00:008 20 on Thursday it's Mary Kay Cabot she's on the wise heart right we make it right call
00:05Kyle Wright hotline hello Mary Kay hello guys how you doing doing well I have a question to ask you
00:10about your children at the end of the uh at the end of this segment okay okay all right I
00:16want to
00:17ask you be ready for it's gonna be wild I mean already I'm ready it won't be that crazy uh
00:22has
00:22Todd Munkin already made his decision and is that decision Deshaun Watson it seems like that's the
00:29lean but I honestly can't say they wanted to get through this pivotal week I think that this is a
00:35big practice for Deshaun and Shador today against the Bills and I also think that Shador can do some
00:42things when he goes out in that game on Saturday to prove to them that he can handle the whole
00:47entire
00:47operation of a game and manage it well uh so I'm going to say that even though the lean does
00:53seem
00:53to be Deshaun uh that it's not over yet Mary Kay you've obviously been following this as close
01:00as anybody and some Shador fans are upset about the distribution of reps going forward because of the
01:08um intrigue of this week and then knowing that the Patriots game could be a total afterthought
01:14so do you think they've got a bone to pick with Todd Munkin when it comes to
01:19the level of fairness or lack thereof no I think they've done a really good job of giving these
01:26two guys a fair chance to win this job and equal reps and I think that Shador has done a
01:30really
01:31nice job in the competition he's kept himself in it uh to this point and that's not an easy thing
01:35to do
01:36when you're going against a three-time pro bowler with all that kind of experience that understands how
01:41to run this kind of an offense which is very QB centric so no I think it's been a very
01:46fair competition
01:47and I think Shador every time he's had an opportunity to the to rise to the occasion
01:53I feel like he's done so Mary Kay Cabot joining us here on the Wise Heart Right we make a
01:57right
01:57called Kyle Wright Hotline do you think fans are going to boo Deshaun Watson in the third quarter on
02:01Saturday well I would hope not I would hope not I hope that uh you know that fans would support
02:11the person that might be their starting quarterback this season but you know I I could also see it
02:18happening based on some of the things that we even saw last year with Dylan Gabriel Dylan Gabriel went in
02:24for a play against the Buffalo Bills last year and got booed uh there is a phenomenon that is going
02:34on
02:34right now with Shador Sanders that is unlike anything that I've ever seen before and just in terms of
02:40uh the fan reaction and and whatnot and he's beloved by the fans and that makes it difficult on whoever
02:48is going to be in there instead of him and that's just the reality of the situation you guys have
02:55seen
02:55it I've seen it when Dylan was trying to play he had to deal with chants for for Shador and
03:02and signs
03:03and boos for him it's it's part of it and then you add in the whole Deshaun as villain concept
03:09because of some things that have gone on or the things that have gone on in his career and his
03:14life uh and then it just it adds to it so it is it's something that has to be addressed
03:22in my opinion
03:23I think it's something that the people in Deshaun's camp if they haven't already addressed it uh hopefully
03:30they have all somehow worked with him to make sure that he's prepared for what that's going to feel like
03:37for him like I said it it happened to Dylan if it was going to happen to Dylan then it's
03:43possibly going to happen to Deshaun
03:46Mary Kay we had Herm Edwards on yesterday uh he kind of laughed at the notion that anybody would care
03:52about the tracking of completions touchdowns and interceptions in a training camp um he
04:00basically talked from a coach's perspective about all the other things you would never see
04:04and I'm curious um what you think about that between these two quarterbacks we saw notably
04:10yesterday how practice ended where Todd Munkin was none too happy about Shador not being able to get
04:16a playoff on time resulting in a 10 second runoff because guys weren't lined up and he snapped the
04:21ball and those are the little things that add up how do you think the two quarterbacks are doing when
04:26it comes to all those little things that for a coaching staff turn out to be pretty big things
04:31well I think the thing to remember when you're talking about Todd Munkin is the fact that he is
04:36a stickler for those details he hates crappy football and I mean we've seen him cancel practice
04:42over procedural penalties or cut it short he hates that stuff and once again as I mentioned before
04:50this offense emphasizes QB control you have to be on top of things at the line of scrimmage
04:55and in that particular regard Deshaun has the edge right now because he's done it so often he did
05:02that exact same thing in Houston in the Bill O'Brien offense so he's well versed in all of the
05:09things
05:10that he's expected to do right now and Shador is still kind of coming up the learning curve on that
05:14doesn't mean he won't get it uh but and he's he's come leaps and bounds from where he was even
05:20in April
