00:00Ah yes, Tuesday shine time. College football is here. So who's going to play for Lane Kiffin on Saturday? It's
00:07four days from game day and nobody knows. Ben Bolch of the California Post is going to join me to
00:12talk about the chaos at UCLA, the empty stands at USC and so much more. I'm going to give you
00:18my shine nine locks to make the college football playoff. Is Indiana going to be back? I'm pissed off at
00:23a certain Red Sox radio guy and so are the Yankees. We're going to get into that. Plus, eating
00:29popcorn with a fork, San Francisco treats. Am I being punked? Shine time starts right now.
00:44I met with our leadership committee of our players and I asked them, what's your team? What do you want
00:51to do? If these players are allowed to be added to rosters, what do you want to do? And every
00:58one of them
00:59is emphatic about they can help us win Brigham. These players on all of our rosters, not just ours, have
01:07been working for nine months for this moment on Saturday, which then will lead into the next five to six
01:13months. The fact that somebody out there is going to take a player off of an NFL roster and tell
01:19somebody who's been doing it for nine months, go kick rocks, that doesn't sit well with me. I think that's
01:24wrong.
01:25That morally is wrong. So I think our presidents, ADs and chancellors got it right and we'll support it and
01:32we'll fall in line.
01:34We're just over 48 hours away from college football week one kicking off. Already had a handful of games last
01:40weekend with week zero. The debates and the legal battles over NFL players returning to college rosters rages on. You
01:48heard Lane Kiffin defend his action.
01:50Say he ran it by his team's leadership committee and they're on board. Meanwhile, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian says
01:58it would be morally wrong to replace a player who has been working towards the season with a guy off
02:04an NFL roster.
02:06Commissioner Greg Sankey and the SEC have vowed to defend their rights to disallow the return of NFL players against
02:12a Louisiana court order that says otherwise in a hearing set for Thursday.
02:17So what the hell is going on here? And who are we going to see on the field this week?
02:22And that to me is the issue. It's game week. It's LSU Clemson coming up this weekend. You can make
02:32the case that is the signature game for college football in week number one.
02:37Instead, we're talking about players going from pros to college.
02:45Reporters in Indy just interviewed the general manager for the Colts, Chris Ballard, who said of this latest trend of
02:53players going from pros to college, this is the dumbest bleep I've ever heard in my life.
02:58And he's right. And this is such a distraction.
03:01Oh, we're going to make our picks for the playoffs and tell you who we like for the Heisman coming
03:06up later in the show because I want to talk ball because college football is here.
03:12But my goodness, why are we still doing this? Why is this still a thing?
03:19I mean, right now, it's not about who's going to win the SEC.
03:22It's who's going to actually play for these teams, which is a joke.
03:28And by the way, I'm all in on Steve Sarkeesian and his announcement that they're not even going to entertain
03:34it.
03:34You shouldn't go if you are at the end of the day, Daquan Wright, from playing with somebody like Deshaun
03:44Watson, who used to play at Clemson,
03:45to this week playing against Clemson like that. That doesn't even translate to me.
03:52How is that even possible? I'm sick and tired of following my great friend, one of my best friends from
03:58college, Pete Thamel from ESPN.
04:01I love Pete. But I feel like his Twitter feed and his breaking news bulletins,
04:06that determines everything here in terms of how to shape conversation for college football.
04:13I mean, this is a joke. And Kiffin saying he talked to his leadership committee and they wanted to do
04:20it.
04:20Come on, get the hell out of here. Sarke is right. It's morally wrong.
04:24It's also it just has a terrible feel to it where you have a guy.
04:30Imagine being the backup tight end as we speak for LSU. You've worked your ass off all offseason.
04:38And then Lane Kiffin is going to bring in one of his former Ole Miss players who couldn't make it
04:41in the pros with Philadelphia or Cleveland.
04:44And he's going to bring him in to be the backup tight end, the starting tight end.
04:48I mean, Daquan Wright was second team all SEC at the tight end position.
04:54It's just sad. It's just wrong. And Lane doesn't have to do this.
04:58LSU should be good enough, great enough with his coaching, with his choice at Sam Levin at the quarterback position
05:03to make the playoffs this year.
