00:17:01When Jesus slipped out of the supper room on his terrible mission, a weight seemed to be lifted from the
00:17:09spirit of Jesus.
00:17:11The words which fell from him, however, indicated that he not only felt the relief of being rid of a
00:17:18disturbing element in their small band,
00:17:21but that he recognised that a crisis in his own career had been reached and successfully breached.
00:17:30Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.
00:17:36In sending Judas on his way, he had in fact delivered himself to death.
00:17:42He had taken the step which cannot be withdrawn, and he is conscious of taking it in fulfil of his
00:17:50father's will.
00:17:54The conflict in his own mind is revealed only by the decision of the victory.
00:17:59No man, in soundness of body and mind, can voluntarily give himself to die without seeing clearly other possibilities,
00:18:08and without feeling it to be a hard and painful thing to relinquish his life.
00:18:17Jesus had made up his mind.
00:18:20His death is the beginning of his glorification.
00:18:23In choosing the cross, he chooses the crown.
00:18:28The Son of Man is glorified in his perfect self-sacrifice that wins all men to him.
00:18:36God is glorified in him because this sacrifice is a tribute at once to the justice and the love of
00:18:44God.
00:18:45The cross reveals God as nothing else does.
00:18:50Not only does this decision glorify the Son of Man and God through him and in him,
00:18:57but as a direct consequence, God will glorify the Son of Man in himself.
00:19:03He will lift him to participation in divine glory.
00:19:10It was well that the disciples should know that this would straight away result from all that their Master was
00:19:18now about to pass through.
00:19:20That the perfect sympathy with the Father's will which he was showing now would be rewarded by the permanent participation
00:19:28in the authority of God.
00:19:32It must be through such a one as their Lord, who is absolutely at one with God, that God fulfills
00:19:40his purpose for man.
00:19:42By this life and death of perfect obedience, the absolute devotedness to God and man,
00:19:50Christ necessarily won dominion over human hearts and exercises a determining influence on all that is to be.
00:20:00In all that Christ did upon earth, God was glorified, his holiness, his fatherly love were shown to all men.
00:20:11In all that God now does upon earth, Christ is glorified.
00:20:17The uniqueness and the power of his life will become increasingly manifest, the supremacy of his spirit more and more
00:20:26apparent.
00:20:29This glorification was not the far-off result of the impending sacrifice.
00:20:36It would begin from the present hour and begin in the sacrifice.
00:20:41God will glorify him straight away.
00:20:45Yet a little while was he to be with his disciples.
00:20:50Therefore, he tenderly addresses them, recognising their incompetence, their inability to stand alone by calling them little children.
00:21:01And in the view of the exhibition of bad feeling, even of treachery, which the twelve had at that very
00:21:08hour given,
00:21:09his command to love one another, comes with a tenfold significance.
00:21:16I am leaving you, he says.
00:21:18Put away then all heart-burnings and jealousies.
00:21:23Cling together.
00:21:25Do not let quarrels or envy divide you.
00:21:30This was to be their safeguard when he left them and went where they could not follow.
00:21:36A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also
00:21:44love one another.
00:21:46By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have loved one or another.
00:21:56The commandment to love our neighbour as ourselves was no new commandment.
00:22:01But to love as I have loved you was so new that its practice was enough to identify a man
00:22:08as a disciple of Christ.
00:22:11The manner and the measure of that love that is possible and commanded could not even be understood
00:22:17until Christ's love would be revealed.
00:22:22But probably what Jesus had even more directly in view of the love that was to bind his followers together
00:22:30and make them one solid body.
00:22:33It was their mutual attachment to that very existence of the Christian church which depended upon
00:22:41are this love of men to one another springing out of the love of Christ for this small band
00:22:47and because of their acknowledgement and love of a common Lord
00:22:52a new thing would be born in the world.
00:22:57The bond to Christ proved stronger than all other ties.
00:23:02Those who cherished common love to him were drawn to one another more deeply than even blood relations.
00:23:10In fact, Christ, by his love for men, has created a new bond
00:23:14and that the strongest by which men can be bound to one another.
00:23:20As the Christian church is a new institution on earth,
00:23:24so is the principle which formed it a new principle.
00:23:28The principle has indeed too often been hidden from sight,
00:23:33if not smothered, by the institution.
00:23:36Too little has love been regarded as the one thing by which the disciples of Christ be recognised,
00:23:43the one true note of the true church.
00:23:47But that this form of love was a new thing upon earth is apparent.
00:23:52Tenderly, as Jesus announced his impending departure,
00:23:57it filled the minds of the disciples with consternation.
