father
11:53and to the Son
11:54and to the Holy Spirit
11:55as it was in the beginning
11:58is now and ever shall be
12:00world without end
12:02Amen
12:07Lighten our darkness Lord we pray
12:09and in your great mercy
12:12defend us from all perils and dangers
12:15of this night
12:16for the love of your only Son
12:18our Saviour
12:19Jesus Christ
12:22Amen
12:26Our Father who art in heaven
12:28hallowed be thy name
12:30thy kingdom come
12:32thy will be done
12:34on earth as it is in heaven
12:37give us this day
12:39our daily bread
12:41and forgive us our trespasses
12:43as we forgive those who trespass against us
12:48lead us not into temptation
12:51but deliver us from evil
12:54for thine is the kingdom
12:56the power and the glory
12:58for ever and ever
13:00Amen
13:05in peace will we lie down and sleep
13:09for you alone Lord make us dwell in safety
13:16abide with us Lord Jesus
13:18for the night is at hand
13:20and the day is now past
13:25as the night watch looks for the morning
13:28so do we look for you O Christ
13:35come with the dawning of the day
13:37and make yourself known in the breaking of the bread
13:45may the Lord bless us and watch over us
13:48the Lord make his face shine upon us
13:51and be gracious to us
13:55the Lord look kindly on us
13:58and give us peace