05:06And I listen, I don't at the end of the day, I don't have any kind of belief that Lane
05:12will ever do the right thing.
05:13But what are we doing here? Right. Sarke nailed it. And you're going to defy Greg Sankey.
05:18You're going to defy the SEC. You're going to go against the conference.
05:22And Lane's saying, well, if he doesn't do it, someone else in the conference will know because of the penalties
05:28that are in place.
05:29So now we're all waiting for a bated breath. It's not about kickoff coming up on Thursday.
05:35It's about a court ruling in Louisiana on Thursday. I've had enough.
05:39I mean, it's just curbs the enthusiasm, mars the interest on what should be an unbelievable college football season where
05:46you can have a plethora of teams that can ultimately make the college football playoffs and compete for a championship,
05:54including LSU.
05:58Awful. Absolutely awful. The fact that this is still a thing, the fact that we're just days away from the
06:03start of the season and it's unresolved,
06:05the fact that we can't even break down Clemson's defense going up against LSU's offense because that's not even the
06:12main topic going into Labor Day weekend in college football.
06:16Sad. Embarrassing. Pathetic. Also state of affairs for college football and for Lane Kiffin.
06:25The Big Ten has also taken its stand against the return of NFL players,
06:28although the league at this point does not seem to be embroiled in the legal battles facing the SEC.
06:34My guest today is California Post senior college sports writer Ben Bulch.
06:39Ben, welcome to Shine Time, my friend.
06:42Thank you so much for having me on.
06:43Listen, you are fantastic. Love reading it. Love following you.
06:47And look, before we get into UCLA and USC, and there's a lot there, I want to get into these
06:54NFL players jumping to the collegiate ranks.
06:57To your knowledge, any players that are attempting to do that in the Big Ten?
07:03Well, I know there were a couple in Indiana.
07:05I haven't, I mean, to be honest with you, I'm so laser focused on SC and UCLA.
07:09I haven't monitored the landscape probably as closely as I have been.
07:13I know there were a couple trying to do so at Indiana.
07:15I'm not sure of their status, but it's just crazy.
07:18I mean, you know, I was out at UCLA when Trent Hendrick joined the Bruins from, you know, having been
07:24in an NFL minicamp.
07:25And a lot of people thought, you know, as everybody did, once you brush up with the NFL, that's it
07:30for your college eligibility.
07:31Then comes the court lawsuit and the ruling, and now it's the Wild West again, and people are jumping back
07:37into the fray.
07:39For UCLA's case, it was, you know, he didn't sign.
07:43He wasn't on the roster and obviously didn't play in a game.
07:47So that cleared him from the UCLA perspective.
07:49But, you know, this is just starting.
07:51This is going to be something that's going to be on a team-by-team almost, it seems, league-by
07:56-league basis.
07:57So it's still a mess.
07:59So you broke a monster story yesterday in the world of sports, college sports, L.A. sports.
08:07I mean, how about it?
08:08UCLA fired its athletic director.
08:11Take us through what the hell happened and everything that you know about this situation.
08:16Yeah, the timing of it was what surprised me because Martin Drummond's been under fire for a long time at
08:22UCLA.
08:23Going back to, you know, last year with Deshaun Foster starting 0-3, they had to pull the plug on
08:28him.
08:29That was, in my view, that was the time to make the move.
08:32And at the time, Chancellor Julio Frank said he fully supported Martin Drummond.
08:37You know, in retrospect, it's fair to, I think, question that because, you know, in recent weeks, they have done
08:43kind of a wholesale evaluation of the athletic department,
08:47bringing in Tim Harris, the former long-time Lakers business executive who did a lot of great things with one
08:52of the most iconic brands in all of sports with the Lakers.
08:56You know, retired from that job recently and now has come back to his alma mater.
09:01He actually played soccer for the Bruins.
09:03He was a goalkeeper, really sharp business mind, and just the guy that UCLA might need to lead them into
09:10this kind of rapidly changing landscape of college sports.
09:13You know, he brought it, he got brought in, he was doing some analysis, particularly on the financial side.
09:18And then, you know, yesterday, the news came out that we broke that Tim is going to take over, at
09:23least on an interim basis.
