10:50A reading from the Gospel according to St John, Chapter 12
10:57Now there were some Greeks among the people who had come up to give worship at the feast.
11:03They came to Philip, who was of Bethsaida in Galilee, and made a request, saying,
11:08Sir, we have a desire to see Jesus.
11:14Philip went and told Andrew, and Andrew went with Philip to Jesus.
11:20Jesus said to them in answer,
11:23The hour of the glory of the Son of Man has come.
11:27Truly I say to you, if a seed of grain does not go into the earth and come to an
11:31end,
11:32it will remain a seed and no more.
11:35For through its death it gives much fruit.
11:38He who is in love with his life will have it taken from him.
11:43He who has no care for his life in this world will keep it forever and ever.
11:50If any man is my servant, let him come after me.
11:54Where I am, there will my servant be.
11:58If any man becomes my servant, my Father will give him honour.
12:03Now is my soul troubled, and what am I to say?
12:06Father, keep me from this hour?
12:09No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour.
12:13Father, give glory to your name.
12:18And there came a voice out of heaven saying,
12:21I have given it glory, and I will give it glory again.
12:27Hearing the sand, a number of people who were there said that it was thunder.
12:32Others said, an angel was talking to him.
12:37Jesus said in answer,
12:39This voice came not for me, but for you.
12:42Now is this world to be judged.
12:44Now will the ruler of this world be sent out.
12:48I, if I am lifted up from the earth,
12:51will make all men come to me.
12:54This, he said, pointing to the sort of death that he would have.
13:01Then the people said in answer to him,
13:05The law says that Christ will have life without end.
13:10How do you then say that it is necessary for the Son of Man to be lifted up?
13:14Who is this Son of Man?
13:18Jesus said to them,
13:20For a little time longer the light will be among you.
13:24While you have the light, go on walking in it,
13:26so that the dark may not ever take you.
13:29For the one walking in the dark has no knowledge of where he is going.
13:36Insofar as you have the light, put your faith in the light,
13:39so that you may become sons of light.
13:43With these words, Jesus went away and for a time was not seen again by them.
13:49But though he had done such a number of signs before them,
13:52they still had no belief in him.
13:55So that the words of the prophets, Isaiah, might come true when he said,
14:01Lord, who has any belief in our preaching?
14:04Of the arm of the Lord, to whom has it been unveiled?
14:10For this reason they were unable to have belief,
14:13because Isaiah said again,
14:15He has made their eyes blind and their hearts hard,
14:19for fear that they might see with their eyes,
14:21and get knowledge with their hearts, and be changed,
14:25and I might make them well.
14:29Isaiah said these words, because he saw his glory.
14:33And his words were about him.
14:38Even so, a number of the rulers did have belief in him.
14:42But because of the Pharisees, they did not say so openly,
14:45for fear that they might be shut out of the synagogue.
14:49For the praise of men was dearer to them than the approval of God.
14:56Then Jesus cried out with an alert voice,
14:59He who has faith in me has faith not in me, but in the one who sent me.
15:06He who sees me sees him who sent me.
15:10I have come as a light into the world,
15:12so that no one who has faith in me will go on living in the dark.
15:18If any man listens to my words and does not keep them,
15:21I am not his judge.
15:23I did not come to be judge of the world,
15:25but to give salvation to the world.
15:29He who puts me on one side and does not take my words to heart,
15:33is not without a judge.
15:36The word which I have said will be his judge on the last day.
15:41For I have not said it on my authority,
15:43but the Father who sent me gave me orders as to what to say and how to say it.
15:50I have knowledge that his order is eternal life,
15:53so that the things which I say,
15:55I say them even as the Father says them to me.
16:01This is the word of the Lord.
16:03Thanks be to God.
16:09This passage is so highly charged with images,
16:13it is quite hard to know where to begin.
16:18Jesus explained that it is necessary for a seed to be buried in the ground,
16:23to start the process of rotting,
16:25in order that it can then germinate
16:27and create an entire new plant.
16:31In one way, of course, he spoke of himself.
16:34If he was not going to be put to death and be buried,
16:37then there could be no resurrection,
16:39no new life,
16:40no eternal life in reconciliation with God.
16:44In another way,
16:46he spoke of you and I,
16:48that if we do not put our worldly lives to death,
16:51we cannot aspire to a heavenly life with him.
16:58Jesus went on to explain the latter point,
17:01by saying that if we want to serve him,
17:03we must follow him.
17:05What does this mean?
17:07How can we follow Jesus?
17:11If we want to follow Christ,
17:13we must study him by reading our Bibles,
17:16meditating and praying.
17:18Then we will gain an insight of his ways,
17:21his wishes and his demands upon us.
17:25Every day we must strive diligently
17:28to become increasingly like him,
17:31to imitate him in all things.
17:35Through prayer,
17:36we can discover his will for us,
17:39that we can go and do as we are asked.
17:43From our Bibles,
17:44we can learn how he reacted to events in his life,
17:47the things he taught us,
17:49and to apply them to our own lives.
17:52Like the seed he spoke of,
17:54we have to discover how to bury the old life,
17:58so that we can begin the new.
18:03And with this requirement for obedience and service,
18:06comes a wonderful promise.
18:09Those who serve Jesus,
18:11will be honoured by the Father.
18:13Those of us who are still of this world,
18:16who still inhabit earthly bodies,
18:18and have earthly thoughts,
18:20will set importance on how other people think of us,
18:23how it is important to have respect in our community,
18:27and to have status.
18:30However, those of us who have wholly grasped what Jesus taught,
18:34will realise there is only one person's love and admiration that is important,
18:39that of God himself.
18:42Only God is true to his words in all things,
18:45constant and faithful.
18:47Only God can always be there for us,
18:50and is waiting to bring us home to him for eternity.
18:57Jesus came to live on earth as a light in the darkness,
19:01that those who believe in him,
19:02may not continue living in darkness,
19:05but see the light,
19:06and believe in him,
19:07finding redemption and eternal life.
19:11A light does many things for us.
19:13Not least,
19:14we need a light to find our way in life.
19:18Imagine having to go on a journey in a place where it was totally dark.
19:22I can guarantee that within a few moments,
19:25we would become completely disoriented and lost.
19:31Think of the times when there has been a power cut in the night,
19:34and there has not even been the glow of a street light,
19:37to help you find the candle.
19:39What did you walk into or trip over while you were searching?
19:45Light is good for the soul.
19:48There is something mysterious about the effect of light on the human psyche.
19:53Some of us, indeed,
19:54are unfortunate enough to suffer from what is dull,
19:57seasonally acquired depression,
20:00which is caused by the lower levels of sunlight during the winter months.
20:06There is something of the enemy in darkness.
20:10But light drives out darkness,
20:12for the two cannot live in the same place.
20:16From the moment the sun first breaks over the horizon at dawn,
20:21darkness is in retreat.
20:25We have Christ as our light.
20:27He came to show us the way,
20:29to guide our footsteps,
20:31and to help us find our way home to the places he prepared for us.
20:36He did not come to judge us,
20:38but to help us overcome judgment through our enlightenment.
20:44Judgment will come later,
20:45and awaits all those who ignored or refused the light
20:49when it was available to them.
20:52As Jesus said,
20:54the ones who refuse his word,
20:56refuse the one who sent it.
21:03Let us pray.
21:07Almighty and everlasting God,
21:11give unto us an increase of faith,
21:13hope and charity,
21:15that we might obtain that which you promise,
21:19and make us love that which you command.
21:22Through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
21:25Amen.
21:31May the Lord bless us and keep us from all evil,
21:36bringing us to everlasting life.
21:39Amen.