00:24:01Even the buoyant and hardy Peter felt, for the moment, staggered by the news,
00:24:08and still more by the announcement that he was not able to accompany his Lord.
00:24:15He was assured that one day he would follow,
00:24:19but at this present point this was impossible.
00:24:23This, Peter considered a reflection on his courage and fidelity.
00:24:28And although his headlong self-confidence had only a few moments before been so severely rebuked,
00:24:34he exclaims,
00:24:36Lord, why can't I follow you now?
00:24:38I will lay down my life for your sake.
00:24:41This was without doubt the true expression of Peter's present feeling.
00:24:46And he was allowed in the end to give proof that these vehement words were not mere bluster.
00:24:53But, as yet, he had not completely understood the separateness of the Lord and the uniqueness of his work.
00:25:02He did not know precisely what Jesus was referring to,
00:25:06but thought a strong arm would not be out of place in any conflict that might come.
00:25:12The offers, which even true fidelity make,
00:25:16are often only additional hindrances to our Lord's purpose,
00:25:20an additional burden for him to bear.
00:25:23On him alone must he depend.
00:25:27No man can advise him,
00:25:30and none can aid him,
00:25:33except by first receiving from him his own spirit.
00:25:40And so the rebuked Peter fell into unaccustomed silence,
00:25:45and he takes no further part in our conversation.
00:25:50The others, knowing that Peter had infinitely more courage than the rest of them put together,
00:25:56fear that if he is in this way to fall,
00:26:00it is beyond hope for themselves.
00:26:03They feel that if they are left without Jesus,
00:26:06they have no strength to make any headway against the rulers,
00:26:09no skill in argument,
00:26:11such as made Jesus victorious when assailed by the scribes,
00:26:16no popular eloquence which would help them to win the people.
00:26:22Even more helpless men could not well be.
00:26:27Sheep without a shepherd was not too strong an expression
00:26:32to depict their weakness and want of influence,
00:26:36their incompetence to affect anything,
00:26:39their inability even to stay together.
00:26:43Christ was their bond of union
00:26:45and the strength of each of them.
00:26:49It was to be with him
00:26:51that they had all left their lifelong possessions,
00:26:55their families and their businesses.
00:26:58In forsaking all,
00:26:59father, mother, wife, children, home, kindred, vocations,
00:27:04they had found in Christ
00:27:06that hundredfold more,
00:27:08even in this life,
00:27:10which he had promised to them.
00:27:14He had so won their hearts.
00:27:16There was something about him
00:27:18so fascinating
00:27:19that they felt no loss
00:27:21when they enjoyed his presence,
00:27:23feared no danger
00:27:24in which he was their leader.
00:27:28They had perhaps not thought very clearly
00:27:31about their future.
00:27:33They felt so confident in Jesus
00:27:35that they were content
00:27:36to let him bring his kingdom as he pleased.
00:27:40They were so charmed by the novelty of their life
00:27:44as his disciples,
00:27:45with the great ideas that dropped from his lips,
00:27:48with the wonderful works he did,
00:27:50with the new light he shed upon all their personages
00:27:53and the institutions of the world.
00:27:55They were satisfied to leave their hope undefined.
00:28:02But all this satisfaction
00:28:04and that secret assurance of hope
00:28:07depended on being with Christ.
00:28:11As yet,
00:28:12he had not given to them anything
00:28:14which would enable them to make a mark on the world.
00:28:17They were still ignorant,
00:28:19so that any competent lawyer
00:28:21would be able to entangle and confuse them.
00:28:24They had not received from Christ
00:28:27any influential position in society
00:28:30from which they could sway men.
00:28:33There were no great visible institutions
00:28:36with which they could identify themselves
00:28:39and so become conspicuous.
00:28:44It was then with dismay
00:28:47that they heard that he was going
00:28:49where they could not go with him.
00:28:52A cloud of gloomy foreboding
00:28:54began to gather around them
00:28:56as they lay around the table,
00:28:58fixing their eyes on him
00:29:00as one whose words
00:29:02they would interpret differently
00:29:05if they could.
00:29:09Their anxious looks
00:29:10were not disregarded.
00:29:13Do not let your hearts be troubled,
00:29:15our Lord said.
00:29:16Believe in God
00:29:17and believe in me too.

00:29:20Do not give way
00:29:21to disturbing thoughts.

00:29:35he guides and rules
00:29:37and working his own good ends
00:29:40through all present evil.
00:29:44Trust him
00:29:45even when you cannot penetrate
00:29:47the darkness horrendous.