09:24You know, maybe he'll really fall in love with the place again and want to stay longer.
09:29But right now, you know, I think he's going to do a top-to-bottom assessment of what needs to
09:34be done, if he hasn't already.
09:35And, you know, perfectly capable of hitting ground running and doing an overhaul that's needed in this athletic department, quite
09:42frankly.
09:43Yeah, without question.
09:43And you did a phenomenal job breaking the story.
09:46So, you know, it's interesting on Tim Harris.
09:49To me, he would have been everything that I would be looking for in the next athletic director at UCLA.
09:55And this is a big position, obviously, right?
09:58I mean, we're talking about one of the most storied athletic departments in all of college sports.
10:04What are you hearing on what's next for UCLA?
10:09Well, as Bob Chesney says, they're one good football team away from being the best athletic department in the country.
10:15And I think that is absolutely true.
10:16I think it's a great statement.
10:18But they got to get the fan base reengaged.
10:21I mean, we've seen historic lows these last, you know, five-plus years under Chip Kelly and Deshaun Foster.
10:26They got to get people excited about UCLA sports again.
10:30You know, attendance is way down at both Pauley Pavilion and the Rose Bowl.
10:34Got to get some more high-level players in there.
10:36I'm very optimistic for this team, this football team this year.
10:39I'm picking them, you know, to go in the 9-4 range and be very competitive in year one in
10:44Bob Chesney.
10:45And, you know, when you combine a galvanizing presence like him with a chancellor who's obviously very hands-on in
10:51the athletics
10:51and now the business acumen of Tim Harris, I think that's a winning combination
10:56and a great place for UCLA to build from.
10:59Nine wins.
11:00I love it.
11:01And I love the hire of Bob Chesney.
11:04I thought that was inspiring.
11:06And I mean it in a positive way.
11:08Not necessarily in terms of the big name and what UCLA has done in the past,
11:12but the right guy at the right time.
11:15Why are you so high here on this hire?
11:18Yeah, you got to go for a home run swing.
11:19I mean, we're just so used to, you know, alums, retreads, kind of the guys they can afford at UCLA.
11:25And this was, for their way of operating, this was an out-of-the-box hire.
11:30I mean, you know, Bob Myers, the former Warriors GM, Adam Peters, the Commander's GM.
11:35I mean, they had some really heavy hitters who were also UCLA alums on this search committee.
11:40And in my view, I thought they did hit a home run and get the hire of the coaching carousel.
11:44I think Coach Chesney's everything he's advertised to be.
11:47I think he's got a winning formula that's translated at every level.
11:50And I think it will in the Big Ten as well.
11:52And, you know, by the way, I need to say this.
11:54I did pick UCLA to win the rivalry game this year and knock the Trojans out of the CFP.
12:01So we'll see how that goes.
12:03Wow.
12:04All right.
12:04That's a perfect segue into talking some USC football.
12:09And look, they won their opener Saturday against San Jose State.
12:12We'll get the specifics on the field for this team in a second.
12:16But the school had to issue a statement in response to the poor attendance at the Coliseum.
12:20I mean, I didn't necessarily like the statement in any way, shape, or form.
12:24I mean, I don't know what the hell this was and who wrote it.
12:27You know, I'm never going to rip the L.A. sports fan.
12:29I think the L.A. sports fan is terrific.
12:31I also, me personally, would not sit in 104 degrees, and especially in the Coliseum,
12:37the way that thing is structured.
12:39Your read in the California Post yesterday was fantastic.
12:44What is the solution here?
12:46Well, as I wrote, one possible solution is to look at what's being done over at Arizona
12:51and Arizona State.
12:52They understand that these early season games against cream puffs, you should not be kicking
12:58off before 5, 6 p.m. in the day, and they don't.
13:04And in fact, you know, when they were part of the Pac-12, they kind of had a gentleman's
13:07agreement with the athletic directors, conference officials, and the TV partners to do that.
13:12And, you know, as I've written, they don't kick off.
13:15They have no noon kickoffs.
13:16They have no 2 p.m. kickoffs, 4 p.m. in September.
13:19They do it right, so, you know, obviously, USC and UCLA have a new TV contract.