05:22but I would say that Deshaun is is still ahead in that regard and if he wins the starting job
05:28it's
05:29because of that and the other thing about this situation is the fact that Shador can make
05:34incredibly explosive plays and he looks good doing it and he has an uncanny natural feel for the game
05:42that is enticing there's no question about that and he might even look better than Deshaun in this
05:48practice and he might go out and bite it up in the game if he's got Casey and Denzel out
05:54there
05:54but if that happens and he still doesn't win the job it's then because Todd is looking for someone
06:01who can make sure that the game is managed effectively and appropriately uh you know right
06:08from the start to the end and we'll see how it goes but that's the situation right now see that's
06:14kind of the thing I'm thinking about here this whole time like everybody wants to see explosive
06:18plays everybody wants to see big plays but you know you only get one crack or two cracks a game
06:23at doing something like that that doesn't win a game we've seen that before and I think that that's
06:27kind of where his base is he just kind of wants to see somebody who can manage a game try
06:30to eliminate
06:31turnovers try to move the ball down the field put them in scoring position just about every single
06:34time they possibly can so they don't have to sit there and rely on their defense to win every single
06:41game that they have a chance to like they've had to over the last couple of years
06:46well that is true but the other thing that has to be taken into account here is Deshaun can't get
06:52back into throwing interceptions he threw two interceptions yesterday now albeit he was working
06:57with the second team but he did throw two more interceptions yesterday and then Emmanuel McNeil
07:03Warren dropped a third and if he is doing things like that today that's not going to be helpful to
07:09him
07:10in this quarterback competition and that was happening early on in practice then he cleaned it up
07:16and then it reared its ugly head again yesterday so he's got to stay away from those kinds of things
07:22because if he can do that then he can manage the game well enough to Todd's liking I think to
07:29at least
07:29go out there in the early going on the road handle the silent counts and all of that stuff
07:33uh to keep them in the game like you know like you said to then uh you know have the
07:40defense
07:40really sort of take over and do its part Mary-Kate Cabot joining us here on the wise heart right
07:45we
07:45make a right called car right hotline what do you need to see out of the defense today in that
07:48joint
07:49practice uh with the bills well pretty much the same things that this defense has been doing all camp
07:57it really looks like a formidable defense and we haven't even seen it out in full force we have not
08:03seen Carson Swessinger we have not really seen Mike Hall for uh the previous 10 days he returned two days
08:09ago and looked really really disruptive at the line they used him at end he looked really good uh we
08:15haven't seen too much of Denzel Ward we haven't seen a ton of Tyson Campbell lately uh so I think
08:22that uh
08:23that this defense is going to be a force to be reckoned with uh I've seen Mason Graham elevate his
08:30game to a new level Jared Burst has been an absolute beast so I think it's a really good defense
08:36and I
08:36think that it will probably show out today the defense kind of getting into it with the offense
08:41here it's kind of been a running theme uh Todd Munkins had to address it a few times things have
08:45gotten physical he's had to end practice early do you think that they're frustrated maybe that they're
08:49not getting the look that they think that they need to get ready for the regular season
08:54well it's that point in camp where you just get frustrated about going up against each other
08:59day after day after day after day and this has been a really really tough and intense camp
09:04this is very different than what we saw in my opinion uh under Kevin Stefanski the last few years
09:10Todd does not do a whole ton of seven on sevens he does a lot of those very demanding punishing
09:1611 on 11th he's trying to get this team ready to play and uh and so I do think that
09:22they have
09:23reached that point where they want to go after someone else and you know try to get to another
09:29quarterback and try to knock the pass away from another receiver so it's time for that but cooler heads
09:36are going to have to prevail today this practice cannot get wrecked uh by fights and it has the
09:42potential to do that but hopefully that won't happen all right Mary Kay Cabot join us right now
09:48uh on the hotline so clearly to get work done the offensive line is going to actually have to block
09:54something that they couldn't do a lot of in the preseason game and now they're going to have to
09:59show to try to help both Shador and Deshaun uh do you think they're up to the task or do
10:04you think
10:04they are probably weeks away from gelling well the hard part about the offensive line is that
10:11they've been a little bit banged up and they haven't really been able to see their starting
10:16five out there all together as much as they would have liked uh even their right guard they've had