00:29:50It is his part
00:29:53to bring you successfully
00:29:55through into the light.
00:29:57It is your part
00:29:58to follow where he leads.

00:30:02debate or vex your soul,
00:30:04but leave it with God.

00:31:05leaves his home
00:31:06and his occupation.
00:31:09But with very
00:31:09different feelings
00:31:10follows the one
00:31:12who has come to see
00:31:13that the greater good
00:31:14of the family
00:31:14requires that he go.
00:31:17Who has carefully
00:31:18ascertained where
00:31:19and how
00:31:19he can best serve
00:31:21the ones he leaves
00:31:22behind.
00:31:23To such an absence
00:31:25of parents
00:31:25can be reconciled.
00:31:28The passing
00:31:29may be bitter,
00:31:30but the greater good
00:31:31to be gained by it
00:31:32enables them
00:31:33to approve
00:31:33its reasonableness
00:31:35and to submit
00:31:36to it.
00:31:38What our Lord
00:31:39says to his disciples
00:31:40is basically this.
00:31:42I have not
00:31:43wearied of earth
00:31:44or tired
00:31:45of your company.
00:31:46Neither do I go
00:31:47because I must.
00:31:49For I could easily
00:31:50escape Judas
00:31:51and the Jews.
00:31:53But I have a purpose
00:31:54that requires
00:31:56me to go.
00:31:58You have not
00:31:59found me impulsive.
00:32:01Neither now
00:32:01do I act
00:32:02without good reason.
00:32:05Could I be
00:32:06of more use
00:32:06to you by staying?
00:32:08If so,
00:32:09I would stay.
00:32:12This is a new
00:32:13kind of assertion
00:32:14to be made
00:32:15by human lips.
00:32:17I am going
00:32:17into the other world
00:32:18for a purpose.
00:32:21often the sense
00:32:22of duty
00:32:23has been so strong
00:32:24in men
00:32:24that they have
00:32:25left this world
00:32:26without a murmur.
00:32:28But none
00:32:29has felt so clear
00:32:30about what lies
00:32:31beyond
00:32:32or has been
00:32:33so confident
00:32:34of his own
00:32:35power
00:32:36to effect any
00:32:36change for the
00:32:37better
00:32:37in the other
00:32:39world
00:32:39that he leaves
00:32:41this for a sphere
00:32:42of greater usefulness.
00:32:44This is what
00:32:46Christ speaks.
00:32:49But he also
00:32:50explains
00:32:51what this
00:32:52purpose is.
00:32:54In my
00:32:54Father's house
00:32:55and many
00:32:55mansions
00:32:56I go
00:32:57to prepare
00:32:58a place
00:32:59for you.
00:33:01The Father's
00:33:02house was a
00:33:03new image
00:33:03of heaven.
00:33:05The idea
00:33:06of God's house
00:33:06however was
00:33:07familiar to the
00:33:08Jews
00:33:09but in the
00:33:10temple the
00:33:10freedom and
00:33:11familiarity
00:33:12which we
00:33:12associate with
00:33:13home
00:33:13were absent.
00:33:17It was only
00:33:18when one came
00:33:18who felt
00:33:19his real
00:33:20home was
00:33:20in God
00:33:21that the
00:33:22temple could
00:33:23be called
00:33:23the Father's
00:33:25house.
00:33:26And yet
00:33:27there is
00:33:27nothing that
00:33:28the heart
00:33:28of man
00:33:29more
00:33:30importunately
00:33:30craves
00:33:31than the
00:33:32freedom and
00:33:33ease which
00:33:34this name
00:33:34implies.
00:33:36To live
00:33:37unafraid of
00:33:37God
00:33:38not shrinking
00:33:39from him
00:33:40but so
00:33:40truly at
00:33:41one with
00:33:42him that
00:33:42we live
00:33:42as one
00:33:43household
00:33:44brightened
00:33:45and warmed
00:33:46by his
00:33:47presence.
00:33:48This is
00:33:49the thirst
00:33:49for God
00:33:50which is
00:33:51one they
00:33:51felt in
00:33:52every heart.
00:33:54On his
00:33:54part
00:33:54God has
00:33:55many
00:33:56mansions
00:33:56proclaiming
00:33:57that he
00:33:58desires to
00:33:58have us
00:33:59at home
00:33:59with him.
00:34:01He wishes
00:34:02us to
00:34:02know and
00:34:03trust him
00:34:03not to
00:34:05change our
00:34:05faces when
00:34:06we meet
00:34:07him at
00:34:07a corner