13:24They're part of the Big Ten.
13:25We all know TV runs sports, so at this point, they would have to just kind of ask nicely
13:30and hope for the best, but going forward, that new TV deal will be up in 2030.
13:35You know, maybe they could get some stipulations in there, no kickoffs at least before 5 o'clock.
13:39I mean, come on.
13:40It's just ridiculous out here this time of year, and we saw the Rose Bowl a few years ago.
13:44They only had 20-something thousand fans announced.
13:47It probably was actually closer to 10,000 to 15,000.
13:51It was unlike anything I'd ever seen.
13:52So something needs to happen, and, you know, they need to get a hold of this
13:56because we're going to just keep seeing the same thing over and over.
13:58And honestly, I was surprised there was such a hubbub about this
14:01because I knew it was coming, and it was totally predictable.
14:05Yeah, we saw it the same way.
14:07I mean, I couldn't believe that people were surprised
14:09is that people didn't want to sit outside at noon Eastern time at 104 degrees
14:13and see San Jose State come to town.
14:16I mean, it made absolutely no sense that there was this kind of overreaction to it.
14:20Now, I feel like I'm higher on USC and Lincoln Riley's team than you are for this year.
14:27I love what I saw from the offense.
14:29Again, not going to go nuts at San Jose State.
14:32I really like the quarterback.
14:33I like the youth and the talent at wide receiver.
14:35I'm still a believer in Lincoln Riley and his offense.
14:40What's the upside here for this quarterback and this passing attack?
14:44Well, I think we saw a glimpse of that on Saturday.
14:47I mean, Trent Mosley, my goodness, his first game, first college game,
14:51seven catches, 118 yards, became the first Trojan to do that
14:55in his first game as a freshman since Juju Smith-Schuster back in 2014.
15:00So that's like historic territory.
15:02They actually had three starting freshman receivers,
15:07Caden Dixon-Wyatt, who had a touchdown catch,
15:09and Tron Baker as well,
15:11and a freshman tight end who's very promising in Mark Bowman.
15:15So they've got a lot of youth, but this youth, I'm telling you,
15:17I've never seen talent and the confidence that these guys have right out of the gate.
15:22We saw it on Saturday.
15:23You know, I was a little bit disappointed in the run game.
15:26You know, they kind of controlled the game early,
15:28and obviously they're going to go with a vanilla game plan against San Jose State,
15:32but there's a lot of upside between King Miller and Wayman Jordan,
15:38who's coming back from an injury last year.
15:40So it is, to your point, it's a dynamic offense with lots of weapons,
15:43top to bottom.
15:43The offensive line is very experienced.
15:46So the big question for me is going to come on the other side of the ball.
15:50Well, let's get into that in terms of the defense and also your expectation,
15:55because I'm taking USC, and this is not an overreaction,
15:58but I said it last week, to the college football playoffs.
16:01What's your feel on the defense?
16:04What's the ceiling for this team this season?
16:06Well, I think, you know, it's still kind of an inconclusive situation with,
16:11you know, through three quarters Saturday,
16:13they had held San Jose State to three points,
16:15and I think they were right on track.
16:17Then they kind of, you know, brought in the third stringers,
16:20and things fell apart.
16:22So, you know, on the one hand, you're like, oh, of course that's not good.
16:25Of course they want to keep this game in the single digits.
16:28But on the flip side, you know, the third stringers,
16:30you can't really expect the same level of, you know, play out of them.
16:34So I'm not overly concerned by that.
16:37I will be interested to see, you know,
16:40Lincoln Riley said that Gary Patterson, the new DC,
16:43was pissed about the fourth quarter,
16:45and that was before watching the game film.
16:46So I'm headed into practice here in a bit.
16:48I'll be interested to see how he's feeling after digesting that full game film.
16:53But they've got some pieces.
16:54They just need to be a bit more disruptive.
16:56I mean, only one sack against San Jose State, two pass breakups.
17:00You've got to be in the backfield and get home a lot more than that
17:03against these caliber teams.
17:05So, you know, playing Fresno State here on Friday with a quick turnaround
17:08will be a chance to take a big leap up.
17:11All right.
17:12I got to know from your perspective, Trojan fans more excited about the product
17:16on the field on Saturday or the beer swords?