10:21issues there with Tevin Jenkins Elton Jenkins their center has has had a few issues there they really
10:27wanted to get a good look at Parker Brailsford at center and he suffered a wrist injury so they really
10:32haven't been able to just get that five out there get it settled in and then the other thing is
10:38they
10:38haven't had one quarterback to get used to that cadence and to understand his timing and his tendencies
10:46on third down I mean they just haven't really had that so hopefully for them uh they can settle on
10:53a
10:53starting five and a quarterback soon and get the starting 11 working together Michael Coates have a chance
10:58to make this team has he already made this team I think so when you're that much of a ball
11:04hawk he
11:05just has a natural natural nose for the football I think that that he probably does have a good chance
11:10to make the team especially at a premium position where those guys are hard to find all right Mary Kay
11:16real quick we have a diabolical question that we have to do rock paper scissors to see who has to
11:20ask
11:20you the question it's a good one Mary Kay it's rock paper scissors shoot okay ready yes here we go
11:24rock paper scissors shoot
11:29he put up he put up uh I put up scissors and I got paper so scissors beats paper so
11:34that means
11:35Ken gets to ask today's diabolical question brought to you by
11:40frustration okay go ahead Todd seems frustrated at the end of all the we keep going we keep going
11:47if you want but go ahead all right diabolical question Watson if they make him the starting
11:52quarterback seems that they will make him starting quarterback correct correct correct correct
11:56will they make him a captain
12:00I could see them making a captain what you guys uh or what people on the outside don't understand is
12:06that uh his teammates like and respect him and they always have and he's very much a team guy and
12:12he's very very much about winning and the team so I I would think that they would if they named
12:17him the starter oh really whoa Mary Kay my heart wasn't in that one well you didn't want it you
12:26don't want to be the captain no how are you gonna make him the captain if he's gonna be out
12:32by week
12:32three well they're not banking on that Todd Munkin thinks he's gonna coach him up and he's gonna get
12:36better each and every week so I want your opinion not Todd's or what you think Todd's opinion is we're
12:41having a sidebar discussion well let me ask you Mary Kay because clearly Todd has been very frustrated
12:46at the end of the last few practices now a couple days ago is because of how physical it was
12:52and
12:52Shador gets run into we had a guardian cap ripped off at one point uh do you think it's normal
12:59for
12:59frustration to set in for the players is he getting frustrated because he expected them to be
13:04further along or is that just Todd Munkin in general well it's it's different situations each time
13:11one time he halted practice because he saw defenders crossing the line and he even had words
13:18with his defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg about that so that's different than players making
13:24mistakes he has very very little tolerance for mistakes so that's why he ended another practice
13:30so it's just different each time but I think he's trying to establish a culture of excellence a culture
13:39of toughness and a culture of clean football and it takes time to get those things instilled in a
13:47football team uh but he he's not taking any bs from these guys he's going to be out there yelling
13:53and screaming until they get it right and if he has to cancel practice he'll cancel practice
13:57all right Mary Kay I have a personal question to ask you you uh you were a you reared three
14:02children
14:03how old is how old is too old for a son are we keeping it to sons Owen how old
14:08is too old to
14:09stay home from work on the first day of school for your son's first day of school how old's too
14:13old
14:13for him for you to stay home on yes for the parent for the parent to stay yes for the
14:19parent to stay
14:20home on the first day of school yes I don't know that I ever stayed home on their first day
14:25of
14:25school I'm pretty sure I got them to school and went to work hard charging Mary Kay you got stuff
14:30to do
14:30Enough of this novelty of the kids and the photo ops and the social media and the Instagram.
14:36Nasty tone.
14:38But I might add, you have to go to work a lot earlier than I did.
14:42I was able to get the kids off to school and take the cute little picture in front of the
14:46door.
14:47So if you have to go to work and miss that, then I would be all for sticking around and
14:54getting that photo
14:55and having that moment with them on a particular day.
14:58And if you need an age for that, I would say maybe first grade would be the last time.
15:03First grade.
15:04Damn, Sam.
15:05Okay.
15:05All right.
15:06I like that.
15:08All right, Mary Kay, we thank you so much for your time.
15:10All the best to you and your three wonderful children and your husband.
15:14And I think you probably have a dog.
15:15I don't know.
15:16Have a great day and I'll talk to you later.
15:19Sounds good.
15:19Two cats.
15:20Two cats.
15:21Wonderful.