17:20The beer swords were a hit.
17:22You know, as I wrote in my story, there were some kinks about where they were
17:25and who was selling them.
17:26But they are big.
17:28You know, I got to go get a video of one of the frat guys chugging that thing.
17:33I talked to their nice lady.
17:35But, yeah, they're a thing.
17:38They looked really cool.
17:39Somebody offered me one.
17:40I said, this is probably not the best time.
17:42Maybe another day.
17:43But, yeah, they're fun.
17:45They're a lot of fun.
17:46Before we let you go, I want to get your take on the top of the Big Ten
17:49because I love Oregon getting over the hump this year.
17:53I'm a big Oregon believer.
17:54I think that Ohio State will be great.
17:57I like USC this year.
17:59You know, I don't have Indiana necessarily in my top ten,
18:03but I also know that Cignetti is unbelievable.
18:06Give us, before we let you go, Ben, a thumbnail sketch
18:09of what you're looking for in the Big Ten.
18:11Yeah, it's good timing
18:12because we've got a new Big Ten power rankings coming out soon
18:16at California Post Sports.
18:18So, look for that.
18:21I'm going with Ryan Day at Ohio State.
18:22I love Julian Sand.
18:24When I saw him last year live in person,
18:26he just, to me, feels like every time he throws the ball,
18:30it's going to go for a big gain.
18:31And just so efficient, so smart.
18:34Really like him a lot.
18:35You know, I might be a little bit biased against Dante Moore at Oregon
18:38because he was at UCLA as a freshman and did not look good.
18:41So, some of those images are probably unfairly sticking with me.
18:45But I think Oregon top to bottom is right there as well.
18:48And, you know, Kurt Cignetti never bet against him.
18:51I think they'll be right there in the mix.
18:52I don't think they'll go undefeated again this year.
18:55But certainly those three teams have got to be in the playoffs.
18:58SC is going to be right there in the mix.
18:59I'm actually picking SC to upset Oregon at the Coliseum.
19:03Wow.
19:04I think SC is, I think they've got a late season stretch
19:06where they've got Ohio State, Indiana back-to-back.
19:09I think that's going to be where they stumble
19:11and then they're going to lose some momentum
19:12and then, you know, go to the Rose Bowl, play UCLA.
19:15And that's where I think the Bob Chesney magic at the Rose Bowl
19:18is going to start working and they're going to pull the upset.

19:59It's happening this year.
20:01Quack, quack, the Oregon Ducks.
20:03I'm obsessed with this team.
20:05I love Dante Moore.
20:07I love Dan Lanning.
20:08I think he is a fabulous head coach.
20:10You look at his winning percentage,
20:11look at how he always gets his teams to achieve and overachieve.
20:15He's phenomenal in terms of X's and O's,
20:17great in-game coach.
20:18The defense has a plethora of returning starters.
20:22I just think this is finally going to happen.
20:25Fourth straight year, a Big Ten team wins a championship.
20:28Fourth straight year, it'll be a different team that wins a natty.
20:31I'm taking Oregon to win the entire thing.
20:36Number two, Notre Dame.
20:37And let me give you a bold prediction here on the Fighting Irish.
20:41Notre Dame, under Marcus Freeman,
20:44with my guy C.J. Carr, quarterback,
20:47will go undefeated in the regular season.
20:50I think when you look at the Notre Dame schedule,
20:53I see nothing but wins.
20:55The Miami game is at home.
20:58And I think you're going to see Marcus Freeman
21:00get his team to achieve and overachieve.
21:03And I can do nothing here but stress the positive on Notre Dame
21:08with a chip on its shoulder after erroneously not making the college football playoffs last year.
21:13SMU is strong.
21:14BYU is strong.
21:16But the rest of these games outside of Miami, obviously, cupcakes.
21:20So, I think that you're going to see Notre Dame take advantage of it.
21:24And I have them beating Miami, getting revenge on Miami.
21:28Miami made it last year.
21:30By the way, I love Miami.
21:31I think Miami will have one loss this year.
21:33It'll be at Notre Dame.
21:35I think Miami, going to be phenomenal.
21:37I think that when you look at Mario Cristobal, he's a phenomenal coach.
21:41I think you could make a case.
21:43And I love Carson Beck.
21:45They're upgrading at the quarterback position.
21:48They are strong on the offensive line.
21:51Tony, Tony, Tony did it again.
21:53Love watching him play.
21:55He's an unbelievable game breaker.
21:56I think Miami is the third best team this year.
22:00The U is back, baby.
22:01Third best team in college football.
22:03Number four, Texas.
22:06Listen, I'm rolling with Sark.
22:08I think that Steve Sarkeesian's due.
22:11I think that Arch Manning is going to live up.
22:14I think he's going to be phenomenal this year.
22:15I think Texas wins the SEC.
22:18And I think that Texas has the deepest, best roster, top to bottom, in all of college football.
22:27Number five, Georgia.
22:30I'm a big Stockton fan.
22:31But I'm also, most especially, a big believer in Kirby Smart.
22:35We're at a stage right now, when you start talking about the elites of the elite on the sideline in
22:41college football, it starts with Kirby Smart.
22:43There is a great case to be made.
22:45He is the best coach in all of college football.
22:48Defense will be strong.
22:50The skilled position players are excellent.
22:52Stockton is the ultimate John Stockton floor general who gets it to everyone and distributes brilliantly.
22:59I love this Georgia football team and program.
23:03I think they will make the college football playoffs.
23:05Number six, Ohio State.
23:07Listen, Ohio State's one of those teams.
23:09You're never going to be surprised if they win in that.
23:11Because Ryan Day is great.
23:13Love Arthur Smith as the new offensive coordinator.
23:15Love Matt Patricia as the defensive coordinator.
23:17I'm just saying, I like Julian at the quarterback position.
23:21Jeremiah Smith to me, pound for pound.
23:24Best player in all of college football.
23:26Ohio State has what it takes.
23:28I will take them as a college football playoff team.
23:32Number two in the conference behind Oregon.
23:35But I'm going to roll with Ohio State.
23:37Number seven, USC.
23:40Ain't no party like a West Coast party.
23:41Because the West Coast party don't stop.
23:44Love Lincoln Riley.
23:45Love the youth and the talent that they have on offense.
23:49I think Mojave is going to be outstanding at the quarterback position.
23:52And you know this is not an overreaction to what happened in week zero against San Jose State.
23:59I made this pick before week zero.
24:02I've been raving about USC.
24:04I think they are a sleeper team.
24:06Josh Pate was on our show last week.
24:08You're on Shine Time.
24:09He said as much as well.
24:10I think USC is going to be terrific.
24:13Absolutely tremendous this season.
24:15Number eight is LSU.
24:17I know it's Lane Kiffin.
24:19And I'm not a Lane Kiffin guy.
24:21Lane Kiffin can coach.
24:22He can do a lot of things that drive you crazy.
24:24But I love the combination of Lano with Sam Levitt at the quarterback position.
24:30I think this is a match made in heaven.
24:33I also think that LSU has been loaded for a long time.
24:37Obviously it didn't click and connect with Brian Kelly.
24:40The fake accent.
24:41Everything that transpired.
24:42I think that Lane Kiffin will maximize the talent.
24:46I think LSU is the eighth best team in the country.
24:49And I think they make the college football playoffs.
24:52And number nine.
24:54Ole Miss.
24:55Lano's former team.
24:56Listen.
24:57I think Pete Golding can coach his ass off.
24:59I'm a big fan of Chambliss at the quarterback position.
25:01I think Lacey is absolutely terrific running the football.
25:04And this team is going to be motivated to prove that they are even better than last year with Lane
25:10Kiffin.
25:11So, I'm a big believer in Ole Miss.
25:14And I think they will scrap and claw.
25:16Find the way.
25:17Especially with Chambliss.
25:19Who I, you know, sometimes we get so wrapped up in where a quarterback is going to go in the
25:23NFL draft.
25:24You forget to enjoy the ride when it comes to a college quarterback.
25:29Chambliss is unbelievable as a college quarterback.
25:31I think he's going to have a monster season once again for Ole Miss.
25:36Now, we know Fernando Mendoza is not going to repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner this season.
